Everyday Evangelism

Rate this book
Everyday Evangelism - the title of this powerful book is a challenge in itself. Our secularised society - and perhaps a lack of spiritual courage - has meant that, for many Christians, evangelism is anything but everyday. And yet the very real need of our times is for a commitment to spreading the Gospel message on a daily basis. As has been said, we need a spirit of evangelism, not just a spurt of evangelism. Commitment is, however, only part of the answer. Anyone who tries to engage in Gospel witness will soon find out that enthusiasm alone will not suffice. We also need to be equipped. This book has been written with a view to empowering a new generation of Christians to evangelise with confidence and purpose. The practical techniques taught by McCauley and Williamson are based on a thoroughly biblical foundation, and - unlike many volumes on evangelistic methods - they concentrate on presenting the Gospel message in a winsome and relevant manner, rather than on pressurising individuals into making decisions.

Really useful book

Perhaps, like me, you often struggle to communicate the Christian Gospel effectively to your family, friends, and peers. You know it matters a lot to you, but it just seems like you have so many hurdles on your side that stop you from witnessing? Perhaps you say to yourself, 'I'm not an evangelist - it's someone else's job', or 'I'm afraid that I would let down the Lord', or even 'I wouldn't know what to say if he addressed me with hard questions'. - this book is written for you.

Williamson and MacCauley take up this challenge in two parts. In the first part of the book, the writer discusses 'Tactics' - How to engage in conversations and steer people towards the gospel, using tactics, often illustrated from the life of Christ. Example conversations are highlighted and developed, teaching basic conversation skills from a Christian perspective. The focus is then made on the content of the message and useful tips from the writers own experiences.

The second section is dedicated to 'Apologetics' - that is the reasoned defense of God, the Bible and the Christian worldview, set over against our secular culture. The writer takes up several key areas of 'conflict' - dealing extensively with subjects such as suffering ('Why does a good God allow suffering and evil?), the reliability of the Scriptures, the Bible's view of salvation and the person of Jesus Christ and His resurrection.

There is a robust grounding in biblical principles throughout, as well as extensive references (without it becoming too academic). It is also clear from the illustrations cited that this is a working 'handbook' from two authors who have hands-on experience in these areas. They clearly know their topic well and have presented it in a form which is easily accessible to Christians with a basic understanding of Bible doctrine.

I highly recommend this book. I found the practical teaching in it very helpful - I wish I had it in my hand 18 years ago when I started out as a young student. Get a copy for yourself and buy one for your friend!

A very helpful wee joint effort here. I like the way that the book is structured, laying down a good explanation before firing onto the practical. Paul and David, both good humble men, who very much try apply what they have been so diligent in explaining in this book. Lovely to see a bit of this in action over the past few weeks.
