The battle for New York has been won. Now they fight for their own survival.
Skyfolk are going missing, and the elusive enemy is nowhere to be found.
When Dave ends up caught in the thick of it and suffers through experiments no one at Headquarters was ready for, they're forced to take risky measures and ally with gangs they can't trust. But the more they unravel the enemy's motives, the more secrets about their own nature leak out, along with threats to their survival.
And while they seek retaliation, they are not prepared for its consequences – and the horrible truth it will reveal.
Alexandra Engellmann is a self-published author and artist. At ten years old, she was allowed into the adult fantasy section of her local library, which might have scarred her for life. At twelve, she started learning English from Eminem's songs, which did not please her teachers. At eighteen, she got the first glimpse of a story that later became the Sky Ghosts series. Ten years later, having quit a career in IT, she splits her time between writing, painting, and procrastinating, and dreams of escaping to the sea with her possibly telepathic cat Cookie.

Another great story about the Sky Ghosts. I love the characters. Pain & Jane are so much fun and so are their friends. This book was full of action. I felt so sorry for Dave and hope that he finds peace in the book or at least some help. I can't wait until the next book!
Alexandra Engellmann is one of my favorite authors. If you’ve followed me for any amount of time, you’ll know she’s an author that I follow one might say religiously. And I don’t say that lightly. There aren’t many authors I can name whose work I eagerly and (im)patiently wait to be released. Engellmann is one of those few. Her world building, the characters that she’s created, the plots that brings the world and characters together in a tapestry so rich, you can’t help but want more. It’s a wonder really, that I finished this book as quickly as I did. Engellmann’s books are ones that I like to take my time with. There’s so much more to these urban fantasies than meets the eye.
Sure, they take place in real cities that we know about, but she brings such a magical approach to everything (pun intended, because yes, I know that’s what urban fantasy is all about). There’s something different about these books, whether it’s the characters that have more layers than an onion, the lore of the world that I have so much fun learning about, or maybe it’s just the culmination of all the things that make her books…her books. Her voice as a writer is one that stands out, and that doesn’t change with this latest entry in the Sky Ghosts series.
We return to the world of the Ghosts with disappearances and abductions happening all over, and not just the good guys. We have the antagonists to the Ghosts, the “Beasts” also getting abducted. Now, why are they being taken, and by who? Who could take people who have superhuman powers? These are just some of the questions being tackled in Retaliation. They get answered, and more, throughout the course of the book. But that’s not all; we get to sides of characters that I didn’t even know I wanted to learn more about.
That’s the great thing about a great author: They make you care about the characters, even ones that are usually on the sidelines. If an author can create characters that you come to care about, then that makes the plot even more effective, because you care about what happens to these characters that you’ve become attached to. I won’t spoil it, but there was a situation in this book where my chest was literally hurting because I didn’t know how a character would come out of it. And that’s the magic of Engellmann’s Sky Ghosts series: you have so many characters, put in so many situations that you have to keep turning the page, even if only to figure if a character you love (or hate, because there are some of those as well) gets what they need or deserve.
The pacing was good, we get to see what characters other than Pain, Jane, Chad and Dave are up to, and there are twists that I just didn’t see coming! I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little irritated that I’ve finished this book, but only because now I have to wait for the next one.
I love this series so much! It has such a great mix of action, suspense, and even a bit of romance that makes it interesting. The world that Engellmann has created is so intriguing and I just know there is so much more to be explored and I can't wait!
