FUCK IT. everything i love about comics rolled up into one iconic compendium. where it starts & where it ends is fuuuckinggg ridiculous - the stakes rise and rise and strip back down and set back up in this jenga tower of gigantic proportions. it's infinitely satisfying seeing everything slot back into each other and is SO worth sifting through the first volume to get to this payoff. fuck fuck fuck. METAL.

SHOUTOUT @DEIRDRESKYE FOR BUYING THIS FOR ME AHHHHHHHH I'M SO GLAD I FINALLY FUCKING FINISHED IT!!!

Well well well. I was doubting about this due to the whole AvX stuff that basically interrupts the story and then there is Consequences that is surprisingly good and my faith is restored. In Kieron we trust.

I really liked Gillen's run and always found Cyclops change into a Magneto figure really coherent for the character. And this run makes excellent point for it.

And a really badass ending too!

Poor Kieron Gillen. His Uncanny run was drowned in events and crossovers (Fear Itself, Schism, Regenesis, Avengers vs. X-Men), and the series was relaunched twice while he was writing it. But I have to give the man credit, he managed some great storytelling in spite of all the hijacking. His characterization of Cyclops especially stood out, and the whole Extinction Team concept brings Cyclops' vision to its logical conclusion.

Most of this collection ties in with AvX (issues 11-20 and the Consequences miniseries). I highly recommend reading these issues alongside the event, as they really deepen the characterization of the main X-Men cast. Plus, parts of the event occur between the Uncanny issues. Consequences is the coda to Gillen's run, following up with the cast after AvX and setting up what's to come. I keep saying it, but Cyclops emerges as the most fascinating character during this X-Men era. His absolute conviction in saving mutants, unrepentance, and adoption of tactics some deem extreme kept me thoroughly invested. Gillen, Fraction, and a few others took bold risks during this era and these risks largely paid off. This really felt like a different time for the mutants.

Before all that, we get the Tabula Rasa storyline, which has some smart and interesting ideas as well as memorable comedy courtesy of Namor and Hope. Elsewhere throughout the book, Magik and Colossus' relationship is explored with great depth, and Sinister steals every issue he's in. I *love* how Gillen writes Sinister. So campy, so much fun, and his underground Victorian London is just... delightfully bizarre.

Gillen’s run on Uncanny X-Men was great! Well written throughout, solid art for the most part. The stuff he did with Sinister was fantastic. I don’t know how he felt about the AvX event, but I’m curious what he would’ve done if that didn’t happen. His AvX: Consequences tie-in miniseries was good too though. What he did with Unit (a robot trying to be the medicine the universe “needs”, sans the spoonful of sugar) was interesting too, a character I’d never even heard of before.

Maybe one of the most consistent writers, his X-Men run is no different, and I would highly recommend to any X-Fan.

issues 11-20 are all tie ins to AvX which was hugely disappointing to me. gillen was doing fun, interesting work with great artists, but then it all became secondary to a bad event.

they are usually one of stories exploring a singular character but just the knowledge rhwy were not continuing gillens story was frustrating.

consequences was fine. basically just setting up bendis' run with cyclops in jail but ending up out teamed with Magneto, Emma, Illyana.

I read this almost exclusively for the Magik content. On that front it doesn’t disappoint. Sinister takes up a frustratingly large portion of the volume though, and there’s some AvX stuff missing. Not enough to make me upset, but enough to where I felt like I only got 80% of the story.

Not the most memorable, but some good storytelling.

This companion to Avengers vs. X-Men provides the context and character development the big event lacks. It's a satisfying return to Gillen's gonzo Sinister concept, it has all the creepy fun you expect from Magik, and except for the art (delivered alternately by Greg Land and a series of rushed fill-ins) it's great.

I fell off the planet before this series came out. Quite intrigued with Sinster's Lairs and a back story. Quite bored with Colossus and his juggy power. The story with the sentient taking over Danger and Cyclops taking a major stance for Utopia. Emma and Namor getting it on. Priceless!!!
