A sinister new alien foe has emerged. When Ben Saito goes searching for his father and the fate of the powerful starship sent on a mission to secure peace with Earth's colonies, he finds more questions than answers.
It's clear that at least some of the starship and her crew survived, but where have they gone?
Colony forces soon arrive, asking their own questions, and they don't care for Earthers snooping around. At first, they suspects an Earth trap. But they soon find evidence to implicate something new and disturbing that could alter the future of all the colony worlds.
Meanwhile, the survivors are desperately clinging to life as a powerful alien force begins to assimilate them with the help of their human enablers. They must survive, or the truth of what happened will die with them.
First Contact is the second book in the Oblivion series, a high-octane, action-packed blast that will leave military science fiction fans hungry for more!
Ben Saito and his friends too the cruiser Lost to look for his father and his ship, the Atlas
Leaving the devastated meeting site where his father and the crew of the Atlas were last known site of the Atlas. The rear two thirds of the huge capital ship were in pieces, but the front portion of the Atlas containing the bridge and jump engines was missing. Following a slight radiation trail left by the jump engines as it folded space, the Lost and its crew flew to the Sanctuary Space Station 33. What they found turned their blood cold and their minds were forced to accept a new reality. Ben and his friends take their lives in hand and face the devastating loss of hundreds of souls torn to bits by something so alien their minds refuse to accept this reality. Worse were the apparent survivors in bodies that looked identical to their lost friends and family, except they were so alien that it froze even the bravest in disbelief and horror. The characters are amazing as they fight their way past disbelief and horror to anger and pain. Confronted with the images of their loved ones turning on them, they fight! The storyline presents them with impassable obstacles and death at every turn, as presented by the authors. This is a great read!
What I liked about this book was the characters, the story, and the world building. I thought they were all great. This book is full of action. It is easy to read. It is entertaining and best of all, I loved it. Ben is searching for his father, everyone else is trying to stay alive. The mass of metal ship that is constantly swirling is scary, as is the aliens themselves. The Oblivion cult is definately scary. The aliens remind me of the pod people/body snatchers in some old movies. It was a good book and I would recommend it.
This was quite the continuation of the story of Captain Lee Saito, his crew and Sanctuary Station 33. And let's not forget Lee's son, Ben, and his crew (Morgan and Ace) on board the Lost. But the question quickly becomes, who is really human and who is Shapeless? But how do you kill the Shapeless when regular bullets don't seem to have any effect. I was totally surprised by the Epilogue and something like that is why I continue to read sci-fi stories. Thank you Joshua James and Daniel Young for keeping me entertained.
I finished the first book in the series and got part-way through the second. There's no rhyme or reason for the aliens/monsters to attack. Their ability to change shapes of themselves and their star ships is a bit problematic for me. Then there was the point in the second book where the aliens blew up the power plants, which apparently powered gravity generators, w;hich resulted in people floating upward from the planet...
Does the author not know how gravity works?
I'd usually give 2 stars or fewer to books I didn't finish, but all-in-all it's not written poorly, just a bad plot.
I felt like this book had a more natural ending than book one. It picked up right where book one left off and had good action, suspense, and drama. I didn’t know where the epilogue was going when it began, and I was a little confused during parts of it, but by the end it started to make sense, and line up the story for the next book in the series.
First Contact wasn't as engaging as Lost was. We get a little bit more about what the Shapeless want and figure out how to fight them. I am hoping book 3 tells more and is more engaging.
This is a short story, but a good one. For those people just wanting a book enough for a short flight or trip, these books in this series are just for you. Plenty of action and aliens!
Received as an ARC, this is an honest review. The story opens on a planet called Magellan 5, a very hostile farming world; for convict Ahmed Davis, death is the only escape from constant misery. We jump back to the crew of the Lost still on the search for the Atlas and the fate of Ben's father. Their mission looks bleak as they run into the AIC and even deeper mysteries told by the capitan of the Perseverance. For the crew of the Atlas, Sanctuary Station 33 should a place of refuge among the hell they'd been through. Turns out for those on the station is about to become a waking nightmare by Shapeless aliens only pain and sheer terror, catching you by surprise. With edge of your seat action, continual snarky dialogue by the crew of the Lost that will have you laughing; First Contact succeeds in being a masterful sequel to Lost Mission- highly recommended.
While his ideas and concepts are fascinating, and fairly unique in my long reading experience, only a couple of the characters have been fully developed, at the end of book two. I would have liked to read more about who Ace and Morgan are. They come into play early in this second book, and are still in at the end, but we know very little about how they became who they are. We know some about Ada, but don't learn anything about those with her, until the last couple chapters, when we are told a little more about Tomas' history. We STILL know little about the Oblivion and the Shapeless.... Even so, the story line has drawn me in. I look forward to reading more.
The scond book in the the "Oblivion" series - and an excellent tale. In this vook we have a more fuscussed tale rather than the multiple tales running concurrently in book one. It makes for an easier read in my opinion but is no less enjoyable for all that. The easier storyline makes it a simple job for he authors to flesh out (no pun intended) to the characters of the main protagonists in the tale which, for me, makes the story that much more enjoyable The book leaves you with unanswered quiestions - as it should - that, if nothing else, will make sure you read book 3. :) I think it was an excellent tale to read and I would recommend it without hesitation to any fans of Sci-Fi .
I like this series as it is not the expected space opera romp. In book 2 more 'background' is explained and find out more about the crazy creatures that caused all the mayhem in book 1. They were not what I expected so I liked that. But I did get a lot of action and battles and people trying to survive where things have gotten really weird and insane. I did like seeing more of Ben and meeting more of the "good" and "bad" guys. More characters introduced to further crazy plot that is running in this series. It just ends up being a fun addicting story. I liked the mix of fantasy with space opera.
**** SPOILER ALERT **** "First Contact: Oblivion // Book Two" is Young's second book, and second in this series. The author continues doing a superb job of world building and character development in this book. Young packs in plenty of twists and turns in this action packed space opera. I can hardly wait to see what Ben, Ada, Ace, Tomas, and Morgan get up to in book three. I strongly recommend this book. In the interest of transparency: I was given a free review copy of this book and I am voluntarily sharing this review. It is my own honest opinion.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I loved this right up to the ending. It takes the remainder of the Atlas' crew into a nightmare hell they may never escape from and somehow also takes Saito's son to the same space station along with an opposing AIC dreadnought. They all soon come face to face with the real enemy that all of humankind will face. I didn't love the ending; it felt like an emergency stop rather than a gentle conclusion. But I will forgive this if the next (third) in the series is as good as the first two. This book was well written and professionally edited.
A very good follow up book, the action continues, as does the character development. Very easy read, if I have any complaint it's that it's over so quickly! It's purely personal preference but I like longer books, ( think Robert Jordon, GRR Martin,David Weber) but while this book is 160 pages or so long at least they're being published very quickly so there isn't a years long wait for the next one :)
This is a very fast paced series that does not slow down at all. It is great action and sometimes you just wish the humans could catch a break, but not yet. Good characters that interact well with the story line so I will order the third book because now I'm hooked. This is a good series that is well worth reading.
Read and enjoy. I was reading what I thought was a chapter and you put the book down to drink my coffee and it was cold. I made a fresh coffee sat down and then got the shock I was half way through the book and not realized. Have a read and I wonder how far you get before you put it down lol.
A very entertaining read - full of action, adventure and suspense. The book left me wanting more there are seven people stuck on the space station surrounded by aliens. I still have not figured out the meaning of the Epilogue.
Looking forward to book three. This one did not disappoint. Lots of action. Aliens are a little predictable. Hero’s ... well, are getting into trouble. That’s about all I can say with out spoilers.
This is a short book. Picking up from where Lost Mission left off, it progresses the story of Ben Saito and associated characters a little further, but not at much as I'd hoped. And like Lost Mission, it ends abruptly, mid story. Characters and plot are well written, in an engaging style.
Well again a very interesting storyline plenty of action with some good banter. Slightly confusing dealing with the aliens lol but still enjoying the storyline looking forward to the next book
A roller coaster ride from start to finish, another great book by Joshua James and Daniel Young. If I see a book with either or both of their names on it then I know I am in for a good read. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series as they come out.
I couldn’t put it down! Ben Saito teams up with some shady characters to try to find his dad and stop the Oblivion cult and their shapeshifter alien friends from killing human kind. Lots of action! I will be reading the other books in this series.
