I pick up a copy of this book at a jumble sale for 25 pence. I buy almost every book see on writing. Most are much same with chapters on point of view, character development etc., etc.
Learning to write is a bit different. It is a text book intended for use in schools. Unfortunately this is its main weakness for the casual reader. A lot of the book assumes it is being read by a student, in a class with a teacher .I just skipped past the bits that seemed incomplete and needed a teacher or other students to work with. The other thing that is goes against it is the style of language is dated, originally published in 1939, so over eighty years old.
Putting all that to one side it is a very useful and instructive book. There are chapters on the usual things you would expect to find in English text book, Grammar, spelling and all the fundamentals of writing. The bulk of the book discusses the actual practice of creating good writing. How to constructing interesting and detailed paragraphs, writing strong, pleasing sentences and discussions on the different type’s narrative modes. There is a section pointing out the importance of the first draft and how it should be edited , corrected and worked on to produce the finished work. It might be my lack of a decent education, the reason I found the book so instructive. If you do find a copy, and you need to improve your writing skills, it could be valuable resource to the self-educator.
