Witness the final battle of the two Bats in this conclusion to the second installment of the White Knight saga! After learning the truth about his name and fortune, Bruce Wayne has made a shocking public announcement in pursuit of redemption - but before he can secure Gotham’s future and prosperity once and for all, he must protect the city in one last brutal showdown with Azrael. With Batman devastated by his shattered identity and with little left to lose, there may be nothing left to stop him from abandoning his code and resorting to one unthinkable desperate measure.
After breaking into the industry at a young age, Sean Gordon Murphy made a name for himself in the world of indie comics before joining up with DC. In his tenure, he has worked on such titles as Batman/Scarecrow: Year One, Teen Titans, Hellblazer, Joe The Barbarian, and the critically acclaimed miniseries American Vampire: Survival Of The Fittest and The Wake with Scott Snyder. Murphy also wrote and illustrated the original graphic novel Offroad and the popular miniseries Punk Rock Jesus.
“Batman: White Knight” was the most engaging Batman story of the past several years, both well written and superbly drawn. It contended with serious modern subjects, like race, gender and inequality. All the recent criticisms about the chauvinism and elitism of the caped crusader were brought to the frontline, although not taken to their ultimate consequences. It was Batman’s Watchmen moment. When I read about “Batman: The Curse of the White Batman”, I became both thrilled and worried. The risk of a slippery slope toward self-destruction was quite real. Since I could not wait for the graphic novel, I bought each issue separately. Sitting tight until the next one was particularly enervating. After several months, I finally got the full picture. The story is still well written and superbly drawn, but the slippery slope I was afraid of was taken with proud. In the end, there was not much left of the Nietszchean übermensch that Batman represented. His righteousness was replaced by self-doubt and lack of foresight. His causes proved to be misguided. Not even the name Wayne was spared. It was another Watchmen moment. However, this time I am not referring to the graphic novel, but instead to its HBO glum extension. As most stories, appreciating Batman required a high level of suspending disbelief. And enjoy the ride while it lasts! Sean Murphy said no to it all and, as consequence, it made me utterly sad.
1.5/5 Yup, yup, yup, just like I said, it only went even more downhill I'm just gonna write it out in a review for the full volume, because yes, as I predicted, I'm widely disappointed by this one
What I like about Sean Murphy's vision of Batman is that it actually has the guts to do the things I wish the main storyline would have done decades ago. Here we actually see Batman face the consequences of his acts, and evolve. We see the characters in new and interesting places that don't feel forced. Overall, Curse of the White Knight is a strong sequel to the masterful White Knight that makes bold choices and leaves the future open for another exciting entry with some long-awaited characters. While I still feel that the story overall moves way too quickly, and it doesn't take the time with some important moments, it still is an amazing read that I highly recommend to seasoned fans of the Batman universe who don't care much for whatever is going on at DC Rebirth.
Holy Macaroni Batman , Sean 's writing is getting better , this story is well thought but it hitting the batman universe like a ton of brick . Friendship are created some are put on trial . The only thing is the character of jean-paul is not enough developed for me is motivation , since he is not the center of the story , how he is dealing with his cancer.
The other thing is the presence of the joker still.
This was a good read .
The next project for sean is the plothole so the next batman story is far far away.
I actually preferred this run to the first run. The story in the original run is cool but by the time i got to the end i was happy to not see Murphy's weird long faced Batman anymore. Butttt i have to say he upped his art game big time on this one. He's always been a great artist but I just didn't enjoy how he was drawing batman's face before this.
4.5 stars. Great ending. I didn't love this sequel series nowhere near as much as the original one but it was still a fantastic read. I don't regret reading it at all as I think this world is fantastic and the plot line is just amazing.
Just incredible! What a great series in Batman comics. The emotional aspect was so strong, art was incredible, and the story was excellent. A must read in modern Batman writing.
It's a decent conclusion to the story. With all the non-canonical twists they took, they could have pushed the finale harder. I like this spin on Batman and love Murphy's art, but am glad it's non-canonical.
