I was really surprised by this one. This is a very different; unique Goosebumps entry.
The protagonist, Jake, is son to famous horror movie writer/director, Emory Banyon, aka the King of Horror. Early on in the book, we're introduced to this father-son relationship that is kind of... surprising. In the sense, that it's even there at all, (parents/adults usually have very little significance in GB books), and in the sense that Emory, (Jake's Father), is kind of a jerk. He scares his son through-out the story, Jake doesn't even ever call him Dad, only calls him by his first name, and feels like he has to prove himself to his father and tries to act tough / be brave... but always ends up wimping out.
So this story is a little similar to Are You Terrified Yet? - in a way, it is a little bit of a repeat, but here, we have a more creative, dynamic character relationship; one we've never seen before in a GB book, or at least, one I've never seen. It's almost kind of sad, and you feel bad for Jake, even though he's a bit of a wimp. It makes you wonder if his dad, Emory, is the reason that Jake is a wimp for always scaring him. He just seems like kind of a jerk of a character.
Towards the second half of the book, the story starts to take a twist that is a bit predictable. The story starts to head in a pretty obvious direction and further hearkens back to the Are You Terrified Yet plot structure. One gripe I did have about the twist ending, other than its predictability, was that it didn't seem quite believable based on what we know about a certain character. The ending didn't seem to fit quite as naturally as it did in Are You Terrified Yet.
I know I'm making a lot of comparisons but that's because the books are really similar, but yet both unique in their own way.
I did really enjoy this book and appreciate its different aspects that make it stand out, but I still wouldn't say that it's one of my favorites.
I think I would give this one a 3.75 / 5
