I have reviewed quite a few Disney Cookbooks but never an entirely princess themed one! First, I'll delve into the various sections before giving my overall thoughts at the end.
Chapter 1: Cookies and Bars
We start off this cookbook with a wide variety of recipes. Some of the recipes felt more like they matched the princess's vibe such as Moana's Heart of Te Fiti Pinwheels (colored sugar cookie dough shaped like the swirl) or Ariel Under-the-Sea Shells (vanilla madeleines dipped in white chocolate) . And some fit the characters' culture more, like Merida's Scottish Shortbreads or Jasmine's Pistachio Honey Baklava. Though a few of them felt like more of a stretch, such as Aurora's Magical Kiss Cookies (Peanut Blossoms).
Chapter 2: Pies and Tarts
Here we can have fun options like Rapunzel Chocolate Hazelnut Tart or Belle "Be Our Guest" Tartlets (cocoa tart shells filled with raspberry whipped cream). If you prefer desserts that fit more thematically with their stories, there's options like Snow White Sleeping-Apple Pies or Cinderella Maple-Pumpkin Pies. There's even Enchanted Rose Pies (based off of Belle, of course) which have apple slices artfully arranged like a rose within mini pie shells.
Chapter 3: Cakes and Cupcakes
Once again, we seem to have recipes that either fit the theme or fit the flavors of the characters surroundings. For example, we have Ariel Mermaid Cupcakes (a vanilla cupcake decorated with a mermaid tail) or Belle Last Petal Cupcakes (lemon cupcakes with strawberry roses on top). And for more flavor-based options, we have options like Kakamora Coconut and Mango Cake for Moana's island life or there's Tiana New Orleans Doberge Cake (a multi-layered custard cake).
Chapter 4: Morning Treats
I was a little surprised to see this section at the very end of the cookbook given the breakfasty theme to everything! But I do like the items we were given - like Merida Bear Claws (using frozen puff pastry, thank goodness!), Cinderella's Magical Pumpkin Bread, and Tiana's New Orleans Beignets (a staple in any cookbook involving Tiana!). There's Mulan Great Stone Dragon Buns (filled with a sweetened bean paste) and Meeko Muffins (made of cornmeal with blueberries, based on Pocahontas).
Overall Thoughts
One thing I did quite like about this cookbook is the sheer variety of recipes offered! There was a good balance of recipes that were made to match the characters' overall vibe and culture, which made it fun as a baker. You could make something authentic OR you could just make something pretty.
Something to consider - this cookbook is definitely geared towards older teens and adults. The recipes are more complicated than a children's cookbook and often required more advanced techniques. I could see a family making something together, but it would definitely be adult-led.
I did like how many of the recipes were accompanied by photographs but it definitely was not all of them, which was a bummer. There were plenty of new-to-me recipes that I would have appreciated a picture for.
This cookbook did have custom art (kinda), each princess had their own unique drawing that accompanied "their" recipes but nothing much outside of that. And there was a paragraph before each recipe that explained why it was included in the cookbook - which was definitely a bonus.
And this may be small, but many of the recipes were "Princess Name" "Recipe Name" - i.e. Rapunzel Sun Drop Cookies or Ariel Clamshell Macarons. But sometimes that would flip towards "Princess Name"'s "Recipe Name" like with Snow White's Wishing Well Pie or Ariel's Secret Grotto Cake.
I felt that the possessive version of the names flowed much better and I kept tripping up when writing down the recipes for the review because I wanted to add that 's to the names!
My daughter and I really enjoy this sweet treat cookbook already. It’s fun to look through and choose a princess themed treat to make together. We enjoy baking and cooking together and we both love Disney. So this only made sense. They are pretty simple and easy to follow for me and my 5 year old. The only thing I wish is that every single recipe had a photo. I love collecting different kinds of cookbooks and I have quite a few. I definitely prefer the ones that have pictures for everything. That’s why I’m taking a star off. People want pictures of alllllll the food items. Not just a select few. It’s hard to know what something is when there is no picture.
Oh my goodness, this book is full of delicious treats! The pastries are either part of the princess storyline or inspired by the princess and look fantastic. I have started to talk with my daughter about what recipe we should make first. We really cannot wait to dive in and create these yummy treats! I wonder if we can wear our tiaras while making the goodies or wait until we can partake in eating the treats?
Baking recipes galore. If you need a fun dessert recipe in a pinch this is the place to go to. From gorgeous cakes and pastries for birthday parties to a classic homemade Disney princess themed cookie, this book has it all. I love LOVE this book.
These recipes are good, but this book is not made for families to make treats together. The print is very small and the instructions are complicated. I would not get this book for a child or teen baker. This book is for advanced bakers.
Fantastic collection of recipes. I'm incredibly happy I bought this book. I only wish there were larger text and more pictures. Still, I recommend it to everyone who likes Disney princesses and baking.
