The Demon King Order harvests lives from all manners of living beings.
Within this darkness full of despair, A single person escaped from space-time, returned to before the world collapsed, determined to change the fate of the past.
But as time pass, he gradually finds out that the Apocalypse isn’t quite as simple as he thinks…
Astonishingly good. Props to the translator for doing a great job.
Worlds' Apocalypse Online is a captivating combination of two entirely different genres of fiction that meld to work in harmony.
The main character is a man of two worlds, a Cultivation world and a Science Fiction Mecha world. Returning to the past after the apocalypse, He is both a Scientist and a Swordsman, while maintaining a hobby as a Chef to keep himself grounded. The Cultivation world is initially presented as a game that is more than a game, but that trope is quickly subverted as the time line quickly spirals out of control as the main character alters the course of history.
And that marks the hall mark of this series. Expectation subversion. Every time I thought I had a handle on where this novel was going, things took a dramatic turn. It always makes sense too and it continues on in this manner for thousands of chapters without a dull moment, as the stage and stakes constantly raise. The main character's ability to rationally analyze and proceed against all odds is an absolute treat to watch.
Is he OP? Yes, he gets god-level abilities repeatedly throughout the series, but he's always fighting some foe that is 4+++ levels higher than he is and part of the show is seeing him use his God level equipment and skills intelligently to overcome absolutely heaven defying odds. It's lovely.
Is there a Harem? Yes, but this doesn't really play into the story much. The MC is still a virgin at Chapter 1000, and this is frequently played for comedy as someone so calm fighting an army of foes is paralyzed with indecision trying to figure out how to handle a girl's interest.
Is there comedy? Yes! Lots of laugh out loud parts. It's very clever and the action is broken up by situational comedy frequently.
Is there a good world to explore? Yes! one of the best parts of WAO is the absolute plethora of imagined realms and places to visit. This is one of my favorite aspects of reading fiction, and this novel delivers in this respect.
Overall I fully recommend. It's a bit all over the place sometimes, but the spectacle and sheer velocity of imagination on display makes this a 5/5 experience.
the criticisms given by the three star review are valid, insofar as CN's of this style benefit from continually escalating things and never resolving things- but having read to the latest chapter (start of 'volume 4-5'/chapter 2200 ish), this series now joins the exclusive VIP club of 'CNs that have good endings'.
If I give this series any criticism, it's that the fight scenes are shit. The MC is always fighting enemies way beyond or way below his power level, so either he's one-shotting mooks like no tomorrow, or he's arranging everything for a perfect assassination one-shot- and then the fight is over or it isn't.
In the entire story there was only one fight scene I actually felt motivated to turn on theme music for: the final fight. It was actually well choreographed, didn't end in a moment, and didn't feature long periods of both sides standing around talking about their techniques. Honestly, having read to that point I felt well rewarded for it, because it made up for all the previous high tension fights before.
The ending is still ongoing, and because it's a serial there's the hint for more on the horizon. But what I've seen so far has been great, resolution of many threads, finally addressing the potential romance. Finally settling with no major threat actively raining down shit on everything.
Overall, I'd recommend this story because it is quite good. There's also a comic, now, if that's more to your pace.
The previous review still stands for the beginning. Although this book is entertaining, the biggest flaws are the countless cliffhangers and contrived suspense. The author will drop entire plotlines for hundreds of chapters by randomly 'manipulating the time flow in a different world. Sudden Deus ex machina events are the primary plot stoppers/pushers. It gets annoying, especially since the author already had a proper time difference mapped out. Pausing major plot elements for the newest 'world ending' events are really only the author inserting mildly plot relevant filler arcs. Doing this for hundreds of chapters made me consider dropping this more than once.
The harem in this book is almost worse. It only serves as only a detriment to character development and plot. There isn't any actual romance or relationships despite multiple parties being deeply interested in each other. The main reason for the harem is to promote weak romantic suspense and to praise the MC. Additionally the protagonists cautious nature becomes very passive and weak willed whenever potential love interests are around. The author portrays these women as highly emotional and irrational as well as violent (an: but it's okay because their girls!). The protagonist responds by treating them as the typical hysterical female stereotype and does whatever they want regardless of the seriousness of the situation (as a sidenote, every single one of the protagonist allies also responds to potential female displeasure with extreme fear and/or submisson regardless of the status or power level for either party). This all serves another tool for the author to use as meaningless filler.
The protagonist started out okay but as the author grablvitated more and more towards his over utilization of deus ex machina and plot armor it's gotten worse. The mc is so full of game breaking cheats that even a being slightly proactive, let alone min maxing, and quick learning supporting skills would make hm easily able to achieve his goals. Instead he just does some sword stuff, stabs some people, gets better (but mostly irrelevant) sword stuff and stabs more people. Sometimes he actually remembers the system he has and learns useful techniques. Mostly he risks his life on low probability to survive situations and gets through it with plot armor. His cheat being so overpowered (although prone to nonsense contrived and impossibe to happen to the mc because he's the mc failure penalities) and so the protagonist can use without being too godly. Thus the protagonist forgets to accumulate knowledge and power. That's the author biggest failure. If he had made a realistic reward/penalty system will well thought out restrictions this book would be much more enjoyable and the protagonist wouldn't lost so many braincells along the way.
This story really shouldn't be over 2000 chapters long, I highly doubt I'll even make it to the 1000 before dropping it.
I'm dropping it here. There are too many issues with the characters and plot and there are mo signs of them getting better. Also, I was pushing through these hundreds of chapters of filler to get back to the intriguing main plotline. Unfortunately, the author wiped away all of the protagonists preparations. He spent time to find out how to exactly act as the evil sect masters son. He became a godly actor and studied so much information on the person he's impersonating. Now, he apparently forgot all of that and needs coaching by two random people in order to properly prepare for the role. He is also too afraid of women to play the part of a womanizer. Finally, he spontaneously introduced an unstable element (another actor who can't act and plays the part of man despite being female) to the plan because he apparently needs it despite not needing prior to even knowing the person or techniques used to add this additional actor. The author loves to disregard logic and consistency for drama and filler. I'm done with this now.
Dropped Ch: 431
I really enjoyed this. It’s a similar style as Rebirth the thief who roamed the world, but with less pointless interactions.
