The first solo adventures of the now young 'new' Cable! There's what feels like quite an intriguing story line featuring a magical sword and the Spaceknights. Spaceknights as in Rom's people! There's stuff on his love life (big yawn for me); and a great idea so far only moderately executed, has 'old' Cable in the shadows! This run also has one of the more stronger X of Swords preludes. All-in-all, one of the weakest ever Cable runs so far with poor art that has young Cable looking like a knock-off Quentin Quire; and gives him a happy-go-luck reckless personality pretty much at odds with everything we've seen on Cable in the past! 5 out of 12.

Famously old dude Cable’s suddenly a kid for some reason (I don’t follow the X-books religiously so I don’t know why)! And, like new Cable, this book is for kids, basically. He pulls a magic sword out of a giant lion-esque monster, which alerts some alien robot Power Rangers to Earth to get it and nonsense ensues.

The story is so uninspired and dreary - there’s so little to Cable it makes me wonder why he even got his own series. He’s hooking up with one of the Cuckoos and that’s about it. He’s a less interesting Quentin Quire who’s into guns. And the way Cable resolves the robot Power Rangers problem is absurdly childish - which I guess is appropriate enough for a kid character in a kid’s book.

The King Deadpool scene is hilarious - Gerry Duggan still knows how to write that character perfectly. I loved what Deadpool did to old Cable’s body. And Phil Noto’s art throughout is really good. As uninteresting as Duggan’s story was, Noto always found a way to make it visually engaging.

Cable, Volume 1 is something only X-Men fanboys will get anything out of - I found it really, really boring and pointless (like most of the current X-books).

Bringing in the Spaceknights seems to be an odd choice (and a boring part of the story). There's some weird legal stuff at play because Marvel can't use ROM or the Dire Wraiths. The rights of who own what between Marvel and Hasbro is vague and given their return in this story should have been left alone. Having Cable date all five Cuckoos at once, kidnapped mutant babies, and mutant worshipping cults seem like enough to juggle without the Spaceknights on top of it all. Phil Noto's art is fantastic.

I’ll be honest; I’m struggling to see the point of Baby Cable... but, to be fair, I never liked original Cable, either.

Gerry Duggan’s story has its moments, and I did chuckle a couple of times, but overall left me reasonably entertained without being completely satisfied. It felt like empty calories. I had mixed feelings about the use of the Rom-less SpaceKnights; they acted so off-model for the original SpaceKnight philosophy that I have to question why they didn’t just use another alien race. It felt like Marvel were just waving a little flag at IDW saying ‘we still own the rights to these guys so nur-nur-nee-nur-nur!’

This being Gerry Duggan, there was the obligatory Deadpool appearance... which was actually one of the highlights of the book to me, as groan-worthy as it was.

As always, though, Phil Noto’s artwork was beautiful. I love how he isn’t afraid to switch styles and techniques from panel to panel while still maintaining the flow of the story.

Story: 3 stars
Artwork: 5 stars
Overall: 4 stars

Even better than Hellions! Young Cable is so much better than the old one. Really fun and breezy story, delightful characterization of young Nathan and his relationship with the Cuckoos (mostly Esme in this book, but he’s dating all five, of course), and some fantastic artwork from Phil Noto. Looks like after a few unfortunate misfires early on, Dawn of X turned out really good for the most part after all, and now I actually can’t wait to delve into that whole X of Swords thing that’s happening right now.

As 'amusing' as a teenaged dudebro Cable trying to concurrently date all five of the Cuckoos might be, this title was a flop for me. I won't be continuing.

Youth vs experience

I was interested in the idea of the young Cable. I wanted this to be great but only turned out ok for me. Here is Cable young, more fun happy than skilled.

There are 3 stories going on here simultaneously. Young Cable Vs his older self, Cable investigating a missing mutant baby, and Cable Vs alien Space Knights to keep his new sword. While all this is going on he also has a dating life.

I was expecting a more action packed book, it turned out ok, but I am a little disappointed it was more drama than action.

Well, there had to be one Dawn Of X book that didn't land properly, and unfortunately it's Cable.

I'm not sure if it's because it can't seem to work out what it wants to be. Gerry Duggan wants to tell a story about stolen mutant babies, a mutant worshipping cult, Cable having four girlfriends at once, the Galadorian Knights attacking, and also some X Of Swords prelude stuff too - all in four issues. It's just too scattered, and none of it lands as well as it could. And that's without even getting into the emotions Cable is feeling as a result of killing his future self and replacing him in Extermination. Yeesh there's a lot.

The artwork is astounding though - Phil Noto can do no wrong, and Cable looks beautiful no doubt. It can't always carry the story, but at least my eyes can be happy while my brain is confused.

Cable's latest solo series falters out of the gate. It's not bad, but it's too scattershot to be as impactful as it should be.

This was a quick, but fun and enjoyable read. Really loved the Deadpool moments when he showed up here. Young Cable is a nice change of pace from all of the seriousness in the other X books.

It starts out mundane boring-ish, focused on de-aged Cable acting like Kid Loki. Meh, not terrible but been-there…

Then comes Duggan’s muse, and every panel with Deadpool-related content is just like a polite ball-tickler (probably pants-on). Laugh my ass off. Seems Gerry really misses the ol’ cryptkeeper lunatic.

This was such a fun read, Gerry Duggan writes another hit while Phil Noto kills it on the art. I initially wasn’t sold on baby cable but after reading this he’s quickly grown on me. Overall this was very solid, I’m excited to read the next volume.

When I picture Cable, I picture a grizzled anti-hero in a grimdark future filled with burning trash barrels. Gerry Duggan's Cable is not that Cable. This is "Kid" Cable. He's a cocky teen with guns, telekinesis, and a sweet new sword. The sword plays into a plot involving the comically inept Knights of Galador (spacefaring cyborgs). There's also a plot revolving around a kidnapped mutant baby and the Order of X. Oh, and Old Man Cable kind of appears?

Gerry Duggan's Cable is jam-packed with adventures, but unlike most of the other X-series, it's fast-paced and quip-heavy. There are no walls of dialogue like X-Factor, no deep cuts like Hellions, and it's not overstuffed like Excalibur. Oh, and Phil Noto does the art and he's like, top five for me. So that's a huge plus.

I guess I don't quite understand how Old Man Cable and Kid Cable line up (time travel antics sailing right over my head, as usual), but I nonetheless had a ton of fun with this volume. Maybe I just like the X-series that are barely about Krakoan politics?

I have no idea why this book exists. I get the Young Cable solo series aspect but it only loosely ties into the Dawn of X stuff, features the Spaceknights (but not ROM!) for absolutely no reason, and is only 4 issues long. It really feels like this series could have just kicked off as part of X of Swords or following X of Swords and not felt as rushed. Still wouldn't have explained the Spaceknights though, going to be puzzled by that one for a while.

Cable is a lot of fun. Gerry Duggan is probably my favorite writer on the X desk currently, and Phil Noto's art is so gorgeous. I didn't expect to care about a Cable series, but this was a surprise hit for me.

Overall, I've liked the new direction that the X-books have taken and so I was optimistic when I picked up this collection. But I was quickly disappointed.

But first, the art is wonderful. Phil Noto's style and execution is top notch. I could look at his art all day.

As for the story, the series centers on a teenage version of Cable who can best be described as a cocky, swaggering douchebag. He's like the worst kind or prep school lacrosse player except he has super powers, lives in Krakoa, and is in the process of dating all of the Stepford Cuckoos. The story kicks off with Cable recovering a mysterious sword that reacts strangely to his cybernetic parts. When he touches the sword, three Spaceknights on the other side of the galaxy suddenly awake and zip off to earth to recover the sword. Then, without knowing that he has space warriors coming after him, Cable turns a date with Esme into a search for a kidnapped mutant child. What follows is a somewhat disjointed adventure which pits Cable and Esme against the Spaceknights while they make no real progress in finding the missing child.

Besides my profound dislike for this version of Cable and the choppy storytelling, the other thing I disliked about this story is the portrayal of the Spaceknights. The Spaceknights are based on characters from the 80s-era Rom series which Marvel no longer owns the rights to (due to Rom being owned by a toy company). In that series the Spaceknights were heroes - though some with more complicated pasts then others - who defended their planet and others from invasion by the shape-changing dire wraiths. But here they're just an indistinct group of angry alien invaders themselves. They're so unrelated to the old characters that they may as well be a completely different set of aliens. It's like Duggan had never read any of the Rom books and just decided he wanted to crap on an old Marvel series he knew nothing about.

If this is supposed to be a lead in to the X of Swords storyline, then my hopes for that story are now pretty low.

Duggan entretiene. Y en esta historia corta, lo logra y empieza una trama que no se cuanto se interrumpirá con X of Swords. Veamos como sigue. Le bajo la nota a 3, porque el dibujo de Noto no me agrada.

X-Men 2021 Dawn of X project continues!

Ratings and links to previous reviews under the spoiler:

This has all the hallmarks of a fun Gerry Duggan book, and it was a breath of fresh air after a recent Excalibur/X-Force/Wolverine run of dark books. Is it the best book? Nah. Was it entertaining? Yup.

Unfortunately I don't have much to say beyond that. The wackiness of the "plot" felt off-kilter, though we did get a fantastic cameo and some levity in these weird X-Men times.

Phil Noto continues to be a fantastic artist, though I have the same problem with him in this book that I've had with him for 10+ years: he just doesn't draw action well. His art is incredible in still form, but going through his action scenes feels like flipping through a storyboard.

Still gorgeous, though.

Gerry Duggan's "Cable" is engaging, but it ultimately comes off as slight fun. At this point, I am not clear on Cable's backstory, but he is young here, apparently having killed his older self (as is revealed in these pages).

This story is set during the Krakoa era, and it begins with Cable taking a break from partying on the island to pluck a sword from a monster's foot, mouse-and-lion style. It turn out to be a lost sword from Galador, and its removal activates a bunch of mothballed space knights, sending them to Earth to try to reclaim their weapon of legend.

It's interesting, but Duggan treats the plot pretty prefunctorily, using the Space Knight's cosmic power to set up a trippy (and, sure, funny) scene with Deadpool as well as some time-travel shenanigans. It's all handled pretty easily, making for a clever read without much meat to it.

The art by Phil Noto is solid. The story is decent, but the X-men line seems pretty thoroughly fragmented at this point; I'm not confident much meaningful will come out of the different titles, including this one.

Raccolta in volumetto brossurato dei primi 4 numeri della nuova serie di Cable. Ai testi Gerry Duggan (che già scrive Marauders, tra le X-testate dell’era Hicks-man) e ai disegni Phil Noto.
Storia molto carina, fresca e godibile.

Indispensabile?

A tonally unsure and very slight collection, this story isn’t funny enough to be a comedy, isn’t serious enough to matter, and isn’t fun enough to feel breezy. It simply doesn’t hit whatever target it was aiming at … and the handling of Cable’s relationship with five women is handled especially poorly. How did they get together? How does Cable feel about them? What is it about the Cuckoos connection to each other that makes this okay? And since when are there five of them? I don’t get it. And if you’re thinking this is explained in another X-book, it’s not—the only mention in another X-book was that the Cuckoos were interested in getting set up with Cable. Nothing more.

A weak title that feels unsure of what it wants to be. Let’s see if that changes with volume 2.

Sad. I mean, I understand what they are trying.

What do you do with a character who's, arguably, older than his parents? Where do you go with a hero being written into a corner so many times that the writers are running out of ways to retcon his story?
How do you make him cool enough for the teens and twenties to pick up?

Have his younger self kill his older self. Screw paradoxes (we have an out)!!

These are the tales of a newly minted teen Cable who replaces his elderly older self and becomes way more l33t!

Author Gerry Duggan brings his comedic talents to Cable and its a mixed bag. I really liked young Cable, his personality, his dating life, his interactions, with his family and old Cable's friends. However, the story wasn't good. This seems like an oddly placed tie-in to the next big crossover and is shoehorned in. Phil Noto's art was good but too plain at times. Overall, an underwhelming tale that needed more of what makes Cable special.
