Why change canon?

I mean... I get DC was trying to get their own creative liberties going. Maybe they’re trying to make their own story line independent of the show. But all the changes to canon (minor and insignificant as some may have been) kind of make this asinine and annoying to avid fans of the original Rooster Teeth work. Let’s just hope it improves from here.

This comic book is a mess. The art is all kinds of wrong. They get small things wrong like Yang losing her left hand when she really lost her right arm. The character expressions were really weird and the proportions of them look like a first timer drew them. There's even a shot of Tai's left hip missing and his hand is flipped in the wrong direction.

Who's going to read these comics? RWBY fans who are going to get a recap of stuff we already know? Or is it newcomers who will be fed so much exposition that they'll be confused? They also get stuff wrong or don't explain it clearly enough. I mentioned Yang's arm on the wrong side but there's more. Penny's wearing a Beacon uniform but she never went to Beacon. Weiss has a semblance that's described as Summoning but that's not her only ability. Ruby's semblance is described as teleportation but that's not what her power is at all. Tai waves team RNJR off but that never happened in the show.

I don't recommend this comic. There's nothing really warranting a read. The art style is terrible and easily the worst part, the lack of focus really shows half way through the comic, team JNPR is talked about, the Battle of Beacon is barely talked about and not even our villains are explained. Overall, this comic is a waste of time and I don't want to talk about it anymore.

I only decided to pick this up after seeing DC has it for sale for 99 cents. I wasn’t aware it was based on a show. That said, it only seems to appeal to those familiar with the source material. This first issue lacked any development of the story’s world or characters. It just ends up being an overview rather than an actual story, like reading a Cliffs Notes version. It didn’t whet my appetite for the rest of the series.

Disappointing. The art style is amateur at best and insufferable at worst. The comic is just recapping what happened in the show but skipping lots of important information. Pyrrha and Penny's death that were really important are just hinted at. I was hoping for something interesting or new but I didn't get either.

This first chapter is basically a recap of what happened in volumes 1-3 of the show and then some insight on Ruby's childhood, her relationship with her family and her character in general. It's very introductory and short, but the next chapters will focus on things we didn't get to see in the show (I think a little bit of what happened between volumes 3 and 4?). So, if you're a big fan of RWBY, give it a go, but don't expect something life-changing - and if you haven't seen RWBY yet... go do that now!

I hope that anyone picking up this book is aware that this is based off an anime, and issue 1 is mostly recapping key plot and world-building so that the graphic novel version of RWBY can kick-off.

There. That’s my PSA for today.

Less than thrilling issue, if only because it’s everything than viewers have already seen. But, I am impressed by Bennett’s ability to capture the character’s voices. Looking forward to issue #2!

I couldn't find the whole collection TPB so I'll write my thoughts on the collection since that was what I had read. I was excited about this as I am a fan of the animated series. Despite it's writing flaws the characters had heart and the voice actors were putting a lot of personality and character into their performances that made me over-look things like poor development of story and plot holes and strange development and illogical reactions to things.
This is in all regards a re-telling or an alternate universe retelling of events after the fall of Beacon and the separation of Team RWBY. A lot of the events in this story seem to take place between events of the series and some of them seem to be a completely different set of plot beats. In the end it's still a fairly enjoyable read if you are a fan of the show. The art can be hit or miss depending on the chapter and artist. Sometimes it feels like they are trying to do what the show does and really I think the best thing to have done with this is find artists that bring their own style.

Beautiful Artwork

The coloring and style is unique and beautiful. Definitely worth looking at but would probably be even better in print!

only 18 pages. Felt like just a rip off to get you to to buy you to buy the set a piece at a time. could have been a single book for less.

Ok. Didn't know this was based off a show. So I'll be coming back to these after I watch that cause I'm kinda lost. But the art work are incredible.

So far this a recap of the first 3 volumes of the show, nothing new. I do like that Ruby is narrating it, the crush on Yang joke....I feel called out. I like the art and the colors!

Solid start, not much new content on for fans of the show yet. Not a great intro for new fans.

If you're a fan of RWBY, this is a nice intro issue into what is to come from the series. It sums up most major plot points up to Volume 3. If you have never watched RWBY but want to start, this does contain spoilers.

Overall I enjoyed it: the art was good, and Ruby was written well. It's all from her point of view.

I was in high school or in college that I last read a comic and it was W.I.T.C.H. You can't imagine my addiction the first time I read it. I was like a dying man in a desert desperately looking for the oasis waiting for the next issue. But after 2 years of following the series, I just got tired of it and gave my copies to my cousin. Since then, never picked up another comic again.

I hope RWBY would change that. :) Err~ It's not really off to a great start but I am very hopeful.

This first issue is a very good start. It's pretty much just a recap of the events of volumes 1-3 but it's executed VERY well. The art is gorgeous and colorful and the writing and humor is already on point as well. Can't wait to see what the second issue has in store!
