Crochet Cute Critters is full of cute animals for anyone beginner to advanced crocheter.

You get easy to follow step by step and simple circle patter for each critter, the only downside I see is the hook size seems to be a bit large to get a good tight stitch, but that is an easy fix, just go down a size if needed, not everyone crochets the same way.

Originally published on my blog: Nonstop Reader.

Crochet Cute Critters is a tutorial instruction guide with patterns for 26 amigurumi animals. Due out 20th Aug 2019 from Rockridge Press, it's 140 pages and will be available in paperback and ebook formats.

The book is attractively and logically laid out. The graphics are appealing and clear. The book is lavishly illustrated and I really appreciate the closeness and detail of the photography. It's really easy to see what the author is doing in the pictures. The book has a short introduction including the history of amigurumi (and how to pronounce it) along with a short pep talk about why she started crocheting soft toys.

There are three main parts. The first section includes a very thorough intro to crochet and tools and supplies. The section is well illustrated with clear photos of different brands of crochet hooks, what they look like, and the structural differences. There's also a handy chart with metric/US size and gauge measurements. The author presupposes no previous knowledge of crochet and the instruction is upbeat and positive (and reassuring). There's enough info here to start crocheting for both visual and hands-on learners. She also covers other supplies, like yarn and stuffing, safety eyes, embroidery thread, needle choices, etc.

The second section is the assembly and finishing chapter. All of these designs are stitched together from different parts: arms, ears, legs, heads, etc. The author takes the reader through general assembly step-by-step. Again, the pictures are large, clear, and understandable.

The third section includes the individual animals. All of them have cute(ish) alliterative names: Alex Alligator, Benny Bear, Callie Cat, and so forth. There are 26 in all, one for each letter of the alphabet. The iguana, bee, jellyfish, snail, unicorn, and x-ray fish just absolutely tickled me. They're all adorable and safe for all ages. I didn't finish any of the patterns yet, just tried out parts here and there; an ear, a leg, a couple of different arms, etc. I found no errors in the patterns I tried out.

The author has included links to her online presence in the credits at the end of the book for readers who wish to follow or interact with the online community.

For Kindle Unlimited subscribers; this title is available in the KU subscription to borrow and download for free. It's also worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately.

Well done and a nice selection of patterns which are fundamentally different from one another, giving the reader a broad platform for creating alternative amigurumi.

Five stars. Well worth a read for crochet interested readers.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

This is a really cute, well-written collection of amigurumi patterns! I follow Sarah Zimmerman's blog, Repeat Crafter Me, so I instantly requested her book when I realized it was on NetGalley. I haven't made anything from the book, but I think I'll be making the whale at some point. So this review is just from reading through the patterns.

What's impressive is she came up with an animal for every letter of the alphabet! I think that could be advertised in the title or the cover, because it's a really cute idea.

This book has an excellent introduction to amigurumi, guides to the basic stitches as well as increasing, decreasing, and changing color, and helpful tips for the general construction and finishing process. Zimmerman would be a great candidate for writing a how to crochet book, just saying...

Great for anybody with kids in their life, or anyone who wants to make squishy and cute animals!

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This was awesome!

I stubbled across this little gem when searching for something to read. I haven’t been crocheting long, but these patterns look very easy to make me want to give them a try! Some look a little more complex but if I start out with the single colored animals, I can work my way to the multi colored ones. I’m off to buy some yarn!

So many cute critters! As its stated in the beginning of the book, the crocheter must know the basics of crocheting and know how to read a pattern in order to craft these critters. I love the table of contents has each animal head as a picture for easy viewing. Essential Tools, Supplies, Abbreviations, Stitches, Stuffing, Joining parts, Closing and Finishing were also in detail in the intro. I find that the pictures were clear and the intro steps detailed. All the patterns have the same basic pattern shape, so once you make one, the others should be easily to follow.

I received this book at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Great explanations

This book has some of the most compete instructions and pictures to explain the process and stitches used in
making amigurumi I have seen.
The pictures and descriptions of the stitches were top notch.

The patterns for the stuffed toys seemed fine and were also well documented.

In my opinion, this book is a great starting point for anyone interested in amigurumi.

Let me start by saying this is a good book, the patterns are cute and simple and I appreciate the author going out of their way to make the patterns using similar shapes and amount of rounds.

The book opens up with a sweet dedication page and the contents show the patterns in order from A to Z which I personally appreciate and then we get to the welcoming page and contents explaining the tools you’ll be using and the different abbreviations (both US and UK terms, very helpful)

The only nitpick I have is the chain stitches at the end of every round in the patterns, all it really does is leave a visible trail up your plushie,I assume this is to help beginners keep track of where the round starts incase they lose track of a stitch marker and don’t know where to place it.
I just kinda wished there was a note somewhere saying the chain stitch is optional for confident crocheters and showed an example of what the chain stitch would look like on the plushie

All in all a great book and would highly recommend buying this for yourself or gifting it to someone, beginner or not

If you have never done amigurumi before, this has some simple but uninspired patterns. I made the cat and it turned out ok, but I did have to modify the instructions. I would not necessarily suggest it for absolute beginners since some of the instructions could have been clearer, but if you understand how to crochet in the round, you should be able to modify/interpret the patterns.

I will say that this book has some of the worst photographs of completed works I have seen in a book. Why does the Bee have a broken neck? Also, what horrors has that poor Alligator seen?

I’ve read through all the intro bits-as a beginner, these pages are gold. Loads of helpful info here that I haven’t seen in other books and info sources I’ve delved into. The animals are cute-haven’t tried my hand at them yet-but they are my next practice task (I’m still making lopsided mini bunnies 😂).
I’m finding it’s largely about the yarn, the tension, and finding hooks that you like. The crochet industry has hit the jackpot with me, apparently.

This book will appeal to some crafters but the style of animals here is not something I'd spend my time on. That said, the book is well organized and the photos are clear. The animal shapes are simple without much shaping. The color choices are equally plain and unsophisticated. I didn't read through the step-by-step directions nor the introductory text.

cute, easy to follow patterns.

Sarah is a great designer. A beginner with 0 crochet experience could pick up this book and make any of the critters. (My favorites were the turtle, and giraffe)
The body shapes are all the same, which gives nice cohesion.

Nothing here that I would want to make but this would be an excellent book for a beginner with nice clear detailed instructions and very simple unfussy design. I would expect most people to need to use a smaller hook than 5mm to get the required tight fabric though.

You can take just a small amount of yarn and make something adorable out of it. Making “something” out of “nothing.” The patterns are very easy to read and crochet. I loved this book and have made the alligator and the zebra. There is an animal for every letter of the alphabet.

great book for amigurumi

This book is great for the most part. I found a couple of mistakes that may throw off a beginner which is why I took off a star. But if you can adjust the mistakes they are wonderful patterns
