Recently widowed, Luna Salcedo is recovering from years of emotional and physical abuse. On her way home to her temporary housing at Hope House Women’s Shelter, she spots an injured dog lying in the road and realizes it’s still alive. Without a second thought, she carefully rushes the dog to the vet. Carl Thomas can’t explain his draw to Luna. He’s admired her from the day she came to Hope House, and they’d formed a tentative friendship. When she asks him to take in the dog she named, Hope, he immediately agrees. Only, he didn’t realize the amount of care required. As Luna and Carl work together to restore Hope’s health, attraction blossoms. Carl knows he’ll have to take it slow, but can he convince Luna that not every man is like her abusive late husband? Hope is the second book of the Rescued Heart series, where dogs help to bring love to the ladies of Hope House Women’s Shelter.

Please don't let my three star review keep you from reading this book if you are a fan of Christian romance. To fans of that genre -- including several of the ladies from the book club at my church -- it would probably be a five. It is sweet, uplifting, and squeaky clean. It's also totally predictable, which means it just isn't for me.
In summary, a young mother who is living in a domestic violence shelter finds a dog who has been thrown from a car and left for dead. Seeing herself in this abused animal, she names the dog Hope and takes her to an emergency veterinarian. She is helped in this by the handsome security guard from the shelter, who offers to pay for Hope's medical care. He is a good and decent man of faith, who tenderly cares for the dog as he falls in love with the woman.
There are Biblical themes of how Christ's love can mend our brokenness, how we are all worthy in His eyes and how He has a good plan for each one of us.
A place for shelter and protection while healing from an abusive husband is just what Luna needs. Her character as written is all too tragically real every day. It's nice to escape to a beautifully written story where a white knight exists and a ride into the sunset brings the happy ending we all crave. Not every abused woman, struggling to believe she has worth and raise her children has a place like Hope House but thankfully, all can find hope and rest in God's loving arms. The times I visit Hope House are very heartwarming with characters that draw you close .
I LOVED ROXY’S STORY AND I LOVE HOPE’S STORY THE SAME. DOGS ARE SPECIAL TO ME. I LOVE HOW God used a dog and a special man to help Luna and her girls heal. I can identify with the parts when Luna was so afraid she would get abused, even when abuse was the farthest from the people’s minds. I’ve never been physically abused, but all my life, I’ve been criticized, hearing all about what I can’t do and what I’m not good at. My poor husband has had to deal with my version of it, but God continues to work through him in my life. I thank God for His healing, for Luna, for me, and for you!
Luna and Hope were both broken. Hope was so weak when Luna found her on the side of the road that she wasn't scared, but Luna is skittish after the way her dead husband treated her. I was angry along with Carl when Luna related more about his selfishness and abuse. I cheered for both Luna and Hope to recover and thrive and I loved that Carl was patient, loving, and didn't give up on either of them. Luna's girls Skye and Mercy were adorable and despite all she'd gone through they came first in her life and she was a wonderful mom.
Finding a very injured puppy named Hope helps to heal and find romance for Luna who was a victim of spousal abuse, while living in a group home with her two small daughters. Heartwarming with a Christian-based overview for those who enjoy this genre.
