These and a whole passel of other great tales of Western weirdness by Joe R. Lansdale, Mercedes Lackey, Jonathan Maberry, James A. Moore, Harry Turtledove, James Van Pelt, Ava Morgan, Sam Stone, Eytan Kollin, Julie Frost, Kim May, Irene Radford, David Boop, and Tex Thompson!
About prequel Straight Outta Tombstone:
“The authors were having fun. Even when they are not playing the stories for laughs, they are taking an opportunity to enjoy an opportunity to tell a story with a fresh twist, and expand out of their expected boundaries. Straight Outta Tombstone is a change-up pitch, which will leave readers laughing on occasion, spooked at times, and entertained throughout.”—The Galveston County Daily News

Short stories from 14 quality authors writing a mash-up of three of my favorite fiction genres (western, horror, and steampunk), 'Straight Outta Dodge City' delivers the goods in delicious bite-sized pieces. It was a good opportunity to become reacquainted with some veteran authors (such as Harry Turtledove) while enjoying the work of some newer ones (such as Kim May); their creativity, writing styles, and fresh takes on established tropes was satisfying. I an eager to dive into the others volumes of collected works...sidearms, zombies, and dirigibles; huzzah!
I was expecting a different anthology, having missed the first two. I was expecting more humor and more homage to westerns (not all the dime novels), less schlock, less horror. They are good writers. I found it to be off-putting that the editor edited with writers in mind rather than readers. While most writers read, most readers are not wanna-be authors, and you're correct, different standards. But when I spend money on a book, I'd rather the editor has readers as the end user in mind.
David Boop has brought together another group of authors who have western tales to tell. But these are not ordinary westerns! No, you have a Western that stars a dinosaur cowboy, a visit from the daughter H. G. Wells' time traveler, steampunk air travel, a voodoo train, and much more. The reader is likely to find several stories of interest in this tome. And if you like this volume, remember that there are two other anthologies that Boop has edited in this series!
Another anthology means another mixed bag of short stories, weird westerns being the theme this time around. The opening story by Joe Lansdale was the best of the bunch with the rest ranging from pretty good to meh. Unless you’re into this genre, I’d steer clear of this Dodge City. For fans of odd westerns only.
With a wide variety of tone and story, this collection of short stories was very fun to read. I loved most of them, struggled to finish a few but that wasn't a problem. All of the stories had an interesting take on the concept of 'weird wild west'. Greatly recommend to anyone who enjoys strange stories
This book is one of three the other two being Straight outta Dead wood. And straight outta Tombstone. Like the others it contains a mixture of Supernatural western stories with a twist on the tail.
Great collection of weird west stories curated by the estimable David Boop. Joe Lansdale, Jonathan Maberry and others give us glimpses of the dark, sometimes funny side of the Wild West. Highly recommended.
First rate collection of weird western stories. This is the third book in a series. I don't think it would matter much if one started with the first book or just dove straight into to this one.
Great stories and lot of fun. All story all well written and mixes fantasy with horror. Great authors, excellent storytelling. A great and fun read, highly recommended. Many thanks to the publisher and Edelweiss for this ARC, all opinions are mine
