Four-Legged Friends #2

Gordy's Got a Problem

Rate this book
Living in downtown Toronto can be expensive and frustrating, but Leo is willing to deal with the traffic and working the overtime in order to experience everything else the city has to offer. Or would be, if he had any energy left to do so. The fact that his upstairs neighbour is making more noise that a herd of elephants isn't helping things either. Tired, irritated, and on the verge of losing his patience, Leo knows that things have got to change.

Gordy is one of the most attractive young men that Leo has ever met, and Leo has no doubt in his mind that Gordy has been using those good looks to get whatever he wants for a very long time. So when Gordy starts turning on the charm, Leo can't help but wonder if it's actual interest or merely appeasement.

Together they're going to try and figure out just what can be done with Gordy's new roommate -- an energetic, excitable, and very noisy young goat whose visit comes with a deathbed promise and a tight family bond. What Leo doesn't realise is that she also comes with an ability to make him understand more about himself than he could have ever imagined he needed to learn.

Henley was born with a full-blown passion for run-on sentences, a zealous indulgence in all words descriptive, and the endearing tendency to overuse punctuation. Since the early years Henley has been an enthusiastic writer, from the first few I-love-my-dog stories to the current leap into erotica.

A self-professed Google genius, Henley lives for the hours spent digging through the Internet for ‘research purposes’ which, more often than not, lead seven thousand miles away from first intentions but bring Henley to new discoveries and ideas that, once seeded, grow like weeds.

This is a fun and sweet story with a slow burn romance between virtual strangers. Leo thinks he and Gordy share an attraction, but he’s not sure until rather late—when he finally works up the courage to ask. There’s a bit of angst in there, but it really isn’t that long-lived because Leo doesn’t stew too long. There are some fun side bits, too, like the neighbor kid with the sharpest eye in the building who wheedles his way into figuring out Gordy’s secret. The building super plays a nice role in drumming up tension. I really wanted to have more interaction with Leo and his hippy parents, because they seemed way more likely to be helpful than Leo’s cantankerous friends.

This was a cute little book, with an adorable little goat causing some major problems. And while I love Gordy and his little goat, I kind of had a problem with Leo. He just took things too fast and wasn’t really listening to what Gordy was trying to tell him.
I like Leo, and I get that he’s a fixer and it’s ingrained in him, but sometimes people just need someone to listen or to help them find a solution, instead of taking over. And unfortunately, because Leo wasn’t fully listening, it messed things up several times. Gordy was trying to tell him he was interested, but he just wasn’t ready. And who could blame him. With all he’s trying to deal with and going through, I wouldn’t be ready either. It’s a hard thing to deal with. You’re whole life has been turned upside down and trying to finish what you started in life has no been put on hold. It’s a lot.
It’s really a cute story. Belinda is a little booger that keeps you entertained, along with a kid neighbor named Samir, that is a trip. So it has some fun times and a whole mess to try to get through as they have to hide Belinda, who is obstinate to say the least. Lol. It’s a good little story.

AssUMe - a thing you shouldn't do if you're Leo.

This was fun, and I really liked the ending - so hopeful. Also, I would have liked to smack Leo on occasion, like when he does the thing at the beginning of this review, and won't let Gordy get in a word edgewise. Maybe, just maybe, Leo, pull your head out of your ass a little sooner, yeah? Many of these situations might have been avoided. Still, congrats on your growth. Well done, that.

Enjoyable, for sure.

“Owning our story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it. Embracing our vulnerabilities is risky but not nearly as dangerous as giving up on love and belonging and joy—the experiences that make us the most vulnerable. Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light.” ~ Brene Brown

Leo, of ‘Gordy’s Got a Problem’ by A.F. Henley, had a good, if not atypical upbringing and parents who love him. He has good friends and a job that is demanding but okay. Yet, he is emotionally and physically exhausted. He is not even sure why. There’s just no brightness in his life, nothing to get excited about until he meets Gordy, his upstairs neighbor who seems so kind and vulnerable that Leo has no idea how to deal with him.

After an exhausting day at work, all Leo wants to do is sleep. Unfortunately, the noise coming from the apartment upstairs is enough to bring the ceiling down. Leo puts up with it for a while. Finally, when he can’t take it anymore, he goes up to find out what the heck is going on and ask his neighbor, Gordy, to “knock it off!” Leo is expecting to tear into his neighbor for making noise, but when he is confronted by a very vulnerable, frustrated, at his wit’s end, adorable young man, the wind goes out of his sails. It seems the source of the noise is a pygmy goat whom Gordy has gotten stuck with keeping while his mother is in the hospital. Gordy doesn’t ask for help but is grateful when Leo decides to take over and help Gordy solve his problem.

Leo comes up with solutions, but each time, they fall through. Leo likes Gordy but considering all that is going on in his life, doesn’t want to take advantage of him. Yet, Gordy is giving out what Leo takes as mixed signals. Gordy seems to run hot and cold: one minute he is kissing Leo and the next, he is begging him to stop. At times, it feels like Gordy is using him. Normally, Leo would not put up with this kind of behavior, but with Gordy, he doesn’t’ seem to be able to do that. Finally, when Gordy decides it is time for them to be together, Leo doesn’t believe he is sincere. Leo tells Gordy that with all that has happened, he doesn’t feel he is sincere in wanting to be with him and leaves.

Gordy was adorable, although understandably conflicted, stuck between duty and what he needed. Leo was intense and controlling yet his compassionate upbringing kept popping up to temper it. Belinda, the goat, was hilarious and stole the show as animals always do. Thanks, E.M., for the intense story infused with levity and a happy ending.
