He's everything she fears…
Colt Evans didn’t choose to be a gunfighter. When he’s injured in a shootout and stumbles onto a remote homestead, he didn’t expect to find compassion. But beautiful Amelia McCollister is like no other woman. Colt finds his dream of settling down with a wife and home is within his reach—but only if his past doesn’t come gunning for him. Maybe, a shootist can hang up the hardware.

She's everything he dreams of…
After outlaws murdered her parents, Amelia was left to raise her siblings alone. With a young brother who idolizes shootists, and a little sister traumatized by the ordeal of witnessing their parents’ murder, Amelia dreads having a notorious gunman in her home. But as Colt slowly recovers, he reveals a caring nature under his tough exterior that Amelia can't resist. She believes Colt can leave his past in yesterday.

Just when Colt starts to hope he can leave the gunfighter life behind, his past returns, bringing danger to them all. Will their dreams disappear in the smoke of a desperado's gun?

This was a good read. I found it a little slow in some parts and I kept wondering when something was going to happen. The action parts were well written though.

The hero, Colt, was great. He was gunfighter who showed up hurt on Amelia's farm. She nursed him back to health an along the way we got to see a softer side of him that was swoon worthy. The scene where he told Jenny about his dreams had tears in my eyes.

Amelia came across as immature at times. That could be due to the fact that he parents had sheltered her and her dad kind of scared off potential suitors cause he was a preacher. Amelia was also strong. She had to step up and care for her younger siblings after her parents were killed.

All in all, not a bad way to spend a Sunday.

It started off well, but became a little boring for me. I didn't feel much chemistry between Amy and Colt and thought the basis for Colt thinking they couldn't be together was weak. I understand that he had a past that he feared would catch up with him, but Amy's father was right there as an example of how escaping the life of a gunfighter was possible and I didn't understand why they didn't just follow it. It was so obvious and they could have saved themselves about 100 pages of heartache.

“The Devil’s Own Desperado” by Linda J. Cox was a really good book. I thought it might be just a bit sappy before I got into it, but I was mistaken. Amelia (Amy) and her brother Saul and sister Jenny were living alone on the Wyoming frontier when Colt Evans, a shootist, literally stumbles upon their cabin, shot and in need of help. Amelia, Saul and Jenny have been left as orphans because of the shooting death of their parents. Amelia is determined to see that Colt lives and nurses him back to health against the admonitions of the doctor and the Marshall of the town. Colt does not want to bring problems to these people, and tries to leave, but his injuries force him to stay. The longer he is with them, the more he cares about what happens to Amelia. He becomes a surrogate father to Saul and helps Jenny to trust.

When bad men find him and cause harm to Amy, Colt decides to leave even though he and Amy have found love. Amy does not want him to leave and is willing to pull up stakes and move with him somewhere that gunmen won’t know who Colt is and where they will be safe. Because he loves this family so much, Colt leaves them in safety.
A year passes and Colt is set upon and ambushed by gunmen intent on his death. He is shot, but finds his way back to the McCollister farm, where he is tended again by Amy and her brother and sister. You will like this story of Colt and Amy. It is a sweet romance and one that I very much enjoyed.

I received a free Kindle copy of this book for my honest review from the publisher. The opinions expressed here are my own.

No matter if it's 2016 or 1887, you never can escape your past. Some how, some way, it will rear its ugly head. In Colt Evan's case, his past brought danger in the regards to gun-toting men looking to settle a score.

As you can imagine, with any good historical tale, there instances where men drew guns. One at a card game (beginning of the book) and another towards the end of the book (where past meets present). In both instances, Colt survived both battles. Sure, he might've sustained some damage but I didn't really expect him to come away unscathed. You wouldn't either, right?

Even though this book some tension filled sections, the rest of the story was mostly filled with tender moments. Amelia and Colt's stolen kisses and lovemaking could only be described as sweet.

Jenny, Amelia's sister, was so dang cute. I loved it when she smiled and, as a parent, it tugged on my heart to see her afraid. There was one scene, with her, that reminded me of an unforgettable moment in The Patriot (2000). I'm speaking of tear-jerker involving Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) and his daughter, Susan (Skye McCole Bartusiak). For those who've seen the hit movie, I think you know which scene I'm thinking about and can get a rough idea where I'm heading with my vague remarks regarding Jenny.

As for Saul, you can tell he's going to grow up to be a fine gentlemen because he's already a sweet young man.

The past can come back to haunt you.

Colt Evans was wounded in a fight and while running away stumbles upon a remote homestead owned by Amelia. Amelia is wary of this man, but something about him keeps drawing her in. As Colt gets to know more about Amelia the more he wants to stay, but can a gunfighter ever truly put up his guns?

This is a beautiful story about acceptance and changing for the better. It was very well written with a decent pace. There was plenty of action while still allowing readers to get to know more about each character and how they came to be where they are.

Colt is a rugged and somewhat gruff man who isn't used to kindness. I liked getting to know more about him and his true nature. Beneath his rough exterior he truly is a good hearted man who only longs for a true family and a peaceful life, but his choices haven't been the best ones and they are preventing him from having that.

Amelia is a strong woman, but she also has a generous heart. She fears Colt at first, but soon learns that there is more to him than meets the eye. Despite her misgivings, Amelia slowly but surely falls in love with Colt and hopes it will be enough. She was a wonderful character and one I could definitely see becoming friends with.

This is a story of becoming better than who you used to be, not letting bad decisions rule your life, and giving love a chance.

I found "The Devil's Own Desperado" to be a smooth read, easily transitioning the reader from beginning to end. This story of a glorified gunslinger contains all of the expected elements, yet takes on a new twist. The female character has a history with a gunman, her own father, which colors the way she sees Colt, the wounded man who unexpectedly turns her world upside down. Although everyone else sees him as trouble, Amelia knows that there is hope that he can turn his life around. On the surface, it appears that Colt keeps rescuing her from difficult situations, but it is Amelia who is doing the rescuing, saving Colt from complete self-destruction. The historical references are spot on, describing the territory in such detail that the reader is transported temporarily to another place and time. Ms. Cox has truly done her homework to create this visual experience for the reader. Yes, it's about life, love and redemption, but the presentation is refreshing.

Love this book!!

This is a beautiful story of finding ones way, discovering that a dream can come true if you just don't give up. Colt is trying to overcome a reputation that is out of proportion with facts. Amelia is working to raise her brother and sister after her parents are killed. They are like two lost souls , that must learn to trust and believe In themselves and each other. Together they become one filled with love. Great book , don't pass it up.

As an author myself, I'm always trying to read other writers’ work. You can learn something from everyone--whether they're a strong writer, or a not-so-strong writer. However, I have to limit my reading time so I can have writing time and take care of other responsibilities. Having said that, I had to read Lynda J. Cox's A LONG WAY FROM YESTERDAY until it was finished. To heck with time limits! It is an extremely compelling read. If something did pull me away, I was still thinking about the predicaments described in the story.

Lynda Cox draws great characters, people the reader can recognize and sympathize with, and who act consistently throughout the book. I really loved Colt, and the way he was both deadly and vulnerable. His interactions with the children--Saul and Jenny--and even with Amelia, were heartwarming, while he was still able to keep the edginess expected in a gunfighter. The plot was solid and kept me guessing.

On top of all that, Lynda J. Cox uses words in an original and beautiful way, as seen in passages like this: “Even the birds were silent in the heat of the afternoon and the breeze could have been straight from the mouth of a foundry.” Or, “His dark chuckle escorted her through the doorway.” I also admired the way she stretched out a tense moment with the details in this description: “In the moment of silence between the two men, a meadowlark near the house trilled liquid notes from the tall grasses bending in the face of the breeze. Captain crowed from his post on the fence. Taylor’s horse shook his head, the bit jangling.”

I could go on, because I highlighted several other passages, but I want you to get A LONG WAY FROM YESTERDAY and I don’t want to give it all away. I’m looking forward to reading more of Lynda J. Cox’s work.

Colt is a gambler and gunfighter that is tired of his career. But it’s not one you can just walk away from. Not alive anyways. One day his playing poker a young man approaches him and shoots him. Colt gets shot o also and gets on his horse and leaves town. He ends up at Amelia’s where she is raising her younger brother and sister after her mother and father were killed.
This story reminded me a lot of a Hallmark movie. There was the basic story line of the young woman raising children on her own, the gunfighter turning up on her land and they form a bond. I loved all the characters. I loved the conflict in Colt wanting to love Amelia and put his past behind him but knowing he is dangerous to her and the kids. I loved Saul the younger brother that wants to be infamous and revenge his mother and fathers deaths. I loved Amelia and her resolve in taking care of her younger siblings and the wounded stranger. Of course who wouldn’t love poor Jenny?
I found this story riveting and breathtaking form the action to the sex
Recommendations: I highly recommend this story to anyone that likes longer stories full of action and romance, especially if you like old west westerns, gunfighters, true love, and hot sex this one is for you!

Could Not put it down!

This story is absolutely wonderful. I literally read it all at once in an afternoon because the hero and heroine were both amazing, and the two children were written so well and each of them played a major role in the story. The story of a gunfighter falling for the girl he had always dreamed of but never thought he could have is my favorite type of story, and the twists and turns and the needs of the children made it that much better. Lynda's writing is some of the best I have read. I loved the snippets of real history she added about how things were done back then, and the realism about everything in the book. I learned several interesting bits of history I had never really thought about, and I was a history major and US history high school teacher. I also do a lot of research about this era because of my own writing. I love finding new great authors, and Lynda J. Cox is one of the best. I look forward to reading her other books. The sad part is that I really didn't want this story to end!

In this epic tale, Colt Evans ( a shootist) has found himself on the receiving end of a bullet. He stumbles out of the Saloon, mounts his horse, and ends up on Amelia McCollister farm barely alive. Amelia and her siblings take him in to try and save his life. Colt wants to leave his past behind and settle down with a family, but he gives up on that dream knowing someone will come to seek revenge. Will Amelia and Colt be able to bond and have a relationship or will his past come back to haunt him? You must read this tale to find out.

Ms. Cox writes a book that is so engaging and compelling. Her characters are well drawn and it’s clear as to the roles they play. Ms. Cox brings her readers into the mind, body, and soul of each character. Her plot is engaging. The dialogue is witty, funny, and sometimes infuriating. Her scenery is beautifully depicted. This book had me glued to my chair right up to the fantastic conclusion.

Well Done.

Lynda J Cox writes her stories and takes you back like you are there. I love a bad ass gunman romance. Colt Evans is the shootist / gunman and to me a survivalist. Having to fend for himself at the age of 13 years old and taught by a mean ole' stepfather to aim and aim good before you shoot, he has managed to gain a reputation as a fast draw killer. Colt gets wounded and ends up at the homestead of Amelia McCollister and her siblings Jenny and Saul. Amelia nurses the handsome gunman and finds she is seeing the soft layers of this shootist. Amelia soon sees that her dreams can be fulfilled and Colt is in those dreams. This was a well written story and if you like westerns, this is it.

This is a wonderful story of redemption and second chances; my favorite tropes. After reading the first few paragraphs, I knew instantly that I had to read this book. Ms. Cox has a delightful voice that paints a setting in your head and her story delivers in spades! I highly recommend.

Colt is a bad guy—a dark and brooding shootist hiding a sensitive side. Hunted and weary of killing, he’s sheltering a secret desire for a real life. None of that matters when your life’s blood is draining out of you. Finally, he was too slow.

Well-mannered, lady-like Amelia is weary, too. After the death of her parents forced her into a parental role, she’s become isolated, lonely, and too busy raising her siblings to notice. When a comatose, dangerous looking man near to death tumbles from his horse into her bean patch, she can do nothing less than her Christian duty.

A sweet romance set in the old West. The western setting is masterly described transporting the reader to the Wyoming territory-the landscape, saloons, poker playing, the lawlessness, the food, the chores- all brilliant. Colt is a gunfighter whose reputation proceeds him. Injured in a saloon shooting he stumbles upon Amelia's homestead. Amelia is an innocent young woman raising her younger brother and sister. Instead of turning away this stranger she nurses him back to health. Soon there is a deep attraction between the two, although Colt knows he is putting them all in danger. The West is a place for dreams and a place where you can start a new life- can this be the place where Colt finds his dreams with Amelia? A story of new beginnings and loves triumph.

I really liked this story of a gun slinger who's violent path leads him to love and redemption. It made me think about all of those famous/infamous gun slinger's of the 19th century old west. Did they to wish to be redeemed by love, would they have been if they met a wonderful innocent woman who tended to their wounds and heart? Were they all thrust into this life the way the H of this story was or were they just trying to go down in history as the fasted hand in the West? The H of this story is wounded not only in body but in his heart and soul and the h nurses all of them. She makes him want what he never thought he could have a home and love. It is wonderful to see their relationship develop slowly and lovingly. What this story lacks in steam it more than makes up for in heart.

This story reminded me of an old western on TV with more steamy scenes and I enjoyed it. I liked the setting and the atmosphere. There were times when it was a bit too slow for me, but the story line kept me turning the pages, wanting to see what happens. This is an action story with romance and a bit of mystery. I think the author did a great job of developing the characters, I really loved Colt. Amy was both a joy to read and slightly frustrating but I think that that was part of her character development and worked for the story. I liked that her father was a sound mind in the story. The sister was another fun part of the story and I liked the card games (think Maverick the movie).

I didn't really know what to expect when I started this book, but this might be my favorite book I've read in awhile. I enjoyed the main characters and never had an overwhelming urge to shake some sense into them. I love heros with a hard outside and soft center, and this delivered. Colt was a good man. I loved with relationship with Amy. I enjoyed his interactions with Saul. But my favorite was his relationship with Jenny. I don't read a lot of westerns, but I saw a little house on the prairie rerun for the first time as an adult and Michael Landon inspired me to read something a little more rustic. Overall, I really enjoyed this.

"The Devil's Own Desperado" was a well written book that grabbed my attention from page one until the end. This book had everything I want in a novel - adventure, romance and a cast of characters that were believable and easy to fall in love with. I liked the fact characters from "Smolder on a Slow Burn" were in this book. I realize "The Devil's Own Desperado" was written before "Smolder on a Slow Burn", however Harrison Taylor is still a character I can't warm to although he does have some redeeming qualities.

I highly recommend this book.

Really enjoyed Colt and Amelia's adventures! Their interactions brought a smile to my face and an extra beat to my heart. A swoony, sexy hero, strong heroine, good writing, intriguing conflict, satisfying resolution, some really terrific lines and snappy dialog. A fun and engaging read, definitely recommended for lovers of historical westerns in particular, and romance and fans of a good story in general!

This was a great little Western Romance because it was also a great little Western, displaying the best of both literary genres. Colt was a most fascinating character, a gunman who slipped into the role by necessity rather than volition and now feel too trapped to escape his seemingly inevitable fate, and Amy was more than just your one-dimensional heroine. Story, characters, romance, action--it's all good.

A gunfighter with a conscious.

Half dead wounded gunfighter ambles into his dream for the future but before he can grasp it the past comes chasing him.

I enjoy the relationships that Cole develops with the kids & Amy. Especially when Cole is teaching Saul how to be a man & treat women with respect. Emotionally invested as Amy fights for her man & devastation when he leaves to protect her.

This was my first Western romance and I really enjoyed it. It's a well written story that's packed with details yet is written in a way that it flows easily. The Era in which it takes place stays true to itsself throughout the book and really makes you feel like you have been transported in time. I liked the storyline and characters even though they frustrated me at times..But that's what makes a good book, and I got a lot of the feels from this one.

This is a very good western romance. Colt is a gunman and Amelia is a gunman-turned-preacher’s daughter. Colt is wounded in a gun battle and stumbles upon the cabin of Amelia and her siblings. Her parents were murdered less than a year before. They fall in love but Colt’s past bursts on the scene and drives them apart. I learned a bit of western lingo along the way. By the end I was nearly in love myself.

Love and redemption

A man’s past doesn’t define him and the love of a good woman can make your dreams come true. Lynda J Cox tells the story of a gunslinger who would rather be a family man if only his past would let him. With a skill with words, Cox depicts the emotion of a set of siblings recovering from tragedy who help a man believe there is always the chance to start over. Nice read.

A first novel for a first time author. The Devil's Own Desperado is a fun, light, wholesome read that will bring you back in time with the well formed characters. This is a classic western wrapped in a romantic story. This book is a keeper and worth coming back to every now and again when you need a feel good pick me up.

Satisfying!

There's just something about a desperado that attracts me every single time. I know he's going to struggle like the dickens to stay mean and ornery but I also know when I'm reading a romance he's going to fall in love and be a changed man for the rest of his days. Even knowing this book is going to be slightly predictable it's a very satisfying and enjoyable read.

A Long Way From Yesterday!

I enjoyed this first book of Lynda J. Cox. Originally published as The Devil's Own Desperado, I like the new title. Well written with a strong storyline, I was entertained getting to know Colt and Amelia, the main characters in this book. My heart went out to both of them after reading their backstory and I rooted for them to have their HEA. JudyE

Recall liked

I really liked it a lot. Im not usually a romance western but this story is great. It really gives you a sense of how wild things can be and how people's opinions can interfere with what is love. And how two people can be interfered with, even if it was to help. The writing is good the story flowers and is a great length as well as easy enjoyable read.
