Who knew I’d become an author? Not me. But when the opportunity knocked, I answered the door and welcomed it in. I approach life with as much positivity as I can—celebrating the hits and laughing at the misses. Nothing worthwhile is easy, and that includes everything in my life. But I have much to smile about—my lovely mother, a beautiful daughter, two precious granddaughters, my adorable dogs, and my sweet husband of over thirty years. He has always supported me—including uprooting to move to the other side of Charlotte, N.C. for a life change, just when we thought we were settled.

If settled means not going after my dreams, then I never want to be settled. I give my all to things I enjoy—and that includes writing. In 2021, I hit the USA Today Bestselling Author list, and recently, two of my books were named RONE Finalists!

I love to express myself to the point that my daughter avoids going to the movies with me because I’m that woman in the row in front of you who gleefully munches her popcorn and laughs at every hilarious scene. Loudly. Besides my family, I love chocolate, popcorn, laughter, and animals. I love animals so much that I frequently sprinkle them in my stories as secondary characters. They usually steal the show! British and American history have always interested me, so writing historical romances set in the U.K. and the US is where my passion is.

When I was barely three years old, my parents divorced, and my mom moved my sister and me from New York to South Carolina to live near her parents. Juggling a full-time job and full-time school, my mother became my first genuine hero—she never waved the white flag when things were tough. And things quickly got tough. My grandmother, who helped care for my sister and me while my mother worked, became ill with cancer, and didn’t survive the surgery, dying before I was seven. Losing Grandma devastated me. She read to me and taught me to read before I started first grade. I credit her for inspiring my love of reading, and I credit my mother for encouraging me to turn my ideas into stories.

When I was ten, my neighbor gave me her book club copy of Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with the Wind and it remains one of my favorite books. But it was Kathleen Woodiwiss’ Shanna and Ashes in the Wind, that hooked me on historical romance and sparked my dream of becoming a published author.

While I primarily write Regency Romance, I enjoy almost any period in American and British history.

This was such a delightful and touching story about second chances and enduring love. The main characters, Maggie Winters and Lord Maxwell Wilde, are beautifully crafted, each with their own compelling backstory. Maggie, a widow with a tragic past, and Maxwell, a nobleman still in love with her, find their paths crossing again under dramatic circumstances. Their journey towards rekindling their love is both heartwarming and filled with emotional depth.

The secondary characters add richness to the narrative, making the world feel lived-in and authentic. Not to be overlooked is Shep, the little dog with the heart of a lion, who brings a charming and courageous presence to the story. Overall, this novel is a sweet and engaging read that will leave you rooting for Maggie and Maxwell’s HEA!

Wed to a monster

Maggie and disappeared from Max life! He knew she loved him but she basically disappeared and then married someone much older and vile! What I don't understand with these stories is why Max didn't look for her! Men in this time period have complete control over female relatives and they rarely get any way so in their lives! Max found Maggie badly beaten and literally on the side of the road! This story is typical no real surprise here! The heroine seems surprised by the villain which makes no sense with all of the evidence prior to the villian exposure!

I really enjoyed reading this story. The action starts on the first page and just grabs hold of you. There is action, adventure, second chances at love and family, and a feisty loyal dog. Definitely surprises I did not see coming. I loved this journey to HEA!

Maggie Winters had everything she always wished for betrothed to the man of her dreams, a loving home, and a new puppy. But in the blink of an eye it all changes when her parents& younger brother die in a carriage accident die, and her uncle Silas forces her to marry a stranger to pay his debts. Lord Maxwell Wilde & Maggie had planned to marry until she disappeared from his life, leaving only a scribbled note in her wake. So Max enlists & three years later returns home. In the middle of a sudden storm, he finds a badly injured woman lying in the road. He saves her only to realize he has rescued the woman he’s never forgotten.
A well written captivating romance, I loved Max & whilst I started by liking Maggie, I grew to love her. The chemistry between Max & Maggie gets hotter & hotter. The pace is good & the story flows effortlessly. What starts out as a second chance romance quickly evolves into something more. There’s mystery, danger as well as romance. There are surprises as not everyone is whom they seem. Plus Shep is an absolute delight.

Love, a bit with a dog, a bunch of romance tropes, murder, a ghost….so I loved it. But also recognize the book for what it is. Fun read but not the kind of reach for over and over.

“The Earl She Left Behind” is a very touching love story. Max, the Earl of Worley has never stopped loving his childhood neighbor, friend and ex-fiancé Meg, Lady Tipton...even though she broke off their engagement with little explanation. Anna St.Clare intertwines an intricate plot of loss, loneliness and pain with one of love, justice, family and friendship. Max and Meg are wonderful characters but the icing on this romantic and yet suspenseful story is fiercely loyal Shep! What a dog! Can I get one of his puppies?? Wonderful read, I could not put it down!

Sad and Sweet

This is the first book by Anna St. Clair that I have read. I will certainly be reading more.

Meg was ready to get betrothed to Max when she disappeared. Max has never stopped loving Meg but she was lost to him when she married someone else. He never understood what happened. Three years later Max finds her by happenstance on a road close to his country home. She is obviously in need and clearly injured.

Max takes her home with him and she stays to recuperate (Max’s mom is there so all is appropriate). Meg shares her story little by little and Max and friends realize she is in great danger. The book follows the line of the intrigue as Max does his best to earn Meg’s trust.

Note to readers. SLIGHT SPOILER. Meg suffered from spousal abuse. While there is nothing graphic described, specifics are implied. I feel it was an appropriate part of the story as Meg learns to slowly trust Max by sharing her past (which is linked to the danger she is currently in).

I thought this was a lovely story about a second chance for lovers who were meant to be together. The characters, including secondaries, are well drawn. And I can’t forget Shep, a little dog with the heart of a lion.

England, 1815 As Maxwell Wilde, Earl of Worsly was riding home, the lightening struck illuminating the road and he saw a a woman curled up on the road with a shaggy white dog beside her. "Gently he swept wet, muddied blond tresses from her face. Recognition was swift and tumultuous." "Bloody hell! Meg, what happened to you? Why are you out in the storm of all places?" Of course she did not answer and was barely breathing.
Yes, this wonderful story of second chances pulled me in with Max finding Meg on the road not far from his home. He had not seen her in three years since she had run away and quickly married the Earl of Tipton three years ago. They had been betrothed and he had been so hurt. He still carried the note she had sent him, breaking their engagement off. Now she was here and what happened to her?
This book has everything needed to be perfect as only Anna St. Claire, with her heartfelt creative writing always engages my imagination. Danger, suspense, love found and Shep, her dog that was so sweet and has a great back story. Just sit back and enjoy every word and sigh as you turn the last page. Loved it!

Super sweet & tugs at the heartstrings.
The story of two lovers, ripped apart by uncontrollable circumstances; until fate reunites them three years later.
Maggie Winters endures a traumatic marriage for years. Until one night, she is able to runaway with her faithful pup, Shep. Only to discover, she has landed right on the property of her former love, and into the arms of the Earl of Worsley.
Maxwell, Earl of Worsley has fought in vain to forget the former love of his life, Maggie Winters, now, Lady Tipton. When Maggie storms into his life once again, he wrestles with the anxiety of what happened years ago.
As the story progresses, Max learns of the horrific life Maggie endured during the pairs years apart. And Maggie is in more danger than she realizes. Old wounds of the past, open once more, and the reunited lovers struggle to hold onto what they have, their second chance.

I really enjoyed the story. There are some parts that hurt to get through; but once I did, I was relieved for Maggie, and what she had to endure. Although, I felt the story was a little too short.
Really recommend if you are looking to read a sweet, second chance love story.

The Earl She Left Behind by Anna St. Claire
Maxwell Wilde, Earl of Worsley, was returning to his home after an absence when he noticed someone injured. To his shock, it was the woman he had loved and hoped to marry. That is until she disappeared and he found out she'd married another man. He thought he was long over Maggie Winters...he was wrong.

Lady Maggie Tipton once had a wonderful life. Loving parents, a little brother, and Max. In a weeks' time, she lost her family and was sent off to marry an old, cruel man. She'd been waiting for the right time to escape her “prison” and finally, the time came.

Now, they were under the same roof with the same feelings from three years ago. But all was different. And they were finding out that Maggie had more enemies than her cruel husband and she wouldn't be safe until they found out who they were and how to stop them. Wonderful characters and a good storyline.

As I’m reading the story, I’m finding it hard to connect with the story. Details are not explained to well in the the story and the details that are are placed out of order. They do not connect the story line in that scene. The plot to the story is a good one, but maybe if the writer could have opened up with the murder scene first in the book. Going into scary details of what’s happening.
What Maggie was going through. Having Max come upon Maggie in the road is good. The scene with the doctors examining was to detailed. The story is just hard to connect with. I voluntary reviewed this ARC after receiving a free gifted copy.

I really loved this book. Right from the start it grabs you, and it holds your interest right up until the last page. This book was very well written, has wonderful well developed characters and moves at a very good pace. It's got suspense, drama, humor and romance. Everything that you could want in a historical romance book. I'll be reading more from this author for sure! Highly recommended! This author hit it out of the ballpark!

Amateurish writing. Very repetitive and boring inner monologues. The author seemed ill-equipped to handle the writing of a truly despicable villain and the trauma that the heroine suffers a result. The description of her ordeal was also unncessarily gruesome while being vague at the same time.

I wish there were more scenes between the leads to show her heal and then come to fall for him (again).

Beautiful cover; wonderful love story. Would love to read a sequel. Anna has written another book with lots of imagination creating a story that takes you right back to that era. Choice of words and characters are creative. Keeps the reader guessing where this story is going. I was sorry when the story ended.

A must read!!

The Earl She Left Behind, Book 1 of the Noble Hearts series, was about Lady Maggie "Meg" (Winters) Tipton, widow of the late Lord Fergus Anders, the Earl of Tipton, and Lord Maxwell "Max" Wilde, Earl of Worsley.
Maggie and Max had been not been betrothed long when their lives were thrown into disarray. Suddenly, Maggie had lost her entire family in a carriage accident, her uncle had become her legal guardian...and she abruptly disappeared, leaving only a short note to Max that did not truly explain her absence. However, an almost whirlwind marriage to another earl left Max heartbroken and in little doubt that she had jilted him for another man.
Three years later during a raging storm, Max was returning to his country home when he spotted a woman lying prone in the middle of the road with nothing to protect her from the elements save a small, white dog. Realizing it was none other than his Meg, unconscious and injured, he picked up both her and the pup and raced to his home to get her looked after. The events that followed revealed information so devastating to both him and Meg that it changed both their knowledge of what had happened over the course of the last three years...and their expectations for the future...especially for Max.
This story had such tragic events from beginning to end that it kept the reader not only glued to the pages but also in emotional chaos. The drama and angst were on high alert from the very beginning and did not let up until almost the last word. While it was a romance novel, it worked better as a mystery book, for it had so many secrets and twists and turns.
The characters were well-developed, though a tad unrealistic at times. Some of them were a bit too understanding while others were a little too unsuspecting. However, let it be said that those characteristics were probably due to the shortness of the book itself. If it had been a few chapters longer, then perhaps the author might have been able to give each character more depth than what she had. The book definitely had a different twist to it than most in this genre, giving it the opportunity to earn a five-star rating.

Max,Maxwell Wilde, Earl of Worsley, mom Harriet Wilde, Lady Worsley, sister Lady Angela Wilde,
John Andrews, Earl of Harlow, friend and fellow office/spy, along with the troop doctor,Dr Robert Angus Perth, who is now the family and town doctor.

Meg, Maggie Winters, parents Viscount and Viscountess Winters, brother Nathan.
Uncle Silas Winters, Nash Slade, Fergus Anders the Earl of Tipton

Mr Ambrose Nizal, investigator.

Our case is set, our mystery is unfolding.  Can you solve the puzzle in time to save the one in danger?
Growing up is was the two families hope that Meg and Max would marry.  After her first season in the ton Max decided he didn't like the idea of Msg with someone else so he proposed. It was going to be at the end of the Yuletide.  A few days before Christmas, her parent took her brother into town to get the festive decorations and do some shopping.  However, a fatal accident took their lives, leaving Meg alone, not knowing what to do.  Her Uncle shows up and she is then married off to the Earl of Tipton.

Heartbroken, grieving for the loss, Max joins the battle against Napoleon and then working the Crown beside his friend Harlow.  During his time in battle the good Dr Perth, befriends the two and agrees to become the town doctor.

Now three years later, Max is headed home to take care of estate business when st comes across a battered, unconscious woman with a little white dog as her protector.  Upon examining her, he gets a shock, it's Meg!  But why is she there, what happened to her.  With care he takes Meg and the dog, Shep, to his home.

As thing unfold, our mystery gets more complicated when events are revealed.  Happenings that have gone on the last three years and it is up to Max, Harlow and the investigator, Nizal, to put the pieces together while protecting everyone involved.

Your heart will sympathize with Meg, hope for Max, and be smitten with Shep.  Definitely a tissue worthy story that has plenty of twists to enthrall, beguile, and entertain.  There is even an appearance of a ghost to capture everyone's interest.

A very moving tale of second chances.  Loved every minute!

At first I thought this was a cute, if slightly stilted book. The characters (even the villain) seemed very one dimensional and some of the ways they acted (or reacted) didn't seem to make much sense. For example, Max and Maggie had grown up together and had even been betrothed before her family died, so I found it hard to imagine why she would allow him to kiss her, while at the same time not considering the fact that he might want to be with her. In fact, she even convinces herself that after three years of being apart, he might be kissing her while courting someone else.

However, there were some fun moments between them when you got to see glimpses of the friends that they used to be, and her little dog, Shep, was a definitely scene stealer. And while we knew who the villain was almost from the start, I enjoyed watching them as Max and Maggie (along with his mother, his friend and an investigator) worked diligently to find the poof they would need to show the extent of the villain's misdeeds.

I didn't even mind the mentions of a ghost having been seen in the attic window of Maggie's old home (although it was a bit curious how she would have been seen with the house set back from the road). I thought at the time that it added a layer of mystery to the plot, and some comfort for Maggie as everyone assumed the ghost was that of her deceased mother. That was... until Maggie is kidnapped and when one of the kidnappers touches her inappropriately while she is bound and gagged in the carriage, the ghost somehow manages to raise up a warming brick and bash the kidnapper in the head, killing him. This really took me out of the story not only because of how absurdly implausible it was, but because there was no mention anywhere of this story having actual paranormal elements to it. Even earlier mentions of the supposed ghost could have been easily explained away unlike this.

Those things considered, this novel will probably still appeal to those who don't mind ghosts able to meddle in the affairs of the living (even with the best of intentions), and who also enjoy books that don't contain scenes of an explicit nature. I would give this author another shot.

Struggled With My Rating

I had a hard time deciding how to rate this book. It’s not a 5 star book, nor is it a 1 or 2 star book. It’s also not a 4 star book, but somewhat more than a 3 star.

The very first page had this statement: “Thunder boomed above him. A second later, a sharp crack of lightning lit up the dark sky.” It should be the lightning followed by the thunder as most people know (or should know), light travels faster than sound. (Science 101.)

Next we have this sentence on page 54: “Max chuckled. “I am glad to see you, Harlow and appreciate your help in all of this. I hope your affable mood is an indicator of the news.” It should be noted that Harlow was already there, having come inside with Max.

Next we have this statement on page 104: “He had much to do with saving you from that carriage.” My comment to that is what carriage? And on page 105, the h refers to her 3 plus-year old dog as a puppy. Not a puppy at that age.

There were other oddities, but I quit keeping track of them; however, these definitely lowered my opinion with regard to the overall book.

The story itself was pretty good, but something about the author’s style just didn’t resonate with me. There was a little bit of a mystery, but I figured it out long before it was revealed (and it isn’t because I’m particularly smart with regard to mysteries). I don’t think I’ll ever reread this book, but the author tried. I know I can’t write a book, so I’ll give credit where credit is do. My final rating: 3 1/2 stars.

Second Chances

I absolutely loved Maggie and Max’s story. They loved each other and would be married but right before Christmas her parents and little brother were killed in a carriage accident. Her vial uncle whisked her off and married her to a man she owed a lot of money to. It took three years but she finally escaped.
Max was devastated when Maggie disappeared and when he could not find her he signed up for the military and fought in the war. Know coming home after three years he finds the one person he never thought to see again injured near his home, Maggie.
While she is recovering from her injuries she finally tells her story of extreme abuse by her husband. They find out her husband is dead and her uncle is trying to get authorities to arrest her in his death.
You have a wonderfully written story with intrigue, murder, ghosts, twists and turns, love and so much more all wrapped up in a good read!

Anna St. Claire’s “The Earl She Left Behind” (Noble Hearts Series Book 1)

Lord Maxwell Wilde and his betrothed, Maggie Winters had their lives and love cruelly stolen from them when her parents died and her new guardian sweeps Maggie from town and forces her to marry a stranger to pay his debts. Finding herself a widow she longs to find the one man she’s always loved.

The cover is absolutely lovely. This is my first time reading Anna St. Claire’s writing. After reading this story of a second chance, I plan to put her on my watchlist for future reading pleasure. The story is filled with intrigue, fast paced and creative. The romance is sweet and showcases how love really does prevail.

Thank you so much Ms. Saint Clair for this wonderful story of love and a second chance.

Their Fateful Second Chance -
This is a gripping and emotionally challenging story, where the characters went through quite a difficult journey, before they were able to get the happily ever after they were forcefully deprived of. The unbelievable twists, raw emotions, nerve wracking moments and suspense-filled tension, kept my heart rate increasing with each page turn and the captivating storyline, made it difficult for me to take a break until I reached the end. You need to be prepared to go through a myriad of emotions, so just get a box of tissues and a bottle of wine ready before you start reading this book. I highly recommend this book and can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

I received a copy of this book free and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

On a cold stormy night a dashing man rescues her on the road outside her childhood home. That man is the only man she has ever loved.
Max was heart broken when Maggie suddenly dissapeared and married another man without so much as a word of explanation. Now 3 years have passed and he finds her injured on the road home. He quickly realises he is still very much in love with her. Can he keep her safe and will they find their happily ever after?

Max Wilde was left heartbroken and furious when Maggie his childhood sweetheart suddenly married an older man says after her parents death. He's sure he never wants to see her again, until he finds her, collapsed with a head injury when travelling home. So he feels obliged to take her home so his mother can help her recover.

Quite liked a good deal of this book, and whilst I'm on the shelf about the existence of ghosts, I'm sure if they existed they couldn't clean house or kill a man by hitting him on the head with a brick.

Anna St Claire writes the best Historical Romance

Maggie and Max were in love when her evil Uncle used her to pay his debts to an equally evil man. There years later they are reunited when he finds her unconscious in the road during a fierce thunderstorm. He keeps her safe while she heals and they begin to unravel all the mysteries of the last three years. I loved the characters including Maggies dog Shep. The paranormal aspect at the end was delightful. I highly recommend.
