The aliens who have been raising us humans for generations upon generations love to focus on developing and accentuating all the traits that Homo sapiens can express. And the man I've been locked in a cage with is an example of selective tampering at its most extreme. He's what we humans refer to as an 'Ornamental.' Keeper wants to pair us because he wants to replicate the looks of this male. There's just one problem. This man is angry and mean. And he's dead set against passing on his genes. But being denied isn't going to make Keeper very happy...
**Note: this is a Standalone 36K Short Story Science Fiction Romance. Unnatural Selection is set in the same universe as The Pet Project, but it doesn't reference any of the characters and can be enjoyed entirely by itself. This book is for readers 18 years and older. Contains explicit sexual situations. There is a light Reverse Harem set-up warning for those who don't want to read RH--and for those who do. Enjoy, my friends!♥
This book is fabulously unique. It is kinky and weird and so much fun to read. This is a story about aliens owning and breeding humans (to other humans).
✔️Reverse harem (but no group action) ✔️Unashamed M/F graphic sex ✔️Exhibitionist behavior ✔️Only human/human action, no aliens ✔️It’s a romance, just not a standard one ✔️Sweet hea ✔️Can be read as a standalone (but the others are good too)
*Original review* Imagine you own a few dogs that you like to breed occasionally. You treat them well, have beautiful, clean kennels for them to snuggle in at night. You check their family lines to make sure they come from good stock. You’ve trained them all to behave on walks and in front of company. You have a huge heart and unlike other dog breeders, you actually care how your pets feel. You keep a handful of their favorite treats just in case they need a little encouragement.
Now imagine this, you are the pet and you are owned by a very alien looking alien.
I absolutely love Avox, Tranq, Kory, Theresa and Keeper. How Amanda Milo created such fabulous character development in a story about human pets on an alien planet is beyond me. At just over 100 pages, it's a quick read.
*If you liked this one, you might also like, Beyond the Next Star by Melody Johnson. (Human pet/alien owner)
So messed up . . . and enjoyable! This one gave me low-key anxiety in the best possible way. I was so worried for Theresa and her family. I couldn't unglue myself from the pages. And in the end, I got such a satisfying ending.
Omg this was great!! It’s the perfect magical collision of brilliant execution meets seemingly crazy idea 😅
The whole time I kept thinking of the Victorians and their highly specialized cat and dog breeding like… yikes.
Somehow this author managed to craft an actual genuine, believable romance in somewhat bonkers yet fascinating circumstances. And was able to connect us to the romance between all 3 sets of partners. I loved that what the new male had been through was addressed , and the twist at the end about - so good. I was really glad to get that gem of a glimpse at things from “keeper’s” point of view (Keeleel) at the end, it really turned the whole thing on its ear in a way as you realize you’ve been attributing motive where maybe it was incorrect to do so.
I loved it, and I want more lol. Sometimes taking a chance can be surprisingly rewarding!!
*I'm really tired as it's 3AM, my grammar is probably shit, and I probably won't come back to correct it. Cheerio.
I think this one has the strongest ethical issues raised in the text of the 3 books in the series. On the one hand, I have a certain amount of "going with it"-ness I will allow here, because if we accept the terms of the world the book has set up, I think this is a story trying to explore what a romance or HEA could look like for the people who find themselves basically enslaved as pets. However, I think being in the human POV the whole time and experiencing their treatment as basically dogs... it's just hard for that to be very sexy. Interesting, yes, but I'm still not sure about these books as romances
Available via Kindle Unlimited Sequel to The Pet Project.
What an incredibly wonderful surprise! I really enjoy other books by Amanda Milo - so I grabbed this one thinking it would be in the same world as the Pet Project.
It’s a human to human romance in an alien world setting.
The aliens own and collect humans as pets. Like we do with cats, dogs etc. Breeders collect similar pets to breed characteristics or behaviors. Fighters, tame, albinos etc.
In this book, the friend of the alien owner from book 1 has his own collection of humans. One female & two males with three children between them. Happily sharing.
The alien brings home a new male. He is angry & bitter. A dog who bites its owners had a rough life.
Beautiful and sweet story with fun sex scenes. Great ‘pre-story’ after the end, followed by an epilogue 5 years after the fact, almost an HEA.
Warm fuzzies / Happy feels! Recommended as stand-alone or after book 1.
This book is based in the same “world” as The Pet Project, but with different characters. There’re also several differences. This keeper has two males, and a female living on his estate rather than in a facility. It’s narrated solely from the female’s POV, and the keeper and tenders have some communication. The biggest difference is the relationships between the tenders.
Theresa was first mated with Tranq, later Avox was introduced. She actively has sex (there’s TONS of smut in this one) with both at random ping-ponging back and forth, and has children with both. Although the men don’t seem super crazy about the setup, Theresa is totally cool with it and happy to be a breeder, and the three raise their children in a pseudo family unit. The Ornamental is brought to the estate so she can breed with him, but he’s not down with that. He’s been horribly abused, and pimped out as a “stud” since adolescence and is a bit savage. **Mild Spoilers**
I didn’t like this one as much for a few reasons. First, I felt there’re too many references to suggests that the humans were basically dogs. I know in my last review I said I identified the “keeper/tender” roles similar to a “human/dog” relationship, but I never felt like the humans were actual dogs. In this book, the imagery is pushed IMO so hard, that the tenders start to lose their humanity. A few examples… the Ornamental (Kory) actually calls them dogs… the collar/leash/treat concept has a much bigger presence… the keeper uses a “gentle leader’’ on Kory… the tenders growl/whine/bark. Even the fact that Theresa is a mindless sex crazed female totally willing/accepting to breed with whichever dude her keeper chooses felt “unhuman”.
Which was probably my bigger issue. I’m not opposed to a “poly” setup, but this was portrayed more like Theresa just hopping from man…to man… to man. Many times, within the same night… right after one finished…kissing with BJ breath. It read like three separate relationships, rather than one big happy family, and made the plot messy, because the main focus was on Kory trying to deal with his baggage, and his relationship with Theresa.
Bottom Line- I like books that allow damaged/imperfect individuals to heal, and I really loved watching Kory’s journey to happiness… BUT… I felt like the other men were unneeded, and IMO, only added for smut. They popped in for sexytime then faded… It cancelled out the thing I liked the most about the first book. (Humans still being "human" despite living in cages as pets...like "Pet" wanting to choose her mate rather than accepting the most fit male with the most breeding potential.) They aren’t even in the epilogue (only mentioned) that takes place 5 years in the future...BUT... if you're just in the mood for sci-fi smut... then this one is your book. 😁(all scenes are MF only)
This was one of the strangest and most surprising things I've stumbled into in my forays into the wilds of alien romance. You see alien captive romance and alien bride lotteries, alien reverse harems, dark aliens, alien warriors, alien protectors, alien rockstars, alien daddies, alien breeders. You name it there's a kink to couple with the alien.
What you don't see often is ... this. This was human captivity but the twist was that the alien wasn't a lover. Usually, the kidnapped/coerced/rescued/whatever is human while the alien is a big sexy monster beast with horns and fancy weens.
This was a very fresh take on alien romance by an author with intense sensitivity to developing trust between characters. Each and every plot point involved a chance for these characters to prove their inherent and undeniable decency to one another.
In this case, the aliens were breeders keeping humans as pets. But not in a kinky way. The aliens were benevolent, caring "keepers" who adored and trained their humans. And yes, they also bred them.
It was a short KU read, no-frills prose, with some surprising moments of tenderness on all fronts. From the main female character to her children, to her husbands, to her keeper, and to the new mean male brought in to breed with her (all under the kindly and protective watch of her caring keeper.) And all of it was mutual. Mostly everyone was quite kind and caring ... but let's not forget, we're talking about humans kept in cages, wearing leashes, given treats, petted and washed and trained, and generally being ... pets.
It had sort of an enemies-to-lovers thing going since the new man was unhappy with the notion of being forcibly bred. She was willing and liked her keeper.
Some of my favorite moments took place between the main character Teresa and her other ... husbands? Pets? I don't know what to call them. But one was bred to be docile and he had some badass moments of not being just docile, and the other one was bred to be a fighter and he landed some hilarious humor. The sex scenes were unique to me as well because it wasn't your typical RH where there's no jealousy, in this case there were moments where they didn't particularly want to share, but did so anyway. Honestly, it was a bunch of good people in a really bizarre situation.
I even teared up at the end. Just a little. The plight of the "mean" ornamental male brought in to breed just kinda got me somehow. There was something strangely parental about the keeper, which was confusing given all the breeding going on. But yeah. There we go.
It was a romance novel ... but it was also slightly something else. It was erotic too. But it was also the story of a man being tamed by an alien and a woman. I feel ... strange after reading.
This was interesting….I’m still in that foggy place where I’m not sure how I really feel about it. I don’t think this is really a romance…. But I don’t know what it was. If you find the premise intriguing by all means give it a try, I just don’t know how to wrap it up in a bow and hand to the proper audience
I cannot believe I read a Reverse Harem because I went into this read blindly and it worked so well I didn't mind??? Incredible!
I'm so glad I read this after my little reading pause cause with a book this good who wouldn't want to get back into reading? The plot was fucking bonkers let me warn you; imagine in a very-very distant future, human race doesn't live on earth anymore and they've evolved into a version of us that doesn't even recall earth as home, instead they live as alien pets or better worded Alien prized livestock!! Yuh you read that right! Humans are bred and shared between breeders to create cute little versions of offsprings suiting their tastes. My jaw was hanging open for a good while while reading the parallels of animal breeding as we know it and the world on this book.
I liked this book because the plot is very unique and I swear I haven't read anything similar anywhere, other books might use the idea of humans as alien race saviours but never humanxhuman relations for the aliens pleasure to just have pretty human pets 😢😢😢
The main alien in our book aka Keeper was a gentle breeder/guardian to the humans of this story and thank fuck for that cause I admit I could NOT handle reading about abuse with the way my mental health has been lately...
'Keeper' successfully bred FMC human woman with 2 human males (MMCs) and they had 3 daughters together and they were a happy bunch up until human male nr3 came along, Mr. Rabid pet smh, so yeah shit goes wild and then it calms down but we do have a HEA if you can call it one.
Very unique plotline, a few sex scenes in between the story going forward, as mentioned above it's a RH but there's no actual group action besides the FMC going from one partner to another afterwards. This is book 2 of a series but it can be read as a standalone and I did read it this way for my own ease.
Way out of the comfort zone for us. A story about a dog breeding program only then with aliens and the dogs are human. A Dark Romance in my opinion. People are being held in cages, groomed and pet. The are walked every day. Some romance and erotica, part half forced because it is a breeding program to het results certain treats the half human have to let that continue in the offspring. Like with we breed with dog breeds like spaniels and only continue with the smallest of the group or dogs bred for small noses. There are children involved only they will never be free like a dog kept by it's owner. Not really a good perspective if you ask me. Would have love to read that they got free. but alas
This story is with one female lead character and thee males. Although 2 of them are not happy with this setup and where unneeded for the overall story line and only added unnecessary sex scenes. They popped in for sexy-time then faded away for the story to continue with the 2 leads. The three children where 90% napping in the afternoon :)
I went into this story blind...I should have read the blurb. I'm not a fan of RHs, so that impacted my view of the story. But that aside, it actually was an oddly sweet love story. I was surprised at how much I actually enjoyed the story, considering that people were literally being treated like dogs-but in a good way?
I loved seeing the change in the 'Ornamental' and Teresa's relationship. I won't say too much more, I don't want to spoil any of it. But for not being a fan of RHs, I actually enjoyed this story.
I love the little humans. Ha! The only ask would be better understanding of size difference. Sometimes I picture the like Stuart Little. Sometimes dog/cat size? Didn't take away from my deep enjoyment of the book .
I Give this Book a 4.5/5 Star Rating, Listing as 4.
HEA(?): In it’s own way yes ☺️ Relationship Type: I personally would happily classify this a RH> Reverse Harem: FMMM Heat: 3.5/5, even though there isn’t as much heat, to me the concept and they way everything is honestly makes it even hotter 🥵 Pacing: Mid Romance: 4/5 Drama: 3/5 Suspense: 2.5-3/5
I seriously love every.single.thing. about this universe and it’s so insanely addictive! I need more books like this!
What a weird book. I don't mean "weird" as in wearing white after labor day, or dressing up in cosplay or singing karaoke in the middle of the office. It's the kind of weird where you wonder WTF has happened in a person's life to prompt them to write a disturbing tale about humans being kept as pets by aliens...and managing to create a positive, life affirming story that shows there's still goodness and light somewhere in the universe.
After "Stolen By an Alien", "Contagion", "Contaminated" and now this, I have officially fallen in love with Amanda Milo and I don't care who knows it.
Wow I have to say I reviewed this book when it first came out. I am still amazed by this world. I love the characters they were so well thought out and written beautifully. I have re-read this series quite a few times now and I highly recommend this series.
I honestly don’t know how to rate this book at all…I’m both “what the fuck did I just read” and “holy hell, this is something we should be talking about”
Sum: Humans are kept as pets by aliens dubbed “The Keepers”, humans are treated little more than dogs and prized with the many different type of “breeds” that aliens have been able to come up with. Speaking of, we follow our heroine, Theresa, while her keeper finds a new male for her to breed with. However this new male is violent, angry and defiant. Not something Therese’s is used to being around she is scared of the male and scared of what the disappointment of not breeding him will bring to her Keeper.
Okay so this shit is sooooooo fucking messed up, but in a way that really makes you think. It’s completely in line with what the government is attempting to do currently with women’s bodies.
So humans are kept as pets, certain breeding goes a long way to make specific physical traits or overall specific demeanors.
Therese’s has already been bred with a fighter breed (Avox), whose she has two daughters with. Then her docile male (Tranq) who was bred for his immense calmness despite any situation, whom she has one other daughter with.
A new male (later called Kory) is brought in, it appears his breed were incest bred for caveman-like looks.
Theresa is forced to breed (to a point), her keeper is much kinder than most and strongly has her and her children’s best interest at heart…still, this new aggressive and interesting looking male has been locked down with for breeding purposes.
Although he is aggressive because he doesn’t want to continue his blood line, knowing it’s painful both physical and emotionally. However, he can’t seem to always resist Reasa (as he affectionately calls her), for very long, especially not when she is asked to breed with Tranq right in front of him for the purpose of making him territorial and want to finally “spill his seed in her”.
This is a perfect book for book clubs or even as a thought point in an academic paper based off of the idea on it alone. It’s thought provoking and well written.
Amanda never ceases to amaze me but this book truly blew me away with its derivative and deeply taboo wording and story build. Bra-fucking-vo
Overall? 4.5 ⭐️s Plot? 5 💭s (so provocative 🧐) Spice? 3 🌶s - I say this because this isn’t really the type of book where you actually want the sex to happen because you know what it means, however the scenes were well written, despite the obvious voyuerism Char Dev? 4 for Theresa 👩, 5 for Kory 👨, 4 for Avox 👨, 5 for Tranq 👨, and 4.5 for Keeper 👽 Cheating? No…slightly forced RH but no real cheating I guess HEA? …I really don’t know how to answer this? Book wise sure…but deep thinking and human feeling wise? To me, no. Fave Char? Tranq - while he was bred for docile and was as such, he also showed that did not mean he was weak. Series? Yes but can be read as a stand-alone Tropes? aliens pet, mates, dystopian quality Triggers? YES 🚩🚩🚩 where the fuck do I even start? Contains the following: slavery, forced mating, inbreeding, human stock, beating, abuse, rape, violence, language and probably more, just be really careful. Marked NOT SAFE 🔴

I loooved this! Again, thank you taramisu for reccing Amanda Milo!
Theresa. FMC. Mother of three wily girls. Mate of a Gentle-male (Tranq) and a fighter male (Avox), and she loves them and they love her (no MM). Well adjusted and well looked after by Keeper. Names Kory “Kory”. Comfortable in her body.
Kory. MMC. Ornamental human. Has sired dozens of children he never met. Crude. Angry. Hurting. Bestial. Asshole. Softy for kids. Realizes he’s wrong and wants to make amends. Rad dad. He’s schweet.
This was a book that is far into the days where humans have been captured as a species and bred by aliens. We’re focused on this current species of aliens that humans called Whistlers, because they whistle their noises, meaning they can’t understand “human humming”.
Theresa and Kory are set to be mated, by Keeper. Theresa has never known life outside of two places, and Keeper makes an effort to keep her, Tranq, Avox, and their daughters happy, healthy, and treated not as pets but extensions of his family, even if Tranq and Avox have leashes and cages.
Kory is a rude motherfucker, but this tethers to his mistreatment by many many people. Being forced away from his mother, being a stud, never meeting his children, constant abuse from previous owners—he’s done with it. And seeing Theresa, in his point of view, is seeing someone who threw away her identity as a human to be a Whistler’s pet.
As Kory stays on Keeper’s property, however, he gradually learns how different it is. Keeper is endlessly patient and very mindful of Theresa, the men, and the daughters. Rather than punishments for them, he does give them stern talking-tos. He’s more than happy when the girls whistle and learn his language, and he communicates to them like they’re people, caring for them when they’re sick, and such.
This doesn’t detract from the fear that the humans sometimes have with Keeper. He is still their owner. He’s still treating them like dogs to breed and tame and give treats to. He’s capable of selling them off. He won’t. But how would we fully comprehend that?
In time, Kory redeems himself when he sees how hurt Theresa is from his actions and words. He redeems himself to Avox and Tranq as well, but the girls love him. And he loves them—and his son.
Who may or may not love JoAynn’s daughter 😏
This was a great sci fi book!
WHAT WOULD HAVE MADE ME GIVE IT A 5 STAR
✨ More Kory bonding platonically with Avox and Tranq. I think Kory would’ve liked the fighting rings Avox goes to. But I wanted to see more masc friendship.
✨ While I understand why a non-linear story may work, I wish it had been linear. The flashback stories, to me, didn’t really reveal much how they were placed.
✨ A bit more individual time with Theresa and Avos and Theresa and Tranq. They both had unique dynamics with her. I wish we saw how they came to be
✨ A bit more why choose. We see Kory and Theresa together at the end. I wish we saw how all four of them act together as an adult unit.
This was still an excellent book 🫶🏾

For the Sociology more than any spice (and there was salacious, voyeuristic spice) this book was intense - I might have preferred the scientific cold view from the first installment. It is an uncomfortable book, a study of human nature a century or so after capture and domestication. Is it easier to concede and become pet and if you are born pet would you even be aware of a different kind of existence? I ended up loving it.
What an interesting study of an existential crisis. A what if pets like dogs suddenly gained self-awareness and hated what they were in comparison to their wolf ancestors who would have ripped us to shreds instead of rolling for bellyrubs.
Plot/Storyline/Themes: Good lord the humans are literal alien pets descended from that first study group in book 1. Self-awareness of the descendants of abducted and farmed humans. Would we feel oppressed if we were born into it or would our awareness be restricted to petlike and understanding and subsequently blind loyalty and joy? Would we be the dogs of space?
Character Development/Favorite Character: Yeah my favorite character was the Whistler aka Keeper actually named Kedeel. The introduction of the Ornamental/Embellished Human into this herd is so precarious and rife with conflict because he is so acutely self-aware and infinitely pissed off.
Favorite/Curious/Ludicrous/Unique Scene:: The Whistler Keeper is truly a secret anthropologist at heart: He makes the entire herd of humans work together. The established males Tranq and Avoc see and have to dig and work with the Ornamental/Kory. Also, removing that lush green barrier to take away the division between the established herd and the "outsider" Kory. Favorite/Curious/Ludicrous/Unique Quotes: 🖤 “I’ve been studded out since the day I was old enough to ejaculate viable semen. Do you want to know how many children I’ve cursed to being born a freak?”(well, this is Tragic, basically a Human French Bulldog) 🖤 “My line isn’t special because of any certain way our bodies are formed, but because we’re the small remaining line of wild-bred humans.”(Holy canoli ...WTF) 🖤 “I have to wonder if I’m really the best female to pair him with. I’m too normal to correct the gap in his humanity”(Theresa on Kory) Favorite/Curious/Ludicrous/Unique Concepts: ■ Whistlers ■Gazebo-like cages/stud -pens with...water features? ■Human Breeds: Ornamentals, Gentles, Rager etc. Basically Frenchies, Golden Retrievers, Pitbuls

As mentioned in my review of the previous book, I have often wondered what would be the case if we were the pet to a far more advanced species. My concepts are pretty dark and early in process rather than what Ms. Milo has created in her Pet Project series. I was wondering about some other thoughts... but she certainly addressed them in her second book: Unnatural Selection. Without giving away spoilers, I loved it. This is definitely a different sort of reversed harem-type of story, but then again, I find practically all I've read to be very unrealistic. In this situation i.e., Unnatural Selection), I find the circumstances quite realistic.
I appreciate Ms. Milo's attempts at decent character development for the length of story she's written. Though I would have liked to have learned more about Avox and Tranq, their involvement isn't as important to the story as it is for Kory and Theresa (or Fee-Bee which is her "alien" name). By the end of the book, I was hooked and entranced, enough to get a little emotional at the very end. (No, you'll just have to read it because I promised no spoilers!) And her children are so delightful, it makes me wonder how I would be as a Keeper.
Makes you wonder if this situation hasn't already been happening all along already.
Though it is a stand-alone, I do believe that you really need to read Book 1 in order to understand some of the nuances present. I also wish it could be longer because I was getting to enjoy the new dynamics between Kory and Theresa, and now the end of the book is here! No, the end wasn't rushed. I only wished more could had been done.
Do I recommend reading this book? Hell, yeah! Get the entire series, and don't cheapen out by KU'ing the series. This series is worth the investment!
Man there is just something weirdly fascinating about seeing aliens caring for humans like we care for our pets....
If you are looking for something that is definitely unlike other Scifi romances out there, look no further baby.
Milo is able to create an atmosphere where you feel relatively unsure. And I mean that in the most endearing way possible (if that can be said endearingly, that is). Humans have become pets to alien species, but there is vague details to what happened exactly to lead humans to where they exist now.
Did something happen to Earth? Was their an invasion? Was their a war? What WHat WHAt WHAT?
It's an interesting approach to immediately jump into a story like this; where humans are pets and are trying to be bred and kept like exotic animals. I love getting to see the h's relationships and bonds forming with her males, and also the input-output between her owner as well. I really enjoyed the idea of their 'owner' being a fair and caring.
Overall, this is an awesome idea for a story and if you are looking to read a scfi romance that sits in a category of it's own, then here ya are.
And for those of you saying, "but what about the steam?" Don't you fret Boo. This definitely receives the STEAM heat seal of Approval.
For all I've loved previous books by AM in the past, I wasn't sure if this scenario was going to work for me. Humans in captivity can be hit or miss (for me!) and...well, it's been a weird 12 months. No worries, however, AM's streak of books that entertain and delight (and sometimes make me tear up, but that's another story!) is still going strong because DANG did I end up enjoying this one!
So. Humans as pets. Some get owners who love them and treat them as family and some get not-so-nice ones that rent out their stud abilities and treat their pets like absolute garbage.
Theresa is one of the lucky ones. She has a kind owner and a good life. She has two men who are devoted to her and several kiddos she loves very much. She's safe and kept from harm in her family enclave and she's genuinely happy with her life.
The newest human who's brought in is...not as happy. He's mean and aggressive and verbally lashes out. It takes time and patience (on both Theresa and the Keeper's part) before he begins to respond to any kindness without cruelty.
I honestly wasn't sure if I was going to like this setup, but (like I said) it WORKED for me. There was a lot going on here and I liked it!
Ok, então... achei esse mais pesado. Tenso é a palavra certa.
E as filhas.
At first I wasn't really sure what to put for a rating but I really enjoyed the story its actually very different from the usual stories ive read in the genre. Its different in the sense when the humans are held captive they find a way to be free. In this one they stay pretty much like pets. At first I wasn't sure how i felt about that but I actually didn't mind it some much. I also wasnt sure about how I felt about the relationship they had with the alien they call Keeper especially sense he was around during some of the makings or "encounters" but it wasn't like he was being a voyer or it in some way being serial it was more like he was watching over them to make sure they are okay. Again at first i wasn't sure if i liked it but in the end didn't mind it so much. This romance while centered on Theresa and Kory its more of a triad romance. I really like Tranq and Avox they both bring a good blend to the relationship. I'm trying not to give to much away and ruin the story but I know some people like certain things and adding more people into the couple isn't always their cup of tea. I know i would want to know.
Over all it is a really good story definitely a new concept for me but I enjoyed it.

“Dog is a stupid word to use as an insult, you know.” “A dog would think that.”
The Whistlers are an alien race who have removed the humans from Earth and transported them back to their own home planet.
Theresa has three children, and she must breed with Kory to produce another.
Theresa sees the aliens as benevolent, and accepts the status quo. Kory does not.
Avox and Tranq are the two fathers of Theresa’s children. They all live together, mostly harmoniously, in Keeper’s menagerie.
Nice verbal sparring between Kory and Theresa.
Designer humans. Forced breeding. Herds. Captivity. The treats, the petting, the walks, the pens, the leashes, the collars, the shocks, the torture…
“Yes? Humans used to live in houses too you know. They would have had to train themselves.” “‘They?’ Did you just refer to your own species as ‘they?’”
Giving the alien, Keedeel, a POV chapter is…dark AF.
The ending is a small bright spot in a very bleak landscape.
Very unusual and very disturbing. Poly books can be a tough sell for me, but the bigger issue here is the people’s subjugation.
This is what Trent Reznor had in mind when he wrote “Happiness In Slavery” for Nine Inch Nails.
“They’ll never stop using me. Do you know that? I’m ‘special.’ They will use me and use me until the day they can’t possibly use me anymore.”
Holy hell what else can I say but that I LOVED this book. Like absolutely loved everything about it. I didn't actually think anything could beat the first installment of this universe but fuck was I wrong.
So many aspects of the dynamics between pet and Keepers has been so well thought out. I loved the authenticity of character behaviors and reactions. The natural transitions of Theresa and Kory's interactions as they gradually went from outright hostility and slowly melted down into the most wholesome mold of tender affection and love.
And lawd, I love the wholesome lets-get-to-know-each-other bit, don't get me wrong, but the fucking steam lvl... dearest author knows how to write some smutt even when its done through the bars of a cage and our beloved alien Keeper is right there watching the whole thing LMAO
Let's just say that by the end of this story I was belly up, neck offered for a collar, begging for my own Keeper to give me head scritches, comforting hugs, some treats, and maaayybbbeee a few males to claim as my own for all my good behavior <3
I really liked the emotional payoff in this book. The hero is an "Ornamental" a pet human who has been bred to have distinctive traits. He calls himself a freak and thinks he is ugly. The heroine does not think he is physically ugly but he is emotionally traumatized and is very mean to her at first.
SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
Heroine's alien owner is obviously trying to get her to have a kid with the hero. She does not want to and makes her feelings clear.
Her owner then starts taking them for walks together and using other strategies to get them to like each other. It works.
However, the heroine already has two males and kids with both males living with her in her family unit. So the hero refuses to be with her because he says once she is pregnant he will be sold again.
They both fall in love anyway and get a happy ever after. We also get a very cute epilogue set years into the future seeing her and her 3 men live happily ever after along with all of their kids.
The world in which this story play was weird (exclamation mark!) and made one so uncomfortable. Humans living in cages, being pets to aliens and being bred for certain traits is very messed up (as it is with animals). I was curious about how the character's would be saved, but that wasn't what happened at all. And surprisingly that didn't make me stop reading it, because between the lines you could very much read that the alien's world is on it's way to better treatment of the humans and the humans in the story were happy. There were some instances, in which you were very much uncomfortable though, e.g. the moments when the humans were having sex and the alien was watching to make sure the FMC wouldn't be hurt or raped and when the alien touched one of them during sex to make them leave. Verrrry uncomfortable. But all in all the story was wholesome and the ending was very sweet.
