“Fabulous, funny, and fin-tastic fun!” —Mo O’Hara, New York Times-bestselling author of My Big Fat Zombie Goldfish
I adopted a senior cat about a year ago and we have been having some trouble bonding. He isn't particularly cuddly and was very traumatized when I got him, and I'm afraid my resident younger cats would be too much for him, so he has a cozy room by himself. So I've been reading middle school level books to him every evening to spend some time with him. He seems to enjoy our time together.
These books aren't perfect. I'm a little bothered by Ophelia's over the top "I'm so perfect" attitude and that one of the distinguishing features of her archenemy is his unibrow (seriously, can we stop writing stories that make fun of physical characteristics or equate unattractiveness with evil?). But overall the books are so over the top silly that I can give them a pass. Some of the "purr," "meow," and "fur" based puns make reading aloud a bit of a challenge. Luckily my cat isn't super critical of my reading skills. And he does seem to purr more often when our heroine gets the better of the doggy CCIA.
My son liked this book which is all about a cat buglar named Ophelia von Hairball V and her sidekick/inventor Oscar F. Gold who are trying to win the Furry Feline Burglary Institute's (FFBI) latest contest, the MEOW competition. The story has gadgets, adventures and a lot of cat puns, which pleased the 12 year old.
Quick light read with fast moving, action packed plot. Ophelia and her brainiac fish sidekick are fun characters. The feline puns, while kind of clever, got a ittle tiresome and distracting (think the Egg Man played by Vincent Price in the old Batman TV series..."Eggcellent!").
What a find! I laughed along with kids as we made our way through this hilarious adventure! Finding a children's book that I enjoy as much as my kids is a real winner!
