Tagore’s Chaturanga (Quartet) is a short novella set in 19th century Bengal. The philosophical questions which are raised in the course of the story make this one of his most complex and metaphorical works. A social novel centred on four characters, it raises pointed questions about religion and atheism, dabbling in the complex hues of the man-woman relationship. Published in 1916, this novel is considered a landmark in Bengali literature.

The story revolves around the four pivotal characters with just one woman in the midst of three males. And the protagonist Sachis–the most tormented soul–is torn between natural human longings and a forced imposition of spiritual emancipation. It is a struggle between the form and the formless. Subtle psychological interpretations of the minds of the characters lead relationships from the physical to the mystical and draw the reader to look beyond the apparent, deeper into the workings of the human mind.

Quartet, the present translation of Chaturanga, lends a contemporary flavour to the novel. It successfully brings out Tagore’s profound understanding of the human subconscious, without sacrificing the underlying playfulness in the language and the unique style of the original work.

Awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 "because of his profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse, by which, with consummate skill, he has made his poetic thought, expressed in his own English words, a part of the literature of the West."

Gitanjali (Song Offerings), Gora (Fair-Faced), and Ghare-Baire (The Home and the World) are his best-known works, and his verse, short stories, and novels were acclaimed—or panned—for their lyricism, colloquialism, naturalism, and unnatural contemplation. His compositions were chosen by two nations as national anthems: India's Jana Gana Mana and Bangladesh's Amar Shonar Bangla.

---এই বই হতে ভাল লাগা কিছু কথা নিচে দেওয়া হলো::

১। যারা নিন্দা ভালবাসে তারা নিন্দা ভালবাসে বলিয়াই করে, সত্য ভালবাসে বলিয়া নয়
২। মানুষের ভিতরকার দীপ্যমান সত্যপুরুষটি স্থূলতা ভেদ করিয়া যখন দেখা দেয় তখন কেহ-বা তাহাকে প্রাণপণে পূজা করে, আবার অকারণে কেহ-বা তাহাকে প্রাণপণে অপমাণ করিয়া থাকে
৩। গল্পই লোকের বিশ্বাস কাড়িবার জন্য সাবধান হইয়া চলে, সত্যের সে দায় নাই বলিয়া সত্য অদ্ভুত হইতে ভয় করে না
৪। ফুলের উপরে ধুলা লাগিলেও যেমন তার আন্তরিক শুচিতা দূর হয় না তেমনি এই শিরীষ-ফুলের মত মেয়েটির ভিতরকার পবিত্রতার লাবণ্য তো ঘোচে নাই

এই বই আপনাকে ভাবাবে আর আপনি লেখার গভীরে যেতে চাইবেন।

I had heard of Rabindranath Tagore for many years, but suspected that his reputation was of the bubble variety -- until I read Quartet. Now I suddenly feel as if I had missed something really precious for all those years. In a mere matter of 78 pages, Tagore takes up the subject how how spirituality interfaces with daily life. We have four main characters: the kindly atheist Jagmohan, his nephew Sachish (who follows his uncle until he becomes a sannyasi, one who has renounced the world), the supremely grounded young widow Damini, and the narrator Sribilash.

The name Quartet comes from the interaction of these four characters. The alternate title of the book is Chaturanga, which is the ancient Hindu game from which chess was derived. In a way, the book is a chess match between the spiritual life and the life of the "householder" (that is, married life). Who wins? No one does: The result is a stalemate.

Each of the four chapters is approximately twenty pages in length, and each is a small masterpiece in its own right.

The chess game continues apace.

আধ্যাত্মিকতা, ঈশ্বরচিন্তা (কিংবা নিরীশ্বরচিন্তা), নর-নারীর পারস্পরিক সম্পর্ক এবং তাদের বিশ্বাস ও চেতনার বিবর্তন বিষয়ক এই একটা "দার্শনিক উপন্যাস" লিখেছেন রবীন্দ্রনাথ।

বাস্তবতার সঙ্গে সম্পর্করহিত এই উপন্যাসটা পড়তে গিয়ে কী যে বিরক্ত লেগেছে!

মানুষের চরিত্র এবং জীবনের পরিস্থিতি ও মূল্যবোধকে বিষয়বস্তু করে লিখিত রবীন্দ্রনাথের ছোটোগল্পগুলো যখন পড়ি, তাদের প্রাঞ্জল, পরিমিত এবং realistic প্রকাশশৈলীর জাদুতে মুগ্ধ হই। গল্পগুলো পড়লে বোঝা যায়, তাদের নির্মাণের পশ্চাতে লেখকের বাস্তব অভিজ্ঞতার একটি জোরালো প্রেক্ষাপট আছে। চরিত্রগুলো জ্যান্ত।

অথচ, দু-তিনটে বাদ দিয়ে তাঁর বেশিরভাগ উপন্যাস পড়তে গিয়ে ঠিক উল্টোটা ঘটে। রবীন্দ্রনাথের উপন্যাসের পটভূমি, চরিত্র, ঘটনানির্মাণ, সবকিছুই কেমন যেন কষ্টকল্পিত, কৃত্রিম। আইডিয়ার গভীরতা আছে, কিন্তু কাহিনি এবং চরিত্রনির্মাণে লেখকের বাস্তব অভিজ্ঞতার ছোঁয়া পাইনা। দার্শনিক আইডিয়া বিতরণ করা আর উপন্যাস রচনায় তো পার্থক্য আছে।

Verbosity'র দ্বারা জর্জরিত ন্যারেটিভ এবং মেকি কথোপকথনের মারপ্যাঁচে সাজানো এইরকম খান-চারেক "অন্য ধারার" উপন্যাস লিখেছিলেন গুরুদেব— কী যে লিখেছেন, কী যে বোঝাতে চেয়েছেন, উপন্যাসের অন্তিমে কী যে সিদ্ধান্তে পৌঁছেছেন, অবাস্তব উদ্ভট এই চরিত্রদের জোগাড়ই বা করেছেন কোথা থেকে... ভগাই জানে!

এই উপন্যাসটা অবশ্যই রিভিউয়ের দাবী রাখে। এতটুকু একটা বইয়ে প্রেম, বিরহ, আস্তিকতা, নাস্তিকতা, নরনারী, এতরকম মনো বিশ্লেষণ করা শুধু রবীন্দ্রনাথের মত অসীম ক্ষমতাধারী কোন মানুষের পক্ষেই সম্ভব ছিল।

গুরুদেব এই উপন্যাসে বোধহয় ইচ্ছে করেই রূপকের ব্যাবহার বেশি করেছেন। সহজে বলে ফেললে সেকালের সমাজে গুরুদেব সমালোচিত হতেন বলেই মনে হয়েছে। তাই উপন্যাসটা পড়া এত সহজসাধ্য নয়। আর অনেকেই অর্ধেকে গিয়ে বিরক্ত হয়ে রেখেও দিতে পারেন।

তবে এতকিছু সামলেও যদি কেউ এই উপন্যাসটা পড়েন, সে অন্তরে এবং বাইরে দারুণ সমৃদ্ধ হবেন। অনেকটা অসীম সাগর সেঁচে মুক্তো আনার মতই এই কালো অক্ষরগুলি তার মনের ঐশ্বর্য বাড়াবে।

এই উপন্যাসটা নিয়ে আলোচনা হওয়া দরকার। আমি ক্ষুদ্র মানুষ, রবীন্দ্রনাথ এর সৃষ্টি আমার কাছে দুরধিগম্য সাগরের মত। তবে বোদ্ধা পাঠকের জন্য এই বইটা আমার ব্যক্তিগত রেকমেন্ডেশন থাকল।

মানবহৃদয় বুঝতে না পারলে বড়ো লেখক হওয়া যায়। বাহান্ন বাজার তেপ্পান্ন গলির মতো অন্ধিসন্ধি মানবের মনে। রবিবাবু মানুষের মনের জটিলতাকে খুব ভালো উপলব্ধি করতে পারতেন। হৃদয়ের সূক্ষ্মতম অনুভূতিও তার দৃষ্টিতে ধরা পড়তো। তাই 'চতুরঙ্গ' নামের ছোট উপন্যাসে দামিনী, শচীশ ও শ্রীবিলাসকে নিয়ে কী খেলাটাই না দেখালেন!

কলকাতার নামজাদা নাস্তিক জগমোহন ওরফে জ্যাঠামশাই। ভূত, ভগবান কিছুই তিনি মানেন না। মিল, স্পেন্সার প্রভৃতি পড়ে তিনি মানবকল্যাণে সর্বোচ্চ সুখ তত্ত্বে আস্থাশীল। ম্যালথাস পড়া ছিল জ্যাঠামশাইয়ের। তাই প্রথমবার বিপত্নীক হওয়ার পর দ্বিতীয়বার বিয়ে করেননি। এমন তেজস্বী নাস্তিক জ্যাঠামশাইয়ের কাছেই মানুষ হয়েছে শচীশ। সে জগমোহনের ছোটো ভাইয়ের ছেলে। শচীশ জ্যাঠামশাইয়ের যোগ্য শিষ্য। সে-ও স্বনামধন্য নাস্তিক। জাত-পাত মানে না, ধর্ম-অধর্মের বালাই নেই। পাড়ার মুসলমান চামড়ার কারিগরদের সাথেই নিত্য ভাব-ভালোবাসা। এই শচীশের সাথেই বন্ধুত্ব গড়ে উঠলো শ্রীবিলাসের। ততদিনে জল অনেক গড়িয়েছে। প্লেগে গরিব মুসলমানদের সেবা করতে গিয়ে জ্যাঠামশাই মারা যান। বিবাগী হয় শচীশ। তাকে অনেক খুঁজে এক সাধুর আশ্রমে পায় শ্রীবিলাস। একসময়ের ঘোর নাস্তিক শচীশ এমন স্বামীজির প্রধান চ্যালা! তার পদসেবা করেই শচীশের পরমানন্দ লাভ।

শচীশের এহেন পরিবর্তনে শ্রীবিলাসের আক্কেলগুড়ুম। জ্যাঠামশাইয়ের একনিষ্ঠ কর্মীর এ কেমন অধঃপতন! একসময় শ্রীবিলাসও সাধুর দলে যোগ দিল।

লীলানন্দজির শিষ্যরা মরার আগে অনেকেই তার নামে নিজেদের সবকিছু লিখে দিয়ে যেত। দামিনীর স্বামী শিশুতোষও তাই করে। দামিনীর যাওয়ার কোনো আশ্রয় ছিল না তা নয়। তবে স্বামীর কাণ্ডকে সে মানতে পারেনি। তাই নিজেই হাজির হয়েছে সাধুজির ডেরায়। উদ্দেশ্য তাকেও থাকার ব্যবস্থা করে দিতে হবে। সাধুজি বাধ্য হয়ে দামিনীকে আশ্রয় দেন।

শচীশ পাঁড়ভক্ত। দামিনী সাধুকে সইতেই ���ারে না। তবু অসম্ভব এক আকর্ষণ দুজনেই দুজনের প্রতি অনুভব করে। শ্রীবিলাস সেখানে উপলক্ষমাত্র। একসময় ওরা তিনজন সাধুর দল থেকে বের হয়ে আসে। এরপর তিনজনের মনের পরিস্থিতিকে অসম্ভব নৈপুণ্যের সাথে এঁকেছেন রবিবাবু। এত জটিল মানুষের মন তা বুঝি গভীর ডুব দিয়ে দেখেছেন রবীন্দ্রনাথ।

এই উপন্যাসের সমাপ্তি নেই। অন্তত আমার মনে হয়েছে। দামিনী ও শচীশের মনের ঝড় পাঠক হিসেবে আমাকে ছুঁয়ে গেছে। শ্রীবিলাস সব পেয়েও রিক্ত। সে-ই বুঝি সর্বত্যাগী সন্ন্যাসী।

রবীন্দ্রনাথ তাঁর জীবদ্দশায় আলোচনা-সমালোচনার বাইরে ছিলেন না। মৃত্যুর আট দশক পার হয়ে গেলেও এখনো তিনি আলোচিত। অনেকের কাছেই সমালোচিত। সেই সমালোচনা তাঁর লেখা না পড়েই। সেইসব সমালোচনার বেশির ভাগ নির্জলা মিথ্যা। রবীন্দ্রনাথ সত্যিই প্রতিভাবান ছিলেন। নতুবা মানবমনকে এত নিখুঁতভাবে আঁকতে পারা সহজ নয়।

রবি ঠাকুরের উপন্যাস ভাষিক সৌন্দর্য ছাড়া আর কোনভাবেই রিলেটেবল মনে হয়না আমার কাছে। রবি ঠাকুরের উপন্যাসের চরিত্ররা কেমন যেন রক্তমাংসের নয়, বরং রবীন্দ্রনাথের ভাব-দর্শন প্রচারের নিমিত্ত মাত্র। তবু রবী ঠাকুরের উপন্যাস পাঠ যথার্থ। ভাষার নিটোল সৌন্দর্য, প্রেমের মহৎ প্রকাশ আর সৃষ্টির 'পর নতুন দৃষ্টি কিংবা উচ্চ দার্শনিক ভাবনার আলাদা মূল্য নিশ্চয় রয়েছে।

Story of an atheist narrator Sribilash, his equally atheist friend Sachish and the young widow Damini and how they come to be followers of Swami Lilananda. The two atheists become believers in God under the influence of Swamiji and get inebriated in the mysticism of spiritual edification. But after many months will they be able to sustain their spiritual ecstasy or revert back to being atheists? That's what the latter part of the story is about.

Initially I didn't enjoy the story and the conversations were mostly dull. But when it got to the Swami Lilananda part, which is an interesting name, the trademark Tagore with his erudite and witty conversations was back and injected life into the story.

রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের লেখা পড়ে সেটির আলোচনা বা সমালোচনা করার যোগ্যতা বা অজ্ঞতা আমার নেই, তাই নীচের কয়েক লাইন কেবলমাত্র আমার মনের ভাবনাকে কোথাও টুকে রাখার উদ্দেশ্যেই লেখা, সযত্নে এড়িয়ে যেতে পারেন অকালপক্কতা ভেবে।

ছোটবেলা থেকেই লক্ষ্য করেছি, রবীন্দ্রনাথের বহুমুখী সাহিত্যকীর্তির মধ্যে কিছু কিছু আঙ্গিকের প্রতি আমার বাড়াবাড়ি রকমের পক্ষপাতিত্ব রয়েছে। দুঃখের বিষয়, ওনার উপন্যাসগুলো যেকটাই পড়া হয়েছে, কোনোটাই প্রকৃত অর্থে ধরতে পারিনি। তাই প্রায় পাঁচ-ছ'বছর আগে শেষ চার অধ্যায় পড়ে বিশ্রী লাগায় চতুরঙ্গ একসাথে লাইব্রেরি থেকে ধার করা সত্ত্বেও না পরেই ফেরত দিয়ে দিই। যা একটা চমৎকার দূরদর্শী সিদ্ধান্ত ছিল, এখন বুঝতে পারছি।

চতুরঙ্গ আদ্যোপান্ত দার্শনিক উপন্যাস, তাই গল্পের কুশীলবদের কাজকর্ম, চিন্তা প্রবাহ সবসময় ঠিক যুক্তিপূর্ণ কি না, তা নিয়ে প্রশ্ন জাগলেও মুখ বুজে পড়ে নিয়েছি। বিজ্ঞানের পড়ুয়া, দর্শন, অধ্যাত্বিকতা...চিরকালই মাথার সাত মাইল ওপর দিয়ে প্রাতঃভ্রমণ করে বেরিয়ে যায়। তবে এই বুঝি কেঁচিয়ে গেল ইত্যাদি নিয়ে খুব ভয়ে ভয়ে ছিলাম বলেই হয়তো পড়তে খুব একটা খারাপ লাগেনি। কিংবা হয়তো নিজের মনকেই, ওই যাকে বলে, গ্যাসলাইট করছি।

একশো পনেরো পাতার স্বল্পবপু বইটি চারটি ভাগে স্বতন্ত্র। প্রথম অংশে পড়ি বেঙ্গল রেনেঁসা পরবর্তী যুগের প্রবল নাস্তিক জগমোহন বাবুর কথা। ভদ্রলোকের আচার-আচরণ, বিশ্বাস আশ্বাস ইত্যাদি উত্তরাধিকারে ন্যস্ত হয় ভাইপো শচীশের মস্তিষ্কেও। কলেজের সহপাঠী রূপে আলাপ হওয়া শ্রীবিলাস কালক্রমে শচীশের গুণমুগ্ধ অনুচর ও সুহৃদ...দুইই হয়ে ওঠে। কিন্তু দুর্ভাগ্য ক্রমে জ্যাঠামশায়ের মৃত্যুর পর এক স্বামীজীর প্রভাবে পড়ে একদা চার্বাকবাদী শচীশ হয়ে পড়ে প্রচন্ড ধার্মিক। প্রথমে বিরোধিতা করলেও ঝড়ের মুখে পড়া খড়কুটোর মতো উড়তে উড়তে গল্পের কথক তথা শ্রীবিলাসও গা ভাসায় ভক্তি সাগরে।

এক্ষণে গল্পে আবির্ভাব উপন্যাসের চতুর্থ, এবং সম্ভবত সবথেকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ চরিত্র, সদ্যবিধবা দামিনীর। মৃত্যুকালে তার স্বামী স্বামীজিকে সমস্ত স্থাবর অস্থাবর সম্পত্তি দানপত্র করে যান, ফলে অচিরেই নিজের বাড়িতেই আশ্রিতা হয়ে পড়ে আধুনিক মনোভাবসম্পন্না তরুণীটি। পরিস্থিতি আরো জটিল হয়ে ওঠে, যখন ধর্মপ্রাণ শচীশ, তার প্রিয় বন্ধু (মজা করতে চাইলে বলা যায় শচীশের প্রেমে হাবুডুবু খাওয়া) শ্রীবিলাস, এবং দামিনী, এক গভীর মনস্তাত্বিক টানাপোড়েনের সম্মুখীন হয়।

আগেই জানিয়েছি, আধ্যাত্বিকতা বড়ো উচ্চমার্গের বিষয়, ওসব আমার কোনোকালেই আসেনা, তাই কবিগুরুর এই রচনাটি পড়তে বসে মাঝে মধ্যে মনে হয়েছে, আশুতোষ বাবুর সেই "আমি, সে, ও সখা"র আঁতেল সংস্করণ পড়ছি। ত্রিকোণ প্রেম পড়তে বসলে যে সমস্যাটা তাড়া করে, তা হল আমি একজনকে পছন্দ করে তার পিছনেই আমার সমস্ত উৎসাহ দিয়ে বসি, তাই অপর খেলোয়াড়টিকে অযথাই আমার পক্ষ থেকে অগ্নিচক্ষুর সম্মুখীন হতে হয়। এই যেমন শচীশকে আমার প্রথম থেকেই ভালো না লাগায় গোটা বই জুড়ে ওর অকাল মৃত্যুই কামনা করে গেলাম, মাঝপথে গঙ্গা দিয়ে যে কত জলই বয়ে গেল, তার দিকে দৃষ্টিপাত করলাম না। দামিনী বড়োই খামখেয়ালি, আর শ্রীবিলাস বেচারা সকলের উপেক্ষিত হয়েই থেকে গেল। কতই রঙ্গ দেখলাম চতুরঙ্গে, কিন্তু সেগুলি কিঞ্চিৎ মনে ধরল না |

জানিনা, হাওয়া শেষকালে কোনদিকে বইলো। নাস্তিক নাকি আস্তিকের দিকে।

রবী ঠাকুর যে একটা বিশাল প্রতিভা, তার আরও একটা নমুনা এই বই। যখন বইটা প্রকাশিত হয়, তখন বঙ্গসমাজে নাস্তিকতা মাত্র প্রবেশ করছে, তখনই এরকম একটা উপসংহার টেনেছিলেন বিশ্বকবি।

খুবই ভালো লেগেছে। পূর্ণমনোযোগ দিয়েই পড়েছি।

রবীন্দ্রনাথের নারীদের একটা স্বভাব হলো এই যে, তাঁরাও পুরুষের পাশাপাশি চিন্তা করতে সক্ষম, এক ছিলো ‘চোখের বালি’র বিনোদিনী আর এক এই দামিনী। দুইটা চরিত্রই বেশ শক্তিশালী লেগেছে আমার কাছে। আর ছোটগল্পের কথা আলাদা করে নাইই বা বললাম।

তৎকালীন প্রেক্ষাপটে এটা খুবই কষ্টকর ব্যাপার ছিলো। কিন্তু রবীন্দ্রনাথ তাঁর কর্মে নারীদের চিন্তা করার এবং সিদ্ধান্ত নেবার ক্ষমতা দিয়েছিলেন। এমনিতে আমি আধুনিক নারীবাদ প্রপাগাণ্ডা পছন্দ করিনা। কারণ, আধুনিক নারীবাদ নারীকে ভাবে পণ্য, আর রবীন্দ্রনাথের নারীরা সম্পদ।

মন ছুঁয়ে গেছে।

In this philosophical novel, Tagore creates a conflict of choices men found baffling for the past few centuries—do I turn towards mysticism, spirituality? rationalism? or succumb to naturalism?
The title Chaturanga/Quartet means a body of four parts and in this case the body represents the conflict and the four major characters embody contrasting forces. Two young atheists turn to spiritualism after their mentor dies and find solace—only to be challenged by a young widows allure, a force of nature. It is a delight to see the change in their perceptions and reasoning with time and what path they choose.

আগাগোড়া পড়ে যা বুঝলাম তাতে মনে হচ্ছে ফের পড়তে হবে। একটা আবছায়া রয়ে গেল দৃষ্টিসম্মুখে। ধরা দিয়েও কিভাবে যেন ফাঁকি দিয়ে চলে গেল। সূক্ষ্ম একটা ফারাক থেকে গেল আমার চেতনা আর কবিগুরুর লেখনীর মাঝে। এমনই একটা স্তব্ধতার মাঝে শেষ হল উপন্যাসটা। মাঝপথে হটাত করে মনে হয়েছিল আমি এ কার লেখা পড়ছি ; এ তো চিরাচরিত কবিগুরু নন। হয়তবা আমারই ভুল তাঁকে বুঝতে। অবিশ্বাসীর বিশ্বাস না বিশ্বাসীর অবিশ্বাস - কোন ব্যাপারটা বড় হয়ে উঠল তা নিয়েই দ্বন্দে পড়েছি। কবিগুরু এ এক সাগরে ফেলে দিয়ে গেলেন উপন্যাসটিতে। আস্তিকতা না নাস্তিকতা, ঠিক কোন দিকে চরিত্রগুলো তাদের পথ খুঁজে পেলো তার চেয়েও বড় হয়ে উঠেছে তাদের এই পথিক হয়ে পথের অন্বেষণ।

A story of love's longing, of love's desperation, love's foolishness and finally, love's truth and dignity. No one tells it better than Tagore. Chitrangada, the beautiful daughter of Chitravahana, the King of Manipur, has been raised like a prince. She is strong and accomplished instead of feminine and retiring. She is renowned for her virtues of loyalty, strength and fearlessness rather than her looks. The plain girl however falls in love - with Arjuna no less - and wishes more than anything else to be the most beautiful woman on the earth. She is sure that this will make him sit up and notice her. She gets her wish from the Gods Madana and Vasanta. Be careful what you wish for Chitra. Borrowed beauty weighs heavily on her. She's never sure if Arjuna loves her for her looks or her self. The
falsehood, an illusion and a deceit of the Gods torment and cripple her soul and fill her with distrust and sadness. The poetry took my breath away. The book is tiny, but every line has to be savoured slowly, and more than once. If I had the gift of a great memory, this is what would be committed to it.

Wonderful!! With metaphors, between the line messages and poetry like prose, though less in pages this book had lot of depth and thought provoking messages than any of the long novels, I think that explains the beauty of Tagore’s writing. The story was about Srivilas (the narrator), Satish (Srivilas’s idol), Damini and their emotional complexities in seeking, what is right and what is wrong to them according to their own thinking as well according to the society which they are a part of. I felt Srivilas as weaker character than the rest in the beginning but he was the one who emerged as a stronger one in the end. Hmm all I can say is, this was a beautiful book to start the year with!

বিশ্বাস-অবিশ্বাস, আস্তিকতা-নাস্তিকতা, পরলৌকিকতা-ইহজাগতিকতার মধ্যে একটা যুদ্ধ ছিল। স্পষ্ট বুঝতে পারিনি রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠিক কোন পক্ষ নিয়ে লিখেছেন। অবশ্য না বুঝতে পেরেও খুব একটা ক্ষতি হয়ে যায়নি, তিনি তাঁর সময়ের সবচেয়ে স্পষ্ট সত্যটাই বলেছেন।


উপন্যাসের প্রকাশকাল ঠিক ১০১ বছর আগে। রবীন্দ্রনাথ তখন মধ্য পঞ্চাশে। কবির ব্যক্তিগত বিশ্বাসে হয়ত তখন থেকেই একটা দোলাচলে ছিল। ছোট উপন্যাস। পড়তে খুব বেশি সময় লাগেনি। আর পড়তে খুব ভালোও লেগেছে বটে। চার পাঁচের মাঝে যুদ্ধে চার তারকা জয়ী!

hmm , i was unaware of this story about arjuna having a wife named chitra .

nice love story . After completing this ,i was curious to know more about his son, too , and did some research . Quite interesting story . if you read this or are interested in syory of arjuna, then do search about his son too . you will be surprised.

The introductory statement in the Sanskrit version of the Mahabharata asserts that ‘The tree of the Bharata, inexhaustible to mankind as the clouds, shall be a source of livelihood to all distinguished poets.’ In hindsight, one realises the truth in such a prophetic statement made by Vyasa, given how the Mahabharata defines the Indian literary sphere. The Mahabharata, itself, has had multiple retellings and interpretations among Indian languages.

In the course of his 12 year exile, the Pandava prince Arjuna arrived at Pragjyotisha (Manipur) where he met Chitrangada, the daughter of Prince Chitravahana. Smitten by her charms, he sought her hand in marriage. Picking up on this story thread from the mahakavya, Rabindranath Tagore’s ‘Chitra’ raises some important questions about love and beauty. Though essentially a play, it is indeed surprising that the book does not really have any stage directions mentioned in it and instead just chooses to concentrate on the core story.

The genius of Rabindranath Tagore’s poetry is reflected in very prominent ways through the play, particularly in the sections when Chitrangada talks to Madana and Vasantha, when she gains transient beauty for a year in order to woo the Pandava prince. The lyrical prose narration made me revisit some dialogues of the play due to its sheer poetic quality, where one can almost feel the rhythms of dialogue. Interestingly, the play comes to an end with Arjuna delivering Chitravahana an heir and it is here we realise that the play comes to an end without really offering a conclusion.

An open ending always leaves spaces for reinterpretation and the text invites itself to constant analysis. While one can never be sure about the actual ending Tagore had in mind, my interpretation of the play was Arjuna’s realisation about the fleeting nature of external beauty.

‘I am Chitra. No Goddess to be worshipped, nor yet the object of common pity to be brushed aside like a moth with indifference. If you deign to keep me by your side in the path of daring and danger, if you allow me to share the great duties of your life, then you will know my true self. If your babe, whom I am nourishing in my womb, be born a son, I shall myself teach him to be the second Arjuna and send him to you when the time comes, and then at last, you will truly know me. Today, I can only offer you Chitra, the daughter of a king.’ This dialogue, for me, clinched the deal where Arjuna finally accepts Chitrangada’s inner beauty.

চারটি চরিত্রকে নিয়ে চারটি অনুচ্ছেদে বইটি সাজানো হয়েছে ।চরিত্রগুলো হল: জ্যাঠামশায়,শচীন, দামিনী ও শ্রীবিলাস।

নাস্তিক শচীন ও তার জ্যাঠামশায় উভয়ে মানুষের মঙ্গলের জন্য বিভিন্ন ভালো কাজ করে থাকে।এতে তাদেরকে স্বজন ও সমাজ- সংস্কারকদের রোষে পড়তে হয়।জ্যাঠামশায়ের মৃত্যুর পর নাস্তিক শচীন ও শ্রীবিলাস উভয়ে এক গুরুর সংস্পর্শে ঈশ্বর সাধনায় মগ্ন হয়।গুরুর কাছে তাদের সাথে দেখা হয় বিধবা দামিনীর সাথে।গুরু সাধনার চেয়ে দামিনীর বেশি মনোযোগ শচীনের দিকে ।কিন্তু সাধনার পথে দামিনীকে নিয়ে কিছুতেই সম্পর্কে জড়াতে চায়নি শচীন ।অন্যদিকে দামিনীকে বেশ পছন্দ করত গল্পকথক শ্রীবিলাস ।দামিনীর মৃত্যুর মধ্য দিয়ে সমাপ্তি ঘটে দামিনী ও শ্রীবিলাসের সংক্ষিপ্ত বিবাহিত জীবন।

গল্পের কয়েকটি জায়গায় গাম্ভীর্যপূর্ণ আলোচনায় থেমে যেতে চাইলেও লেখক কিছু চমৎকার শব্দ প্রয়োগ করে লেখাকে গতিশীল রেখেছেন।

**অর্থসাহায্য জিনিসটার জাতিকুল নাই,বিশেষত সেটাকে যখন গ্রহণমাত্র করাই দরকার, স্বীকার করা নিষ্প্রয়োজন ।
**শাস্ত্রে স্ত্রী-পশু-বলি নিষেধ, কিন্তু মানুষের বেলায় ঐটাতেই সব চেয়ে উল্লাস।
**সুন্দরকে মারিতে গিয়াছিল, তাই অসুন্দরটা বুকে লাথি খাইয়াছে ।
**তিনি রূপ ভালোবাসিতেন,তাই কেবলই রুপের দিকে নামিয়া আসিতেছেন।আমরা শুধু রূপ লই লইয়া বাঁচি না,আমাদের তাই অরূপের দিকে ছুটিতে হয়।তিনি মুক্ত,তাই তাঁর লীলা বন্ধনে;আমরা বদ্ধ, সেইজন্য আমাদের আনন্দ মুক্তিতে।এ কথাটা বুঝি না বলিয়াই আমাদের যত দুঃখ ।

A nice play based on the story of Arjuna and Chitrangada from Mahabharata. Princess Chitrangada, who was a warrior and was always brought up like a boy, falls in love with Arjuna but he, unaware of her true identity, rejects her for she was too ordinary and lacked feminine beauty. She then asks Madana and Vasanta (Gods of love and youth) to bless her with perfect beauty of a woman. Being granted this wish, she succeeds in wooing Arjuna but as the time passed; she felt that her body has become her own rival as she wasn't herself anymore. She then decides to tell him the truth. By that time, Arjuna came to know about real Chitra, the woman warrior who’s the terror to all evil doers. When she finally reveals her true self and tells Arjuna that she herself is Chitra, he accepts her saying “My life is full.”

Arjuna has been my second most favorite character from Mahabharata, first being Karana, but in this story, there was something about the characters that I somehow didn't like; Chitrangada for trying to win Arjuna’s heart with an illusion and Arjuna for being so easily smitten by that false beauty despite Chitra’s own warnings. But then, when one is in love, it’s all too natural to have such insecurities, possessiveness, regrets, guilty conscience. And when it comes to expressing such feelings in words, Tagore truly is a master. Poetic and beautifully written.

المسرحية مستوحاة من اسطورة هندية عن ارجونا المحارب الشجاع والذى نذر للالهه الا يعاشر امرأة لمدة 12 سنة وخلال تجواله فى البلاد يلتقى بفتاة محاربة "شيترا" وينبهر بها ويحبها ويريد الزواج منها فيعرف انها ابنة الملك ووريثة العرش ويخبره الملك ان احد اسلافه القداى كان لا ينجب وابتهل للالهه ان يرزق بابن ليكون وريث للعرش فيتقبل الاله دعائه ولكن على انه لن يرزق الا ابن واحد كذلك سلالته لم يكون لاى منهم غير ابن واحد فقط وهنا عندما جاء الدور على هذا الملك كانت المفاجأة انه رزق بفتاة وليس ولد.. فأعدها اعداد المخاربين الرجال لكى تكون وريثة للعرش من بعده
واشترط الملك لكى يوافق على هذا الزواج ان يكون الابن الناتج عن هذه الزيجة هو الوريث ويتنازلا عنه للملك
وبالفعل بعد زواج ثلاث سنوات رزقا بطفل فيودع ارجونا زوجته شيترا والطفل ويرحل عنهم
هذه هى الاسطورة والتى استوحى منها طاغور مسرحيته شيترا والتى تتوافق فى بعض الامور وتختلف فى كثير من الاحداث

রবিঠাকুরের লেখনীতে কট্টর নাস্তিক জ্যাঠামশায়, আত্মপরিচয়হীনতায় দগ্ধ যুবক শচীশ, তেজস্বিনী দামিনী ও শচীশের সহচর শ্রীবিলাস এই চার চরিত্রের জীবন এবং জীবনাদর্শ চারটি গল্পে ফুটে উঠেছে। প্রত্যেকটি গল্পের একটির সঙ্গে অপরটির রয়েছে যোগসংযোগ।

‘জ্যাঠামশায়’ ছাড়া বাকি তিনটির আর কোনোটি তেমন মন ধরেনি। আমার নিকট অনেকটা «ভবের বই» বলে মনে হলো। নিজের জীবনাদর্শ নিয়ে বইটির চরিত্রদের জীবনাদর্শের সাথে যুক্তি তর্ক চালাতে চাইলে পড়ে নিতে পারেন, অন্যথা সুপারিশ করবো না।

গুরুদেব যে এই উপন্যাসে ঠিক কী বলতে চাইলেন, সবটা ঠিক বোধগম্য হলো না।

তবে যতটা বুঝতে পেরেছি বলে মনে হচ্ছে, তাও কতটা সঠিক তা নিয়েও যথেষ্ট ধন্দের অবকাশ আছে। গুরুদেবের কথা তাঁর এক এক শিষ্য, এক একভাবে গ্রহণ করবে; এটাই স্বাভাবিক। তবে এটা বুঝতে পারছি; এটি একটি 'বহুরূপী' উপন্যাস-এক এক বয়সের মানুষের কাছে, এক এক রূপে আবির্ভূত হবে। অনেকটা তাজমহলের মতো; সকালে এক, গোধূলিতে আরেক, জ্যোৎস্নালোকে হয়তো সম্পূর্ণ অপরিচিত।

মাত্র সত্তর পাতার ছোটো কলেবরে গুরুদেব, নাস্তিকতা, আধ্যাত্মিকতা, প্রেম, মনস্তত্ত্ব-সহ আরও কতো কিছুর দিকেই না ইঙ্গিত করেছেন। প্রচুর রূপকের সার্থক ব্যবহার গুরুদেবের আশ্চর্য সৃজনশীল প্রতিভার পরিচায়ক।

তবে উপন্যাসটি পড়ার মাঝপথে বিরক্তি জাগলে, না আগানোই শ্রেয়।

    look vague and shadowy, and the dull moan of the sea comes 
    fitfully through the silence of sleep.  Wistfully he waits for 
    the morning to reveal to him all the strange wonders.  Oh, tell  
   me her story.

I believe an old edition of this play was found in a used bookstore in SW Michigan during the summer I lived there with Martin and Fin, my little brother. I knew who Tagore was and wanted to sample him thanks to the influence of Michael Miley.

Breaking the conventional social shackles of his contemporary world, Tagore ventures into a twisty world of the much popular love triangle plot with a new approach. 4 acts, 4 people and their utter complicated characters. This is one of his best works of prose, according to me.
