Two young men travel to another town to participate in a footrace. They loved to train and to race; that was their pastime and their principal topic of conversation.

This short story, considered a masterpiece by anthology editors, is about young men and young woman who stumble into a small adventure on a bank holiday in a seaside garrison town.

Why did he do what he did?. This question could provoke much animated discussion about these characters, and prompt a deep dive into the small lingering mysteries of life.

This may be the first thing I've ever read from A.E. Coppard (1878-1957)
