The One Who Watches

Rate this book
An accident or a homicide?
Detective Grace Sheppard arrives at the scene of a car wreck in Tall Pines that appears to be an accident, but could it have been more than that?
After looking into the victim of the crash, Grace discovers another mysterious death linked to the young man. Under pressure to solve the case from the police chief, Grace sets out to find the truth with help from Officer Adam MacIntyre and Medical Examiner, Raven Lockwood. But Grace soon learns that Raven is dealing with her own mystery.

A secret admirer or a stalker?
P.I. Madigan Knox is on a mission to find someone. Her biological mother.
As leads on her mother's whereabouts run dry, Grace asks Madigan to investigate a mysterious gift Raven received after a date gone wrong. Madigan is determined to find the person responsible, but when another gift is delivered, she questions her abilities and fears for Raven's safety.

Grace and Madigan delve deeper into their respective cases, and as questions lead to more discoveries, one thing is clear: someone is watching, protecting their secrets at all costs.

Emerald O’Brien never disappoints and this book is no exception. Once again Knox and Shepard are thrown into a mystery and the sisters talents come to life. I love watching their relationship develop and learning new things about each of them in these stories.

This book sucked me in from page one. I was dying to know what was going on, what had caused the accident, and what secrets were waiting for us in this latest installment.

O’Brien proves once again that she is an author to pay close attention to in the crime genre. Her books are filled with tension and mystery, but also true to life relationships and characters you will root for.

Addictive and enthralling, this book will have you second-guessing your every assumption and flipping through the pages at lightning speed to get to that stunning conclusion.

The One Who Watches is a book to be watched!

It was just a car accident in the rain - then it wasn't. As Grace looked at the evidence it was not so simple. The story evolves pulling in more people. Each person brings a perspective that differs and stretches the true tale. It's a complex, well put together story. We learn quite a bit about the main characters as the author brings them to life.

If you love a good mystery, particularly with a powerful female lead who always wants the truth - don't put this one down.

Sad it is over

I loved these books about Grace and Madigan. I am glad they both got the love they wanted and needed but I am sad the series is over.

I loved this series....

I loved the two female leads, the life problems they faced and how they worked thru them. Grace and Magidan (two non-blood-related but very close sisters) have had difficult lives but are taking it "one day at a time"! Their stories are interesting, suspenseful and sometimes down right scary! The problems they work through are intense and you never know how they will be resolved. All they really want is a life with love, family and to do as best as they can with their careers. I would recommend this series if you 1-like female leads, 2- like interesting and suspenseful story lines, 3-enjoy a good mystery and 4-enjoy a little romance thrown in the mix! 💖 I am looking forward to more books about the lovely ladies. How do Magidan and Jack, Grace and Mac, and Raven and Melinda (did not see that coming 💞) work out? What about Vic? Magidans mother? What happens with Mac's daughter? Did that relationship work out? Emerald, thank you 🙏 for this series and look forward to more. Now, on to another series...maybe Avert Hart, or.....maybe a standalone! Haven't decided but am sure either will be good! Keep on writing 📝📝📝!

The fireman at the accident said that it looked like “the brake pads had been cut.” Later the police forensic investigator agreed with the fireman, “it looked like the brake pads had been cut.” Enough said?
Even without that ridiculously obvious mistake, the story itself was not enjoyable. The book’s subplot of searching for a birth mother, is not well enough explained and the characters are not well enough developed for a stand alone book, I assume this was all explained in previous books in the series. The book jumps back and forth between two different characters, each with their own investigation, with a small amount of crossover between the two stories. I also did not enjoy the writing style that had the character’s thoughts written out in italics before they say or do something based on those thoughts.
I felt that it was simply not a well thought out or well researched book. I will not be reading others in the series. This book, although not too long, took a long time for me to finish simply because I did not find it interesting and really didn’t care what happened to the characters.

New to both the author and her two protagonists, cop Detective Grace Sheppard and her sister, PI Madigan Knox, there were some elements herein that pleased, like some of the plot developments and the generally OK writing style – but too many that indeed did not. It was almost like reading two independent novellas that for no good reason were presented in alternating chapters – disrupting one’s sensitivities upon each major scene shift. When the two cases did coalesce a little toward the end, that almost seemed like a contrived outcome insisted upon by some editor.

We were also often confused by all the differing characters and who was doing what to whom. Getting us inside Sheppard and Knox’s minds with frequent (and often lengthy) italicized paragraphs was hardly much fun. Moreover, that the two leading ladies did little to endear themselves to us didn’t help at all – and in the end, we were just glad for it to conclude, with resolve to leave this series to others who apparently found it more interesting and engaging. Sorry.

I hadn't read the previous books in the series which put me at a distinct disadvantage. However I thought the plot was too convoluted, too many players to keep track of and far too much dialogue. Also the thought processes in italics were extremely annoying. There are much better police procedural out there.

THIS HAD ALOT OF CASES GOING ON SOME NEW, SOME OLD, (at the same time) IT MADE IT REALLY HARD TO FIGUIRE OUT ANYTHING, NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE. I WISH IT HADN'T BEEN SO MANY, I THINK IT WAS AN OVERLOAD AND MADE THE STORYLINE VERY CONFUSING. TOO MUCH OF WHAT THEY WERE THINKING ABOUT INBETWEEN WHAT WAS ACTULLLY HAPPENING AND TOO MUCH PERSONAL STUFF. ;<

A challenging read

I enjoyed this book very much. The author obviously has great affection for her characters, and there are two parallel investigations happening at the same time. Concentration is definitely needed to follow both at once! A challenging but excellent read, this is a well written book which was worth the effort. Highly recommended.

The book was ok. One sister was a cop and the other was a private eye. I thought it was strange that the sister who was a cop called all of the shots. I don't remember her rank but she always determined the next move in the murder she was investigating. The book ended well. Not sure if I will read this author again. Everything was too pat.

Just try to keep up with the clues. Grace Sheppard, detective, and Maddi Knox, PI, are foster care siblings. Knox is just getting into the PI business, and Sheppard is a new detective still proving her abilities. In this fourth of a series, Sheppard is looking at a car accident death as maybe not an accident and related to a supposed suicide death three years before. Well plotted.

This is written in a style I dislike intensely. It is almost the same as deciding to read two books at once: a chapter from one; a chapter from another. The common link (so far) is the main investigating/PI character in alternating chapters are sisters. I plan to finish, but have zero intention of ever picking up another Emerald O'Brien book.

This author and I don't seem to be on the same page.

This is the second book by this author I have read and for some reason we don't seem to click. I am sure the author is good but I think I will pass on further books.

Watches

This is a nice, clean mystery/romance. The story is written from the point of view of two people, so you have to pay attention, as there are a lot of characters introduced, with little information. Interesting story that is wrapped up in the end.

A fun read, eh!

Lots of guessing “who done it” in this one. I’d like to see the author’s working outline as they began sketching ideas. Just when the reader thinks they’ve figured out the truth a new twist pops up. Well written, fun story…

Good read

This has two plots in one book. This is about sisters and each has a mystery of their own. Very entertaining.

Disappointed

Boring! Didn’t hold my interest! Like most writers to much description makes you lose the main ingredient to the story.

I kinda like crime and thriller books and it's a good one. Sometimes it seems overly complicated, i mean unnecessarily. However, I would say, a decent one!

Very interesting book to read. It's not just one story. Exciting characters throughout the book. The main story keeps you guessing all the way to the end.

The italics used for the character’s thoughts ( instead of just regular prose like every other book) drove me crazy. Couldn’t read anymore.

The plot was a little confusing at times. Like the bond the two sisters are forming. Wish I had read the previous stories before jumping into this book.

This is a must read book!!

Grace and Madigan are at it again. Chasing leads and interviewing suspects. Getting caught in scary situations and shootouts. I loved the changes in their lives and the adults they have become. Finally some love partners and family. Lots of blanks were filled in from the previous books involving Jack and Julia and a new person, Vic. He gave Madigan some much needed background about her mother. Somethings just are not meant to be. The connection between the two cases was well written and not expected. I did not have the ending before I read it. Great book. I loved the whole series.

Another great addition in this series. A wonderful storyline that is well plotted.

Madigan continues her search for her birth mother while taking on her first paying PI job. Grace and Mac continue to develop their relationship and work on a case that seems to be connected to s couple of closed cases.

Emerald O’Brien do you know how much sleep I lost reading this book? That’s because I read in bed at night and I stayed up many nights because I couldn’t put this book down. It was quite the adventure! Keep writing!

I love Knox and Sheppard. The only complaint I have about this book is there was too much going on at the end to be believable. I don't want to spoil anything so that's all I will say. It wasn't enough to NOT like the book though! I still recommend it :D
