Rate this book

Admitted to the École Normale Supérieure in 1933, and receiving a third in the "Agrégation des lettres" in 1935, he was member of the French School at Rome (1935-1937) then taught Latin at a Rennes lycée. Then he was active as a professor of Roman civilization at the faculties of Caen and Bordeaux, and finally at the Sorbonne for thirty years.
He published studies on the Roman civilization, of which many volumes to the "Que sais-je?" series, and translations of Latin classical authors (Cicero, Seneca the Younger, Tacitus, Plautus, Terence). On his retirement, he also published biographies and fictionalized histories (Mémoires d’Agrippine, le procès Néron), more intended for the general public.
At the end of his life, he campaigned for the safeguarding of literary teaching.

Mythology has been with us for a long time.

Myth is inherent in every culture and people on Earth. Mythology is a form of truth that has lasted from antiquity. It has endured because it has been an oral tradition. Cultures from all parts of the Earth that had no contact, had similar mythological stories because stories were introduced and discarded, retaining core truths.
A book I read years ago explained this well. 'He Who Hunted Birds in His Father's Village: The Dimensions of the Haida Myth', by Gary Snyder.

The Penguin Dictionary of Classical Mythology is a comprehensive handy reference book.

I loved this, such a great way to tell stories about Greek mythology by using dictionary definitions, I worked my way through slowly and learnt some new words and more information on some myths !

Although most of the myths are Greek and Roman, I enjoyed it, it was practical to have a copy if you love ancient myths like I do. Thanks to my aunt for giving me a copy of it.

Awesome dictionary, but it lacked some things that I’ve been wondering myself and had to go to the web to find it.

It was an okay book. I mean, it's basically a dictionary/encyclopedia, so it's not the most engaging read when you're reading it straight through. It's informative, so that's good.

One thing that got me, though, was that there were lots of confusing sentences, either because of the wording or punctuation, like commas in strange places or no commas where I was expecting them.

I also didn't love some of the cross-referencing, or lack of it. There might be entries that referred to a person with an alternative name, but if you looked up that alternative name, in some cases there was nothing to refer you back to the first version of the name. For example, if there were a person Bob, also known as John, as named by Mythographer X: in some cases, you could look up both Bob and John and get *some* sort of information (either the full story, or a cross reference to the other name); in other cases, though, you could look up Bob and see the story there, but there'd be nothing under John to tell you to go look up Bob.
