Warren Prescott is a veteran amputee who can't catch a break.
When the VA calls him in for an experimental procedure to restore his leg, Warren is amazed. Finally. he will be able to feel the warm sand beneath his feet again, or so the doctor promises.
Lying on a table, Warren is told by the doctor that everything is going to be okay. He's going to have a brand new leg...and a much better life.
Too bad it was all a lie.
The next time Warren opens his eyes, four centuries have passed. Somehow, he's standing in the middle of a battlefield, stuck on a distant alien planet, far away from home.
To make matters worse, his body appears to be entirely synthetic. He's a cyborg, nearly indestructible and enhanced for extreme combat.
Now, with centuries of time missing from his memory and no idea how to get home, Warren is left with no choice but to fight against those who would see him enslaved... and free as many of his brothers as possible along the way.
“Memories are the only thing we keep us throughout our lives.” “In war, each side feels they’re the good guys.” A great debut o the new series! An accomplished storytelling, cinematic whilst also keeping it real and gritty. A smashingly original concept on the whole cyborg trope. Both authors ensures that this is a debut to be remembered, full of twists, turns, action and hope.. A real page-turner: The Cyborg Corps #1 offers an insightful glance into the dangers of A.I through a twist of intriguing events. The carefully crafted narrative builds up anticipation whilst developing a series of characters that you can’t help but invest in. It’s emotive, with heart throbbing and wrenching moments, the lives of a few humans disrupted through deceit and manipulation. Loved it! A very intense read! I can’t wait to read the other publications in this series by Chris Winder and JN Chaney! Next in line, Built to Last #2!
A new series that I think will turn out pretty good. I know the start was kind of startling, and it got better from there. Only problem, there are a lot of Veterans that could only hope to be in Warren Prescott’s position. Having lost a leg in Iran, he’s at the VA to have his prosthesis adjusted; one of many times he’s had to have this done.
The VA technician just couldn’t get it right. If he fixed one part, then another spot would start hurting. It was typical of the kind of visits that Warren had experienced and he was getting just a little tired of it. So, after a few more adjustments that, again, didn’t work, the technician suddenly left. He quickly came back with an older guy who looked like a doctor and was in fact a doctor. Dr. Burgess began offering Warren a way to get his missing leg back or to a point where he wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. The procedure was experimental and all Warren had to do was volunteer. Well, most military guys don’t “volunteer” for anything after that initially volunteering to go into the military. But, Dr. Burgess made it sound so promising and then hit him with the kicker that the government would pay him $200,000 for his time and trouble. That sold the deal so Warren signed on the bottom line.
Surgery should have been just like the many other surgeries Warren previously underwent when his leg was first lost. Dr. Burgess and his staff started right off on Warren, but they didn’t seem to know what part of him needed replaced. Instead of just working on his leg, Warren could feel them cutting into his chest and that was definitely something wrong!
Warren finally wakes up from the surgery wanting to get some answers only to find that he has no clue where he’s at. He quickly realizes that he’s in the middle of a battle and someone is shooting at him. He’s instincts kick in and he begins to protect himself and starts returning fire. As the fighting continues, Warren suddenly realizes that he has two legs to stand on and he can feel the ground equally with both. He’s also in some kind of combat armor with a weapon he’s never seen, but knows exactly how to use it. This is just the beginning of a strange new world that Warren finds himself some 400+ years since he made the deal with Dr. Burgess!
I find the characters pretty well thought out, at least for Warren. He has a background that’s some what explained and we get some short stories about some of his new “friends”. I also find that although Warren does wake in the middle of a battle, he’s not one to want to fight. He prefers to avoid that if all possible and finds that, for the most part, those around him feel the same. Now only if they would be allowed to act on these feelings. It seems like something is controlling Warren and he doesn’t like it one bit.
A good start to what could be a pretty good series. Some of the story seems too easy, like Warren’s plans always work out, and that just doesn’t happen. Still, I’m sure you’ll be surprised to find out how different life has become for Warren and a whole lot of other cyborgs!
I enjoyed the premise of this book. A complete soldier core of cyborgs how great. Like most first books in the series a little slow because of world building. There’s a lot of exposition and some character development. The middle of the book is a little slow but picks up at the end. It is well worth the read eagerly awaiting the second book next month.
This book has an intriguing storyline. Makes you think what happens when you give the rights of who you are to someone else. Will they be benevolent and treat you right or just use you for their own benefit. And then how do you retrieve yourself. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series
Chaney and his co-authors really know how to create an all encompassing storyline and “world” to hold the reader’s attention and imagination. Another great storyline of betrayal, struggles, and dedication. If you think you know what is coming next as you read this story, you’re fooling yourself!! Loved this book!
Warren Prescott is a veteran who lost his leg in the Middle East. He needs the prosthetic fitted properly because it keeps giving him pain. While the technician at the hospital is messing around with the prosthetic a doctor comes into the room and asks if Warren would be willing to trial a new type of prosthetic that will give him feeling back into the missing leg. He will have to undergo an operation but his leg will be as new. He agrees but funny things happen and the next thing he knows is that he is standing on a planet where there is fighting going on and he’s in the middle of it! He later discovers that the planet is Reotis and the people there live under domes. He also discovers that he is now a cyborg and a member of the 1st Cyborg Corp and is owned by the Grand Republic of Unified Systems. They have been fighting with the CoWs (the Commonwealth of Worlds) for control of Reotis for years it seems. The problem is that Warren has old memories but not new. He does work out that he has lost 400 years! 400 years of fighting, dying and being reset (brought back to life in a new cyborg body and given a download of his most recent memories). He decides to rebel and finds that he has more friends than he realised and that he needs all of his memories! This character is strong and the world building is good. I have to wonder why everyone is fighting for control of Reotis rather than a more earth like world where you don’t have to live in domes. There’s a lot going on in this tale and a lot more to come. The rebellion has only just started!
A nice theme, "getting screwed over by the government in a new way" . Good read! This is a good forum for my rants. One of the three great lies: 1. The check is in the mail. 2. Of course I'll respect you in the morning. 3. I'm from the government and I'm here to help you. Lately, I'm thinking that a fourth one is needed. " Elect me and I will do lots of good stuff for you. You can trust me. "
Not a bad new series by Chaney. Characters were interesting, not what I expected but not bad. Definitely looking to see more character progression in future books. Supporting characters seem very cardboard ish. But I am looking to forward to seeing where this series goes.
As I have come to expect from Jonathan Chaney well written and thought out stories I have totally enjoyed this one and look forward to book 2. Shame as it won't be out till May lol. Well worth a read and well worth 5 stars
Actually it was much better than I had expected it to be. Lord knows there was enough action to raise the heartbeat of the most skeptical reader. I am certainly looking forward to the next story.
Interesting characters, interstellar intrigue, and some good old butt-kicking action made this a great start for a new series. already looking forward to the next...
This was an enjoyable and entertaining SciFi romp with some interesting characters and supporting cast. Good character development and a well-played plot. Looking forward to the next book.
I'm a big fan of military science fiction, and this book is no exception. Love the cyborgs, the spaceships, the electronics, yeah, all that stuff. Great fun this book. Certainly going to read the next one, I like this beginning of the series. I'm interested to see where it goes.
I’m glad I started this book on a weekend because I couldn’t put it down until I was finished. Betrayed by people he thought he could trust and 400 years of lost memories. The Cyborgs take back with the help of some full humans. I look forward to book two.
Another thread in the series has started off strongly. JNC has a pretty impressive track record and for good reason. A highly enjoyable way to lose a day or so.
Cyborgs are not the usual main characters in a novel. Especially when they can be repeatedly rebuilt. This story was unique and highly enjoyable. Recommended
I loved this book. It is a great example of it's genre. This is not War and Peace. It is a fun, witty, enjoyable ready well worth the time it will take.
This series is an imaginative twist for military sci-fi. It is well written with good character development. The series is well worth your time to read.
