Efter souperen dansede jeg den lovede kvadrille med hende, og selv om man skulle tro, at jeg nu var fuldkommen lykkelig, voksede og voksede min lykke. Vi sagde ikke et ord om kærlighed. As short as it is, this little tale has all of the attributes for which Tolstoy has become famous, from the detailed description of its characters to the uncompromising portrait of society in late 19th and early 20th century imperial Russia.

What is stronger - physical attraction to a person or belief in general human compassion?
A decent person has to make a choice sometimes, and the young protagonist of Tolstoy's short but intense story chose humanity as a whole after seeing the father of his crush indulging in unnecessary violence against a tatar.
One has to admire those who reject a shining facade when they see the dark abyss underneath - as it is so common to go for short-term advantage or pleasure and ignore the suffering that doesn't directly affect oneself!

‘‘My whole life,’ he said, ‘was changed one night, or, rather, morning.’
‘Why, what happened?’ one of us asked.
‘What happened was that I was very much in love. I have been in love many times, but this was the most serious of all.’’
Definitely not one of Tolstoy’s best, to be honest, quite ineffective on the surface. But if you really think why the story is actually written (as I generally do after dragging myself through any obscure art form, not so much of that in this case) you can find out a surprising number of relevant contexts. First of all, it brings up a rather debatable perspective on love: the character who despises to associate any form of physicality (rather sexuality) on matters of love, ( ‘The more I was in love the less corporeal was she in my eyes.’ )blatantly renames a temporary infatuation with serious adulation. Also, someone who feels sympathetic affection for a person when he wears inexpensive shoes out of apparent destitution, is repulsed when the same person cries out for help and mercy when publicly beaten and humiliated. Still, at the end of the day, he believes (and hopes others will believe so too) that he did well on dissociating himself from the girl of his dreams at the moment when he was most needed, while having fallen on the desperate obsessive desire to be with her when she was the most admired one in a ball. Questions as to what the hell is actually this story trying to be ambiguous about.
It’s high time to get back here on Goodreads and stay active, I feel. Had a ridiculous couple of months, while in the last four weeks I joined and quit five part-time jobs. No kidding. Do I have anger-management issues that require medical attention? Is that why even a so simple tale is bothering me so much, let alone all of those self-conscious morons who were trying to control the way I write?

«Cuánta tierra necesita un hombre» me ha gustado mucho. Los otros dos relatos me parecen demasiado sin más para ser Tolstói.

TOLSTOI busco educar al pueblo en un punto de su vida, cambio su manera de escribir para poder ser un guía espiritual en su época y de escribir grandes novelas empezó a escribir cuentos e historias con enseñanzas. Este libro compila 3 cuentos cargados de reflexión el primero Después del Baile escrito de una manera muy atrapante y lírica lleva a un profundo análisis sobre el amor, el enamoramiento y como pueden cambiar los sentimientos al ver varias caras o matices de las personas, que pueden ser amables y cariñosas en sociedad y, crueles y malvadas en otros ambitos de su vida.
El segundo Tres muertes, mediante la comparativa de la muerte de una mujer de una familia adinerada y un cochero pobre, lleva a esa realización de que somos mortales. Cuando llega la muerte, tenemos ese deseo por prolongarla y ser recordados. También muestra la importancia de las promesas y la importancia de la trascendencia espiritual a un más allá, reflejado en los sueños. Puedes sentir ese terror visceral hacia la muerte o la aceptación en paz y resignación, todo contrastado con la tercera muerte, la de un árbol, que da paso a la inevitable realidad de la muerte y con ella también crear el espacio para que nuevas vidas se desarrollen.
Termina este libro con el relato Cuanta Tierra Necesita un Hombre, escrito de manera precisa, evocadora y muy fluida que busca generar en el lector una profunda reflexión acerca de la codicia y la insatisfacción. Pajon se pierde el presente para vivir siempre deseando más, poner su felicidad en los bienes materiales y esa búsqueda en un futuro que nunca llega y que termina trágicamente con la realización que al morir no puedes llevarte nada.

I quite enjoy reading short stories at the moment. The compact stories fits perfectly with my mood these days; only demanding me to remain concentrated for as long as I can manage with my scattered thoughts.
This short story was delightful. A very elegant study of how it is to see something wrong unfold and yet stand by, paralysed and unable to act.

Tres relatos interesantes, escritos con la pluma maravillosa de Tolstoy (las descripciones del entorno en el segundo relato, Tres muertes, son preciosas). El que más me ha gustado ha sido el primero.

Абсолютно, от первой до последней буквы, гениальный рассказ, оценить который в средней школе, разумеется, совершенно невозможно. Всё в этих вот пёрышках, сапогах с квадратными носами, «разноцветной» спине избитого татарина, в этом вот «ни на что не сгодился» — чистый, неразбавленный дух, ювелирная точность каждого душевного движения, каждой мысли, каждой реплики, какой почти ни у кого никогда не было. Поразительное что-то.

un Tolstói finísimo en estos relatos, el de Cuánta tierra necesita un hombre es absolutamente brutal

Este libro se compone de tres relatos, Después del baile, Tres muertos y ¿Cuánta tierra necesita un hombre?
"Después del baile", nos relata que en una fiesta aun hombre cuenta sis experiencias de vida y porqué es como es, contándoles a sus quiénes están con él de la vez que se enamoró de joven y tuvo una decepción al ver un hecho efectuado por el padre de la chica de la que estaba enamorado.
"Tres muertes" nos relata, de una pareja aristócrata en la que la mujer moribunda que empeña en ir al extranjero a curarse, de un cochero moribundo, que se relaciona con el cochero de la pareja y quién pide al moribundo sus bots a cambio de hacerle una tumba y como cumplimiento el mencionado cochero corta un árbol para hacer una cruz al difunto y el árbol que escoge cae sin vida.
"¿Cuánta tierra necesita un hombre?" Para mi el mejor relato de los tres, que nos cuenta la historia de un hombre que quiere tener más tierras y así no temerle al diablo pero el diablo lo escucha y por la codicia del campesino, busca más y más tierra y no le sirve de nada al final.
Los relatos son sencillos de leer, bastante amenos y algunos mejor que otros pero que disfruté bastante.

Después del baile cuenta como en una misma noche de fiesta puede cambiar la perspectiva de una persona. El protagonista se enamora perdidamente de una bella mujer durante un baile, sentimiento que se ve reforzado por la galantería y buen porte de su elegante padre. Pero algo que ocurre en las postrimerías hará que su vida a partir de entonces de un vuelco que no podía prever.
Tres muertes cuenta la historia de como se enfrentan a su muerte una aristócrata y un criado, y sus allegados. Contrasta la dignidad del criado ante la muerte con la quejumbrosa aristócrata que incluso en su lecho de muerte echa en cara a su esposo el no curarla.
¿Cuánta tierra necesita un hombre? es un relato moralizante sobre el peligro de la ambición sin mesura y la avaricia; cuánto más se tiene, más se quiere.

Finaliza con el que fue mi favorito de esta entrega, «¿Cuánta tierra necesita un hombre?» se divide en muchas partes, en donde el protagonista se ve envuelto por la codicia una vez el diablo ha escuchado su reto de obtener la mayor de cantidad de terrenos posibles, logrando su bienestar final, el cual, desde luego, nunca llega.
Es un buen texto que puede funcionar de forma introductoria a la literatura de Tolstoy, no he leído mucho de su pluma pero estos cuentos ayudan a dar una idea general de su estilo narrativo y esa reflexión que provocan sus escritos a través de la ironía que se esconde detrás de sus narraciones.

Como siempre, Leo Tolstoy convirtiendo un relato en un DOBLE RELATO; porque no deja las cosas claras. Y, no critico, eso me gusta pero creo que la finalidad del relato se podria haber comprendido mejor si todo lo que explica el protagonista al principio del relato (hilando la historia ) estuviera copiado y pegado al final de todo.
en fin, buen relato. Curioso.

قصة قصيرة سياسية اجتماعية، القصة حصلت مع أخو تولستوى وغير الاسماء فيها.. ف نفس الوقت هى اسقاط على العسكر والسلطات الحاكمة ف الوقت ده وبينقد فيها اللاانسانية والعنف اللى بيستخدم..!

Son tres buenos relatos, sobre todo el primero (me gusta la idea que transmite) y el último (tiene un final buenísimo). Sin embargo, es una escritura muy racional y me ha transmitido poca emoción.
Es mi segundo acercamiento a Tolstoi después de abandonar Anna Karenina. Supongo que este autor no encaja mucho conmigo a pesar de su calidad.

Ngày bé đọc Tolstoy không có ấn tượng gì mà giờ đọc thấy ông vĩ đại lớn lao quá chừng. Một truyện tinh tế, một truyện đầy đức tin và một truyện triết lý nhân sinh cả đời. Ngưỡng mộ vô cùng.

Un relato que nos dice en pocas palabras y narrado por boca de su protagonista como el amor más idílico, el soñado, el esperado es solo una ilusión, porque cuando se toma consciencia de todo lo que a ese amor rodea y puede afectar directamente, éste se va desintegrando, disolviendo y solo queda el buen recuerdo y las buenas sensaciones no de lo que fue sino de lo sentido en ese momento... La ilusión primera aunque no sea correspondida o definitiva es difícil de olvidar
Si todavía no conoces al autor o te produce incertidumbre la literatura clásica rusa, este es un buen relato para conocerla y tal vez quitarse ese miedo que da lo desconocido 😊👌

Очень уж врезалось это кратенькое, но очень отрезвляющее произведение автора...
Очень уж сильно оно заставляет задуматься над человеческой природой и его поступках, а особенно понять как казалось бы в самых благопристойных людях находится ужаснейшая мерзость, которая даже не пытается скрыться, а наоборот проявиться и показать себя "во всей красе" - просто ужасно!...

Зарисовка с моралью. "Входит в список обязательной литературы для средних школ" -- и уроками литературы с пожилой, знающей однозначные ответы на все вопросы учительницей от зарисовки веет. Я несправедлива, да. Но уроки литературы в средней школе -- это особенная категория.
