Welcome to a tour of the most spine-chiling places from around the world. Prepare for the frightful as this book looks past rusty iron gates and through creaking old doors. Inside lurk the spirits of not-so-dearly-departed ax victims, wronged women, levitating children and all sorts of things that go bump and boo in the night.
Explore the dim halls of an abandoned insane asylum where thousands met slow downward spirals or death row at Alcatraz where voices still linger. Pitch a tent in a macabre suicide forest or watch your back in a Southern plantation where a triple-murderess won't stay dead. Descend into catacombs filled with lifelike mummies or stroll through a cemetery that hosts eerie rituals. And be sure to visit the real-life locations of your favorite horror movies and even browse the nastiest gift shops you've ever seen.
Everyone with a taste for the spooky needs a copy of this book– it’s a scream!
***Due to some subject matter this book isn't suitable for young and/or sensitive readers due to possible triggers as well as mature themes***
This magazine version, which this is, seems to be a preview of the book itself with similar title and author. Whereas the book has 192 pages, this only has about 92.
The writing looks to be the same in both versions from what I can see through the sample offered by Amazon although there may be an exception or two. The book seems to have very different chapters than this magazine and furthermore it looks to me that either some of the darker entries may have been left out and/or diminished to a collage of very brief "extra entries" at the end of each of the six chapters.
The writing itself isn't really heavy with some nods to the history of the place, what makes it infamous and also what some considered to be paranormal while the author tries to stay neutral with no actual support or refusal of his own views on the matter. Unfortunately given to the amount of these appearing on numerous paranormal shows there are a lot of quotes from other periodicals.
The subjects aren't all really haunted but more towards creepy if you believe such and definitely abandoned, if not straight demolished. For those into the paranormal, many are common names and cases with a few thrown in that may be lesser-known.
And finally like the book, this version has colored photographs mostly for illustrations. There is usually one building photo and accessory photos of other relatable persons, places or events all with captions or quotes. Unfortunately most of these are stock photos so they don't capture why the place is included like the blue flames of Kawah Ijen Volcano although there are a few attempts at "ghost photos".
For a promotional piece, the read wasn't bad enough to make me steer away from the book but also not good enough that I would actively hunt the book done for an actual comparison read.
A collection of places from all over the world that are considered to be the "world's scariest places".
PROS I thought the photography in this book was done well, but some were a little blurry like they were blown up images taken from another time. The places that were covered in this book was a nice mixture of well known places and not so well known places. The descriptions of these places were, I thought, well written.
CONS About half way through, the tone of the book changed. We went from places with creepy history; rumored to be haunted to places that were just abandoned because of economic decline. I feel like we lost the creepy vibe that we started out with.
I was already aware of a handful of these places, but it was still a fun, spoopy read for October. Not all of the pictures were great, however you can always do a quick internet search for more.
