This book talked about how various topics in Harry Potter can relate to real world science. Overall, this book was interesting, some of it was a little dull, but most was entertaining. The concepts were explained easily for an upper elementary age audience.

Some of my favorite topics were:

Who was Merlin? An abridged version of the history of various individuals who could lay claim to being Merlin was talked about. Most I had heard of, but there was some new information that I had never read about before.

Apparition/Vanishing Cabinets. The idea that this took its origin from wormholes was intriguing. How to magically move from one place to another across time and space is such a fascinating idea.

Some of the topics were a little odd, such as calling Newton the last great Wizard or trying to compare hidden railway locations to London's Underground. For the majority of the book though, the information was entertaining.

The illustrations were simple, all black and white with hints of gold.

A fun book for any Harry Potter fan, who also likes science.

Read this with my child. It was very interesting and also scientifically informative for us to read together. This proved J. K. Rowling did an enormous amount of research for the Harry Potter series. What we would consider magic in the Harry Potter books has deep roots in science based theory.
