If you're wondering how to build a powerful, strategic movement that can make big wins for climate action, this is your guide. The Climate Resistance Handbook brings together a wealth of learnings from the climate justice movement. It starts with breaking social myths about how social movements win. Then dives into campaign tools and frameworks you can use. It closes with how to grow your group and use creative, impactful actions and tactics. This book is full of stories of climate warriors from around the globe and historical movements. It's filled with practical wisdom and inspiration to make you more effective, more active, and ready for what's next.
From campaigning to spectrum allies, the book is full of strategic tools through inspiring examples from around the world.
From a first reading, I found it was more like a manual on how to use 350.org's training modules (which is a very good idea anyway). Perhaps what I expected to see was not just campaigning tools but also some qualitatively different from previous experience: something that could make us win system change in a decade (which none of the social movements referred to in the book have done). With this I mean system change in an anti-capitalist sense, but I also worry that we need international organizing and strategizing now which the book doesn't address. In any case, these are not questions to be answered in an introductory book subtitled "I was part of a climate action. Now what?", so perhaps I am just imposing my personal political agenda on a book which doesn't claim to address it.
It is an easy read, with clear examples and straightforward remarks. All activists will find something new in it, and this is an extraordinary success for a 60-page book.
✨⭐8 stars out of 10⭐✨ A very informative read about how to create a movement. Not informative on climate crisis topic itself.

"Movements are sometimes easier to see from afar (which is why, in this book, I tell stories both of climate justice movements and other social movements). When we’re in the middle of a movement, it can look chaotic and disorderly. Movements are not clean. They are messy. And when inside them, we are painfully aware of their shortcomings."
I stumbled upon this book when I thought I need to read books about climate change. It's one of the most pressing issues in the world right now but I have no interest in it until now. I browsed scribd and found this book. I only saw the word "Climate" and "Handbook", expecting it will tell me informations about climate change. Turns out what I got was knowledge about movements and how to organize them.
I was never part of any movement my whole life, so the book is very insightful. Movements and campaigns, be it for climate or social issues, didn't just suddenly appear out of nowhere. It needs people to start it, to grow it and to make its impact. It needs strategy. It needs communities. And thus, movements and campaign need to be organized. I learn a lot about the theories of these movements, from step to step creating movements, to upside down triangle of campaign targets and so on.
As for the explanation in the book itself, it's quite easy to understand. There are many real life examples to demonstrate the points of the theories. But because I picked this intending to read entire different topic, the book more often bored me out.
CONCLUSION I didn't get what I want to know from this book. If you want to read about climate change, this is not the right book. But if you want to read about how to create a movement or want to know the secrets of those successful movements and campaigns out there, this is it. Pick this book.
Quick read explaining how campaigns can lead to change whether in law or corporate policy. Very well written and clear, I learned a few things, though it is not at all specific to climate related actions.
This book contains lots of insightful materials, esp on social campaigns. Though the title is quite intimidating but the contents itself were so easy to understood!!
Creating climate change campaigns could be a challenging work to do due to it is not very common topic we talk about. This book started off the social movements by getting the public action and attention through ways of campaigning.
If you wanna begin your activism journey and focusing on social campaigns—let it be digital activism or else, this book is a good starter 🙌
3.5 stars. Short but sweet, if a little informal. I enjoyed being able to dip my toes into the principles of campaigning. However, I would have liked some more sources other than 'please check out our website'.
