Don't mind him, he’s a little cranky from not being allowed to pee on strigòns’s pants. Now, where was I…? Ah yes! What do you do when an army of otherworldly, fanged warriors called strigòns enter your city from another dimension? Naturally, you hate them, insult them, play with your life in their vicinity… then join them in their quest of saving both our worlds. You didn’t see that coming, did you? Neither did us, but still we put our gear on, my furry, slimy friend and I, and trudged on into an adventure of our lifetimes. I’m imagining myself as Lara Croft here: hair swinging as I snap my bow to bring down any enemy I find in my way. Sorry about that, I get carried away sometimes. Anyway…
At the dawn of humanity, will this group of unlikely allies save what’s left of our post-apocalyptic worlds? Rests to be seen.
XEN LIVES WITH HER husband and their poodle in a historically-rich little city on the coast of Croatia, Pula. She grew up reading all kinds of stories and genres; from thrillers and horrors, sci-fi and crime, to urban fantasy and paranormal romance. She draws inspiration from all of them, and meshes it with local lore and mythology to create new, compelling stories you cannot just push into any specific genre. From the moment she tentatively trudged through her first books and fell in love with the fantastic worlds hidden among the ink-stained pages, she knew reading would become her salvation. But reading wasn’t enough. The pull of the stories bubbling inside of her was too great to ignore, and despite her conviction that she wasn’t a good writer, eventually, the pull won. She started writing short stories while playing literary role-playing games with her fellow reader friends, and soon, it became evident that it wouldn’t be enough.
Xen Randell: Pen name for Urban Fantasy, Science Fiction and Paranormal Romance genre.
This was one of the bestest, most original, unique, unusual, incredibly well researched and written stories I have ever read. This book called to me to the point that I was desperate to read it, and once I had it, the book kidnapped me and wouldn't let me sleep. I devoured it in one go and loved every moment of it. When I was done, all I could say was: Wow! What a book! This a completely new author, and I can proudly say I've read this book before it came out! This author is such a great discovery I will be patting myself on the back for years to come. First of all, the author's writing is absolutely amazing, starting with the gripping writing style, beautiful consistency of every single piece of information, to having covered every single loose end. From the author's use of lyrics from various songs, to the flashbacks from the main character's diary, the story was spun and told to perfection. The characters are beautifully developed, realistic and human with all of their flaws. The world is set in the postapocalyptic Europe, but there is more. There are human like creatures who came and stayed, and became a huge part of the story. The relationships between characters are complex as is the world around them. Alex is the main character, and she is a survivor. There are numerous other characters in the story, and I love some of them dearly, but I have a feeling that talking about them would be a major spoiler, so I'll let you find out yourself. But I have to warn you, this is not a romance. There might be some flirting, but the focus is on the world, not romance. One of the things that strikes me most about this story is the amount of research the author put into every single detail. The locations, events, science, legends, everything! Every single thing in this book is researched to the max. Then there are parts of the story that are so beautifully poetic and heartbreaking. I love everything about this book. Absolutely everything. The ending is open, it is pretty shocking, but it's not a cliffhanger in a usual sense. Still, it was one of the most epic endings in history of endings. This will forever remain one of my favourite books of all times and I could not be happier for discovering this author. The story continues in Decidedly Human (The Wave of Silence 2).
When you have read as many books as I have, a debut novel is always one that has the potential to be interesting, with an entirely new author's voice at the reader's disposal. Xen Randell has the potential to be the very best of this kind of new author, armed with raw, uncompromising prose, compelling characters and crucially, the ability to 'world-build' that is often hinted at in other debut novels but are rarely fully realised.
The Wave of Silence is a well written book that really does put you into this most dystopian of worlds. The scary thing for us humans, as well as the characters in this book, is when the dystopian setting almost becomes normal for us.
That is the problem facing Alex. She is a tough heroine, which is nothing new, but she is at her strongest because of how she reacts to the world she finds herself in. There is strong interplay between herself and the other characters. She is able to stay positive and charming despite the incredible odds at merely surviving day to day. I really like Einstein, her amiable dog and companion, with strong characterisations of the likes of Dmitar and Laszlo.
This is not a young adult read, more like MG to adult. There is strong swearing which is fine in context, but maybe knocks the reader out of a sentence more than once. It doesn't detract from the main star in this book, which is the plot, but I noticed this trend of new authors who use more profanity, violence or sexual scenes when really 'less truly is more.' It is an observation, definitely not a criticism.
In Sci-Fi, the main problem I have is that I cannot possibly imagine what these aliens are like, and it is up to the author to make them resonate with me. Here, I believe author Xen Randell is very credible, because you will have intimate knowledge of what a Strigon is when reading this book, not after you put it down.
However, it is Alex who we can relate to most. She is the readers eyes in the book, even though it is written in third person I could see this totally working in a first person narrative.
The cover is striking and encouraged me to take a plunge into this author's world. The Kindle version is extremely well formatted and as for the story itself, it is complete in its own right however ends in such a way that you will want to read Book Two, which is out in May 2020 I believe.
A thrill a minute ride for all sci-fi / dystopian fans.
I really enjoyed Xen’s first book. She is a great writer. I was gripped by the original plot straight away. The characters drew me into their story that I couldn’t put this book down. I can’t wait for you to meet my favourite character Einstein, I think you’ll love him! Waiting on tender hooks for the next one.
Well that is NOT how I pictured that ending! I had to sleep on it after I finished this story late last night because I didn't want to give spoilers... nay nay, you have to get your copy and see just why I am so … what the... ahhhhh! Ok, so Alex is the human girl who the story takes place about, however we all know Einstein, yes the dog, is the real star of the story. He is so intelligent and such a well thought out character in his own right. I love the dynamic between the two of them! Alex's witty internal dialogue will have readers laughing and at times tearing up throughout the entire novel. I was pulled in by her sarcasm and captivated by the internal strength that she projects in even the most dire of times However Einstein isn't the only side character that readers will fall in love with. Riva, the sassy and a little intimidating Strigon is another. she is a great addition to the little band of misfits out to save the world. Now, lets talk guys shall we? UGH! Dmitar!! drove me crazy, do we like him or not? well, that is the question and I cant answer it because... spoilers! Bana has his own set of secrets and the fall out from them... cue the anticipation... The ever handsome and charming Laszlo is something else as well! In the end Goor is my choice! I have a weak spot for the strong silent types that are kill and then ask questions! Over all this is am amazing and wonderfully written introduction to a world lost. I am in awe of this author's debut! She really is something to watch out for! I can't wait to dive deeper into this world and learn more about each of these characters! Make sure you grab a copy as soon as you can!
Xen I loved your book well done. I usually don't like books that keep going into the past but the story is compelling and very easy to read🤗looking forward to the next in the series
I'm very ambivalent about this book - this is a debut novel and I don't want to ruin it for the author, but the raving reviews seem a little over the top. The concept of the book is very interesting. A post apocalyptic earth which was invaded by various creatures that among them were beings that apparently came from a different world or dimension, that once used to be earth. The main protagonist and a group of these beings are on a mission to save both planets from destruction. The thing is, it started out great but the writing quality was not consistent. Some parts seemed like they were written by a mature author , whereas some by or for YA. in addition, I think the writer is not a native English speaker and occasionally used the wrong words describing things such as "talking silently" instead of quietly, Which drove me crazy... Proofreading needed. No idea why the author chose to use foul language all the time as I couldn't see where it contributed to the story. All in all, I managed to read up to 70% and just gave up.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Nope. I really tried to like this, I tried to finish it, yet the H really p***** me off to no end. At first I thought we had a strong fighter, but honestly without her dog she's pretty much couldn't do s***, our H is freaking ignorant fool, her hate for these other beings is so crazy misplaced its borderline disturbing. She just wants to hate then pretty much and she's ok with being that way. Even after being helped she is so rude and ignorant I couldn't believe it. And as one of these beings talks about a human kid being hurt, molested and killed in front of him, and this H wants to know why he cares or is bothered since humans and them don't get along, it was a sick turning point. She doesn't get upset what happened, She's just is pretty much embarrassed with her ppl? I'm really surprised at the high star ratings
Hey people! If you're looking for something new to read, like SF, like postapocalyptic times, extraordinary powers, and a bit of sexual tension, look no further! Wave of silence has it all! And the best part is... It's not predictable! Believe me, I did not see that end coming! This book had me hooked from the Epilouge, wich may I add I never, ever read. The main character has strong traits and survival drive, and for a change, a girl is not whining! 2 kick ass girls in 1 book?! Hell yeah! No damsels in the stress, they hold their own. I enjoyed reading this book so much, and can't wait for the sequal.
I was up all night because I couldn't put it down, my colleagues were not happy with me the next day 😂 Now seriously, I need more stars, five are not enough for this awesome read. It got me hooked from first page and I still can't believe that ending, wow... I didn't see that one coming. Don't get me wrong, I loved it!! And now I can't wait for the next book. Personally, I love plot twists and even more when authors surprise me with their turns and twists and Miss Randell did it, not just in the end but through the whole book!! Thank you for this awesome book ❤
OMG, This is such an amazing read that once you start you will not be able to put it down. This book makes you feel as though you are right there with Alex and Einstein and experiencing the new world with them. The story is amazing and it will take you away to another reality. The characters are so real you feel as though you know them personally and no matter what you want to see them overcome everything in their way. This is a must read, you will not be sorry that you did. I cannot wait to read more from this amazing author.
The wave of silence. This is the first book I've read by this author. Xen randell is a new author to me. This book is different from what I normally read. I love the characters Alex the best. She a human girl. The twists and turns in this book will have you at the edge of your set. Cant wait to read more by her.
I was lucky enough to be able to read this amazing book before it was even finished. I instantly fell in love with the characters. The plot is amazing and made my inner sci-fi freak squeeeeeeeee with excitement!!! You will not be disappointed by this book. One of my favourites in a very long time!!!
I freely admit that I chose to read this book entirely for the dog on the cover. So, I didn't go into it with high expectations. Which is good, because I'd have been disappointed. I think pedestrian and not particularly well edited is the kindest way to describe it.
The book sets up an interesting premise and world and then goes about completely not utilizing it. The whole book is basically traveling to the important thing they're supposed to do, as opposed to the actual thing, completion or prevention of the things, and/or the fall-out of the thing. I was frankly bored for most of it. Which meant I had nothing to distract me from the messy editing and sometimes impenetrable writing. Like this, for example, "Soft susurrus of the more persistent leaves concerted with the melancholic whine of the late autumn wind kissing naked tree branches." Do you know how long it took me to figure out the wind was blowing through the trees?
Add to all that the predictability, deus ex machina saves, and the way everyone lusted over the rather lack-luster heroine and I was just plain not having a good time, my dude. Glad to be done with it.
The Wave of Silence is book one by Xen Randell in the The Wave of Silence series. When a science experiment goes wrong, it causes chaos and destruction, and to have Strigons, a savage race, populate Earth. Alex found herself alone and fighting for survival, decided to fight back, and with her dog, Einstein saved Earth and the Strigons worlds. The readers of The Wave of Silence will continue to follow Alex and Einstein to discover what happens.
The Wave of Silence is the first book I have read by Xen Randell, and I enjoy it. The Wave of Silences is Xen Randell's first book. I do not normally engage with stories that talk in the first person ever, but I did engage with this book's plot and characters. I love Xen Randell's portrayal of her characters and their interaction with each other throughout this book. The Wave of Silence is well-written and researched by Xen Randell. I like Xen Randell's description of The Wave of Silence settings, which complements the book's plot.
This has potential to be 5 stars. A 5 star review from me means: I love it and want to reread it every year. I’m giving this a 4.5.
This is the first new series (by a new author) that I’ve read in a while that I really got in to. I wanted to know what would happen next! I stayed up late and drank too much wine because I HAD to finish it.
There’s a little bit of a love triangle... actually more of a quadrilateral. There are 3 people vying for our heroine’s affections. It was tastefully done. The romance aspect was more of a side note, it didn’t dominate the story which I really liked. There is no “insta love” even if there was an insta-attraction.
Plenty of action... and our heroine doesn’t start off all powerful. She’s actually pretty normal and relatable. The side characters and their dynamics were interesting and often times funny.
All in all I’d say a great read. Why not 5 stars? Just a personal pet peeve: I don’t like when the MC gets knocked out or loses consciousness often to move the story along. I think once a book is enough. I can’t remember how many times that happened in this book. (For two reasons: 1 - I was drinking and reading and 2 - I read the 2nd book immediately after and can’t remember if it was a lot because it was two stories back to back?) once I reread it (when the next book comes out) I’ll reevaluate and update my review.
I’ve already read the 2nd book and I’m anxiously awaiting the 3rd!
This was so damn good!! I love a book that doesn’t info dump, it’s a pet peeve of mine. The author allows tidbits of information to fall naturally, giving us snippets here and there until we have the complete picture. I love an apocalyptic/ dystopian style story and this delivered in so many ways. There were a few WTF moments and not even going to lie... yes I had to look up a couple of words, while not a huge problem, did stop the momentum a little. Seems the author ate a thesaurus at one point lol While this book sets up the world and characters it winds up rather quickly, which is slightly disappointing.
I thought the world building was fantastic and the dialogue between characters engaging and interesting. All of them with clear personalities that make them relatable.
Alex and Einstein are such a great pairing and I love the interactions between them throughout.
The pacing throughout kept you reading and reluctant to put it down through need to know what happened next.
I had high hopes starting this book, and I was not disappointed.
Great story, I loved world the author had created !!
Alex is a badass, I really like her and her dog Einstein, together they're a really great team !! She doesn't hesitate to open her mouth, even if sometimes she should be more careful with it, but she's true to herself. I won't give any other names not to give any spoilers and let people the opportunity to discover the book by themselves, but I have a crush on the main male character !! He's very protective of Alex. I was stunned, with the end of the book, my reaction had been :" OMG What the heck is happening?"
I really love this world that Xen showed in this book. The story is set after our time, post apocalypse, and Xen has mamanged to give vampires a new reason for coming in our world. I found this book funny and well paced, lots of action to keep on edge. There's a bit of romance and I love what she has done there. I loved E. and Bana but can't wait to see what happens in the next book.
Not my normal type of book but boy did it pull me in. Loved the characters esp. Einstein. Well written and full of enough description that you could picture the scenes perfectly. Thankyou Xen for an amazing start to the story
