When Ren, a Synergy demon, begins to show favor towards his assignments it creates concern for his superiors and he is sentenced to the one thing he never expected: Weekly sessions with famed demon therapist Dr. Lilith Madson.
A moral debacle ensues when an intriguing human recognizes his invisible presence on the streets and forces him to realize Lilith may have a wicked agenda of her own. Whose side will he take? The human with the all-consuming need for revenge or the delusional therapist determined to wreak havoc?
“Sessions with a Demon” is a great read. I am not your typical fantasy, magical-realist-type reader, but O’Malley got me on this one. Her protagonist, Ren, is a demon with a soft-side. His official title is a Synergy Demon. His job, a Synergy Demon. I say job, because that is literally his job. Like ours. He even goes to a therapist. It’s awesome. I would go more into is, but the twist…pretty good.
Ren encounters challenges with ethics and morality of demonic beliefs. This ideological content challenges the reader to think. Can bad be good? The heroin of the story is Ashlynn or “Ash”. Strong and independent, her thirst for revenge is dangerous. Their relationship is contentious, but they appeal to each other. O’Malley develops each character with clever backstory. The reader empathizes for each character. I never thought I would empathize for a demon.
O’Malley is a strong writer. Her experience oozes in her narration. Her scene description and dialogue blend well together and provide a good flow to the novel. “Sessions with a Demon” is accessible to most readers. It is fantastical and in ways religious, but the strong character development and story line really drive O’Malley’s plot. Fun read!” Matthew John Meagher; Author of Irish Town
I didn’t expect to fall so hard for an urban fantasy, but Sessions with a Demon completely swept me off my feet.
From the first few pages, I was hooked—and honestly, I couldn’t help but fall for Ren. Yes, he’s a demon. Yes, he probably needs more therapy than he’ll admit. But somehow, that just made him even more relatable. His sessions were supposed to help him sort things out… but it quickly becomes clear that therapy might be the least of his problems.
And then there’s Ash. Powerful, fearless, and exactly the kind of badass you want on your side when everything starts to unravel. Their dynamic? Electric.
This story is packed with magic, heart, and the kind of depth that lingers long after the last page. If you’ve ever wondered what lies beneath the surface—or within yourself—this one’s for you.
Sessions with a Demon wasn't totally what I was expecting (thought the sessions with his therapist would be more integral to the story), but it was still an enjoyable read. Ren is a surprisingly likeable character for being a demon. The best parts of this book were definitely when he was trying to talk to his "friends."
I don’t usually read fantasy type books but I ended up really loving this story. I didn’t know I would ever want to root for a demon as much as I did. Quick and enjoyable read for me.
I thought this was HILARIOUS! I absolutely loved the sarcastic nature and the comparison of demons and cats. I was interested from the beginning to end. Sure, there was another way the author could have gone with a Demon in therapy (which if you read until the end, she DOES and leaves a WIDE opening for another book) but the premise took a turn that kept it interesting and a plot twist you don't see coming. *I kinda did but didn't REALLY know*. I thought this new author did a great job and made a really interesting book. I laughed so many times and this was entertainment. It wasn't meant as a *cry your eyes out* or anything other than pure fun. That's what I got out of it. 🤷♀️ I'll keep an eye on this author and see if a sequel comes up from this.
Yes, even synergy demons need to decompress their feelings - especially when they find themselves questioning their purpose (to enhance humans' misery), and befriending the likes of magic-wielding mortals and even - gasp - angels. And, of course, struggling with a budding sense of justice when he discovers his own therapist is reaping human souls to wear as a glorified, Cruella-de-Vil-style otherworldly coat.
Finn O'Malley's urban fantasy novel "Sessions with a Demon" is one that challenges the stereotypes associated with villainous supernatural beings. Ren, the titular demon, is unapologetically, morally grey, and admits as much, as we follow his character arc from delighting in ruining people's lives to aligning himself alongside the very forces he seeks to corrupt to bring an exceptionally evil individual to justice. Along for the ride is Ash, a tempestuous mortal with a horrific past, and Augustine, a well-meaning albeit "repugnant" angel. (Reading this novel alongside binge-watching Netflix's The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has definitely brought hallowe'en forward a few months).
O'Malley pits the forces of questionable good against ambiguous evil in this delightful read, infusing dialogue with witty humor, demonic knowledge, and a pretty spectacular showdown. With so much going on, it's no wonder Ren needs therapy.
Who would have thought that a demon could be so endearing?
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Urban fantasy is not my usual niche, but this was the perfect book for me to stretch with and try something new.
It took only took a few pages before I found it impossible to do anything but adore Ren, despite him being a demon. A demon, with his own set of problems, and needing therapy? These therapy sessions quickly became the least of his problems, or perhaps where they began? All of it all coming to a head when Ren crosses paths with Ash. Ash is the bad@$# we all strive to be when things become too heavy to bear....
Walk, don't run, to get yourself your own copy of Sessions with a Demon! If you love magic, badass protagonists and the possibility that there's so much more than meets the eye, this book won't disappoint.
Now, one wonders...will there be a second installment? We can sure hope!
Session with a Demon is a super fun concept with an interesting and complex story. I really enjoyed Ren and Ash as characters. My problem with the story was that it fell flat for me. A lot of things happened and it had a great opportunity for more depth and background and character growth. I felt the character connections were not as strong as they could have been. I wish I could have seen Ren grown fond of Ash and a previous care for humans on some level to make his actions stronger. It felt like I was being told more than shown and the lack of breadcrumbs for the end was disappointing. However, all that being said this was a good read. I feel like if it had been longer with more depth weaved in it would be perfect. I’m excited to see what else comes from this author in the future and I hope the story of Ren and Ash continues.
Was a really fun, easy read, I liked the characters and the storyline but I think it could have been longer to really delve into the characters personalities it felt slightly rushed at times but overall I'm looking forward to the next book
Well that was sure an adventure. I wasn't sure what to expect when I opened it on Kindle but I thoroughly enjoyed this read. Highly recommend if you don't get your knickers in a twist over reading about a day in the life of a demon.
