An early tale of the She-Devil! Explore the early years of the wild and untamed Sonja the Red, before she became the scourge of Hyboria - Red Sonja! Retaining her trademark armor and flame-filled hair - and temper, writer Luke Liberman (Red Sonja: Doom of the Gods) and artist Sergio Davila (Conan) deliver high adventure and horror as they introduce the demon conqueror Raka and his devil's brew, which turns men against their fellow men (and everyone in their way!). Also featuring the return of Sonja's early mentor, Ozzyus!
Luke Lieberman grew up in Weston Connecticut where the woods were a playground for his imagination. After graduating NYU film school, he moved to LA to apprentice Stan Lee, who mentored him in the art of storytelling. He left Stan's employ to relaunch the Red Sonja comic book franchise where he serves as licensor and executive editor to this day. Luke has personally written over 50 issues under the title, including this years Red Sonja: Birth of a She-Devil mini-series.
After graduating Loyola law school and joining Rosenfeld, Meyer & Susan to practice intellectual property law, Luke collaborated with his friend and mentor Stan, as well as Ryan Silbert and Kat Rosenfeld, to co-author Stan Lee's Alliances: A Trick of Light. This project has been a dream come true.
These days Luke does his best writing at the family cabin on Flathead Lake in Montana. Home is where the heart is. He is a brother of four, uncle of 11, father of two, and husband to one Shannon Lieberman, who is the joy of his life.
Great book is what I expected blood, brutality, action and vengeance as on the Hyborians can deliver. This is not really and origin story but an early take of Red Sonja.
Sonja does not owe the world anything, but how far will she go to save and avenge a friend. A former mentor returns as well as a beast from her past that is cutting a bloody scare across the world.
The book is what I expected, action ,blood and brutality. This is the typical book of Red Sonja and the Hyborian age. The art work goes well with the story. Each chapter starts with the issue cover and there is a cover gallery at the end with a full page splash of the varient covers.
A good entry point for those who want to read about the She-Devil of Hyrkania. We start with her murdering a corrupt Sultan who "rewards" her for stealing a gemstone by attempting to force her into his bed then move onto her trying to find a young woman enslaved by an insane social darwinist bandit who is using drugs to turn people into beasts. Sonja used to work with a bandit who raised her after her unfortunate origin story and blames him for the fact the young woman was enslaved in the first place.
I liked the fact that Sonja screwed up royally in her thieving days and got some innocent people killed, which does a lot to drive the plot forward. Unfortunately, it's hampered by the fact the villain is completely insane and one-dimensionally evil. It's certainly common for Hyborian Age villains to be complete monsters but I felt they could have done a bit better.
As usual, the art for Dynamite's Red Sonja is fantastic and she is a mixture of breathtaking beauty with bloodshed. Fanservice of the chainmail bikini kind is pretty much to be expected. So is many a severed head.
This is a re-telling of the Red Sonja story. It's ok. The artwork is actually pretty good. The story? Meh.
We follow Red Sonja before she became famous for running around with Conan. While the story itself could have been decent, it is ruined by the silly villain. It is very similar to a Hyborian Age Doomsday. Yeah, Red Sonja fights a Doomsday-like creature.
I liked Red Sonja and that's why I had gotten this volume. While not disappointing, it could have been so much better. Compare this to the quality writing of the Conan comics released by Dark Horse. Better off reading those.
Basicly a basic Red Sonja story but this being a Year-One-thing, Sonja is a bit more teenage with her reclessness. Could've been better, could've been much worse, nothing too memorable. Although, that said.... the art was nicely gorey and bloody and slicey. Just a thought.... are Red Sonja stories starting to run out? Is the time frame where she wonders around too restrictive because these stories have a real repetitive feel in them.
The art is excellent- beautiful and kinetic when needed. Great coloring too. Definitely one of the best looking Red Sonja books.
The story is mostly very good and the actions and dialogue are in character. I also appreciate that it’s a complete self contained story.
There are some elements that don’t fit with my experience of Sonja’s character- mostly related to her involvement with her mentor’s plans in regards to the escorted merchant. There’s also minor plot holes or bits that don’t flow well. These are minor in comparison to the overall quality.
Alternate covers are included as well. Some are absolutely gorgeous.
Red Sonja comics’ quality can vary greatly, but this is definitely one of the best/better ones.
After rolling my eyes upon finding out this mini was written by Luke Lieberman, my hopes were up a bit after realizing this was kind of a "Year Two" sort of deal, a not-quite retelling of the origin eschewing the usual "rape 'n goddess" bullshit. The story is told by a regretful older thief who trained a young Sonja in the ways of crime after chancing upon her post trauma.
Lieberman manages to keep this up until about the midpoint, after which Sonja is just yet again battling an evil-for-the-sake-of-evil warlord who has a thing that makes people his mindless violence minions and then they kill him at the end. I guess it was kind of amusing that he ended up looking like Doomsday.
