Hated.
Hunted.
Hooded.

In a land of myths and monsters, 17-year-old Carlette is a slave. Her power of enhabitation, the ability to control animals, makes her useful to the island’s colonial rulers. Convinced she’s on the right side, she spends her life doing their bidding, awaiting the day she gets to leave it all behind and fulfill her purpose in their war across the sea.

But when an escaped spy forces her to leave the safety of the road, Carlette is plunged into the wilderness with a handsome enemy by her side, rebels at her back, and only her wits to guide her. Among the giant trees of the magical forest, Carlette will begin to realize her world is much more complicated than she’s been led to believe.

Will she learn to see through the lies she was raised on? Will she have the courage to choose heart over duty?

And will she do it fast enough to save everyone she loves?

A. A. Woods is a Boston-based Hispanic author of science fiction and fantasy. After a childhood in Montana and a few exciting years in Costa Rica, her family finally settled in the northeast to escape the sun. There, she went to the University of Vermont for a degree in Molecular Genetics, which has been useful for terrifying the hypochondriacs in her life. She's traveled to over 20 countries, been struck by lightning, and worked in a morgue, which could explain a lot.

With 13 completed novels and dozens of short stories on her hard drive, she figured her manuscripts weren't doing any good gathering virtual dust. So stay tuned, because there's lots more coming.

What I liked:
- Carlette and Tuk
- The second half of the book>>>
- Little Red Riding Hood vibes
- Fast paced, and exciting
- The aesthetic

What I didn’t like:
- Too much swearing
- Over-descriptive
- Confusing vocabulary (there is a dictionary at the back, but I didn’t want to take the time to look up every word I didn’t know)
- Byrna, and a few other characters

I really enjoyed this book! The magic system is really cool and I was enchanted by many of the interesting beasts that inhabit Ferren. There was a lot of great world building that left me excited to read the next book.

Overall enjoyed the story. It was kind of like a loose red riding hood mixed with a little shifter romance without the shifting mixed into an expansive fantasy world. There were a few small parts I skimmed to get to the next beat, but nothing that made me put the book down.

LOVED IT!
This is the beginning of a great epic fantasy series! Enjoyed every minute of it, can't wait for more. Highly imaginative and action packed. The only thing I would have liked added, is a legend giving name pronunciation and better descriptions of the animal/creatures in the story.

2.75 Usually I finish such a book in 1 day but it was difficult read. I found sometimes hard to continue. Cannot pinpoint what it was really. The world building is great but I found sometimes that the story is stuck even if there are some actions. I may not continue if B2 ever comes out…

An excellent start to a fantasy series, kept me entertained with some interesting characters.
Loyalties seem to be flexible for some but it appears peace rather than war is the key goal.
Some great world-building imagery which makes the background easy to discern with ones own imagination.
