Heaven refers to them as Misplaced Halos. Humans don’t even know they exist. This faction of celestial warriors was sent here under the cover of darkness to protect humanity from Lucifer’s demons. In return for their servitude, these warriors expect only one thing: the eternal love they were promised, what angels refer to as an amsouelot.
The first of his kind, Obsidian has spent the past fifteen hundred years fighting alongside his brothers, protecting humans from Lucifer’s demons, all while keeping to the shadows. Their mission is simple. Right up until it isn’t. The day Obsidian learns of a traitor in Heaven is the day everything changes. The entire reason for his existence is put on hold because there’s a new assignment: find the female whose soul belongs to his and protect her, no matter the cost.
Penelope Calazans spends her days sleeping and her nights serving free drinks to the gamblers looking to win big in Sin City. It’s not a glamorous life, perhaps a tad lonely, but she’s content. Or she thought she was. Then he appears. The mystery man who would turn out not to be a man at all, but rather an angel. The angel who would turn Penelope's mundane life upside down, revealing what really lurks in the dark.
Not only do they have to battle the demons looking to possess their souls, but Obsidian and Penelope must overcome the obstacles that come with falling in love. In the end, an angel and a human must make the ultimate sacrifice, all in the name of a love everlasting.
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Nicole Edwards spends her days stringing words together to make complete sentences. Sometimes not. Her best friend is coffee, and she has a love/hate relationship with sarcasm. She’s been accused of having a filthy imagination, which she admits is true.
Nicole lives in the suburbs of Austin, Texas. She proudly claims one husband, three grown children, and two bosses (better known as the dogs). When she isn’t writing, watching football or hockey, or keeping her bosses happy, you can probably find her with a book in hand.
I'm always a little apprehensive about authors switching genres but Nicole Edwards did a great job with her first dip into paranormal romance.
PROTECTED IN DARKNESS was very easy to fall into and feel as if I was a part of that world. Things aren't easy for Obsidian and Penelope but when Lucifer is after you how could they be. There were so many twists and turns, Nicole takes us on one heck of a ride with this first book of what looks to be an amazing series. I cannot wait to read the rest of the books!

5 Star review of Protected in Darkness (Misplaced Halos #1) by Nicole Edwards
Do you believe in Angels? I freely admit that paranormal stories are not one of my go to genres to read. However when I learnt that Nicole Edwards, an author I love, was writing paranormal series, I knew I had to read. I was intrigued as to how she would write this series and I was not disappointed.
I will be honest and admit I was a tad confused at first, but once I got my head around the terminology/names used I was well and truly drawn into the story that Ms.Edwards wove.
Obsidian is an angel but is known as a Misplaced Halo. They are not allowed to become involved with humans unless it is their soulmate, known as their amsouelot. They are there to protect humans from Lucifer’s demons.
When danger rears it’s head in Heaven, Obsidian must seek out his amsoulet, Penelope Calazans and protect her at all costs. Penelope is an empath who can feel others feelings. Although she does not get anything from Obsidian, it quickly becomes apparent that there is a strong bond between them. AS expected with a Nicole Edwards story, there was plenty of heat and some humour.
There were parts of this book where I struggled a little with some of the grittier descriptive scenes but they are pivotal to the story being told. If you are a fan of paranormal romance then this book will be right up your alley. Protected in Darkness is a well written love story about true soul mates that just happens to revolve around Angels and Demons.
“Once we do come to face-to-face with the one destined for us, the interactions are far more intense, a phenomenon that engulfs both souls, intertwining them, making it physically impossible to keep any sort of distance, both physically and emotionally. When we mate, we do so for eternity. Most importantly, without our amsouelot, we would have no reason to live. In essence, we would be nothing.”
Nicole Edwards is known for her scorching hot and boundary pushing romances. Her books are downright sinful and she isn’t afraid to pull out the stops. So, when I heard that Nicole Edwards was dipping her toes into the paranormal genre, I couldn’t wait to see what she would bring to the table. I’m happy to report that Nicole Edwards new series does not disappoint and will leave readers excited for more.
Protected in Darkness is the first book in the Misplaced Halos Series and it follows the story of Penelope and Obsidian. Obsidian is part of a Celestial Brotherhood and his mission is to protect humanity from Lucifer’s demons. In return for saving humanity, Obsidian is promised a soul mate. He longs for the day that his soul finds its missing piece. Obsidian’s mission was supposed to be simple, until Obsidian learns of a traitor in their mists. Obsidian has only one objective now: find his soul mate before the traitor is able to get his hands on her…..Penelope has always known that she was a little different. She can sense others emotions and at times, it can be really overwhelming. However, as time has gone by, she’s learned how to deal. Penelope spends her days in Sin City, serving drinks in a local casino. Penelope thought she was ok with the status quo, but the moment she encounters Obsidian, her entire world is turned upside down…..
Overall, I thought this book was an enjoyable read. I really enjoyed Obsidian and Penelope together. Their chemistry was instant and definitely a case of insta-love. That being said, when it comes to these two characters, it just worked for me. I loved the tension and the pull between them. I loved the idea of soul mates and fate and a pull that can’t be denied. I liked the world that the author created, giving us a little taste of heaven and hell and everything in between. It reminded me a lot of the Black Dagger Brotherhood Series and it would not surprise me one bit if I found out that this author was inspired by that series to write this book. The story felt familiar to me, yet different at the same time.
Protected in Darkness kicks off the Misplaced Halos Series to a really good start. The stage has been set and we have been introduced to a ton of characters, a few whom I’m hoping we’ll get to see more of. This story provides some good action, but is definitely a more romance based story. I’m looking forward to seeing this world expand and grow as the series goes on. I’m also looking forward to seeing more of these Celestial beings and seeing them all find their soulmates…..
*I was provided an ARC copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review*
What I love most about the settings and worlds created in the paranormal romance genre is their richness…their complexity…their contradictory qualities. And the backstory that’s required to be told in order to understand the diversity of the plot and to fully comprehend exactly what the heroes and heroines are up against when it comes to their fight against evil and darkness.
Celestial beings - angels and demons - have a volatile and complicated relationship - one that is about so much more than good vs. evil, light vs. dark. And because of how far back the war between them goes, vigilance has to be had by these angel warriors to ensure that Lucifer and his demons do not turn the world into one hellish playground of death and destruction.
In Nicole Edwards’ Protected in Darkness, she introduces readers to the protectors of mankind - Misplaced Halos - a group of angels who keep to the shadows in order to ensure humans don’t fall prey to the demons who want nothing more than to own each and every soul on this earth, to revel in the annihilation of the human race, shrouding the world in nothing but a devil’s playground.
The story’s hero, Obsidian, was the first Warrior Angel specifically created to protect humanity and, in return, he was promised his soul mate - the other half of all that he is. Obsidian is vigilant when it comes to what he was created for, but when he learns that there’s a traitor in the ranks, his duty to mankind becomes secondary to his need to find and protect his soul mate; the protection of many turns to the protection of one, and what that means for the world and for Obsidian and Penelope comes down to what these two are willing to sacrifice in order to keep Lucifer and his demons at bay.
It’s clear from their initial encounter that Obsidian and Penelope feel their connection to the depths of their beings and as they struggle to truly understand all the ways that their souls are intertwined and what that means for what they’re up against when it comes to Lucifer’s plan for mankind.
Nicole Edwards’ first foray into paranormal romance was everything I hoped it would be. Protected in Darkness exudes Edwards’ ability to create multifaceted characters and a story with multiple, interwoven plot lines that are complicated by things both in and out of the characters’ control. Every single aspect of this story worked for me and I can’t wait to see where Edwards takes these characters and this fight between good and evil, light and dark, angels and demons.
This is an erotic paranormal romance with fallen angels, fae, vampires, demons, and so much more goodness from the paranormal world mix in with human beings.
Obsidian and six other fallen angels are put on earth to help rescue humans from demons. They have been here for many, many years and the only reason they agreed to this arrangement was because they were promised their amsulot(soulmate) one day. Suddenly they get the message that the list with their amsulots names have been compromised and shown to the demons and now it is a race with time to find their amsulots and rescue them and the angels themselves from a life of torture. But are they able to find their amsulots in time with only a name to go with and will their amsulots say yes to everything they have to go through when they are found and will they believe what is going on?
Obsidian is the first to find his amsulot in a cocktail waitress in a casino in Las Vegas. Her name is Penelope and she has moved to Las Vegas to be closer to her brother who started seeing a woman who Penelope find mysterious and strange. Her brother has also changed to the worse since meeting this woman. When She meets Obsidian her whole world changes and a whole new reality opens up. But can she believe in Obsidian or is he too late to save her and himself?
I got sucked in by this book wright away and Nicole Edwards has the ability to capture your attention from the beginning. This is her first attempt at a erotic paranormal and I think she did an amazing job. I can’t wait to read about Eclipse and his amsulot in the next book.
I can definitely recommend this book if you love The Black Dagger Brotherhood, a lot of steamy times and a great new world that is being opened up to us.
Really truly love thia so far, I am always fascinated with angels, God and Lucifer. Every show, movie or book has a different take. Just love it. One thing though...there are WAAAAYYYYY too many people and names and group names so keep track. I find myself lost more than I understanding who is who.
I have been a fan of Nicole’s since 2012 and have every one of her books, but when I heard she was trying a new genre, paranormal, I was a bit skeptical. Paranormal was so different from her other books, and to write a book where are already fabulous authors out there who rock this subject, I just couldn’t understand why she wanted to go there. Boy oh boy, I am so glad she took this one, Nicole ROCKED IT! She caught me at the first few sentences and I could put it down. She even mentions the other amazing authors and gives them credit for writing those books in such a way that I was cheering out loud.
Obsidian and Penelope Calazans are fated to be each others perfect mate, but they have to meet, fall in love and go through a ceremony to seal their souls together for eternity. If that seems just a little bit challenging, I mean, finding your one perfect mate in the entire earth’s population, there are Lucifer’s demons out there trying to prevent this from ever happening.
If you are a fan of Sherrilyn Kenyon or J.R. Ward, then this is a new series you will love (and yes, Nicole mentions both authors in this book). It is about Angels, Demons, Vampires, Fey and Wares. It is different from other books you have read but absolutely real, and entertaining. Like I said, I couldn’t put it down and I don’t think you will be able to either.
Do you believe in angels? If you don't now you might after you read Nicole's new story.
Angels warriors exist to protect us from evil. We don't know who they are but we should be happy since they protect us when we need it. Lucifer likes to cause havoc on earth and it is up to the angel warriors to eliminate the demons.
This is Nicole 's first book in the paranormal genre and I have to say she should be proud of giving us a great story. To me this is original since it isn't anything I have read before. The characters are well written and you will be intrigued by their stories.
The archangel Michael gives the group some disturbing information and the warriors have to put aside everything else.
First up in this new series is Obsidian, he is the oldest warrior in the group. He must find his soul mate, Penelope, and make her fall in love with him before demons take her soul. If that happens Lucifer will also get Obsidian. God will not let that happen so both their lives are on the line.
Nicole gives us a love story wrapped up in a mesmerizing tale of good and bad. In the end of this story loved wins but what will happen in the next ones. I for one can't wait to find out. Received copy for an honest review
Let me first say paranormal is not normally a genre I read but after hearing one of my favourite authors announcing she was branching out I had to check it out ....wow is all I can say I was left speechless and I have to say if you are a lover of paranormal Protected in Darkness is a must read and if romance is your choice of reading then you will also want to one click this amazing love story. Great start to this new series by Nicole Edwards. She writes great contemporary. I just knew this was going to be just as wonderful. PNR is my go to genre. So I really had high expectations from this book. I was not disappointed.
Captivating & Fascinating PNR! Great Audible Listen🎧
Protected in Darkness Misplaced Halos, Book 1 By: Nicole Edwards Narrated by: Rich Miller
This book is awesome! Nicole Edwards is one of my favorite authors, I fell in love with her work and the Walkers several years ago. She is a gifted author who writes amazing erotic romance books and it is great to see another side of her writing and creative mind as she ventures into the fantasy and paranormal romance genre. And she does not disappoint I love the imaginative world she created as well as the imaginative characters in that world. I love the whole concept of Heaven’s “Misplaced Halos” celestial warriors protecting the humans from Lucifer’s demons, this band of warriors are Angels and answer to the Archangel Michael. There are seven warriors and each one was promised eternal love, a one and only, soulmate, which they refer to as an amsouelot. But when a traitor revealed info about the Angel’s Amsouelots to Lucifer the mission for the Misplaced Halos changes, they must find their soulmate before Lucifer does. This book focuses on Obsidian, he is the oldest of the Warriors and the other six look up to him and consider him their leader. He finds his Amsouelot in Vegas, just as one of Lucifer’s soldiers does too. Penelope is human, moved to Vegas to track her brother Oliver, she got a job at a casino and that is where Obsidian first meets her. Obsidian must convince Penelope she is his soulmate, he also needs convince her he is angel and she is in danger. She also learns her brother is involved with a women who is possessed by a Demon, Seraphina. She, see this when things start to happen in Vegas and she agrees to go to the safety of his home in Colorado. In addition to this storyline there are plenty more going on, there is great world building and a lot to learn of their culture, the other supernatural beings, ie FAE, Vampires, different types of demons, the hierarchy of the Heaven’s above as well as what goes on in their house, different types of servants and so forth. There is a lot to learn and the characters names and what they are are all unique and uncommon names, all is presented well and explained so it is easy to follow. There is never a dull moment in this book, there is plenty of drama, action, some angst, twists and turns, some thrilling suspense and some hot romance. Nicole Edwards, thank you for this fascinating story, I am looking forward to what comes next for the Misplaced Halos.
I listened to the Audible edition, Rich Miller is a terrific narrator and voice artist. He did a great job portraying the characters, bringing them to life, giving them their voices and personality. He set the perfect tone fo the story, captured and projected the characters emotions as well as the drama of the story into his performance. He is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for the great listen🎧
Thank you 🎧@AudiobookObsession #AudiobookObsession #AudiobookObsessionReviewer🎧
I have listened to a few of Nicole Edwards stories but it’s mostly more intense and more $exual . Once I saw the blurb I had to listen to it. In this one Nicole writes a great story full of fantasy but with romance in it. What happens when Angels shows themselves to the world . These Angels were sent on Earth to protect humans from the Dark Prince and his warriors. The Angels were promised to be rewarded once this mission is over and won . The hero is Obsidian . Heroine is Penelope. . They meet and things take off from there . How do the misplaced Angels fair .
Rich Miller performance was good. His voice is deep , smooth and strong. .
I love Nicole Edwards and all her books. I have to say that paranormal is not a genre l generally entertain but because she wrote it l decided to give it a try. I loved it. She does an excellent job of telling the story between good and evil using angels and demons.
In PROTECTED IN DARKNESS Lucifer is trying to take over the world by obtaining the angels (Obsidian) soulmate (Penelope). It depicts the battle Obsidian has in convincing Penelope she’s is soulmate while protecting her from Lucifer and his minions. With the help from his team and the other angels they continue the fight to protect humanity and their soulmates. I can’t wait to see how it all ends!!
The first book lays the ground work for the beginning of the Misplaced Halos Series. They are Angels here on Earth, to protect the Human race from the demons and Lucifer. Also, they are on the hunt for their fated human lover. If the demons. get to the Angels human mate, they will no longer exist. Obsidian is the first of the brothers to find his fated mate, Penelope. Their connection is electric, sexy and everlasting. This is a great start to this series! Rich Miller narration shows the love and emotions in this story. I enjoyed listening to this story. . 🎧audiobookobsessionreviewer🎧
Nicole Edwards is one of my favorite authors! I'm a paranormal fan (that's what got me into reading in the first place years ago) and this one is another amazing read to add to the list! So if paranormal is your thing, you must check out the Misplaced Halo series! I was hoooked from the get go and I love how Nicole put her own little twist on what a traditional angel is made out to be. This is a dark, romantic, amazing start.
Nicole Edwards is one of the authors that I wait with baited breath to read. Her new series Misplaced Halos is a different genre that Nicole usually writes but I must say she has leapt into the paranormal romance universe with an absolute fantastic start with Protected in Darkness. Penelope and Obsidian's story grabs you from the very start and just keeps you enthralled all the way. Cannot wait to see how the rest of the series goes.
I had to look twice at who the author was when I requested this book. Nicole Edwards has branched into PN with sexy, angels protecting humanity from Satan’s demons while looking for there life mates. Beware, This story is full of steam. Rich Miller did an excellent job narrating. 🎧Review for Audiobook Obsession 🎧
This is a very enjoyable storyline. I did get a bit lost in the beginning with all the different characters but it all fell into place as the book went on. Fantastic narration. #audiobookobsessionreviewer
OMG!! What an awesome start to a new series. Obsidian and Penelope were fantastic together and the story line grabs you from the beginning. I can't wait for the rest of the brothers stories, Nicole Edwards has an amazing series coming up if this story is any indication!
I really enjoy reading this book. I can't wait to find out what happens next. I will tell my friends about this author. Happy that in the end everything worked out for them
This is one of my favorite authors and I liked how she stepped out of her comfort zone and wrote PNR. This series introduces brothers that are “fallen” angels sent to earth to save the humans from demons. The brothers must find their soulmates before they are killed. This book follows Obsidian and his quest to find his soulmate and protect the humans. Penelope is destined to be with Obsidian she just doesn’t know it yet. He should take his time to introduce her to his world, but with Lucifer breathing down her neck, trying to eliminate her, it ups Obsidian’s timeline. Will he be able to protect her? I can’t wait for this series to continue!!
This has been a fun series so far. It ebbs and flows and some parts are tedious. But the world building is great and I can’t wait to see Khari and Bijou.
Very very different. Such an imagination. Very awesome! Heavenly creatures on Earth to help the Humans. Obsidian is a Warrior. Here on Earth to protect the Humans. Penelope is a Human in Vegas working as a waitress. When she meets Obsidian the attraction is instant. Little does she know there is a purpose to this meeting. Hopefully there will be time.
While Nicole Edwards is one of my top 5 favorite authors (the order is fluid and those top 5 shift as my mood changes and new books are released), this is her first foray into paranormal romance. Which is funny since she’s the one that got me back into the genre a couple years ago. Being a super-fan means I also subscribe to her newsletter and she sometimes tells us what she’s reading. She got me hooked on Rebecca Zanetti when I decided to give one of her recommendations a try. (There are also some paranormal books and authors in this story that I’ll be checking out as soon as possible.) I love this author’s writing style in her contemporary romance, so knew that wouldn’t be an issue here. But it remained to be seen if she could carry off the plot and world building of a paranormal story. She can and she does!
There are a lot of characters to meet in this book, but the story quickly zooms into our main subjects for this go around so as not to get too confusing. The reader needs to meet all of Obsidian’s “family” in order to understand the story, but it’s done in an organic way that makes sense and doesn’t overwhelm. Since Penelope is on the other end of the spectrum of friends and family, meaning she’s more of a loner, we get to know her through her interactions with coworkers, her inner dialogue, and her phone calls to her best friend in another state. I enjoyed getting to know Penelope in the context of her friendship with Winnie. Although it wasn’t face to face, the things they said and did while talking really gave me a feel for her character and endeared the character to me.
Obsidian and Penelope have great chemistry from the start. Things move fast, but I love a line later in the book about humans measuring depth of emotion on time and how time is irrelevant. How true that is! I enjoy that there chemistry is very sexual, but it’s also more. They spend time talking and getting to know one another and really connect emotionally and intellectually. Although it would be so much easier for Obsidian to do things another way, he attempts to ease Penelope into things instead of going all alpha on her and bulldozing into her life. He takes great care with her brother and best friend even though they complicate matters and it would be easier to push them to the side.
There’s a lot going on in this book in order for the author to build this world. There are unfamiliar words and customs. She does a beautiful job of keeping the confusion at bay. The words can be intuited from the text and things are explained in a way that is fluid and natural to the story. All the makings of an immersive paranormal romance series. (I have to note how much I love the title now that I’ve read the book, too.)
Now that I’ve had a taste of one of my favorite authors writing outside her usual genre, I’m ready for more. This one should satisfy Nicole Edwards’ fans and paranormal romance fans alike.

I have to say that I am not much of a paranormal reader. However if I am going to read one it will be by Nicole Edwards. I was not disappointed and I devoured this book actually. I thought that it was amazing and such a beautiful story. You need to be prepared to meet a lot of character's. This book is full of them. However it does just focus on the two main characters and I fell so in love with Obsidian and Penelope. These two have some of the most amazing chemistry. These two really take the time to talk and get to know each other and really have the most amazing connection. They way it really should be done by all of us. I too love how Obsidian is not an alpha male and he doesn't force her into doing thing his way. He eases her into this. Really they have one of the most amazing connections I have ever read about. There too are things going in this book that your not going to understand at first but Nicole Edwards has done an amazing job of explaining everything and how things in this book work. It is absolutely amazing and I loved it. I can not wait to see what we get next in this series. I fell so in love with this book.
I have read all of Nicole Edwards books and this was one of my absolute favorites. This new world she has created is amazing and all the characters are larger than life. The brothers that the world revolves around couldn’t be more different than one another yet you can also see that they will do anything for each other, all while giving one another endless amounts of grief about it. This first story is Obsidian’s who happens to be the oldest and leader of the group of what is called the misplaced halos, a group of warrior angels living on Earth to protect humans from demons. He and his brothers were content to live out their days ridding the Earth of demons until they found they now have a bigger mission. He needs to find his one true soul mate and protect her from the demons coming after her. All he has is her name and the fact that she lives in the United States, no problem, right? Penelope lives in Vegas after following her brother, the only family she is sort of close to out there. She works in a casino serving watered down drinks to tourists at night while trying to figure out what she wants to do with her life. As soon as she sees Obsidian, she feels an instant connection but cannot figure out why. She agrees to a date with him but feels like her feelings are too intense for having just met him and that things are moving way to fast. Obsidian needs to convince Penelope to go with him for her safety, but he wants and needs it to be her choice. She can tell he is keeping secrets from her and when she pushes him, he finally tells her everything. The question is will it be too much for her the angels, the demons, them being soul mates or will she stand by him through it all and come through it stronger together? I would highly recommend this book and cannot wait to see how the rest of the brother’s stories play out especially with the little glimpses we get into their searches throughout this book.
Protected in Darkness is Nicole Edwards' first paranormal! I love a good angel, demon, vampire romance and I believe Nicole did a fantastic job! I was pulled in from the very start and didn't want to stop reading until the very end. Every character is intriguing, with a story that begs to be told. It's a series, so I know we will get all the stories we crave. But first up is Obsidian and Penelope. He's the first Warrior Angel created and sent to Earth. His brothers have been created and they make up the Misplaced Halos. Lucifer is up to something and Obsidian and his brothers need to find their amsouelot, their soul mate. They always knew it was coming and now time is of the essence. Penelope has always been different. She's an empath and studied the supernatural and has a fascination with other worldly things and beings. When she first sees Obsidian, she's drawn to him but doesn’t know why. He wants to know her, protect her and eventually make her his for eternity. Penelope and Obsidian's need for each other heightens every minute. They need to join bodies and souls soon. Will Penelope and Obsidian be able to make the ultimate sacrifice? Wow, this book was great! It has all the things I love in a paranormal romance: Lust, need, angels, fairies, sexiness, humor, intensity, suspense and more sexiness! I'm already looking for the next book. I can't wait to see whose turn it is!
"And when you're not out looking for soul mates… When you said you worked protection, you meant on a grand scale, huh?" "Yes, I protect humanity from demons." "My dad warned me I'd meet some strange people in Vegas."
