Some devised methods of torture cruel beyond belief, some killed members of their own families, others ordered the murders of millions of innocents; some were admired statesmen, some were maniacs - others simply butchers. Vlad Dracul, prince of Wallachia, impaled his enemies on a forest of bloody stakes; the Byzantine empress Irene had her son's eyes gouged out; the Crusaders massacred 70,000 innocent Muslims and Jews when they took Jerusalem; and, the Mongol warlord Tamerlane built pyramids of human skulls. In the 20th century, Adolf Hitler slaughtered 6 million Jews, Josef Stalin liquidated 25 million Russians, while Mao Zedong was responsible for the deaths of 70 million Chinese.

In "101 World Heroes" Simon Sebag Montefiore selected his ultimate heroes and heroines; here he reveals history's dark side."Monsters" presents, in chronological order, compellingly readable portraits of 101 sinister individuals who shared a relish for the brutal exercise of pitiless, unbounded power, a delight in imposing pain and suffering, and a contempt for human life. Many of them - Nero and Al Capone, Genghis Khan and Henry VIII, Lucrezia Borgia and Jack the Ripper, Lenin and Himmler, Charles Manson and Pablo Escobar - are notorious. Others - Byzantine emperor Justinian the Slit-Nose, Pope John XII (who turned the Vatican into a brothel), the 16th century Scots cannibal Sawney Beane, Baron Ungern-Sternberg (who conquered Mongolia in 1920 believing he was Genghis Khan reborn), vampiric Hungarian countess Elizabeth Bathory, Barbarossa the Ottoman pirate-king - are less familiar.

Each biography is accompanied by an article revealing fascinating aspects of those monsters: Sultan Selim the Grim divulges the secret Ottoman methods of royal murder; 'Bloody' Mary evokes the heretic's death at the stake; we travel with Leopold II of Belgium into the 'Heart of Darkness' that was the Belgian Congo; Malawian dictator Dr Banda unveils the strange phenomenon of medical doctors who became murderous tyrants; and, Papa Doc of Haiti reveals the nature of Voodoo.

Lavishly illustrated, interspersed with illuminating quotations, both accessible and informative, "Monsters" is a Who's Who of the cruel and murderous, the rapacious and depraved, and a gripping compendium of stories, characters and indispensable lessons from history that no one should forget - and everyone should know.

"A thrilling work of fiction. Montefiore weaves a tight, satisfying plot, delivering surprises to the last page. Stalin's chilling charisma is brilliantly realised. The novel's theme is Love: family love, youthful romance, adulterous passion. One Night in Winter is full of redemptive love and inner freedom." Evening Standard

"Gripping and cleverly plotted. Doomed love at the heart of a violent society is the heart of Montefiore's One Night in Winter... depicting the Kafkaesque labyrinth into which the victims stumble." The Sunday Times

"Compulsively involving. Our fear for the children keeps up turning the pages... We follow the passions with sympathy... The knot of events tugs at a wide range of emotions rarely experienced outside an intimate tyranny." The Times

"The novel is hugely romantic. His ease with the setting and historical characters is masterly. The book maintains a tense pace. Uniquely terrifying. Heartrending. Engrossing. " The Scotsman

“Delicately plotted and buried within a layered, elliptical narrative, One Night in Winter is also a fidgety page-turner which adroitly weaves a huge cast of characters into an arcane world.” Time Out

“A novel full of passion, conspiracy, hope, despair, suffering and redemption, it transcends boundaries of genre, being at once thriller and political drama, horror and romance. His ability to paint Stalin in such a way to make the reader quake with fire is matched by talent for creating truly heartbreaking characters: the children who find themselves at the centre of a conspiracy, the parents…. A gripping read and must surely be one of the best novels of 2013. NY Journal of Books

"Not just a thumpingly good read, but also essentially a story of human fragility and passions, albeit taking place under the intimidating shadow of a massive Stalinist portico." The National

"Seriously good fun... the Soviet march on Berlin, nightmarish drinking games at Stalin's countryhouse, the magnificence of the Bolshoi, interrogations, snow, sex and exile... lust adultery and romance. Eminently readable and strangely affecting." Sunday Telegraph

" "Hopelessly romantic and hopelessly moving. A mix of lovestory thriller and historical fiction. Engrossing." The Observer

“Gripping. Montefiore’s characters snare our sympathy and we follow them avidly. This intricate at times disturbing, always absorbing novel entertains and disturbs and seethes with moral complexity. Characters real+fictitious ring strikingly true.It is to a large extent Tolstoyan …..” The Australian

Enthralling. Montefiore writes brilliantly about Love - from teenage romance to the grand passion of adultery. Readers of Sebastian Faulks and Hilary Mantel will lap this up. A historical novel that builds into a nail-biting drama … a world that resembles… Edith Wharton with the death penalty.” Novel of

Terrifyingly real...
This book takes you on a journey through the centuries to explore perpetrators of the most heinous crimes of all time. Eye-catching and terribly stunning as these notorious men and women are brought to life in vivid color through woodcarvings, mosaics, paintings and portrait photos. This book starts off every section with a photo of the subject including dates and a small biography.
But this book covers so much more as well. In it you will also find short introductions to things like the Crusades, the Spanish Inquisition, the falls of empires & different conflicts, the Nuremberg trials, the American mafia and much, much more.
This is one of those books that you would not necessarily read through completely in one sitting but instead use it as a reference guide. The book is also equipped with a detailed table of contents in the front and an index in the back to make it easier for you to casually look subjects up as you please.
If you are a lover of history or simply tend to read more on the dark side, like myself, I would definitely recommend adding this book to your library.

With a title like that and a page or two dedicated to hand-picked "demons", there's really no chance of a fair trial here, now is there?

Always superficial with frustrating inaccuracies and typos galore, and if the writers didn't simply get their facts wrong, they are being hopelessly one-sided and sensational (=demonizing). At times it's no better than guess work, really.

But I guess the book works as a good showcase of enduring human stupidity. Because let's face it: there are monsters only because we, you and me, allow it to happen.

1. No man is born evil.
2. True kooks are far and few between (and rarely if ever amount to much).
3. One nation's terrorist is another nation's freedom fighter.
4. Kill a man and you are a murderer. Kill many and you're a conqueror.
5. Q: How to efficiently lie? A: Keep on repeating...

***

Honestly, we can never say for sure what really went down say in 16th century Europe with the likes of Elizabeth Báthory for example. One only has to stop for a moment to reflect about woman's place even in these so-called modern times in order to realize that historically women have always been more or less the property of men who could and would do with them as it best suited them.

So if you happened to be a woman of wealth and therefore of influence, a lot of people, and particularly many men, do not take kindly to a woman who is trying to have her own way about matters that concern everyone else too. It doesn't really take a whole lot of effort, imagination, creativity and scheming to ostracize someone as persona non grata - particularly in an age when almost everyone was illiterate, uneducated and superstitious, to boot.

I imagine an educated and business savvy woman who probably enjoyed showing her influence over men to be of a great source of nuisance to all those who lusted after her wealth and/or her warm bed but who never got beyond second base, if even that. If you can't have her, kill her?

Not saying she wasn't a true bitch, just doubting she ever did what history claims she did.

Nobility or not, the villagers would no doubt have ripped her to pieces had the accusations, let alone evidence proved to be anything more than pure conjecture and personal libel. It's more than little telling that the authorities really only started to act upon the wild rumors after her husband had already died. Ripe for the taking, right? I smell political power games, religious intolerance and more than a dash of misagony all weaved into a nice little package called she-devil who more likely ended in a house arrest rather than walled in a room.

***

I'd very much like to know what exactly would make Charles Manson - a guy who never killed anyone - a monster? Because some other stupid, messed up, and/or borderline crazy hippies took his cryptic ramblings seriously and figured that he'd want them to kill for him for some reason or the other? Manson deserved some jail time, for sure, but a life for crimes he did not even commit?

Or take case Bin Laden. Unarmed, shot in the face in cold blood. Remains dumped at sea less than 24 hours later. By orders of Nobel Peace Prize winner. And basically everyone, UN including, rejoiced.

If you strip away rule of law, you're left with rule of the strong (or more often than not rule of the weak).

When Manson should've finally gotten a chance to get some proper schooling (and proper meds) after the trials in 1971, he instead was locked up for life simply because he essentially gave the media and the American populace what they had wanted to see all along: the chance to see the devil himself. And everyone knows you can never let a devil out because if you do, everyone would see that the devil's just a man after all. Nothing more and nothing less.

More accurate book title would be: "Monsters - and the ordinary folks who really make the magic happen." Or: "Monsters (because you were still at it when your enemies took a day off!)"

I find it difficult to write a review which lists the 101 most sadistic, megalomaniac and brutal people who walked the face of the earth. The book starts from ancient times and continues straight through modern time. So, I am just going to feature a few of the more interesting and add a bit of the very informative extra’s the author gives us.

The most brilliant:

Hassan-i-Sabbah. Hasson created a group called “hashishim’” to kill Sunni’s and enemies of Islam in the mountains of modern day Iran. To gain loyal followers he invented the most ingenious method. He constructed a luscious garden palace filled it with honey, wine and beautiful Persian women. He would then travel, befriend and drug (most likely with Hashish) unsuspecting men. When they passed out he would drag them to his gardens. When they awoke they were treated to all the amenities of the garden. After a day of pleasure induction they were drugged again. Then they were taken to Hassin’s Castle. When they awoke at the Hassin’s castle, Hassin would gain their allegiance by offering them entry to gardens only if they obeyed his wishes. This trick worked like a charm. He successfully ordered numerous murders and his followers were responsible for coining the moniker “assassin.”

The most cartoonish name:

Basil the Bulgar Slayer

Basil, Byzantine emperor, was anything but cartoonish however. After defeating the Bulgarians in the year 1014, he lined up the prisoners and had them blinded, leaving one eye per 100 men so they could be led home.

The craziest:

Shaka, Zulu king 1781-1828, who on learning of his mother’s death had 7000 of his own tribesmen, including pregnant women and children, slaughtered.

The most dashing:

Enver Hoxha. He was a tall, smiling well dressed Albanian ruler from 1944 to 1985 who used his secret police to torture more than 100,000 citizens and imprison 1 million more.

20th Century massacre:

The Tolat Pasha, Ottoman, sultan ordered the execution of 250 Armenians in 1915.

Some of the additional information is fascinating:

1. Strange Royal Deaths

a. Herod Agrippa of Judea who was consumed by worms in AD 44.
b. Alexander III of Scotland rode off a cliff when rushing home in 1286.
c. Nanda Bayin of Burma laughed herself to death in 1599.

2. Kings who died in Battle

a. Saul, the first king of Israel, died in the Battle of Mount Gilboa.
b. Valens, Roman Emperor, killed in battle with the Goths in 378.
c. Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden killed at the Battle of Lutzen.

3. Royal Epithets

a. Those entitled “The Great” include Herod (Jerusalem), Alexander (Macedonia), Peter and Catherine (Russia), Frederick (Germany).

b. Odd names include Ethelred the Unready of England (968-1016); Boleslaw the Curly of Poland (1120-1173); Henry the Fowler of Germany (876-936); Bayezid the Thunderbolt Ottoman sultan (1360-1403); Ivan the Moneybag of Russia 1288-1340.

4. Conspiracy Theories

a. The Protocols of the Elders of Zion which the Jewish attempt to conquer the world was actually a forged document from a fiction novel. However, it is the main source used to justify anti-Semitism.

You would think that by the last half of the 20th Century oppression by rulers would have subsided but that does not seem to be the case. I feel very fortunate living in the USA because we own none of the 101 History Monsters.

I read 133 pages but his writing style is not for me. It is just so hard to read one page and understand what he means that I find reading boring and not fun.

There are just so many people described and things that happened that I've never heard of and wanted to read about but he makes it boring I don't know how. I love history of any kind but this one is boring AF.

Gonna give up on this one and move on to books I will like more.

A generally interesting book, however some of those considered ‘monstrous’ are far from so and are mealy victims of unjustly accordance. Such as that of ‘jezebel’ who despite her reputation as a whore, was in fact a phoecian princess who married the Jewish king of the time and rather then adopt his religion maintained her own, continuing to worship it and promote it. Something far from monstrous of the time standards or even that of modern standards.

=>Străiniile morți ale regilor
=>Monarhi care și-au ucis soțiile și copiii
=>Metode de tortură din diferite perioade
=>Criminali în serie
=>Tirani și Dictatori
=>Mafioți
=>Teroriști...

Recomand!

This book was a waste of time. I expected more from a book titled "monsters". No serial killers were mentioned {except for a total of 2 pages with a list of serial killers and no details) and most of the people mentioned, don't seem like monsters to me. Going to war to fight for your kingdom, doesn't make you a monster. And being a strict ruler doesn't make you a monster either.

As bargain bin books go, this wasn’t too bad. It’s an ambitious task creating a brief encyclopedia of some of the worst people to ever walk the face of the earth. Almost by definition the collection is uneven. Genocidal heads of state share space with some profoundly garden-variety murderers. Still, for the most part I enjoyed the reading experience (to the extent it’s possible to enjoy reading about such matters).

A very good book,a chronological reference of the most abhorrent people In history, most of these an inferiority complex and no moral compass, this enhanced by lack of maternal or paternal guidance.not a present read when as to quote stalin one death is tragedy thousands a statistic.many names I had not heard of,but this book has enlightened me more to mans inhumanity to man.as another quote says those ignore history are doomed to repeat it.

What an abominable collection of infamous names: Jezebel, Nebukadnezar, tyrants and dictators, crusaders, Asian Warlords, Tamerlane, modern serial killers, Vlad the Impaler, Savonarola, Henry VII, Noriega, von Trotha, Lenin, genocide, Hitler, Franco, Mao Zedong, Beria, Nazi criminals, Duvalier, Stroessner, Amin, Jim Jones, Manson, Saddam Hussein, Escobar, bin Laden... will that endless row of monsters ever end? History has proven no so far. Let's hope for a better future. Highly recommended!

It was ok but after a while I started to feel some kind of sensation in the biographies. It also got a little bit boring after a long while because it starts to feel the same. Difficult to read in a few days (it took me more than a year) because it's so monotonous, not something to read 'just for fun'. It's difficult to explain but I couldn't read it for many pages at once.

This book is well researched, but it also got very repetitive. I think it would have been better if there were fewer monsters, with only the more memorable included. For example, there were multiple Nazis with profiles, their crimes, though horrendous, felt like repetitive facts. They could have been grouped together. The side notes and extra/bonus facts after each monster were probably my favorite. If you love history and like learning bits and pieces, this book is great for that. You can pick it up and put it down as you go without feeling like you're losing a story or something. We actually paced ourselves through this and found that it was better to try and retain more of the information we were learning.

Excellent little summaries of some of the foulest men and women to grace this earth. Quite the most depressing book to read all in one go. And as it's from 2008 it's interesting to read it knowing what happened to some of them since then.
