I am not a really big fan of short stories, but I do sometimes persuade myself to read the prequel of a new series. Especially if I am sure I will be reading that specific series. I hate missing out on important details and whatnot, so skipping is not really an option.

Not an option GIFs - Get the best GIF on GIPHY

This prequel was pretty entertaining. I mean L.A. Cotton already had me convinced of this series when I saw the word "rockstars". Count me in!!

There was a bit of a tragedy simmering in the background and it is very clear from the start that we are dealing with two broken souls in this book...Rockstar Rafe and Country singer Eva. I am very curious to see where their story will take us but... I am gonna be honest here and say that I was much more interested in the secondary characters.

Especially Molly, Hudson and Levi. Not surprising though, because this happens to me all the time and I can only hope that L.A. Cotton will be writing their stories as well.

1261374 - animated, begging, caption, edit, edited screencap ...

So even though I am not a novella fan. I really enjoyed reading this one, but I am mostly looking forward to the full novels ;) Won't be long now.

***4 "The things I want to do with you!!!" stars***

"Maybe there's a reason you're both here, at this exact time. Maybe he's supposed to help you heal."

I used to love rockstar romances, but it's been a while since I've read one...
Don't kick me in the butt, but this was my first book by L.A Cotton, even though I'm flirting with her Riders for a while...
This book has been a lovely introduction in a new series, full of music, romances, and heroes with countless scars inside out!!!

"All it takes is a second for everything to change..."

This was indeed the beginning and there are so much more to wait from this story with these heroes...
Rafe and Eva, I'm sure, they are about to rock the music scene and their world after that ending...
This was their beginning, but the end left us full of anticipation...
I need the next books and i need to find out more about the rest of the crew in the Black hearts still beat, and Molly, of course!!!!
God, I'm afraid of what will come in the next book!!! Shits are about to hit the fan!!!!

"Rafe Hunter was breathing life back into me, and I was quickly becoming addicted."

I won't say much about the story... If you will read the blurb, you will get the general idea of the book... A girl and a boy are falling of each other... Both of them are into music.. Different kind of music, but the notes and lyrics are connecting them somehow...
Both of them are scarred... Her scars are more obvious to us, since all the book is from her POV... His are not so clear to see, but they are there too...
And then came chaos and everything is about to turned upside down...

"What are we doin' Rafe?"
"Falling" he whispered."

"Because every second I spent with Rafe, the more I felt myself fall.
And I was terrified he wouldn’t be there to catch me."

And now... We just wait for the next book!!!
And i need it so badly, cause i want to unravel all the secrets that our characters are keeping hidden... And when I'm saying characters, i mean all of them!!! And the secondary characters...
They need to be heard as well!!!!
Please hurry up Lianne!!!!

Audiobook read.

I’ve been wanting to read an L.A. Cotton book for a while and I’m so glad it didn’t disappoint. Evangeline is a cancer survivor, only she doesn’t know how to start living again. When a talent contest offers hope to making money for her family she takes a chance. What she didn’t expect was to meet Rafe Hunter.

This is the first book in a series. There is some beautiful singing in the audiobook and the romance is a slow burn.

No obligation to review however copy was free from the author. My review is honest and my own opinion.

Wow! It's no secret that I love rock star romance, and when I found out one of my favorite authors was coming out with this new series, I couldn't help but to dive right in. Rush is the prelude novel to the Black Hearts Still Beat series. It was a fantastic introduction into this whole new world full of romance, heartbreakingly beautiful lyrics and a connection between two scarred souls.

Evangeline Walker has been going through the motions day after day, but not truly living. Not like she did before. Making music was her passion and dream, but that was before her life was turned upside down. So her best friend Molly decides that she needs a little push and enters her into a country music competition. Maybe getting back to what she loved before will make her feel alive again. And there at the competition, she meets Rafe Hunter, the bassist for the Black Hearts Still Beat. The two of them hit it off from the start, and he helps her to remember what it feels like to truly live again.

Rush was an emotional, angsty rock star romance that I devoured in a day. Endearing characters, an engaging story-line packed with all the feels, that made me both cry and swoon... This was a completely engrossing page-turner that I simply couldn't bring myself to put down. I am already in love with this world and after that ending, I cannot wait for book two. I NEED MORE EVA AND RAFE... LIKE NOW!

This story unfortunately was too slow for my preferences.
There were parts that were dragging and lost my interest.
I found very hard to deal with the heroine’s inner pessimistic thoughts or attitude and I can not say it was an exciting read... 😔😔
I will not continue with the rest books in the series.

”It’s better to have loved and lost a rock star than to never have loved one at all, right?”

Dammit!!
Now I want to fall in love with a rockstar. Specifically Rafe Hunter. Because damn if he wasn’t as swoony as hell!!

I wasn’t sure to expect with Rush, but LA Cotton just made me fall in love with a Rockstar and left me panting for more.

”Rafe Hunter was breathing life back into me, and I was quickly becoming addicted.”

Eva, the aspiring country star, needs a reason to breathe after everything she’s been through. Life is a chore until she enters a talent contest and meets Rafe, a member of Black Hearts Still Beat.

“I want you, More than I’ve ever wanted anything.”

Their instant connection and chemistry was amazing and they completely swept me up in their love story.

”Because every second I spent with Rafe, the more I felt myself fall.
And I was terrified he wouldn’t be there to catch me.”

LA Cotton just introduced us to a new world, made us fall head over heels in love and then left us hanging!! And damn it do I need more... RIGHT NOW.

“This isn’t the end, Eva, It can’t be the end.”

This may be the end for now, but I can guarantee you as soon a Rise releases, I will be inhaling that book too! I need more Eva and Rafe.

My poor heart....

“Because every second I spent with Rafe, the more I felt myself fall. And I was terrified he wouldn’t be there to catch me.” ❤️❤️

Oh boy! While I’m still riding on a high that is LA Cottons Rixon Raiders series, a tiny part of my brain was concerned that while I was still waiting on my baby Ashers book, I wouldn’t have enough space in my heart for someone completely different. My heart is pretty high though, and I needn’t have worried because it welcomed Rafe with open arms and is refusing to let go! RUSH is a prelude novel to the BLACK HEARTS STILL BEAT series, and it’s an emotional, angsty rockstar romance. It is such a perfect introduction to a brand new LA Cotton world, and I’m so excited to see where the next book takes us! ❤️

I have never listened to an audiobook that contains proper singing within the book. If I had known, then I may have passed this by and that would have been a huge mistake. The singing and the lyrics added a wonderful layer to the book.

Evangeline really moved me with her journey and the impact that it had on her life. Her character is wonderfully developed and thoughtfully created.

As a teen cancer survivor, Evangeline has seen and experienced so much heartache during her young life and carries burdens that she holds deep inside and hidden from the world.

When her best friend Molly submits a tape of her performing to a high-profile talent contest, she has a choice to make. Go for it, enjoy herself and take a risk or stay home, filled with guilt and tortured by being a survivor.

I adored Evangeline and Molly. Their friendship is wonderful. I really liked Rafe and was really rooting for their relationship. He has depth and his character is as well developed as Evangeline’s, even though his role was not as prevalent until later in the book.

This is a slow burn, emotional romance. I enjoyed the way that the story developed and felt that the story definitely delivered. I absolutely cannot wait to continue this series. There is so much more that this series has to offer.

Sarah has become one of my favourite narrators and wow, her skills are on full display in this story.

Ms Cotton and Ms Puckett are both such talents and combined, create an amazing audiobook listening experience.

L.A Cotton is new to me author and I went blind into her book but she totally swept me off my feet with Eva and Rafe story and now I need nothing but more of them. Rush was a short story and introduces us into the rock star world. It was refreshing and captivating book full of angst and chemistry between main characters.
Author wrote not only romance book but also told us deep and profound story about young couple who' feeling and life was so complicated.
This story gave me all the feels I was looking for. It brought me many breathtaking but also very heartbreaking moments but I've welcomed all of them. It wasn't easy for a young girl to find herself in the rich and famous rock star world especially when she experienced some terrific events in her life.
Author left me with a huge cliffhanger and now I'm awaiting early for the next book in Black Heart Still Beat series.
If you like NA story I recommend this book.

Sweet Eva makes her country singing debut as part of a contest. She is quiet, sheltered, naive but needs money to help her family. She doesn't count on meeting Rafe, the bad boy of rock and roll and him changing her life.

This story is sweet with a little edge. It ends with a cliffhanger, not one that made me mad, but one that definitely left me wanting more. How will Eva do? Will Rafe and Eva have their chance at a HEA?
Will she stay healthy? Ohhh so many questions left to answer.

And, I think there is way more to Rafe than we have learned yet. He seemed mysterious to me in a way and I want to more about him and the rest of his band.

I just can't wait to find out!

This is my first book of L.A. Cotton and I enjoyed her writing and story telling very much.

This book is full of music and great lyrics that warm your heart and let you feel what all the characters feel very deeply. In the first 50% of the book we learn alot about the main character Evangeline "Eva" Star Walker and her struggles with her past, present and her future. Sadly we don't get to meet the male main character Rafe Hunter until about 45% of the books. For me the book was a little slow in the beginning but after it assed the 50% mark it really picked up it's pace and I couldn't put the book down.

We honestly all need a friend like Molly. I'm getting more and more excited about the next part of their story especially after this ending and to hopefully see more of Molly and Hudson.

In my opinion this book should've stayed a prequel but it's still a very good beginning for Eva and Rafe's Story.

Nonetheless i enjoyed this story very much that's why I'm giving it 4 out of 5 Stars.

“A second?” “Yeah, for everything to change.”

A fantastic introduction to this new world LA Cotton has created.
Rockstars, aspiring country singer, angst, secrets, heartache and original songs!

Eva at 18 years old has just been through a life changing experience and is reluctant to go back to her love of singing and performing.
With the encouragement of her best friend Molly and her parents she enters into a singing contest.
While their she meets Rafe Hunter from the famous rock band Black Hearts Still Beat and where everything changes for her.

Both have secrets and darkness, And use music to tell their stories and share emotions.
I loved getting a glimpse of the other band members including Rafes brother Levi.

That ending has me needing the next book now!

I plowed through this book in a span of 10, even during working hours. I just couldn’t put it down. I love this authors’ writing and her characters are so relatable! It’s been quite awhile since I’ve read a really good rockstar romance!! I was so hooked.

Eva had been through an ordeal a couple of years ago...a very heartbreaking life-changing event that stole a huge piece of her. She’s only 17 in the beginning but then turns 18. She was such a strong and brave soul after what she’d been through but she’d been granted a second chance so she wanted to live it. She enters a contest for her town, a huge contest where she gets to play guitar and sing her country heart out. She did so well, made it to the semi and then the finals. Her lyrics were so haunting and beautiful, I could feel the pain she conveyed through her words. I loved it! It brought tears to my eyes. While she’s at this contest, she meets the bassist for the hottest rock band in the world and there’s a spark so palpable, you can feel it roll off the pages...as if you’re there.

Rafe was an enigma, very mysterious and quiet. But it made him all the more alluring. It definitely intrigued our country girl. They spent time together during the finals competition, where his bandmate, Hudson was a guest judge. He brought out a side to Eva that had died from her past.

And then there we meet his older brother, Levi, who is the lead singer for their band. He’s a character I can’t wait to know more of. We only see him toward the end but I know the next book is gonna be even more angsty and I can’t wait!! I love the start to this rockstar series!! I’m so excited I took a chance on this book randomly. Aaaaahhhhh!!!

Also, Molly was the best best friend to Eva. She was the rock our girl needed the most and she didn’t disappoint. I hope there’s more romance between her and Hudson though. They were so cute!

Okay, onto the next one....

This reads like a YA book but the content and lifestyle of the rock star makes it not.
At the same time things are hinted at but there isn't much detail as to groupies etc.
1 of 3 books.

No intimate scenes other than the Hero and heroine.
No other woman drama.
Ends on a cliffhanger.

Rush is much more than a novella, it's a beginning. It's the perfect introduction to these characters and this new L A Cotton world.

I started this last night and I could not put it down; yes I read past my bed time and only didn't finish it in one sitting because I can't function on less than 7h of sleep. Evangeline and Rafe take you on a sweet and angsty trip of rendezvous, an instant connection and beautiful yet heartbreaking music.

I adored these two and this book. Evangeline's story and her struggle with her survival is heartbreaking and gave me all the angst I crave. Rafe is a sweet guy but he is hidding so much and I am dying to find it all out. I can't wait to see how these two will react when they see each other again and how they will deal with what's in their future. It's gonna be a crazy epic ride and L A Cotton might have given us a few hints to what might happen... it's not going to be an easy journey for these two but I'm praying they are endgame.

Rush had everything my heart desires in a rockstar romance: heartbreaking backstory, beautiful gutwrenching lyrics, a taste of the exciting and drama-filled rockstar life, a instant connection, attraction that becomes so much more, sexy and hot moments that leave me craving more and angst between our star crossed lovers. So you see this might be a novella, but it was not JUST that, it was so much more! I am already in love with this world and with that ending I know book 2 is going to be amazing and I simply cannot wait. I hate that the wait will probably take a while because I so easily would have binged the whole series in one go. If only...

We got to meet each member of Black Hearts Still Beat in this book and with only just a little sliver of them, I'm already praying each one of them gets his own book.

„All it takes is a second for everything to change.”

And all it took was a couple of pages to feel a whole range of emotions and to fall in love with this story. Rush: The Beginning is a novella introducing us to the Black Hearts Still Beat series, but it’s so emotionally charged that I’m a puddle of feels. From the very first page L.A. Cotton stole my attention and charmed me with this new world she created.

My heart broke for Evangeline, but at the same time I was cheering her on like a best friend would. And Rafe… you’ll fall madly in love with this young rockstar. I did. Although from the very beginning we learn about the heartbreaking Eva’s past, Lianne Cotton soothes our pain putting on Eva’s way an opportunity to make her dreams come true, but also a guy with whom she shares instant and sizzling chemistry. She captured young love so perfectly, that I could feel butterflies in my stomach. Add to it beautiful music and heart-gripping lirycs and I assure you- you’ll feel ALL THE FEELS.

This novella is perfect. Angsty, captivating and emotional. Although L.A. pulled the rug out from under my feet and left me in the state of wanting more, I’m in love with this story so far. I’m waiting with bated breath for the continuation in Rise.

Evangeline Walker is alive, but not living. Not like before. Until Rafe Hunter. Thanks to her best friend, she's taking part in a country music competition. Music used to be her dream but that was before. But maybe, just maybe music can help her find her way back. The stage, performing is like coming home; she can breathe again. Then there's Rafe, the lead bassist for the rock band, Black Hearts Still Beat. He makes her remember what it feels like to be alive, to be excited, feel joy, feel pain. They shouldn't, but can they avoid it?

Eva and Rafe are very personal to me. I was there at the beginning. I was beside them each step of the way. Rafe's gray eyes, Eva's southern charm, both broken. The beauty of their words. Their hidden depths of desperation drew me in. There's a rawness to their pain, a connection that can't be denied, and scattered moments of intense shared beauty that brought their love story to life. And that's what it is, a love story. This is only the beginning and there are rough times ahead but music will show them the way. Country or rock, it doesn't matter. It's the words, the emotions, it's forever.

Wow. Just bloody wow. What a prelude, what a way to introduce a love story that is undoubtedly going to ruin me. Rush brings to life a gorgeous girl who whose struggle hurt my heart & a beautiful boy who hides behind a mask that comes with his job.

Both Rafe & Eva’s introduction was phenomenal from the very first Chapter, like literally LAC reached out from the pages, yanked my heart out & stomped all over it. The emotion was raw & so very real, which made the punch to the gut hurt all the more. Seeing how this pair come together felt super intimate & both of them showed just how hard they try to bury the secrets that hold them hostage to life & its possibilities.

Seriously, this pair are addictive reading & knowing there is more to follow makes me so damn happy. Mind, I think it’s fair to say I also need more Molly, the best friend who makes my soul smile & gahhh do I need more of the BHSB band members who made their mark in this story too.

Amazing read.

I loved it! The characters in this story drew me in!
We have Eva who has faced some hard times in her young age. She lost the light in the process and with it her aspirations. She’s talented though and after her family enters her into a talent show, she decides to go. Enter mysterious bad boy here.
When we meet Rafe you instantly feel the spark between them. Things move fast in a short period, but it doesn’t feel forced so I dig that. Everything felt genuine. I even enjoyed the dynamic between Eva and her bff Molly.

Typically rockstar tropes aren’t my thing, but because L.A. Cotton wrote it I knew I had to read it. And I’m feeling this story. I’m here for the angst, the secrets that have yet to be uncovered about our brooding lead guy and the journey that Eva is about to embark on! I can’t wait for more!

“Sometimes the bad things that happen in our lives put us directly on the path to the best things that will ever happen to us.”

I don’t know why i waited so long before starting this amazing series.

This band has already changed me!

Rafe and Evangeline are just too much to handle, they are absolutely fire.

I couldn’t put it down for a second, it’s mind-blowing.

The chemistry and the passion these two share is just wow!

A rollercoaster of never-ending emotions.

”Rafe Hunter was breathing life back into me, and I was quickly becoming addicted.”

I literally can’t put into words what I just read, and it was just the first book of the series.

L.A. Cotton you’re a genius!

This is the classic rock band romance that will make you go crazy, you won’t help but loving every single word. Trust me!

I can’t wait to start the next one, what a plot twist was that!!!

★5 Stars★💓

Rush is the first book in the Black Hearts Still Beat Series by author  L. A. Cotton, and it is a rock star romance book. I have to say that usually, I am not a fan of the rock star romance genre. I didn't read many books with rock stars, but this book was great for me. It was emotional, heartbreaking, and sweet.

Rafe and Eva are two very different teenagers - almost - adults that live and enjoy their lives very differently. Rafe has the world at his feet because he is part of the most famous rock band Black Hearts Still Beat. The members of the band are very well known for the tumultuous and disorderly life they lead. They always keep the headline for tabloids and scandal newspapers, paparazzi and social media news. They fit perfectly in the expression: ''sex, drugs & rock 'n roll''.

Rafe enjoys his life and success to the maximum, very differently then Eva. Rafe is broken, but we don't know his full story yet, and that is because the story of the book is told only from Eva's POV. We only know that he was hurt.

Eva enjoys her life, completely different from Rafe. Or should I say, she just learns to re-enjoy and live her life again. She is a survivor, she received a second chance at life and she is scared to live again. She matured before time and went through horrible things, she suffered terribly and saw the others suffering the same, or worse than her.

She decides to attend the talent show as a new upcoming country star only for the money, at first. She wanted to repay her parents all the money they spent on her. Before her life changed, she loved to sing. Singing and music were her escape, and she wanted to rediscover that again.

This story was very beautiful and very well written. The chemistry between Rafe and Eva was so intense and powerful. I can't wait to read the next book!

I highly recommend!

Rush by LA Cotton
Eva had it all once until she didn’t. Life changed in a blink of an eye, her outlook transformed, and there was a part of herself that was forever altered. Her guitar gathered dust as it sat waiting for her to pick it up, but she held back until her best friend Molly, convinced her to take a chance and enter a competition that could help her and her family. The competition was fierce, but the highlight was meeting the brothers from Black Hearts Still Beat and for some reason, Rafe Hunter and herself formed a bond. Both had secrets and used music to communicate and relay emotions. But was the bond one-sided? Was this what Rafe did until the next warm body came along? Did she misread the signs? And why has Levi, thrown a spanner in the works? Ms. Cotton has managed to intrigue me with this book and she left me on a whopping cliffhanger – need to know now what happens next. I listened to this on audio and thoroughly enjoyed it.

A fantastic start to what is sure to be an angst filled, heartbreaking, rock star romance series. LA Cotton is quickly moving up the list of my favorite authors. You want sports romance? She's got it. You want new adult/bully romance? She's got it. And now, she can add rock star romance to her brilliant repertoire.

I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. It was definitely more emotionally charged than I expected. Don't start throwing insults my way, but rock stars really aren't my thing. That's not to say I won't read them, it's just not my preferred genre. But, LA Cotton made me fall in love with a rock star and i'm not even mad about it.😉 Rafe Hunter is the lead bassist for America's hottest band and everything I love in a hero. He's quiet and mysterious, but he's loyal and fiercely protective of those he loves. From the very first scene with Rafe, he was worming his way into my heart. His laid back, casual demeanor was refreshing. I can't wait for more of his backstory and to learn the secrets he's hiding.

Eva. Sweet, caring, independent Eva. My heart broke for her and her daily struggle of survivor's guilt, all while admiring her strength and determination. I can't fathom being in her shoes and experiencing what she did, or carrying the guilt she carries. Music is in her soul and after all she's been through a little push to get back into the swing of things just may change her life....again.

“ Hunter was breathing life back into me, and I was quickly becoming addicted.”

The pull between Eva and Rafe is immediate and undeniable. I love how sweet they are to each other. Even with the instant attraction, the romance and intensity was there, palpable on every page. The flirty banter kept a smile on my face and the hilarious secondary characters added some comedic relief to this intense, emotional story. I expected Rush to end on a cliffhanger as it was an introduction to Eva and rush's story, and I absolutely cannot wait to see where this story goes. I'm looking forward to seeing Eva step up and show the world what she's made of, but more importantly accepting she's worth it and there's a reason she is where she is today.

“This isn’t the end, Eva, It can’t be the end.”

Be still my heart. This book totally got under my skin. I was captivated by this story from the very start.

I am such a fan of L.A. Cotton and one of the things that I love most about her books is her phenomenal writing style. She has such a magical way of bringing the reader into the story. Her storytelling is atmospheric and so full of feeling. I love how smooth and inviting the prose is. The plot of the story was addicting. I couldn't get enough. I really loved the premise of the story and where the author it taking it.

I really loved the characters. Especially Eva. She is overcoming some deep-seated issues and I really connected with her character. Rafe was a little more mysterious but what I saw of him I really liked. He was kind to Eva and he never pressured her for more than she was willing to give. He was hiding some deep-seated issues just like Eva. There was plenty of depth where Eva's character was concerned. I think that she had some great character growth in this book. I really liked the secondary characters in this book and I hope that there is more of them in the second book.

I liked that Eva and Rafe were able to bond in the time that they spent together. While they didn't totally open up to each other they did share something real. I liked the chemistry that they had with one another. It felt natural. With the ending in this book, I really can't wait to see where their relationship goes in the second book. There is definitely going to be a journey.

Overall, this book knocked me off my feet in all the best ways. This story and these characters are so addicting. I was so enamored with this book that I read it in a single sitting. I am so glad that the second book is already out because if it wasn't I would have been a huge mess right now. I am still kind of a mess at the moment, but at least I can get my next fix. This story is some serious kindle crack. I can't recommend this book enough!
