Treadstone #1

Robert Ludlum's™ The Treadstone Resurrection

Rate this book

Operation Treadstone has nearly ruined Adam Hayes. The top-secret CIA Black Ops program trained him to be a nearly invincible assassin, but it also cost him his family and any chance at a normal life. Which is why he was determined to get out. Working as a cabinet-maker in rural Oregon, Adam thinks he has left Treadstone in the past, until he receives a mysterious email from a former colleague, and soon after is attacked by an unknown hit team at his job site.

Adam must regain the skills that Treadstone taught him – lightning reflexes and a cold conscience – in order to discover who the would-be killers are, and why they have come after him now. Are his pursuers enemies from a long-ago mission? Rival intelligence agents? Or, perhaps, someone inside Treadstone? His search will unearth secrets in the highest levels of government and pull him back into the shadowy world he worked so hard to forget.

My first book by Joshua Hood as well as Bourne/Treadstone universe. Treadstone Resurrection is a fabulous action/spy thriller novel. I can't believe I was attached to the first character introduced in this novel right from the very beginning. His action brought Adam Hayes, an ex-Treadstone operative who now lives a normal life back into the game.

This is not a Jason Bourne novel. It ties to Treadstone Operations, black ops group run by CIA. I listened to the audiobook, Ron Butler's narration is excellent.

I was expecting this to be an engaging, character building, ass kicking thriller. Instead, I got muddled tripe with a lame end. 2 of 10 stars

In this series debut by Joshua Hood, the reader returns to the world of espionage and high-impact military tactics that Robert Ludlum perfected. Any who loved the Jason Bourne series (under Ludlum’s pen) will surely find something exciting, yet unique, in this piece. Adam Hayes is one man who’s seen his entire life slip between his fingers. Once a great operative within the CIA’s highly-secret Treadstone Group—Bourne’s former domain—he lost it all in the blink of an eye and chose to leave. Now enjoying the quiet life in the American northwest, Hayes is visited by a hit team, keen to scrub him out. However, he has no idea why or who is behind the hit. Sharpening his skills as quickly as he can, Hayes begins his own mission to avenge himself and find his own form of justice. It may mean he returns to the darker side, but he is willing to do so in order to get all the answers he needs. Reverberations will be felt at the highest levels of government, but Hayes will not stop until he has all the answers, no matter whose body he must step over to get there. Hood does well in bringing Robert Ludlum’s strong style back to life without trying to replicate or replace anything the master did while alive. Recommended to those who enjoyed Ludlum’s Bourne series and the cut-throat aspects therein, as well as the reader who wants a spy thriller that does not wane at any point.

Some will know that I am always leery to attach myself to a series where the original author’s work is continued by another. The flow and management usually fails to deliver the needed punch, which leaves everyone disappointed and feeling less than enthused with the final product. Joshua Hood has done something slightly different here, working with only the Treadstone Group loose outline and building a novel (series, it seems) around it. Adam Hayes is a wonderful central character, from his hidden and mysterious backstory to the bucolic life he sets out for himself. Hayes finds the solitude to work in his benefit and seeks to keep it that way, though it would seem others have decided how things will go. His grit is ever-present and he seems to be able to shake off the rust of past missions, fighting for his life and self-preservation. The countless other characters who appear throughout help to shape a highly intriguing story that gives Hayes even more backstory. Full of military and espionage speak, the reader is treated to a few wonderful sub-plots as the larger battle for Hayes to stay alive gains momentum. I was quite pleased to see how it all came together, with a few twists along the way. While military and espionage is not usually my go-to genre, I did enjoy this piece for the most part. I am a Ludlum purist, but Hood did not appear to try stepping over the great author’s reputation to sell his own. Rather, he built on what was great and added to it. With a mix of chapter lengths and wonderful detailed storytelling, Hood creates a novel that has wonderful series opportunities. Let’s see how he continues the journey before we give Hood too much back-slapping.

Kudos, Mr. Hood for a wonderfully entertaining piece. Ludlum fans will surely be wanting to keep an eye on you, as will many who enjoy something with a great deal of military momentum.

Robert Ludlum’s The Treadstone Resurrection is the exciting and promising opening instalment in a brand new series in which a whole original set of all-action, edge-of-your-seat thrillers take place within the renowned Bourne universe and introduce a hero and possible icon of the genre's future, CIA operative Adam Hayes. This death-defying saga ensues after Adam receives a rather desperate and somewhat enigmatic email from close friend and fellow Treadstone operative, Nick Ford. Before long he is in deep but with his skills not quite as finely attuned as usual can he win in the battle to survive? I must admit to often feeling slightly cynical when indulging in my questioning of whether a stunningly successful series, universe and/or author’s work can be continued by a separate thriller writer as it has, sadly, failed as a concept more times than I care to mention and it’s unlikely to ever reach the heady heights the original works once did. All of that being said, I admit that this was not only one of the more successful occasions but was highly enjoyable too.

Our intrepid protagonist is thankfully different enough from Bourne to not just merely be a carbon copy but shares enough important traits to make this is a compulsively readable thrill ride with danger around every corner and a palpable sense of tension rising throughout. Granted it may not be for everyone despite the intense cat and mouse games played and the plentiful twists, turns, shocks and surprises but it’s worthy of your time as Hood hasn’t strayed too far from the tried and tested thrills and spills as well as barely allowing you a breath between surprises. If you enjoy adrenaline-pumping, heart-thumping plots that race along at breakneck pace with an interesting main character then I don’t think you can go wrong by picking this up. It certainly, from the opening pages, begins with a bang and refuses to let-up the entire story. A riveting and highly recommended initial instalment. Many thanks to Head of Zeus for an ARC.

The Treadstone Resurrection is a thriller that establishes a new meaning to the word ‘action-packed’ in the best way possible. Set in the universe of Jason Bourne, The Treadstone Resurrection focuses on a new character, a former Treadstone operative by the name of Adam Hayes.

Adam Hayes is a man with a dark past, who’s trying to make up for his demons. A dark conspiracy pulls Hayes back into the fold of action and brutality. It was super easy to get attached to Adam Hayes as a character, with the writer creating Hayes as an intriguing character from the get-go. It doesn’t take more than a few chapters for the story to kick into overdrive mode with the beginning of brutal and fast paced action written with the finesse of a writer experienced in the moral combat, as Adam Hayes channels his training from Treadstone to swiftly take out assassins sent after him with a variety of tactics and weapons ranging from a Glock 19 to a Springfield SOCOM 16 with a thermal sight, all the way to a compound bow. Also a memorable mention of a sequence which includes a creative and brutal use of Air hammer. The emphasis on weaponry details throughout the book is an extremely enjoyable factor for action thriller fans. The plot keeps a fast pace throughout, adding to the time sensitive nature of the narrative.

The plot while at times seemingly straightforward, is still intriguing and attention grabbing with the action driving the story forward to keep the action thriller fans glued to the book. The narrative takes readers to Venezuela to uncover shady unsanctioned dealings between a CIA Agent and a Venezuelan Colonel of the Venezuela’s national intelligence service. Adam Hayes is put in the midst of this, trying to understand the full story of why he was pulled back into the fold out of nowhere. Jason Bourne gets a cameo reference in the book, and the book benefits from the inspiration of both the Jason Bourne books and the movies as well.

All in all, The Treadstone Resurrection sets up a great potential for future storylines, establishing Adam Hayes as an excellent protagonist with both wits and brawn to take out his adversaries as quickly as possible, a testament to his no- nonsense attitude. A great and exciting read packed with amazing action sequences that are not to be missed out on.

This series is called Robert Ludlum’s Treadstone, however this Treadstone book builds on an organization that was responsible for the creation of Jason Bourne. But the version of Treadstone being used is the Matt Damon version in the recent movies about Jason Bourne and only has the name in common with Robert Ludlum’s creation.
Just as the Bourne movies are very far removed from the original trilogy by Ludlum and with The Bourne Legacy we got an even better insight of the Treadstone organization with a different agent than Jason Bourne, the movie was excellent by the way. Then there was the Treadstone tv series which was too shortlived in my humble opinion.

With Adam Hayes we get the latest super assassin from Treadstone, he is also a former soldier that got pulled into the programme which turned out was not all that good for him. He walked away from the programme because all the modifications and the work felt wrong and did cost him his marriage and child.
Hayes is minding his own business when he gets a killteam on his tail whose intention is too take him out. Which is easier said than done when it comes to Hayes. When Hayes finds out why he is targeted with no restrictions when innocent people around him get killed because they are in the way he starts contemplating vengeance.
Then the story moves to Colombia and Venezuela where Hayes took out a president as a Treadstone agent he now is confronted with the new power in place.
This book is a long ride from actionscene to actionscene which on occasion gives you flashbacks to the Mark Greaney books about the Gray Man. The difference is that with the Gray Man you learn a lot more about the persons motivations and what made him.
Joshua Hood writes great action scenes but creates less of a narrative about who Adam Hayes actually is, there are short flashes but the give no real depth.
I can only hope that the next installment goes deeper into the character of Hayes. Ludlum wrote brilliant thrillers because his characters were humans that came into difficult circumstances and had to stay alive, he combined humanity with action. Jason Bourne was also an interesting character with a three book arc. Hood still has to bring any of the late Ludlum skills to the table.

But as an actioner this book is acceptable but now I would like to see Hood live up to Ludlum his level.

Thanks to edelweiss.com, the author Joshua Hood and G.P. Putnam's Sons for the advance review ARC for my honest review.

It was the late author Bill Crider, with his 'Outrage at Blanco' novel that made me love revenge stories so much and in away revenge stories for me will always be a tribute to him.

This was my first read from author Joshua Hood. Although I must confess that I have both of his Search and Destroy series books buried on my TBR read list, most definitely will be reading them and anything else he writes.

'The Treadstone Resurrection', definitely was my type of book, it's like the reader's on a roll coaster, with it's nonstop fast pace, full of twist and turns, it's tension filled, overloaded with action, gripping, just builds to a great conclusion and best of all is the good verse evil theme.

Just got hooked into the story, has storyline that could be ripped out of today's headlines, just from the start with injured operative Nick Ford, who sends a message to his best friend in Military days Adam Hayes and too know more you'll have too read this one.

I will say that Adam Hayes is a likable character, he lost his family due to his service, he's damaged, wants to get out and tough as nails. You'll also be thinking about Jason Bourne, due to the Treadstone 71 references but 'The Treadstone Resurrection' stands on it's own and author Joshua Hood's writing is brilliant.

He's my newest favorite author, definitely will read anything he writes, highly recommend this one and sure he has a legend smilin' down on him.

Jason Bourne wears a skirt.

Forget drug induced assassins, Ludlum’s Bourne over the years was as Tryptophan sleepy as a great uncle after Thanksgiving dinner. While the character and concept remained fantastic, it needed a dramatic new facelift and some chops. Dozens of thriller and espionage authors would have fought in a cage match for the opportunity, but Josh Hood emerged victorious, and thank god he did. But the key was in not handing him Bourne, but in giving him the white space of the extrajudicial killing machine that is TREADSTONE, an organization that falls squarely into Hood’s sweet spot—Death doling. With a combination of suspense, brutal action, operational creativity, and authenticity, Josh Hood breathes new life into the Bourne/Treadstone franchise with his own new world of characters and concepts that battle it out as only trained killers puppeted by Hood can do.

Joshua Hood delivers fantastic action (even surpassing the Bourne movies!) and an intriguing, twisted conspiracy plot worthy of Ludlum. Well done, Chief!

I anxiouly looked forward to this story, hoping I would not be disappointed. I was not disappointed. Mr. Hood has created a Hold-on-Tight action adventure that careens through the pages. This is NOT a Bourne book. However, repeated references to the Treadstone 71 group keep the back story of The Bourne Identity always in your mind. The weapons are upgraded. The personnel are different, but the jobs remain the same.
For all fans of The Bourne Identity, this work is a very enjoyable read. It is well worth your time. I was able to read this so quickly that I may need to read again just so I can enjoy it all again.

I'm not sure what's with the mixed reviews, but it seems like that's common for a new author taking on the mantle of a deceased, more famous author. I'm not even a Ludlum fan, so I went into this book treating it as its own thing and without any bias. I thought it was fantastic, tightly plotted, and fast paced, and I hope this series runs for a long time.

If you're expecting a direct continuation of or throwback to Ludlum's original Bourne novels, then yes, you might be disappointed (I believe the upcoming Bourne novel is a total reboot with no connections to Ludlum's originals). Regardless, as an espionage-action thriller, this novel is easily on the same level as Mark Greaney's Gray Man. I actually preferred Treadstone Resurrection for it's darker, grittier tone, moral ambiguity, and damaged protagonist.

The action scenes are some of the most brutal and intense you will see in print. If you read Joshua Hood's two Mason Kane novels, you have an idea what to expect. There is also a political conspiracy, which is a requisite for the Ludlum brand, but rather than Ludlum's often unlikely and over the top schemes, this one is more down to earth, dealing with corrupt American politicians and spies, drugs, and a coup in Venezuela. The flashbacks and details into Treadstone and Adam Hayes' origin were also interesting, and hopefully Hood expands on that in the future.

Adam Hayes is a solid protagonist, and it will be interesting if he returns or if future Treadstone book will feature different operators.

If you like exciting, violent action thrillers, then you will not be disappointed with this book.

Ok, this book? What can I say about this book?

This book is really really dumb.
There are some great parts but wow.

Annoying things include:
- Over the top crazy action scenes
- Too many flashbacks... One of which (and I'm not joking) takes place, DURING an over the top crazy action scene.
- Unnecessarily in depth descriptions and explanations. Shooting a pilot of a helicopter only to then proceed to explain everything about that type of helicopter and why the pilot would sit on that SIDE.
- Loads of interchangeable characters, most with little to no introduction.
- This has nothing to do with the Bourne universe. Nothing. They used the word treadstone a few times but that's it.

The main character at one point has a bag. He parachutes with this bag. He cuts this bag from a tree, can't be that big can it? Let me tell you some of the things he proceeds to take out of this bag in the coming chapters:
1. A portable bazooka
2. Grenades
3. Grenade launcher
4. Several hand guns/revolver
5. Cs gas
6 Multiple computers
7. A shotgun
8. Multiple rifles (one of which is described as being 17 lbs)
9. A portable satellite
10. Night vision goggles
11. Binoculars
The list seriously goes on.

There is one incredibly embarrassing scene that's written so badly I nearly gave up reading. The main character talks to another character about Instagram and its just... Just read it.

That said, I was loving this book up until a quarter of the way in.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I've been familiar with Joshua Hood's work for some time. When I heard that he'd been tapped by the Ludlum estate to develop a novel expanding the Treadstone universe beyond the exploits of Jason Bourne, I was intrigued. I picked up Hood's first work in the new series, THE TREADSTONE RESURRECTION, and decided to give it a spin.

I read the bulk of it in one sitting. It is that good.

THE TREADSTONE RESURRECTION focuses on Adam Hayes, a former Special Forces operator who was recruited for the Treadstone program during the height of the War on Terror, then decided to walk away from it and regain something resembling a normal life. A connection from Hayes's past reaches out to him with a Hail Mary in an attempt to shine a light on rogue intelligence factions committing misdeeds in Latin America. Hayes is suddenly sucked back into the world of covert ops and high-octane turbo murder, forced to rely on the skills he spent so long trying to ignore in order to unravel the conspiracy and survive.

Hood brings his own style of action to the world of Ludlum. I know some will think that his work is in the same vein as Ludlum, and I honestly find that to be a plus. Ludlum was fantastic at setting a scene and building suspense, but his dialogue and weapons knowledge left much to be desired (The Bourne Identity using "pistol" and "revolver" interchangeably immediately comes to mind). Being a former infantryman and a SWAT officer, Hood brings a refreshing authenticity to the table. While it pushes the limits of suspension of disbelief in regards to how much damage one man can do, within the confines of the Bourne/Treadstone universe, it works and is extremely entertaining.

Hood is also extremely talented in building suspense. I couldn't stop turning the page to find out what lay next in store for Hayes. The plot is overall believable, especially to those who know the history of American intelligence in Latin America. I was also pleased to find that Hood firmly establishes that the plot takes place in the Bourne book canon (Bourne is mentioned in passing, but not by name, and Treadstone is explicitly established as an immediately post-Vietnam program) while splicing elements from the films to create an excellent blend.

All in all, THE TREADSTONE RESURRECTION is one of the best action thriller books I've read in years, and it's satisfying to see Hood develop as an author. I foresee great things to come, both in the new Treadstone series and in Hood's writing career in general.

There is so much to love about this book. Adam Hayes would be right up there with Jason Bourne when it comes to elite operators trained by Treadstone. They are simply unstoppable, and for those that come up against them, lethal. If life didn’t get in the way I would have read this book in one sitting, I enjoyed it that much.
Adam Hayes had managed to get away from Treadstone and finally start to lead a normal life, after so many years of being paid to kill people. He had initially been an Army Special Forces Operator in Afghanistan when the CIA approached him to join them. With more training they could put his skills to better use and send him all around the world as one of their paid assassins. Now something terrible had happened to an old friend in Venezuela, and Hayes was thrust back into that world whether he liked it or not. I was thrilled when I saw that this was book 1 in the series and there will be a book 2 in the future, I can’t wait. If you like Action Thrillers, then you will love this book. 5/5 Star Rating.

A story full of action and the best Bourne’s follow ups. The protagonist is a Treadstone agent in the Bourne mold, that decides to call it quits. That is when the action starts as Adam Hayes will not be allowed to retire. Most of the action takes place in Venezuela and the action is non stop. Character development is a little weak and the flashbacks can mess up with thread of the story. I am looking forward to the follow up.

Book Review - Joshua Hood's Madsen Kane character in his Search & Destroy Thriller series is really good, but I am looking forward to his second Treadstone novel due out on February 2nd. I always enjoy a good espionage thriller and Joshua Hood delivered in his first Robert Ludlum installment. I really like the Adam Hayes character. He's not Jason Bourne but he's still a 'badass' and that's why I read action thrillers. This action thriller has just enough guns, munitions, helos, technology, and villains to keep the story moving and very engaging. There are some nice 'one liners' that gives it the right amount of humor while keeping the tension high and real. The story is drafted well enough to keep you reading until the final trigger is pulled. As a first in a series, it is a winner in my opinion and again, I'm definitely going to read The Treadstine Exile, the next book in the Treadstone series by Joshua Hood due out on February 2nd. Hood’s a good action thriller author, with heavy emphasis on “action”! Great read...!

This is a novel set in the Jason Bourne universe created by Robert Ludlum. As a fan of these books I wasn’t sure if I’d enjoy The Treadstone Resurrection, but I needn’t have worried in the slightest.

This is an all out, action packed thriller.

CIA operative, Adam Hayes receives an email from an old friend with a warning. Then with events at his workplace, it soon becomes clear someone is out to kill him.

This obviously puts paid to his ‘quiet’ life as he searches to find out who wants him dead and why.

It results in a fast paced, tense military thriller that will have your heart pounding. An exciting, fun and thoroughly entertaining read.

Thank you to Anna at Midas PR for the opportunity to take part in this blog tour, for the promotional material and a free copy of the book. This is my honest and unbiased review.

Having not followed the Bourne series and in depth as I have others, this was a fresh take on a storyline and battle that I absolutely loved. Joshua Hood is a decorated veteran who has the know with all and experience of stressful combat. He also knows how to write one hell of a book!!! This Bourne legacy thriller is a great read from start to finish with plenty of battles, misdirection, and more importantly, awesome writing. As the author of Clear By Fire and Warning Order, Hood hits this one on all strides and is making waves!!! Top notch scene development and he’s like a painter, but with words. Like a Bob Ross but for thrillers!! A little action here, a little gun here, maybe a bad guy here, boom all out combat and you’re going full throttle!!! This is a good one!! Don’t miss it!

*I voluntarily reviewed this book from the Publisher.

Action-packed and full of energy from the very first page, THE TREADSTONE RESURRECTION by Joshua Hood does exactly what it says on the cover and I can't wait for more.

Adam Hayes lost so much to Treadstone but he is slowly trying to find his way back to a semblance of a normal life. It's hard but it will be worth it if he can get his family back. But when an old friend sends him an email, everything is turned on its head, and Adam is being hunted by professional killers, just like himself. Who wants him dead and why? How can Adam get to the truth and how many innocent people will die in the process? In a world where power is more important than anything else, can Adam turn the tables and become the hunter and skilled killer he was taught to be?

Reading this book is like being at the cinema and watching it on the big screen only better. I felt the buzz of adrenaline kick in when Adam is attacked, I felt the tension and danger around every corner, and I thoroughly enjoyed trying to piece it all together alongside Adam as he tries to hunt down those who have set off this chain of events that are destroying his life.
THE TREADSTONE RESURRECTION by Joshua Hood is everything you could want in a spy thriller and then some, with characters that you will love and loathe, and action that feels exciting, threatening, and every other emotion in between.

A fantastic start to an exciting new series.

The Bourne theme has kind of lost its way. The films dropped off in quality, the Eric Van Lustbader books were not great and the recent Treadstone TV series was, in my humble opinion, utterly dreadful.
But now Joshua Hood has been given a chance to reboot the series and, thank goodness, it’s good.
The enhanced soldiers from the closed down Treadstone programme have moved onto other things. One of them sees something he shouldn’t and just before he is killed, sends data to an old colleague, also Treadstone trained. Now Adam Hayes finds he is a target too and needs to find out why before he too is killed.
This reboot is about pace and action, traditional “Ludlum” themes such as conspiracies and “who can you trust” are pushed back in favour of that pace. This is more like Mark Greaney’s Grey Man” series than Van Lustbader’s overly slow and complex Bourne books. The physical consequences of the Treadstone programme are highlighted early in the book, but as we move through the book the author seems to lose interest in this aspect as the action really starts to kick in.
But I enjoyed this and there is much to enjoy. Blasted through this in a day, an entertaining page turner.

Such a fast paced action packed action thriller that is very in keeping with the style of the books of Ludlum’s Bourne series.
Adam Hayes believes he put the life of the CIA, and particularly Treadstone, behind him when he left and settled into a normal, civilian lifestyle. His beliefs are brought to a very sudden and rude awakening when he has to deal with the consequences of being the recipient of an email from his best friend and fellow Treadstone operative, Nick Ford.
This first book in the Treadstone series details Adam’s journey to begin to come to terms with the fallout from the email and to right the wrongs arising from the contents of the email.
The book really is action packed and so fast-paced it kept me on my toes wanting to know exactly what would happen next and how Adam’s journey would turn out.
Thanks to NetGalley for a Kindle copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I'm almost embarrassed to put this on here, not particularly proud of the fact that I read (or partially read) this book.

This was a big DNF for me. I understand that this author writes from his position of experience. I read for enjoyment. I did not enjoy the portions of this book I read - I made it to nearly the halfway point so I gave it a good try. But....

This book was brutal. The graphic violence was deeply disturbing to me. The constant incessant foul language felt like an assault.

It is possible to write an engaging, riveting thriller type book without resorting to either the graphic violence and language. But apparently not for this author. I tossed the book aside in disgust, feeling grubby from the reading. I wish I had known this was the approach of the author before I began reading the book.

I will not be reading this writer again.

Here's my take on 'The Treadstone Resurrection'; Hollywood better be adapting this novel to a screenplay RIGHT NOW, because with Matt Damon playing Adam Hayes it'd be as good as any of the first three Bourne movies. And I am a Bourne addict. Trust me on this one, Ludlum's Universe author Joshua Hood has channeled Ludlum with this novel. The action is crisp, the scenes fly so vertically that you've got to keep up, just like one of the Bourne flicks. Incredible read, and a surprise. Hood's the real deal. Buy it, read it and enjoy the hell out of it!!!

Essential reading for future followers of Bourne type novels.

The author brings to life the world of terrorism, deceit and the brave people who fight against evil wherever it is found to enable the general population to live freely.
His characters are in the same mould as Bourne and the way he has portrayed them has the reader willing them on their way to defeat the bad guys no matter where they are hiding.
I am looking forward to reading more about the main character and his exploits.

The Treadstone Resurrection by author and former Air Division fighter JoshuaHood, is a rip-roaring Special Ops political thriller that encompasses everything we’ve come to love about the Treadsone series: hand-to-hand combat, nail-biting fight scenes, masterfully executed spy-craft and a hero who only gets better when shoved into a corner! It’s reminded me just how much I’ve missed these books, and Adam Hayes is a worthy new lead to take this series into its next installment!

Epic!

Adam Hayes is snarky, deadly, and he remembers! Imagine how deadly Bourne was, sprinkle in full recall of memory and we have Hayes. I find it so interesting that Hood gave Hayes a complete life prior to Treadstone. It makes Hayes being a part of this shady enterprise that much more interesting. I want to know more of Hayes!

“All Killer. No Filler.”

I have never read any of the original Robert Ludlum series of Jason Bourne stories, however from my experience and observations of having watched the Bourne series of films many times, I am prompted to say that Adam Hayes, one of the new generation of re-awakened Treadstone operatives, operates at a whole new level of recklessness and ruthlessness.

I have also since discovered, that ‘Treadstone’ aired as an Amazon Prime series last year, so I guess that this book is just the opening instalment in what will be a whole new series.

I note that several of the posted comments and reviews, came from ex-service personnel, who are rather scathing in their views of the technical authenticity of the narrative, my own husband amongst them probably, should he ever choose to read the book. However, having come at this storyline purely from an untrained civilian perspective, who was simply looking for a good action story, I enjoyed the ‘written word’ experience much more than I ever thought I would!

Everyone knows when they sit down to watch a Bourne, or any similar kind of all-action film, that they will be treated to a liberal dose of exaggerated action and dialogue and that some license will have been taken with the reality of any series of situations and events. However, despite being a little over-awed by the technical names and characteristics of so many firearms and weapons, and the multitudinous departmental acronyms, I found myself turning the virtual pages just as fast as I could, to see what happened next and how it all ended up for Adam!

Joshua is an author very much in his natural element, visually and descriptively writing in an area he knows all too well, drawing from his own experiences in the combat field, thus not getting too bogged down with having to plan plots and storylines and invent characters from scratch; seamlessly managing to maintain the perfect balance between plot and character driven writing, creating the combination of an emotionally complex character and a storyline where the air is crackling with tension from beginning to end.

Luckily for me, the chapters were short, taut, tense and therefore very ‘moreish’, so reading just one more on my way out of the door for work each day, was always doable!

This was a death defying, non-stop, action all the way, exhilarating adventure, which saw Adam having to dig deep into his reserves of skill, ingenuity, strength and stamina, just to survive each minute of the day, when death was so often just around the corner. Such was Joshua’s power of written characterisation, that all those desperately intense emotions were laid bare on the page, enticing me, the reader, in, gripping me and not letting me go until Adam himself was happy with the final moments of his mission, when there was a palpable exhalation of breath long held, a release of pent up tension, and my sweaty palms closed the pages of my Kindle.

Adam Hayes is an authentic, if very badly damaged character, both physically and psychologically, with a wife who was no longer able to cope and had left, taking with her his child, on whom he dotes, but rarely sees. He doesn’t want to get drawn back into his old life with Treadstone, but he has to put his personal demons aside, as he finds himself slipping back into it with ease, almost as though it is a comfort blanket which protects him from the ‘real’ world! In fact he begins to wonder at one point, in a moment of rage and frustration, when he is desperately emotionally drained, if knowing what Treadstone has done to him, is worse than not remembering!

The storyline is nothing if not predictable and involves just about all the elements you might expect; from drugs and money laundering cartels, to power seeking foreign regime leaders and homegrown corrupt politicians and government officials. However the joins which link these various elements are virtually seamless and the adrenaline pumped action flows freely, connecting all the many strands, without me having to spend too much time pondering on what the end-game might be. There was barely time for either Adam or myself to draw breath between the many surprises and twists and turns which awaited him, no matter where he went.

“You need four things to tell a story: a beginning, a middle, an end and you can’t be dead.”

If this opening book in the Treadstone saga is anything to go by, Joshua Hood has done and will continue to do, the memory of Robert Ludlum very proud!
