EXTREME SUPERNATURAL HORROR CONTAINED WITHIN This is an extreme horror book. It contains scenes of violence and graphic descriptions that are not for the faint of heart or easily disturbed or offended.
JOAN lives a miserable solitary existence in a gloomy apartment building. She hates her boss, hates her job, and is desperately lonely after her ex-girlfriend cheated on her and ran away with her ex-best friend. Every day she wakes on the sofa. Head throbbing, nauseous and sick, unsure even what day of the week it is. Then the screams begin. Coming from somewhere inside the apartment building...
Brought to you by Warren Barns, the eldest, and by far most f*#%ked up Barns Brother.
Very ok for me. Joan was an interesting lead, but the story just never really found its footing. Too many elements of 'what if' and not as much 'what was.' If the story expanded into Joan a bit further and allowed things to organically develop, rather than trying to just stick to a predetermined formula, it would have made this a much more meaningful horror experience. Still had some fun visuals, but, as a whole, it just didn't come together much for me.
I've ticked the box for "psychological thriller" for this book. Only because I'd probably get flagged for creating the category, "Mind f*ck". Fast paced and completely terrifying. Loved it!
A strange, but weirdly satisfying short horror story which, as can be expected, contains all the usual gruesome, gory and bloody trimmings of unsuspecting scenes of death and mutilation. However, for me it somehow lacked that little bit of extra spice, malice and unforeseen twist that would have changed it from a regular good story into something far more superior, sinister and welcomingly darkly disturbing.
No doubt about it, this guy is a very talented writer and I fully intend to read more of his work in future. Rating: 3.5 stars.
This shortie by Warren Barns is another wonderfully horrible story, of which the Barns brothers are famous. I recently discovered their work and have added them proudly to my horror library! What great writers!
