Despite their grueling battle and narrow victory over Oscillatory Universe, Nega Nebulus was unable to get any hard evidence of the connection between the White Legion and the Acceleration Research Society...or so they thought. Thanks to a key exchange captured by Chocolat Puppeter's replay card, they've got all the proof they need! Let the fourth Meeting of the Seven Kings begin!
Reki Kawahara (author of Accel World, Sword Art Online) has three chronic faults that almost completely destroy his literary works. The first is that he has a strong sadistic streak in creating adversity and suffering (emotional, physical, etc.) to his main characters. So much so, that I truly believe that inside (subconsciously maybe) he is inadvertedly rooting for the antagonists and bad characters of his stories. The second is that he spends most of the pages of his stories recounting, resummarizing and retelling all of the past events and experiences. Sometimes this is so excessive, that one page after the other, are read and reread of things that happened in other volumes and things that just happened as well. (maybe due to the long pauses between his volumes and writing). This retelling of his story over and over again takes up about 30-40 percent of each of his volumes. The third fault, is that almost in all his volumes, the author apologizes, for taking too long to write (a simple story arc), or that because he is too verbose, over extends his story (anecdotes, explanations, etc.) I feel really bad for the main characters. I cannot take it lightly because his characters and his target audience is both young ones and teens. The author is trying to convey that to be able to succeed and be happy you need to suffer and overcome adversity. This might not be a problem if analyzed lightly, but you read his stories (violence involved - decapitations, amputations, cheating, betrayals, evil intent, etc.) and you realize the intensity of the constant bombardment of abuse by the author, to his characters. This story premieres on September 22, 2020 in English (Yen Press). According to the author it's animation is "in the works (again)" but because of his partnerships (editorial, distribution, etc.) his stories in Accel World haven't really been told. The first 25 episodes of it's anime covered maybe 3-4 volumes of the 25 volumes he already has published in Japan. The movie lasts 129 minutes of which the first 32 are summaries of the first episodes of the anime. His current Oscillatory (white king) arc has already taken with this volume (17-22) six volumes and goes on and on (to at least the 25th volume) because the author lacks the courage to end his stories.
With the events of last volume introducing somewhat of a mystery that needed to be revolved, this volume was a quick pick up and fast read as I sought to have my questions answered. As some questions were answered many more were asked as we got yet again another showing of Black Vice slash Ivory Tower and the Accelerated Research Society making a move that just left me floored, totally and completely. Without spoiling…wow, I was like the characters at the end of the volume crying.
I really love this Accelerated Research Society arc and love how it not only expands the accelerated world, but also the characters, and their interactions with each other. Seeing how everyone responds to the events around them, tries to go beyond their limits, and tries to put their hopes into the ones around them is just amazing. Even more so that it isn’t only a Corvus thing but also a ICMB thing. Even the other kings of pure color and their subordinates seemed to put faith into Corvus and the others. It will be interesting to see what super legion and friendships develop from the events of this volume.
Outside of that, it was an emotional volume at times. I always feel for Haru and his desire to befriend Wolfram Cerberus as well as the other characters and their attempts to rekindle friendships as the situations and circumstances evolve. Kawahara is a mastery of writing this type of material and it showed well here.
Compared to Sword Art Online, Accel World is way better in its plot development, covering many plotholes and information from earlier volumes. This has been reinforced in this arc which is coming to its climax. Amazing volume and eagerly waiting for the next one!
Accel world has definitely evolved into a strong series, and has now delivered 2 consecutive volumes with a lot of plot development and loads of action!
