When a nurse is murdered, Detective David Grant recognises the hallmarks of a serial killer called Travis.
Twenty-five years ago, Grant caught Travis for the murder of five women and the murderer has been incarcerated ever since. The problem is, Travis was at the hospital in custody when the nurse was murdered but he was in the constant custody of two police officers.
Determined to solve the case, Grant recruits a specialist to his team, Ruby Silver, a top criminal profiler. But Ruby is hiding something from her colleagues.
Who is the killer and what is their motive?
Grant and the team must work quickly to solve the case as the body count rises.
Introducing Detective David Grant and Psychologist Ruby Silver.
KILLER MOTIVE is the first book in a new crime thriller series by best-selling author Ann Girdharry. The series features Detective David Grant and a top criminal profiler, Ruby Silver. This police procedural is enhanced by providing the reader with greater insight into the mind and motive of a killer. This fascinates me, and I feel that this novel will be well received and appeal to a wide audience range.

Many thanks to the author and The Book Club Reviewer Request Group (FB) for my digital copy.
KILLER MOTIVE by Ann Girdharry is a riveting start to a new British crime thriller series. This new to me author had me intrigued with all her characters, on-the-edge-of-my-seat with her thriller plot and gave me a chilling in depth look into two serial killers.
DI David Grant is a 25 year veteran of the force with a stellar career and record. He is intelligent and dogged in his pursuit of the truth. When a nurse is found murdered, it bears all the characteristics of a serial killer from Grant’s past. The killer is in the final stages of terminal cancer and at the hospital for treatment when the murder occurred.
Ruby Silver is a research assistant, who is the true author of a highly acclaimed publication on serial killers. Grant recruits Ruby to assist his team, but Ruby has secrets of her own on why she is determined to be on the team.
As DI Grant and Ruby work together to uncover the identity of the copycat killer will they be able to stop him as the body count rises?
I was entirely engrossed in this investigation, the psychological twists and all the characters in this thriller! Ms. Girdharry’s plot was rife with twists, surprises and red herrings that were never over the top, but quite believable. Ruby was an interesting character to add to the mix of a normal police team Her backstory and emotional growth during the investigation pulled you in emotionally and added extra depth to the story. All of the other team members were fully fleshed and I will be looking forward to reading more about them.
I highly recommend this book for a great thriller read and a wonderful new group of characters to follow in future books!
I enjoyed the total red-herring that Girdharry pushes the reader towards in this crime novel. However, it was such a forceful distraction that I found myself frustrated that I had guessed the conclusion of the novel so early on in my reading. Ok, so I was completely wrong yet, it meant that my overall enjoyment of the story had reduced.
There are strong characters within this novel. Ruby and Grant are the key protagonists and both take central stage for this murder investigation. Ruby’s past is revealed throughout the story and I enjoyed reading about Amy’s background; for me, I think this was the most powerful part of the story as so much is revealed at this stage. Ruby is a likeable character and I had hoped her past would be disclosed, at least to Grant. There is no discovery about Ruby and, as suggested by the writer’s acknowledgements at the end of the novel, this is only the beginning of the story of our crime-fighting duo, Ruby and Grant.
I enjoyed reading a book that uses a criminal psychologist as one of the key characters. Ruby is used to help Grant and his team to create a profile of who may be committing these copy-cat murders. At times, she comes across as more intelligent and “switched on” than the police officers: I had to keep reminding myself of her criminal research background and that she was deliberately recruited to move the investigation forwards!
The crimes driving the story are typical of a murder narrative. I wanted the perpetrator to get caught and was frustrated by the police force never quite catching up. I found the copy-cat motif interesting and, when the revelation had happened, enjoyed making connections with the dying serial killer, Travis. The movement to France did not seem to add much to the plot and I wished that Girdharry had omitted this from the narrative entirely. It just felt like an attempt to extend the investigation and perhaps make it more far-reaching?
The only criticism I have of the narrative is how I felt frustrated by the plot development. Pushing the reader in one direction, I felt Girdharry was lessening the impact of the story. Not feeling much suspense, I spent the majority of the story wanting to see its conclusion. Whilst I was incorrect in my predictions, I think it would have worked better if the writer had been more subtler in her suggestions.
Nonetheless, it is clear that Ruby and Grant are going to make a successful team. I would be interested to see what crimes they are able to solve in the future and I think this is a promising start to a new detective series.
With thanks to Bloodhound books for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is the first book, in what I’m hoping turns into a long series, following DI David Grant and his team.
When an incarcerated serial killer from DI Grant’s past falls terminally ill and has to obtain treatment at the local hospital Grant seizes the opportunity to question him on two unsolved cases. Both the public and hospital staff are on edge but everything takes a turn for the worse when someone is brutally murdered in the same pattern. How can this be? A very frail Travis is being heavily guarded yet this has his signature stamp all over it. Is this a copycat? DI Grant recruits a dynamic but docile psychological profiler, Ruby Silver to assist the team as the bodies start turning up.
I loved the fast pace of this book and I didn’t want to put it down. At one point I thought I had it all figured out and I was ok with it. Little did I know that the author wasn’t done toying with me and kept adding another element. A definite must read! I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.
If you want a book that keeps you guessing then look no further than Ann Girdharry's Killer Motive. The characters are really likable, making you want to know what is about to happen in their lives next. I am really looking forward to the next installment.
What a cracking start to this new series by Ann Girdharry! It is well-written, gripping from the outset and full of amazing twists and jaw-dropping moments. It would give too much away to comment on the plot; suffice it to say that DI David Grant is a fascinating character, and his relationship with Ruby the psychological profiler, which begins in this novel, is set to develop interestingly in forthcoming books. I loved it!
Wow! This is incredible. I loved the concept and the plot completely drew me in. The characters are complex and the way it looks at familial relationships, trauma and motive is just sublime. I know it's easy to say what a brilliant book it is and to say read it, but it truly is a phenominal story. At no point did I acutally have it all figured out and the pace and tension was at times almost intoxicating. I've read some of Anns other books before and this I think has to be her best yet!
Because I read the second book first, I was already introduced to Detective Grant and profiler Ruby Silver but it didn’t lessen the enjoyment. Killer Motive is a tense, tightly plotted thriller that manages to stay exciting, while deftly weaving together past cases and present ones. Murder, revenge, and two engaging heroes make for a promising start to this series.
Killer motive by Ann Girdharry. A fantastic read with some great characters. I thought my theory was correct but what a twist. Brilliant. Looking forward to reading more of this series. Loved Grant and Ruby and the team. 5*.
An enthralling read for lovers of psychological thrillers.
Nurse Mandy Jones meets an undignified end at the hospital where she works.
The killing has started again.
Convicted psychopathic murderer Travis, known as the South Coast Killer, is now in the final stages of terminal cancer. Even in his last weeks of life Travis emits an air of control, playing the power game right to the end, reminding DI Grant of his failings to find all the missing girls from the case he worked on 25 years ago.
DI David Grant seeks permission to question Travis before he no longer has the chance, believing he has killed at least 2 more than the 5 women he was convicted of. Grant successfully requests access to the prisoner during his move to a non-prison hospital for specialist treatment. The power games begin. Will Grant find a chink in Travis’s armour to enable him to finally win?
Orphaned Ruby Silver has been working as a research assistant for Professor Caprini, the world’s leading expert on criminal psychology with an international reputation to match. Caprini has been studying Travis and looking at the characteristics of his mind which make him a psychopath. Over the years Caprini’s health has deteriorated and Ruby has been covering his decline by taking on more and more of the research herself whilst attributing credit to the Professor.
With the Police wanting to question Travis, Caprini has been invited to join the investigation and share his insight into this character. Can Ruby stand in for the professor and meet the man she has spent her life dreading to see, whilst longing to meet?
During the investigation DI Grants team receive a photo of an ordinary house, but who’s house is it, and what has it got to do with convicted killer Travis?
Can DI Grant and his team find the missing girls from Travis’s killing spree 25 years ago, and uncover the identity of a possible copycat killer?
I really enjoyed reading this can’t put down page turner. The characters are well defined, and I found it easy to connect with each person as we are given an insight into their life inside their day job as well as outside of work. There was enough mystery to the story line to keep me hooked whilst keeping the plot clear and uncomplicated. I also really enjoyed the books first person narrative by the killer which adds to the intrigue and speculation of the story’s outcome.
I've never read anything by this author before so I wasn't sure what this book would be like. It had me hooked from the get go. I really enjoyed how the story unfolded, how the detective team worked their way through the clues and how the personalities of the team were brought to life by the author's writing. I'm very excited to read book 2 and find out how the team develop and solve their next case.
I really enjoyed Killer Motive. This book is suspensful and engaging. It is full of intrigue and adventure. There are so many twists and turns and red herrings that keep you guessing. The book is well written and detailed. I really like the characters. They are interesting. Ruby is wonderful. I can't wait to see what happens in the future in the next book in the series.
A fascinating mystery where many characters have secrets. Travis is a serial killer, but how can a sick, bedridden man be killing again? And who is Ruby Silver, really? So many questions, so many twists and turns. Inspector Grant is on the case.
Twenty five years ago as a young detective DI David Grant was instrumental in the capture and conviction of serial killer Mike Travis, the notorious South Coast Killer, for the murders of five women. He has always believed there were more bodies. Now Travis is dying of cancer and has to be taken to a local hospital for treatment. Grant seizes the opportunity to question him for what may be the last time about the remaining missing women. Whilst Travis is undergoing treatment, a member of the volunteer nursing team is murdered in a copycat of Travis's crimes. To help him solve this murder Grant recruits Ruby Silver, a young specialist criminal profiler who has already undertaken a detailed study of Travis in the past but who is keeping secrets of a past trauma which may affect her judgement. As the copycat strikes again the team struggle to find a link to the past and a motive for these new murders. And time may be running out for those still on the killer's list. A serial killer, great detectives and a criminal profiler in a clever and intriguing plot - this has just about everything I want in a book and I really enjoyed it! It was an exciting story which grabbed and held my attention from start to finish. Some bits of the story were relatively easy to guess and some parts much harder as the author throws a number of red herrings into the lap of the reader until they're not sure what to believe anymore. The main detective characters were well defined and very likable, particularly Grant who is definitely one of life's "good guys". Ruby's character was far more complex and became easier to understand as more was revealed about her past. I am glad to see that this is the start of a series as these characters are far too good to waste on just one book. Highly recommended!
Thank you Ann Girdharry and Voracious Readers for the ARC! I love this book, the first of a long series featuring DI Grant and Ruby Silver I hope... I'll admit that the narrator tricked me once or twice into thinking I knew who the killer was, only to realise I was wrong. It made for a very interesting and gripping story and I can't wait to see what is in store for the protagonists. I am not used to writing reviews, so all I will say is that you need to read it!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Absolutely gripping! This first book about Detective David Grant, his team and profiler Ruby Silver had me turning the pages faster than normal. An excellent, well thought out story with great characters and clever plot lines. I am going really enjoy spending time with these characters and am waiting for the next instalment with bated breath.
I absolutely loved this particularly the police team and how they all got on, or not. I ended up staying up far too late so I could plow through it but didn't want it to end. Ann is such a talented author. You won't be disappointed.
I love physiological thrillers and this is one of the best I have read. The start of the book is powerful and gives an idea what is to come. A nurse volunteers to look after a sick prisoner, Travis, a serial killer. I have read many books that have had me intrigued, thought I can usually guess what’s going to happen, how it’s going to end, well before the last page. This book was different, at no point did I know the ending! As the story unfolds; it made me think ‘Could Travis have committed the crimes?’ ‘Was he superhuman?’ Then after getting into the story I was trying to guess who could be the killer. I thought I had it figured out halfway through the book, I was wrong! All the victims had a story to tell so we got to know them and felt saddened when their fate was sealed. I don’t want to reveal spoilers so I will leave it there. The book was written with chapters split into what was happening and the killers thoughts and deeds, which made me want to race through the book to see who the murderer was, but I didn’t! I loved the interaction between the main characters; Detective Grant and Ruby, also his team. It was natural and believable.
The main aspect of this book that I loved; was the pacing, it is a genuinely thrilling and exciting ride, going full throttle most of the time, but with cleverly placed slower section. The author 'draws' her characters and the storyline held me from the word go, coming to a satisfying conclusion. This combination really does make this book difficult to put down. Twist, turns, murder and psychos! I have never read Ann Girdharry but have now bought ‘The Beauty Killers’ which I am looking forward to reading and following this Author in future.
If this is a first for Grant I can hardly wait for the next instalment. This is a very good book, Grant’s team are very special in that they all look up to Grant and would do anything for him. Highly recommend.
I loved this book, from start to finish. Initially when I read the synopsis, I wasn't entirely sure that this book was for me but I soon got swept up in the story.
The relationship that David Grant had with his team was really nice to read and he sounds like a top man and cop, someone steady, hard working and yet very human as well. Ruby and Soraya's friendship was explained well and Ruby herself really shone in this story. I also enjoyed the bond that David and Ruby started to build up and I am looking forward to reading more about all of these characters in future books. The story of Ruby and Ryan moved me to tears. I won't say what happened there but yeah, all the feels.
I had no clue who the murderer was and there was a fair bit of suspense that kept me hanging on the edge of my Kindle, it has to be said! Travis was a really bad egg and reading about his and Amy's story gave me the chills.
This author is clearly very talented, bring on book two!
Ageing Convicted Psychopath Travis is wheeled in to Hospital for treatment under heavy security for his end stage cancer .DI Grant thinks that this is a good opportunity for making Travis confess and give some information about the missing persons thought to have been murdered by Travis but for lack of concrete evidence he was not convicted for these murders .Travis proves that he has not lost his evil streak despite being weakened by prolonged and terminal illness and does not give any clues and keeps mocking Grant.
All hell breaks loose women start getting killed in the trademark style of Travis – but could Travis really be behind these fresh murders or a copycat murderer was on the prowl.
Ruby Silver, Criminal Psychologist is roped in to help get into the mind of the criminal and solve the cases and catch the murderer. Ann ‘s team of Grant ,Tom and Ruby is really great with Grant having paternal feelings for Ruby and Tom having romantic ones and Ruby having her own demons to slay and past to hide.
I loved reading Ann's Good Gil Bad Girl for its kick ass characters." The Killer Motive" is less dark and more entertaining and makes for a fast paced and riveting read.
Killer Motive is a brilliant start to a new series featuring Detective Grant and Ruby Silver. This is a police procedural with a twist as Ruby's role is not as a detective, but as a criminal psychologist. This gave me greater insight into the case that they were investigating and those who were suspects. I loved the way Ruby is welcomed to the team and begins to fit in with them and I look forward to seeing how her relationships with the team develop in future.
There are some sections of Killer Motive written from the perspective of the killer. I really enjoyed this technique as it helped me to see how twisted the killer really was, and left me on edge as Grant, Ruby and the team struggle to track the killer down.
As Killer Motive reaches its conclusion, there is a definite sense of danger and I was on the edge of my seat hoping the killer would be found. The novel is very fast paced and set my heart racing. I can't wait to see where Girdharry takes these characters next.
A really engaging read. I am a huge fan of criminal behaviour so as the author, Ann Girdharry, is also a trained psychotherapist I was excited to delve into her work feeling confident that her expertise in this area would come through in her writing. I was not disappointed!
When a dying convicted serial killer, Travis, is brought into hospital to manage his end of life cancer treatment, it poses an opportunity to explore some unanswered questions of his historic crimes before it's too late. Two of his victims have never been found and it's Detective David Grant's mission to bring about the truth and closure for the victim's grieving families.
Grant and his team employ the expertise of Criminal Psychologist Ruby Silver to delve deeper into the dark places and develop a fuller profile of this killer. As a nurse is murdered during Travis' treatment Grant and his team are on high alert. Is this sinister character somehow managing to still commit murder even in his frail state or is someone else copying his MO in order to frame him for a new murder.
A well constructed and pacy page turner of secrets and lies, revenge and opportunity. Someone wants Grant to pay but who .... did he make a mistake in the original investigation or did he upset the wrong person.
I would highly recommend this to fans of psychological crime. Girdharry knows how to write believable and enjoyable characters and the inter relationships between them. I felt I was given enough clues throughout to have a guess at the culprit but there were a good few red herrings thrown in too. A very believable outcome and the investigative work was informative and good reading. There is so much more to this book that I just can't get it down - I just urge you to read it!
This is the first book I've read by this author so I can't wait to read book 2 in the series, Deadly Secrets, which is out on 29th June 2020!
I grew to really like Ruby after not being really sure about her in the beginning. From someone who came over as being insecure and self conscious, as the story developed I began to admire her intelligence and tenacity to really go out and achieve her goals. It says an awful lot about her strength of character that she achieved what she did after the trauma of a tormented childhood. I would love another book featuring Ruby, her relationship as it developed with her brother and how her career unfolded. Thanks to the author through TBC for giving me the opportunity to read this amazing book.
I received a copy of this book from TBC Reviewers request- Thank you This is the start of a new series a police procedural with a bit of a twist as well as following the actual Detective (DI Grant) we also meet and follow Ruby Silver a psychologist. I really like the way Ann has woven the characters together throughout the book. A well-written and researched storyline goes a long way to creating a good storyline and Ann has that in spades with this book! A complex read that kept me gripped until the last page- I’ll be looking for the next book in the series Thank you
This is the first novel I have read by this author and what a novel for me to start with!
A fast paced read that is full of suspense and intrigue and kept me turning the pages. The author has weaved a cast of well developed and interesting characters into a story which has you guessing and you think you have all figured out, but then throws you a curve ball. I loved the interaction between the characters and it will be interesting to see how this develops in the following books in the series.
A rollercoaster ride of a novel and I look forward to reading the next!
I have previously read and enjoyed the Kal Medi series by Anne Girdharry, so looked forward to reading a new detective series by her.
In Killer Motive we are introduced to Detective Grant and his team. A criminal profiler, Ruby Silver also joins the team.
The story begins when a nurse is murdered. Twenty-five years previously Grant arrested a man, Travis, who murdered five women. However, Travis is now in prison and receiving treatment for cancer at the same hospital the nurse was murdered. Grant, his team and Ruby must solve the case.
A gripping story with many twists and turns. The book was full of suspense. I thought I had figured out the story, however was very mistaken. I could not have guessed the ending. A great read. I look forward to reading the next in the series.
