Bones is a treasure of a poetry book, a journey of discovery, recovery and profound awareness.
Packed with wisdom gained during recovery from deep loss, and a sprinkling of whimsical words, it follows a definite sequence, like the vertebrae of Voski's spine.
Opened at random, each poem can be read, enjoyed and pondered alone. However, when read in succession, a quest of realisation and enlightenment will open before you.
Voski's love of beautiful words and phrasing shines through, in this delightful fit-in-your-pocket jewel.
Janette Voski was born in Sydney, Australia, and is of Armenian and Lebanese descent.
Voski began her writing journey in 2014, with poetry being her preferred art of self-expression. In Voski's writing, her love of literature shines through with expression through her influences: dialogue, people, places, relationships, experiences and memories.
Voski has published four poetry books: Bones (2019), X (2020), Neon Sun (2022) and Chrome (2023).
Across all Voski's publications, she details her personal experiences with passion and a boldness to look deeply into the variables that make up the evolution unfolding before her.
To love. To empathise. To show compassion. To be vulnerable. To prevail in strength. These are the themes Voski brings to life and literature, guaranteed to resonate with those who have loved and lost, and found themselves along the way.
Janette Voski writes with complete vulnerability. She opens her heart and bares it all. Nothing to hide, no stone left unturned. She explores every facet of her wounds and lets you heal through her words.
Every chapter, Janette discovers something new about herself, and in turn, so does the reader. She takes you on a journey through heartbreak, pain, discovery, reflection, and acceptance.
She tackles her emotions head on, and I think that’s what I admire most about this book.
There’s a famous phrase that says, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me.” In this book, every chapter is a different “stick” or “stone” that breaks her bones, but her words heal her. Her words set her free. “Bones” is simply a coming of age story, but it’s a coming of age story of the heart — a heart that is stronger now more than ever before.
I could feel everything, it was like i was in her shoes. All the pain, the anguish, the longing, the emptiness. I felt it all. The words cut deep. It was as if my heart was spilled over all over the pages, saying what I felt and the words I could not find and could not speak and It helped me realized that it’s okay to feel the way I feel. It made me feel a little less alone in world. Totally would recommend! WORTH THE READ!
Bones is as authentic as it gets, stripped bare down to the bone. It takes a lot of courage to be this open and honest. This book is for anyone who ponders life, for those who feel their emotions and embrace their sensitivities. A thought provoking journey through the grief of loss and heartbreak. Bones does not hide the darkness, it embraces it. Incredibly haunting is ‘winter’ which was a personal favourite of mine as I have felt this many times before. My favourite part about bones is how each page can be enjoyed separately but the journey from film to film is why I couldn’t put it down.
The bravest thing an individual can possibly do is open their chest and expose their very insides to be viewed and critiqued by friends, family and strangers.
Voski has very clearly poured every piece of herself into this book, the emotion in its pages is so raw, relatable, and palpable. Few times in my life have I been moved to tears whilst reading a book, and the skilful writing and imagery used in “bones” flooded my eyes with emotion several times.
“Bones” is a story, a journey, a roller coaster. Within its pages you will find the story of Voski’s heartbreak, her journey to rebuild in the wake of such trauma. However the most fantastic thing about “Bones”, is that it could very easily be the story of your own heart, after its own breaking, if it had the ability to express itself on paper.
