This is a new author for me. The book is about espionage and intrigue.

The book is well written. There are two protagonists in this story. Michael Wolfe retired from the Marine Corp where he was a sniper and from the CIA. Nadia Picard is retired from Mossad. I must say the story provided a great travel adventure as the story bounced back and forth between Missouri and various places in Europe. Somebody is trying to kill Wolfe and Picard. I could hardly put the book down. The author grabbed my attention right from the beginning of the story and held it throughout. I am definitely looking forward to more stories by J. C. Fields.

I read this as an audiobook downloaded from Audible. The book is nine hours. Paul J. McSorley does a good job narrating the book. I have listened to McSorley narrate other stories and enjoy his skill at narration and the sound of his voice.

Wow. This is the second time my husband has read a J.C. Fields thriller first, insisted I’d love it, and he was right. It’s terrific! Like the author’s Sean Kruger series (don’t miss it), this stand alone has tons of intensity and non-stop action. The main characters are retired CIA sniper Michael Wolfe and Nadia Picard of the Mossad. In Barcelona they get pursued and shot at by a trained assassin named Omar Said. Feel the excitement yet? You’ll love the clever twists, clear writing, and a good love story too. With locales racing from Spain to Washington, DC, to Florida and then to Tel Aviv and Paris, it’s a fast, fun read and very hard to put down. My husband and I are now both fans. Well done, J.C. Fields – 5 stars!

"Answer the question, Kevin."
When Michael saw who his target was, he knew it was a trap. The woman sitting in the cafe was Nadia, Mossad agent and former girlfriend. He jerked her out of the way just in time for the sniper's bullets to miss them both. But who wanted them dead, and why? So they ran and hid in the safest way they knew how: they faked their deaths. But eventually they would have to face up to those questions when, two years later, it became obvious that someone suspected they were still alive and wanted to remedy that.

This is an intense and intriguing thriller which takes the reader with the main protagonists across parts of America and Europe in their search for people, both dead and alive, to ensure their own personal safety. Whilst the character of Wolf steadily emerges, that of Nadia is less well defined: she is very much the secondary half of the double act, treated like the little woman to be told what to do, rather than consulted over life and death issues. Which seems unlikely, given that she was Mossad trained and, despite their long and very close association both in working and personal situations, Wolf was not even aware that she, like him, was a trained sniper. Plus his constant comments to her about her use of reductions in her speech really annoyed me; I can imagine what it would have done to a feisty, real life woman. But these are minor grumbles. The story keeps the reader guessing as it twists and destructively meanders through a cast of spooks and politicians, removing some of them along the way. Who can be trusted? And, again, why were they so badly wanted dead? Good plot, well written. And also well read by Paul J.McSorley, who delivers with a fitting subdued passion, his pleasant on the ear voice gives individual protagonist voicings, though occasionally these are not easy too differentiate in conversation. Over all, though, a fine performance, well suited to the book content.

My thanks to the rights holder of A Lone Wolf, who, at my request, freely gifted me with a complimentary copy via Audiobook Boom. It was a thriller which kept me engrossed, and guessing, the whole time. This is the first of a new series and I very much look forward to continuing the journey with Michael Wolf and his wife. Recommended.

Thought it might be a spy novel but even though the novel is littered with CIA, NSA, Mossad, and KGB current and former agents, no one is doing much spying except on themselves. Nadia and Michael, following an abortive mission in Barcelona, realize that someone is targeting them and they set out to determine who is targeting them and why. It then evolves into getting the bad guys in assorted clever ways.

I'm sure the title is intended as a pun although the Michael Wolfe is about as far from a lone wolf as one could get. He has help not only from Nadia, but Joseph, JR, the hacker, and numerous other people both inside and outside of government. I'm sure the ending is supposed to be some kind of twist, but I saw it coming from the moment the character was introduced. Those kinds of "twists" just seem to be emulated all the time.

While I enjoyed the book, I am very troubled by the world portrayed by the author, one in which rogue elements, ostensibly operating in the interests of national security (which often have more to do with their own security than the nation's) operate with relative impunity and send secret operatives off around the world assassinating people they do not like. It seems the antithesis of responsible democratic government and, I hope, represents merely a simplistic fantasy world.

It's certainly very readable, hence the 4 stars, even though I hated the world it creates.

International Intrigue and Missouri

This is the first book I have read by Fields. The plot was sound and the action sufficient. The characterization and the settings were detailed enough to be realistic. I do feel the story could have used a little more flair.

I don't understand the positive reviews of this book. The plot is implausible and the characters are wooden. The audiobook narrator speaks stiltedly and the French accent on one of the characters is laughable.

Another winner from J C Fields

I have read all of this author’s books and loved every one of them. I ask myself why buy books from other authors like Grisham, Lee Child, Robert Crais and more for $14.99 just because they have written very good books years ago. They are now not worth that premium price. Other authors such as Michael Connelly, Daniel Silva and Jussi Adler-Olsen are still worth the premium and I place J C Fields right up there with them.
Looking forward to the next Sean Kruger book as well as the next Michael Wolfe
By the way, I live in Springfield and that makes these books all the more fun.

A Lone Wolf by J.C. Fields is a fantastic listen. I love how the author writes incredible imagery and injects great details. Thrillers always pull me in, and I loved the multiple locations for this book. I could envision so many details from the countryside to cities, and the different continents. Paul J. McSorley was incredible bringing the characters to life. He gives them distinguishable voices, and inflects the right emotions. I really enjoyed the characters of Michael and Nadia. The storyline of this book is full of non-stop action, twists and turns, and has one questioning who to trust. I absolutely loved it! I definitely hope the author continues more books with these characters.

Juicy story. Likeable characters.

Very intense story of intrigue, international escapades and spies. Lots of characters some of whom would make excellent friends to have. The only negative is that I found the story quite long which I noticed as I began to skip pages. Overall a good and interesting read.

This is a well crafted and written, non stop action and mystery novel. The two central characters are in mortal danger but from who and why? They decide the best defence is attack to lure out their adversary. Full of twists and turns brought to life by good narration. Very enjoyable.

This is going into my DNF pile. I was looking for a detective mystery and bought this in a sale. Lone Wolf is a covert alphabet group production. I'd put it in league with Robert Ludlum's books. I've read a few Ludlum's. Loved The Bourne Identity which I read in high school. I don't read a lot of books that deal with government/military intrigue today.

It could be argued this was a poor choice on my part and I wouldn't disagree.

I'm about a third of the way through when the story jumps the shark. Here's the set up. Our protagonist, Michael Wolfe, ex-marine sharpshooter turned political assassin, has a safe house he's built using property left to him by his grandfather. Completely traceable, but okay. He's allowed an old marine buddy suffering PTSD to live out on the property near him to help out and watch the place. This happened five years ago.

Michael, who is now hiding out there with an old girlfriend from Mossad, finds the body of this friend staged as a suicide. In the course of investigating the death, it is discovered that the man Michael has been helping for the last five years was not really the man he knew from the military. But the dead guy is the real McCoy from the unit all those years ago, just not the man Michael has been living around for five years, because that man was a lefty.

The old, he's not holding the gun in the right hand it can't be suicide gag. *Yawn

Now, I haven't read on for the explanation of this, but really, there's only a couple and they both involve someone planning 6+ years back to plant someone with a degree of training and maybe some plastic surgery in Michael's life.

This is probably going to turn out to be someone's idea of taking care of him by keeping a friendly nearby (because if they wanted him dead why wouldn't they just kill him?) who now needs to be off saving him some other way, but even if it isn't, I don't care. I can no longer take Michael or this book seriously. The Mossad girlfriend is probably in on killing the friend and they're waiting to kill Michael for some stupid reason that will also have me shaking my head. Or maybe that was the dead friend impersonator's now missing girlfriend - who obviously stayed around to talk to Michael before packing a bag and clearing town. She could have been helped by the local sheriff who knows more than he's saying.

DNF pile, here you come Lone Wolf. The title is even off because Michael isn't doing any of this alone. Sounds cool though.

This is my first time reading the work of JC Fields. The Lone Wolf is a fast moving, wide-ranging, plot-driven thriller. It features a team: ex-Marine sniper and retired CIA operator, Michael Wolfe, whose special training dovetails with his motivation to help his country, and with his ex-Mossad girlfriend, Nadia Picard, a highly skilled, gritty woman whose motivation, likewise, is to help her people. When they nearly get assassinated in Barcelona, a string of stints dot the investigation. It moves in quick succession through many locales, from Washington, DC to West Plains, MO to Virginia countryside southwest of Alexandria, to Albany, NY to Edgefield County South Carolina, Key west Florida, punctuated with international trips to Carmona, Spain,Tel Aviv, Israel, Paris, France, and Barcelona and Madrid, Spain.

The dialog is quick, choppy, sometimes bare-bone, which allows for the fast, dynamic storytelling. “You know something I don’t?” “He met with an accident here in the state.” “Fatal one?” “Yes.” “Can you give me the details?” “Not at the moment. I don’t have any.”

For Michael Wolfe and his girlfriend, starting over would mean breaking all ties to the past. Will that remain an unreachable dream, when they are constantly faced with the realities of international intrigue?

Five stars.

Not so fast...

With the introduction of Michael Wolfe, Fields takes from the world he created for Sean Kruger and goes more to the realm of international thriller. He expands a bit (there's now Wolfe, former military and former CIA sniper) and Nadia Picarde, former Mossad) to balance a dual protagonists , uses Joseph Conrad who is the National Security Advisor for the President in this book and a continuing character in all of the Kruger books, as well as a few others. I believe that one needn't know the Kruger world to read this, but it's nice as a fan to see the inclusions.

Wolfe and Picarde escape from an assasin, disappear from view, and eventually emerge using different names. They are tasked with uncovering the person who ordered their murder, and along the way change names, makes use of the resources of Joseph Conrad and HE from the Kruger books, get married, have sex, kill people, defeat enemies and more - not necessarily in that order, I might add. They involve the Mossad, the CIA, the FBI, hackers and more. There is some fun technolog

Michael Wolfe is an ex-CIA agent who has contacts with Mossad. Nadia Picard is a former Mossad agent, and Michael’s former lover. Years ago, Michael and Nadia were separated by Nadia’s devious boss, who wanted Nadia for himself and lied to them both. The book starts with Nadia and Michael’s near escape from a sniper. It turns out that 3 CIA agents and 2 Mossad agents have died under similar circumstances in the past year. The rest of the book centers around their search for the person or organization behind the attempt.

Michael and Nadia are smart, tough and competent, exactly what one would expect from the most secret of secret agents. They make a likable, sympathetic and very dangerous couple. There are a lot of suspects in this book and a lot of obstacles are thrown in our heroes’ way, with red-herrings and blind alleys galore.

The book is well-written and suspenseful. The action is plausible and makes sense. I liked it a lot and have already purchased the next book in the series.

If you are a Sean Kruger fan you will love this new series by J. C. Fields. This international spy thriller weaves intrigue that takes you from Barcelona, Paris, Washington, DC, and the Missouri. There is always a new spin in a new locale. From a fast-paced start, Michael Wolf reunites with a spy he thought was dead. She has some scores to settle herself and together they take on finding who set them up as sniper targets. From the first few pages you will be thrown into the workings of the CIA, Mossad, and Special Forces. Michael and Nadia must find out who the spies are and separate them from the moles who may or may not be dead. While I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough, there are many twists and surprise information you don’t want to miss. J.C Fields’ new series
raises the bar on international spy thrillers and you won’t want to put this one down.

Can Michael Stop His Own Assassination?

Michael Wolfe has been hired to eliminate an Israeli spy: Meet the person at an outdoor restaurant, ask a question, get the correct answer, dispatch the person, and disappear before anyone notices. A simple assignment. Little does he know how his life will change from that point forward. Old acquaintances have decided Wolfe is expendable and they will stop at nothing to eliminate him and the person he was assigned to kill.

Wow, this story captured me from the beginning and never let go. Wolfe is a charming and highly efficient ex-military sniper who is trying to settle into a quiet life. Somebody, though, wants him dead at any cost. The result is a story that builds in tension as it progresses toward a heart-pounding ending.

I read J.C. Fields' previous series about Sean Kruger and liked it, so I was happy to discover this new series featuring Michael Wolfe. This is book 1 in the series and I suggest reading it first to get the background about Michael and also his colleague Nadia. They are interesting characters and I like them, which is always a prerequisite for me to enjoy and want to continue reading a book. A few of the other characters in the book are spill-overs from the Sean Kruger series and I liked that too, because they are good guys that I'm interested in. There is a lot of action and a number of bodies fall by the bullet (and a couple other ways too). There was only a couple of bad words in the book and no sex scenes - although there is romance. It's a fast-moving suspense and I enjoyed it.

Some new characters, some old characters, all woven into a story of seeking retribution for past crimes.

Michael Wolfe and Nadia Piccard are two former agents, one from the CIA and one from the Mossad. They are reunited when Michael rescues Nadia from certain assasination in Barcelona. Who wants Nadia dead? Could Michael have also been a target? Thus starts an intercontinental search for supposedly dead former espionage agents from three primary spy agencies and an unraveling of how they are intertwined.

J.C. Fields again does not disappoint. A fast paced story with interesting plots.

International intrigue and suspense

This was a great book to read that had two key characters in the plot. Wolfe is definitely a master sniper but has skills of finding people and is able to tap into other people and resources. I like the personality of the character and how the book has so much that was hidden from being figured out until the end of the book and even managed to throw a couple unexpected plot twists in as well. Wolfe is the guy you don't want to cross and has the ability and skills to find any one as well as to take them out of needed.

Great start to a new series. This is a new to me author and I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It was fast paced with many twists along with way to keep you guessing as to who is behind the assassination attempt of Wolfe and Picard, and why. There is an interesting mix of characters and I must say I'm a little envious of the "hidden" home of Michael's. If only I could afford such a place. I'm looking forward to reading more books by this author.

Michael & Nadia are a great pair

Fields does a fantastic job of building his characters' backgrounds so the reader knows them as a friend. Location & scenery descriptions are thorough and gave me a feeling I was actually there. Each turn in the story is impossible to anticipate, pace is fast and never quits and Michael & Nadia find out more than once their friends are not their friends after all. Look forward to book #2 in this series.

This book was SO hard to get through. Usually, I like a good spy thriller, but not this one. The storyline was so complex and not in a good way. Full transparency...I think one of the reasons that I struggled so much with this was the narration; it was awful. This book had characters from many different countries and required a narrator who could handle that. I found the voices to be annoying and ridiculous. I think this made a difficult book even more difficult.

This was the first J.C. Fields novel I’ve read. As a Marine veteran I really enjoy these types of military thrillers. This story was well written and very easy to read. It’s not bogged down with too many side plots but has enough mystery and action to keep you interested. I really liked our main characters and how they work together. Great story. Lots of fun! Definitely moving on to the next one!

Enjoyed

This was a great mystery that kept the pages turning to see what would happen next. The adventures of Nadia and Michael kept the reader enthralled as the figured out who was after them and what they would do next. As they chased down each danger, the person who was behind the first attempt on their lives was not revealed to the end.

Excellent but

I found this book to be riveting. However, I disliked the swearing and sexual aspects thrown in, which in my mind, are totally unnecessary. In fact it detracted from the enjoyment of the story. Would definitely give 5 stars and recommend if was 'cleaned up'. Would be interested in more of his work, with the same proviso.

A gritty pages turner

Wolfe and Nadia work well together in this exciting spy thriller. It seems a good hacker is now an essential element in these books. JR does not disappoint. Also, it must be a lot easier to come out a hero when your inside help is as efficient as Joseph, who happens to be the National Security Adviser and just one step removed from the President.

This book by J. C. Fields will keep you guessing with all the twist and turns. An ex-Marine sniper and retired CIA operator, Michael Wolfe, and his ex-Mossad girlfriend, Nadia Picard, are targeted for dead. An attempt to assassinate them in Barcelona is something they barely escape. Why are they targeted?
All the characters are true to each other and have great characteristics.
