Three beautiful agents for the crown. Three prime suspects. One sinister plot to destroy a fledgling kingdom... Meet the Queen's Angels!
When Robert the Bruce's queen formed the Angels, an elite group of spies masquerading as her ladies in waiting, she probably didn't imagine they'd be called on to save her life. But that's what happens when Queen Elizabeth is entertaining the Fraser delegation.
Luckily, her lady Courtney is deadly with a bow and recognizes the assassin. Court's history with the band of thieves and murderers who raised her means she has a very different skill set than most women in the queen's retinue, and she's not afraid to employ it. But she is used to working alone, and the idea of being saddled with an unwanted partner—particularly when that man is gorgeous, dangerous, and a suspect—is galling.
Ross Fraser, the queen's longtime bodyguard, can't believe one of his kinsmen could be involved in this dastardly plot. He'll do everything in his power to prove his clan is innocent of treason, even if it means partnering with a testy and deadly thief-turned-spy... One who holds his heart in her hands after that single night they spent together years ago.
Ross must choose between his loyalty to his laird and his loyalty to his heart, as Court's "family" proves she doesn't even understand what loyalty is. When metal hits meat, can this unlikely duo learn to trust each other, or will the plot to bring down the Scottish monarchy succeed?
I felt this book was rushed. There wasn’t real depth to the characters and we were often told things instead of seeing them in action. I also felt the Angel’s skills were overrated and that the writer doesn’t have much skill in writing on actionable characters. This doesn’t mean it wasn’t a decent read, i just felt she should have gone for something more in her comfort zone.
The Highlander’s Angel. This is a witty and a very entertaining book. Ross and Courtney, always seemed to be on the serious side. Well mostly Courtney. Paring the two up to hunt down the traitor to their Queen was a interesting challenge for the two. Thank the Lord Honor was there to keep these two strong willed warriors from locking arms. It’s very clear from the beginning that the plot was the big motivation as to Courtney and her team clearing all obstacles as they make their way to the Queen. The storyline has some realism to it, as well as some logic. The characters all are very interesting, but I find that Ross is my favorite character. He seems a little less tense when he’s with Honor. He has a kind lonely heart. The passion that he has for Courtney speaks volumes in the story. Together these ignite a fire that they certainly didn’t want kindled. I enjoyed the humor and the entertainment among the characters. Until next time my fellow readers… read on! I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
"They were Angels; the Queen's ladies. And more than just ladies in waiting, they were her agents. Her Majesty had pulled them into her confidence years before, and most of her court knew they--and the others like them--were special." Thus begins the tale of these special ladies, Courtney, Mellie and Rosalind. The three had been undercover getting information that the Queen may be attacked by an enemy and they were trying to get close to her to relay information. That's when after a little altercation (so funny!) Court was grabbed by a man. "That's when her mind caught up to her eyes, and she sucked in a breath." "Ross Fraser." "Deep green eyes widened with surprise, and she knew the exact moment he recognized her, because his lips--those horrible, gorgeous, full lips--twitched upward at one corner. God help her, but she'd always been more than a little smitten with those lips." Ross had been a guard of the Queens up until two years agowhen he returned to his Clan Fraser and help the new laird. Court hadn't forgotten him. The adventure begins! Just adored this story! A Beast named Honor, Intrigue, suspense, humor, trust and an attraction that could be deadly. Caroline Lee is one of my favorite authors and has created an amazing start to this new series! Cannot wait to read more!
A while back I had read the little prequel short story and it had made me curious about the other Angels. This was really cheap on Amazon so I went ahead and grabbed it
The story follows lady Courtney who is deadly with the bow and had been raised with a band of thieves and murderers. With her different skills, it is without a doubt a great idea to have her be an Angel for the Queen. After an attempt on the Queen's life, Courtney has a mission to follow a lead. However, she will not be going alone. She is saddled with Malcolm Ross who had been a longtime bodyguard and can't believe one of his kinsmen might be involved in the plot. He will have to make a choice between loyalty to his laird and his loyalty to his heart.
Courtney kicks ass. I wish we could've seen more of her skills in other battles. She's a fun character and I wish we had more time with her. I liked Ross too. Especially with how much he loves his dang dog. So cute! Ross and Court were very cute together and they fit each other well. Ross has his heart on his sleeve and Court is a little cold and reserved.
Oo that baddie certainly was a baddie. However, I feel like there is more going on. I do not think that baddie is the main one we will be seeing. We'll have to read book 2 I guess to see what happens next ;) !
Honestly....I wish we had had more time with Court and Ross. I feel like there was more we could've seen. They had hook-ups in the past and obviously had feelings for each other for years, but I felt like I was missing something with these two. We needed more time to see them fall in love.
All-in-all this was a fun story with a fun cast of characters. I am curious to read more about the other angels. Hopefully, we get more time with them. Maybe we'll see more of Ross and Court in those. I'll give this 3 stars.
I so love kicka$$ heroines and the queen's Angels are definitely that!! This is Courtney and Ross' story and what an adventure of a story it is! Court and Ross have a history together, albeit a short one, and when they're ordered to partner in search of information, it becomes quite interesting. Learning to trust each other doesn't come easy and with Court so use to taking care of herself, she needs to learn it's ok to accept help. Add a huge dog named Honor and you've got story that will keep your interest from start to end.
Immerse yourself in a historical romance that takes place during Robert the Bruce's time as king of Scotland where loyalties are questioned, danger abounds and passions run hot. I definitely do recommend this book!
Yes, there's a bit of a cliffhanger (a pet peeve), but despite the fact this is a sprawling series, this story is pretty much complete, though it sets up the next book. There's no real extraneous crap going on, just setting the stage for the plot and then Courtney and Ross get the mission done.
And man, is Ross Fraser a doll--and his dog as well!
I loved it! What a great start to the series! Court, once a member of the red hand and now one of the queen’s angels, is a fiercely strong woman that is not too shabby with a bow. Ross Fraser, a brawny highlander, was once a protector of the queen but has been loyally serving his clan’s laird. Both are at court when there is an attack on the queen. They set out on an adventure with Ross’ big loyal dog, Honor, to figure out if the red hand is behind what happened at court. The two of them have not seen each other in a while and their internal thoughts, chemistry, and banter is sweet, spicy, and funny. I am looking forward to reading about Mellie and Lachlan!!
"The Highlander's Angel" is book one in "The Highland Angels" series by Caroline Lee. It was very well written, and I enjoyed Ross and Courtney's characters. My favorite part is when Courtney is talking to Ross's dog, Honor, and tells him to go fetch firewood. I will definitely read more from this series. I'm not big on historical books, but this one was great.
After reading Ms. Caroline Lee’s story, The Bruce’s Angel, in the Once Upon a Pirate: sixteen swashbuckling historical romances anthology, I was hooked and excited to read her new series, The Highland Angels. Let me say it did not disappoint, and she is a creative storyteller. The story is full of mystery, suspense, angst, and passion. When an attempt is made on the Queen’s life, it will be Courtney and Ross Fraser that stop the assassin and learn that ‘The Red Hand sent him.’ A name that is all too familiar to Courtney.
“The Red Hand was the name of the group who—where I grew up. The man who leads it is a friend of mine. Or at least, he was,” she added quietly.”
“She turned to the other Angels, but when she opened her mouth—likely to bark a command—Queen Elizabeth spoke again. “I think you and Ross Fraser will make a fair team. Yes indeed, Ross Fraser. I think you and Courtney will make an interesting team. If you cannot trust your partner, whom can you trust?”
Ross and Courtney have a past, one night of passion years ago, but now they will be traveling for weeks together, gathering intel and working for the Queen. How will they handle the past and the present? What will they encounter on their journey, and will they learn that you can be loyal to more than one—if those loyalties intertwine?
“She had been attempting to run away from him, from the idea of having to be partnered with Ross Fraser, and everything it represented. She liked the look of him, and when they’d landed in bed together, had liked the feel of him too. But now, alone with him on this mission, she was coming to like him.”
“He knew from experience, there was a moment in each journey, each mission, where things—no matter the hardships and adversity—began to blend, to become normal. And that was a problem because for a warrior, complacency meant failure.”
A life and death mission for the queen, two lovers depending on each other, the attraction has never left, but can they really trust each other? What if the answers they receive could bring trouble to another? How will they handle the passion that is stirring—the memories of that one night?
“But her body—and her heart—wasn’t listening.”
“Ye need no’ hide who yea are, Court, neither good nor bad. I think ye should trust yerself, and trust me. No matter who ye were in the past, what matters is now.”
The steamy story takes a historical time with artistic liberties since history has blanks as to Queen Elizabeth, and Ms. Caroline Lee has used that to spin an interesting tale of love and danger. I am already looking forward to the next book in this series, The Laird’s Angel—with Mellie.
I read this book because Caroline Lee wrote it. I’m not usually a fan of Regency era books or stories written in accents. The Highlander’s Angel is the exception. It was thoroughly enjoyable!
4 stars ( 5/4 stars Margaret Mallory, Julie Johnstone, Monica McCarty, Lynsay Sands, Donna Fletcher)
4 stars: This book was good, worth reading in a few days. It hit pretty much most of my personal markers for a good read and well roundness of the book. my personal markers for a great read...1. smart and engaging writing, 2. Humorous, 3. sexy interactions and 4. stories with family/friends.
The development and interest in main characters and Secondary characters was enjoyable. It kept me wanting to know and read more.
Laugh out loud with humorous moments. The give and take dialogue was wonderful as well as action filled.
I loved the writing around the women empowerment (it wasn’t over the top for me). Badass women rock.
Movement of the book flowed for the most part. Book writing/conversation engaging. Not a lot of historical accuracy (no big deal to me), not a lot of internal character dialogue and not a lot of descriptive scenery written out.
Romantic /sexual content (kissing, oral and love making scenes) was throughout the book. Nothing over the top and was intertwined rightly in the story telling. 3/5 rating hotness and steam with some ‘dirty’ words thrown in 😉.
I love series around family members or a group of friends. I love the series even more when the author intertwines those characters throughout the book series (it’s a pet peeve when authors don’t do that because what’s the point of the series and introducing the characters if they are not going to interact throughout the series).
would absolutely recommend the book and the series. you don’t have to read the series in order however you’ll miss the true telling of the story for books .5 to 3.
This is my first book by the author. Not much impressed. I felt there was much talking than action. Although the premise of the story is quite unique. There are three lady spies who are queen's angels on the lines of Charlie's angels. Our lead pair had the worst chemistry. They both kept remembering the "one passionate night" spent together. It was getting boring. The steam factor was low. I understand may be that caters to a wider set of readers. Nevertheless, the ending felt rushed as well. The leads took on an entire band of theives. We can accept that too but I don't know I m not convinced. The only good thing was the female protagonist 'S characterization. Courtney had a unusual background. She was raised among thieves n murders n she was a skilled archer. She wasn't a virgin n had taken multiple men as lovers. She wasn't a 18year old typical regency heroine. Malcolm wasn't your usual Alpha either. I felt Courtney was more badass. Would definitely like to read few more books by the author before making the final decision regarding her strengths n weaknesses. This is also a rather long review on my part
challenging relationship between a good hearted warrior and an emotionally stifled female warrior
She’s got a past that is unclear. She’s one of the Queens Angels and deadly with her Bow. She is loyal to the Queen but carries emotional scars from a tainted past. He’s loyal, honorable, funny, capable and strong. He respects her abilities and is attracted to her. In a time where women were chattel and treated as such he treats her like an equal. Fascinating story that continues forward. I read book 5 of the series first and I think that is helpful in understanding this. There is a slight disconnect between the purpose of their mission and Courtney and Ross’ relationship. I know there is another book continuing the saga.
For a fast fun read, Caroline Lee gives you one with witty banter, strong characters, great imagery and blending of intrigue, battles, and fun furry pets.
Courtney, Court to few, is the bow woman, the range of weapons into the group. She is the strategist for defending them.
Ross Fraser, Once one of the elite queen's bodyguards is back to protect his laird, Lachlan Fraser who has been summoned by Queen Elizabeth.
When an assassin tries to kill the queen he incriminate the Fraser clan. So Ross volunteers to find out if this is true. But he will have to work with Courtney.
Can the two find a way to be around each other? Will they find who is behind the attempts? Will their past help or hurt them? Join in as the search for the Red Hand gang to get answers but find more questions.
Courtney is one of the Scottish Queen Elizabeth's Angels. A group of women who are her personal spys and guards. After an assassination attempt Courtney must revisit her past to find the truth.
Ross Fraser was one of the Queen's guards until he had to return to his Clan for a while. Now he must work with Courtney to find out if his Laird is behind the assassin.
This is an action packed adventure with wonderful strong characters, especially the the dog.
Set in medieval Scotland at the time of Robert the Bruce this is nowhere near as daft as many of Caroline's books. It is a simple adventure story whereby our heroine is tasked by her queen to track down the people behind an assassination attempt. She is forced to take, as her partner a former lover who she can no longer fully trust.
The main part of the story deals with their trip and the rebuilding trust along with exchanges of confidences. We get the building romance, development of character and a conclusive fight to round things off.
Scottish history can be hard to write as the author stated at the end, especially when using a female lead like Elizabeth. It is an interesting idea, to have female spies/assassins as your guard. Courtney was a strong female with a difficult background. I wonder if Cam will ever show up in person? Ross is also a strong character with loyalty and honor (not just the dog Honor!)
Ross Fraser- was a bodyguard for the Queen but went bk to support his clan has a dog named Honor. Courtney / Court- strong independent warrior who is excellent with a bow. Pledge to protect Queen Elizabeth of the Bruce I enjoyed reading this engaging story that is well written ( a bit rushed at times) with strong characters and an interesting plot. Their story has a hea.
Can you work together to find out the truth? Court never thought she would see Ross again. Now he is back and he needs to find out the truth but can she trust him? Ross can't believe that his friend would betray the Queen and he knows that he needs to find out why? Can they work together to find the answers that they both seek? Will they act on their attraction that never went away? A good read. Great characters
An enjoyable tale of two of the Queen’s guards and their mission to uncover an assassination plot. Ross Fraser and Courtney met briefly but intimately on a previous occasion so passion is bubbling just underneath the surface. An interesting plot with likeable characters. The idea of the Queen being protected by a band of Angels is interesting.
The Queen of Scotland has her own spies – she calls them her Angels. Courtney is set on a mission to the The Red Hand gang. When Court was young she was taken in by the gang and taught her their crafts and how to use a bow and arrow. She was then forced to leave the group and make her own way. This is a great story of intrigue and politics. I love how strong Court is.
WOW, terrific start to an exciting treacherous series. Short story that was a fun and sizzling hot story. Intimacy before marriage that had my temp rising. I loved every detailed minute of it. Heat level 2 out of 5
Absolutely loved this story, it had everything. A tough heroine, lovable hero, a gorgeous dog, adventure and loyal friends don’t forget steamy romance. Definitely recommend. Loved the authors style of writing.
A second chance romance wrapped in a historical spy thriller
I love that Courtney is a tomboy, a talented archer, a spy for the Queen, and has a heart of gold. She and Ross had “known” each other years before and now thrown together their chemistry is explosive. Great short read.
I enjoyed reading this book very much. It was a little draggy early on but picked up and I just breezed through the book. I’m on to the next Angel. Looking forward to reading them all! 🥰🥰🥰💜💜💜😊😊😊
Wonderfully descriptive writing and characters! I loved that the story line stayed strong in who the characters are from start to finish. Being a strong woman with skills should never be a threat to her man!
Almost a Scottish version of GOT with the way this story had intrigues, mysteries, betrayels and royalty. The book touched alittle on background and left a simmering trail of sexual tension.
Not everyone has the Queen's help for a second chance.
Queen Elizabeth stepped in and saved Courtney from the hangman... but what is this about a mission with Ross Frasier? Oh my, now what is she going to do? Lots of action and twists and even some hanky panky.
