The Gateway Trackers #7

Gift of the Darkness

Rate this book

A warning from the past, an uncertain future, an impossible choice...

For hundreds of years, the Durupinen have carried the power of the Gateway in their bloodlines. Now, a dire warning from the past might mean that power must come to an end. Jess Ballard has often considered her gift a curse — but now it may truly become one, unless she can convince the leaders of the Durupinen world to restore the power of the Gateways where it rightly belongs. The Durupinen have always considered themselves a force for what is good in the world, but has the intoxication of power left them unable to distinguish between what is right and wrong?

Jess, Hannah, Milo, and their allies are in a race against time as they gather together the most influential Durupinen from around the world to join the fight. As the Necromancer threat looms, and the Durupinen leaders battle over which course to take, Jess must travel her own path, look within herself and ask: How far will she go to right an ancient wrong, and will her connection to the spirit world survive it?

Gift of the Darkness is the highly-anticipated final installment in The Gateway Trackers series by E.E. Holmes.

E.E. Holmes grew up near Boston, Massachusetts, where she spent the majority of her childhood reading books. She read them almost constantly, and as a result, perfected the art of walking and reading at the same time, a skill she can still perform to this day with remarkably few instances of falling on her face. She also wrote many books and poems in blank books and on the backs of legal pads her father brought home from the office. They remain some of her finest work.

She soon learned to love literature of the dramatic persuasion, and earned a B.A. in theater from the College of the Holy Cross. After graduation, she set out to prove that her degree was, in fact, not useless, and worked as a principal actor in a summer Shakespeare festival and as a theater teacher, directing over thirty productions and numerous workshops for youth and high school students. She spent several years as the theater director at Wakefield High School where she also taught English literature and public speaking. It was in her classroom that she discovered the horrible truth: a disturbingly large percentage of high school students hate to read. This revelation devastated and bewildered her. She decided she wanted to do something about it, and thus she started work on her first young adult novel, Spirit Legacy: Book 1 of the Gateway Trilogy, which has gone on to win awards from Chanticleer Book Reviews and Media and The Independent Publisher Book Awards. She is also the author of three one act plays, one of which premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

E.E. Holmes lives in central Massachusetts with her husband, two children, and small, but surprisingly loud dog. When not writing, she enjoys watching unhealthy amounts of British television, procrastinating, and rediscovering her favorite books from her childhood all over again with her kids.

I can’t believe this is the end! I’m not ready!

Okay, bear with me because I have ALL the feels right now.

I remember reading The Gateway Trilogy when I bought my first kindle, not knowing what to expect but getting sucked into this world.

When I heard that ee Holmes was continuing the story in a new series, I was psyched!

And it has been more than I could have imagined. Her style of writing sucks you in, and her characters leap off the page, no doubt to go cause more mischief (I’m looking at you, Jess!).

Honestly, ee Holmes is one of the greatest writers when it comes to characterization that I have ever seen—and I’ve read a LOT of books.

This is why it’s so hard to say goodbye.

Gift of the Darkness is the culmination of ten books, and it ends Jess’s story with a bang.

Thank you, Emily, for sharing these incredible books with us!

I can't believe over

I truly enjoyed all of these books. We are right now in the middle of a pandemic and they've been a great diversion for me. I feel like I know every one of these characters. I will miss them. Hard off to the author. How on earth does a person come up with this detailed make believe world!

Really good ending to the series. All the books are riveting and it is difficult to put the book down once you start it. Suffice to say that you will not be disappointed with the plot, the characters and the outcome. I am sad that this series is ended.....

All good things must come to an end. I am so stinking sad that this series is over. I really hope that the author will write about these characters again in the future.

Great read.

Spellbinding from the first book through to the last. Highly recommended. Couldn't put down. Hope the next series will be as good, and I am sure it will be.

The last book! I’m excited and grieved. The question is... What will I do now? Loved this little group of outliers and rebels: friends, sisters, allies, lovers and ghosts. The villains were great too. I really did enjoy this series.

I'm sad. I spent a whole month reading the entire series and now it's over. Now what am I supposed to read?

This book brings it all to a close. There wasn't as much character development, which wasn't a big deal, and where there was, it made sense. Also, I like the fact that characters aren't safe. I'm not spoiling anything, but there have been moments, in this book and in previous ones wear a tear was shed.

And here's the thing, were the author to continue the adventures of Jessica, Hannah, Milo, and friends, I would totally read it because so much more can be written with this series. The world that this author created is so rich with detail and mythology, that I can see that more books would be possible.

So yeah. I really, really liked this book and the series.

Ten books in all...amazing that from the first three Gateway Trilogy to the final ending in the last Gateway Trackers book I was kept involved in the plot and memorable characters.

A Masterpiece

Passionate characters, energetic spirits and an intricately woven tale full of action, danger and intrigue makes for powerful storytelling. My only hope is if there is a future book, Hannah will nature and toughen her stance on the world. Really compelling read.

This series has been a long time coming. 7 books read with even more wanting. So many questions still.

The writing style was great! The story, the plot, the world! I thoroughly enjoyed it.

However,

I can't praise this book without some things I wasn't a fan of. Lets begin!

1. There was a lot of unnecessary side plots in this story.

The series in my opinion could have been shorter. There were too many extra parts that was just not needed.

2. Not all the books in the series were fast pace.

I would say 1-3 and the final book 7 went all super quick. I am actually surprised by how quickly I just finished this book. The rest of the series however, were slightly boring - if I am being honest.

3. I stopped reading.

This series, because it was so long, made me fall into a small reading slump. I did not like that at all.

4. The ending could have been better.

I like how the story was wrapped up but, I was just, probably selfishly, wanting more. I had more questions than I had answers. I want to know what happened to the characters. Will they have a good life? Do they get to stay together? Get married even? I don't know. It was a bit bland the ending. I wanted something better.

5. It hasn't left me with a nice feeling.

Normally with books that have good endings, I feel something, a sort of happiness and love for the book. I didn't this time. I feel nothing, just okay. That was a good story. It kind of frustrates me.

If I know the characters have a happy, safe life then I would find it was a truly great book, but the truth is, I don't know if they did or not. The way it ended, it just wasn't fulfilling enough for me.

Maybe I set the hype of this series too high.

I did enjoy it though - promise!

Up to this final book, I enjoyed the series. However, like most "action" stories, the author chose to follow the same old tired trope in this final novel.

Without giving away any spoilers, if you've ever read an action novel in your life, you see can see what is going to happen long before you read a single sentence.

Picture yourself as the hero/heroine. You've just learned that you and you alone have the knowledge or skill to save the world. What might you do? Go ahead and save the world? Not if you exist in a novel.

First, upon learning that you need to save the world, you have to go around and waste time telling everyone about it before you act.

Then you need to stop off for a bite to eat, take a nap, or maybe even engage in some intimate activity. After all, who wants to save the world when you're hungry or tired or pent up?

Obviously there will be no time for any of that after save the world.

Are there no other alternatives when it comes to writing action?

Don't get me wrong, the story is fine, just utterly too predictable and sadly follows the same exact path as 99% of the other stories out there.

Good Series-Sorry To See It Reach The End

Although I struggled with a few of these toward the middle of the series, I’m glad I stuck it out to the end.
And although, I may not necessarily agree with all the outcomes of the difficult tasks of trying to successfully and succinctly wrap up the main plot and many subplots within.
As much as I’d like to start the next series she mentioned, I’m not a fan of having to wait on the next book in the series. I read A LOT, and sometimes the books begin to run together, and I also don’t care for page fillers involving massive recapping of everything that had transpired in the previous 1 or 2 books. I don’t care for page fillers in general, and certainly not it in a series or spin-off, which makes me feel a sense of dejavú.
Thank goodness E.E. Holmes does a good job on keeping on track and limiting this amount of boring, tedious filler.

Absolutely superb!

Any time I'm lucky enough to read a series of books written by a master storyteller, I find myself in absolute awe at the genius and talent required to carry a single story through multiple books, developing characters that I've grown to know and love as surely as if they were actually present in my life. E.E. Holmes is such a talent and this culmination of the Gateway series was everything it should be: satisfying on every level and tying up every loose end and answering every question. Part of me hopes that one of the streaming services will commission a series based on these books, but a larger part of me thinks they should stand forever on their own. The images my mind has created of these characters and settings are perfect on their own. I will continue to recommend this series of books to my friends and give the entire series five stars and two thumbs-up.

These books never disappoint! Another great addition to the Gateway Tracker series and now comes the painful wait until book 8 is released in December. Following this series along from the original 3 books to the Gateway Trackers series, I continue to be in awe of these stories. I can't believe there aren't more reviews for this series. Fantasy is not my go-to genre but I wanted to dive into something new and these books have not disappointed. It's the type of fantasy that is just interesting and intricate enough without confusing you (like GOT or LOTR can be at first). Holmes paints the Durupinen world vividly and in this book we get to explore some new places and meet many new characters, including the Grand High Priestess herself. Add in Milo's sarcasm, some heartbreaking & tear filled moments, a pinch of spook and a few 'swoon worthy' love moments and you've got a page turning story that you won't want to put down. I highly recommend giving this a read!

Excellent

I began reading the the series as a change from.my normal diet of James Patterson and other similar novelists. Little did I know I was going to be willingly dragged into a journey worthy of Harry Potter or The Lord of the Rings. I'm some aspects better than Rowling in plot complexity as Holmes believably intertwines her world of the gateways with the real world. Having spent many years in England, I especially enjoyed the Traveler clan developments. The writing style is personal and drew me in with ease. Character development is such that I must thank Jess and Hannah, Milo, Tia, and Savvy for allowing me to be part of the world for this brief time, and hope that your creator behind the curtain will allow us to meet again in another series. Ms. Holmes, thank you for sharing your author's story telling gift so well.

Poor Jess it's always her

It was along time ago I read book 6, normally I am counting down the days until the next book I love this series, but this time I never rushed to download the next book when it was released (it was a year wait) but somehow I forgot I hadn't read it now I got book 7 and 8 to read.I think it's better when you can read back to back.it took me a while to remember book 6 so I was playing catch up from the beginning.no one likes the next book repeating all from past book but when release dates are big gaps from last you need a kind of reminder.A recap page so you can get back into all the characters.I read allot at least 300 books a year (yeah really my Amazon unlimited keeps me up to date on how many) so you head needs to be reminded of that world.
The twist in this book was interesting felt like the end of the series but I'm off to read book 8 now

I'm not sure I can cope with it being over...

I'm not ready to say goodbye yet, my heart hurts at the thought of saying goodbye to Jess, Milo, Hannah, Finn, Savvy and everyone else. I could be here a while listing names.

Again it was a twist in the series I didn't see coming but absolutely ate it up nonetheless. E.E. Holmes has a way of keeping you on your toes and completely enthralled with everything that is happening. There were so many OMG and WTF moments in this last installment. And you will not want to put the book down, I know I didn't.

It really has been one of the best series I have had the pleasure to read and it's such a unique story line and you will love every second of it.

I can't believe I just read all 10 books in a row!

Not realizing it would be 10 books later, I waited until the end of the whole story to write a review. I don't think I've ever read this many books in so short a time!
Starting with the unique personalities of the characters, each was developed with humor and feeling, and just enough "snark" to make things interesting. I loved how you were taken from current times into the ancient world full of unknown mysteries and then back again. With the underlying thread, dealing with ties with the spirit world, you were constantly on the edge of your chair wondering what dangers were ahead. Excellent series, excellent writer!

Book #7 picks up right where book #6 ended. Savvy's life hangs in the balance, and Jess jumps in ready to do what is necessary to save her friend.

I love this series, and the characters are now like good friends of mine. I usually know how they will respond to adversity, who will protect whom, who will cave first, etc. But after 10 books into these characters (and 2 months of only reading about these characters), I'm going to stop and take a break before finishing the series. I know I only have 3 more books to go, but I'm wanting to read something else for a bit. Too much of a good thing, etc.

In reading a series that goes for more than 4 or 5 books, I usually lose interest before reaching the end because they fall into a pattern. (Excludes HP, of course!) This series kept my interest so much that I read the 10 books one right after another! Each book continues the previous one but takes a totally different direction. Holmes' imagination and world-creating kept me hooked from the start. I felt the ending was satisfying and didn't seem contrived. But I'm sorry to say goodbye to Jessica, Hannah, Milo and company. I've enjoyed our travels!

Another excellent book by E. E. Holmes. I definitely recommend it for everyone. This is a great conclusion to her Gateway Series. Four stars all around. I read all 7 Gateway Trackers seris within 3 weeks. E. E. Holmes is an awesome writer and I so wish she would write more books like these. Absolutely fascinating and gripping. All of the books in the Gateway Trackers were 4 **** reading. They are exciting, haunting, mysterious, and so imaginative. I loved every single one of them and I recommend all of them. You won't be able to put them down.

Great series

I read the searies in a marathon reading, ignoring the work I needed to be doing. My only complaint is when the characters start guilt tripping themselves... taking on responsibility for things that is not their fault or responsibility. It seems to be a trend in novels these days..."apologizing for a rainy day". I cannot decide if this is ultimate narcissism or what. Feeling guilty for not being omnipotent or omniscient makes no sense to me. The courage of the characters is admirable. Anyway, I enjoyed these books and the people in them.

This is the last in a series of books starting with The Gateway Trilogy and onto The Gateway Trackers and I've enjoyed them all! I would describe the genre as young adult, paranormal fantasy fiction that revolves around the main character Jess, as she tries to come to terms with her abilities within the spirit world.
Over the course of the 7 books you follow Jess and her friends on many varied and thrilling adventures that are written so well they almost feel real. I haven't been able to put this series of books down as you always want to know what is going to happen next.

WOW WOW WOW!! AMAZING! I really don’t know what else to say about this series.
I started of with just the first 3 from the Gateway series and then was so hooked I had to read the spin of series!!
There are not many series out there that will hold me with this amount of books, normally I get bored at Book 5 or so.
But EE HOLMES has painted such a vivid picture of the life’s of Jess and Hannah and their friends........I simply needed to know how it ended.

The scenes were so real that I felt I was walking threw the forest with them or walking in the hallways of the castle. The people had distinct personalitys. I liked the sarcasm and interaction between the characters. The story line kept me on my toes so that sometimes 😂 I didn't get the sleep I needed. I have time r

Recommended this book on the Internet when ever it was advertised . I wil look forward to reading more of EE Holmes books.

Great finish

What an exciting end to the series. Certainly a page turner and we learn even more about spirit lore, with a grand revelation I won't spoil. We also find out where true loyalties lie. I'll be sorry to we these characters go, but they really did come to life through the series and kept me company for many an evening. If you enjoy well written paranormal adventures with interesting characters, this series is a just read.
