This was okay, the blurb says it all.

The Hero, heir to the chieftain of the clan, was tricked by his father into an engagement w the daughter of the neighboring clan.

The heroine and her fáther have been invited to attend this wedding so they go off to Scotland. This is the heroine’s first time to go to Scotland, the home and clan of her father, so she is quite excited.

Funnily, she is diappointed that the fiancee of the Hero is quite unattractive. 😁 Not her idea of a fairytale princess, unlike the Hero who does look like her idea of a Prince. Needless to say the Hero himself is quite put out by the looks and dull personality of his own fiancee.

Of course the Hero promptly falls in love w the heroine since she is lively and beautiful, the exact opposite of his fiancee 😂 (poor guy) they cant do anything about the situation though, so it seems that their love will be unfulfilled.

Until….the fiancee goes missing and is feared murdered. A false witness points a finger at the Hero, but the heroine knows she was with him during the “time” in question. The Hero does not want her to reveal this information since it will put her in a compromising circumstance and he does not want any gossip attached to her.

Anyway… the real murderer tries to do away w the heroine as well but she is rescued. The clan now knows the identity of the real murderer of the fiancee, but he gets away. The shock of it all kills the old Duke (the chieftain) so the Hero is now the Duke and chief of his clan.

However the Hero tells the heroine and her father, that though he intends to marry the heroine, they need to wait a few months so no scandal can be attached to the heroine when she becomes his wife.

Some months pass, the heroine and her father are able to prepare a trousseau, and pack up their house in the country. Heroine’s father will now be living in his beloved Scotland again, and the Hero shows up to get his girl and get married.

The end ❤️

P.s.

Also nothing happens to the person who wrongly accused the Hero so, some loose ends here Dame Cartland.

When her father, Colonel Alister McCarron, asks her to accompany him to a family Wedding in the North of Scotland, the beautiful young Sona jumps at the chance, not just to meet her relatives in the venerable McCarron Clan but also to see the dashingly handsome Marquis of Inver, for it is he who is to be wed.
Thrilled by the Fairytale grandeur of Invercarron Castle and her heart fluttering at the Marquis’s considerable charms, Sona is bemused to find that his fiancée is the extremely plain Lady Jean McBora.
Then she overhears that he is being forced by his father to marry Lady Jean to reunite the squabbling McCarron and Borabol clans and to prevent him from marrying a London beauty who would not be suitable for a future Chieftain of the Clan.
And too late to stop herself, she finds that she has fallen hopelessly in love with the Marquis. And he with her. But their love is doomed.
First by his forthcoming marriage of convenience to Lady Jean and then again when the Marquis is charged with the murder of his bride-to-be, a crime that Sona knows in her heart of hearts that he did not commit.

The beautiful Sona McCarron and her father journey to Scotland from England. There Sona meets the Marquis of Inver and Torquil McCarron. The Marquis is betrothed to the plain, unattractive Lady Jean. A marriage which has been arranged by the Marquis's father, Duke of Invercarron, Chieftain of the McCarron clan. Sona falls in love with the Marquis and when Lady Jean is murdered, the Marquis is accused of the crime.
I have never read a Barbara Cartland novel before and the only reason I read this book is because the heroine and myself have the same name, Sona. It is, I assume a typical Cartland story. Hand kissing, smouldering kisses and a damsel in distress. Not my usual read, but I have to say I enjoyed it.

The handsome hero was in a dire predicament in this one, he was expected to marry an ugly bride. The beautiful heroine was horrified by the idea, but luckily the ugly girl was murdered and the good looking were united. Hurrah!

1,5. Cartland's characters are always foul, and her kitschy bitchy Mean Girl act is in full force here, like in a bullying teenage nightmare. Scotland's also a rather mundane setting for her trademark, the exquisitely exotic fairytale scenery.
