ISABELLE'S FIRST SIN: The Story of a Case of Incest

Rate this book
On the scandalous events, which took place in the mid-15th century in the domains of the Count of Armagnac.
…She was La Bella. Even worse, Dangereuse. She excited flesh and ruined souls in the blink of an eye. Or was it him ruining her? Who cared now, everything had lost its meaning. There was only her, white-skinned, green-eyed, with poison on her lips and bitterness in her blood. He took her in his arms. She was so tiny, so slender, with such thin, translucent fingers that would bruise from his kisses alone. She was la mia costa. His own rib. The sin united them wickedly in its sweet bitterness, in bittersweetness. La Bella was bitter, Dangereuse was sweet, and he was insane. It would be so a thousand times until hell swallowed them. Who knows, their sin could be so great that even in hell there would be no place for them…

Mid-15th Century. Lectoure, Gers department, Occitanie region SW, France. Isabeau “Isabelle” d’Armagnac (16) had been accused of perjury & incest.
Joan of Foix was about to pop a child.
It was tradition the Counts of Armagnac married their female cousins, 2nd cousins, aunts or nieces.
The cripples were confined to the Carmelite monastery.
The Count of Armagnac had 2 sons/brothers: Jean & Charles, & 4 daughter/sisters: Mary (cripple), Eleanor (cripple), Isabeau “Isabelle” d’Armagnac, & Bonne (halfwit) & was confined away.
Blanche of Brittany (wife/mother) died having Jean d’Armagnac (30, Isabelle’s son, 10th son/brother, heir).

Fast forward, The Count of Foix at war was expecting a head to be brought to him.
The Count of Armagnac was about to be excommunicated by the papal from the grace of the church, from the body of Christ, & will be cursed like Cain & Judas.
The Count of Armagnac with Countess Isabelle Armagnac (Navarre, Philip’s stepmother) had made his escape from Lectoure, SW France through secret underground passageways.
Valencia, Spain seemed like a nice place to hold up in.
What is the future for the 2 of them?

I do not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing free books from publishers & authors. Therefore, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one.

Warning: This book contains descriptive accounts of extremely graphic adult content (racial hatred), violence, or expletive language &/or uncensored sexually explicit material (incest, minor verbal, psychological, emotional, physical & sexual abuse) which is only suitable for mature readers.
It may be offensive or have potential adverse psychological effects on the reader. If you are especially sensitive to this type of material, it is strongly advised not to read any further.

An awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very professionally written 17th Century medieval book. It was quite easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great description list of unique characters, settings, facts etc. to keep track of. This could also make another great 17th Century medieval movie, or better yet a mini TV series. Wow, there is no doubt in my mind this is an extremely easy rating of 5 stars.

Surprisingly good

For my Reading Challenge I had to choose a book that was based on a true story and I chose this one.
It is a crude tale about a crazy family that lived in France in the 15th century. I thought the story was going to be painful to read but this author made it interesting enough. She showed the story from different point of views and, as every time I read true stories from those times, I'm surprised about the brutal way people were treated if you tried to think for yourself.
The writing was great and it made me finish the book in a day, as brutal as the story was.
Warning There is mention of sexual abuse but nothing too graphic. It is a clean read, except for the topic.

An Interesting Work of Fiction

The story itself is interesting, but the telling is less so. The language is uneven, sometimes formal and sometimes colloquial, with several phrases used repeatedly for effect. This eventually grew annoying because it didn't mean anything or contribute the story. The characters were one dimensional. Probably their real personalities are lost to history, but this is a novel and some character development would have been nice.

Great modern look on the old topic

The story of Isabelle keeps your attention from the beginning to and end. You are deep diving into the world of her feelings and controversial choices she has to make. You live through this time with her and become almost an active participant. Good to read! Good to distract yourself from daily routine. Enjoy!
