Shirayuki is an herbalist famous for her naturally bright-red hair, and the prince of Tanbarun wants her all to himself! The prince from the neighboring kingdom, Zen, rescues her from her plight, and thus begins their love story.
Shirayuki and Zen finally have "the talk" about their future together. Then, a heavy rain forces the party to take shelter at an inn after seeing off Sakaki. But just as night falls, Obi slips away!
I’m glad we got to learn a bit more about Obi and his past in this volume—that was really interesting and I’m curious to learn more. Plus seeing Zen and Shirayuki totally ticked at him was hilarious. 😂
The whole part with the gang just hanging out at an inn and being a bunch of bantering dorks is totally the best and my favorite part of this volume by far as these characters are really great.
Izana…I can’t say I’m warming up to him, but I think I’m starting to get where he’s coming from in regards to Zen and Shirayuki being together. I think he does care about Zen, he just has a rotten way of showing it, lol. And I don’t know why, but the way the snow is drawn here is so beautiful and cozy—it actually makes me feel like I can see it for real.
‼️Content‼️
Language: damn; crap; dammit; 1 use of God’s name in vain; pissed; what the; screw up
Violence: hand to hand fighting (nothing over PG); injuries and blood (nothing over PG)
Sexual: a kiss; a kiss on the cheek; mild suggestive hints; a guy is shirtless; guys and girls are shown bathing (nothing shown aside from bare shoulders)
Shirayuki's naturally bright-red hair has gotten her into a lot of trouble forcing her to flee to the neighboring kingdom... but fortunately it allowed her to meet the prince of Clarines, Zen! Thus starts a friendship between a most unusual herbalist and a lovestruck prince.
This volumes was neat because we learned a bunch about the mysterious servant, Obi. He’s one of my favorite characters, always with insightful observations and a tongue-in-cheek style.
We also learn there is a plot afoot with Prince Izana. We start a new story arc and it sends Ryu and Shirayuki as Court herbalists on a trip. Ryu is another favorite character and I look forward to this new storyline.
Zen also has been challenged by his brother on the matter of Shirayuki and his future with her. Zen has said he’s going to take action but he’s moving quite slowly. Does he have cold feet about merging his princely life with Shirayuki or does he just want to take his time?
Snow White with the Red Hair is a neat fantasy series with a drama free couple you totally root for. You’ll fall for all the side characters too.
This is a super sweet manga! I definitely wish I had read the rest of the series before picking this book up, as I was rather lost with what was going on but I still enjoyed it. The pictures are great, and the storyline is fun and easy to follow. The plot of mischievous and the romance was really intriguing.
I wouldn't recommend randomly jumping into this series. Start at the beginning, or find some really good summaries!
Three out of five stars.
Thank you to NetGalley and VIZ for providing me a free copy of this book in exchange of an honest review.
For some reason, this wasn't my favorite volume despite that I enjoyed many parts of it.
I REALLY hope that will see more of Prince Raj again! I have come to really enjoy seeing his character (especially his aide who cracks me up every time LOL) and found the opening chapter very satisfying. Even seeing Mihaya was great too and hope it's not the last time we see him either! Also gotta admire Shirayuki in how she never accepts any handouts or takes the easy path. She's always giving her all and following the path that she feels is the BEST to be alongside Zen, even if again, it's not easy.
And once again, my admiration for Shirayuki goes up more and more, BUT! I love how weak in the knees she gets around Zen when he is affectionate. They have such a beautiful relationship and was glad that Zen talked to her about their future and how it's always been yes to her wanting to be by his side. Both she and Zen continue to keep growing as individuals, but I LOVE their relationship and how it's enough for them simply to be together. Like obviously, they talk and such, but one of my favorite parts of this series is how beautifully it portrays doing simple or "mundane" tasks (like eating) as something that helps them grow closer. Like they don't have all these flashy moments and it makes their relationship seem more down-to-Earth. I really really love it! <3
We got some of Obi's backstory and it was different than I expected! Surprisingly those were my least favorite parts but I'm unsure why? They definitely weren't bad and the parts involving Mitsuhide were hilarious! But they still were not my favorites.
However, I LOVEDDDDD the City of Academics! What an amazing place it seems!! And I am SO excited that will be able to experience the city through Shirayuki's eyes and have Ryu with her!
THOUGH THAT PLOT TWIST! :o :o :o
I'm surprisingly very excited to see where it goes because I think with Izana's earlier declaration to Zen to help sway him to make him an ally of his relationship with Shirayuki was VERY good and think this could be that chance! Also, way to go Izana! I'm pretty sure he's on the next cover and hoping that they CAN sway him because what an ally he would be! Also, I will confess it's fun seeing him poke at Zen and seeing Zen get so worked up even though I feel a little bad saying that. LOL! It's just you can really tell in those moments how much they ARE brothers! LOL!
So again, not my favorite volume but still a very good one!
I still think this series does day-to-day life better than just about any other shojo manga. It has a fantastically charming cast of likeable characters and gorgeous art. Watching them all interact is a treat.
It has a very sweet heart at its centre and I am running out of superlatives for how good the last couple of volumes have been. I run hot and cold on fantasy manga, but this one is pretty much perfect.
Chapters 30 - 34: I really enjoyed this volume and appreciated the chance to learn a bit more about Obi and his past. Prince Izana is also becoming a bigger character in the series and I look forward to seeing what happens next.
short series review: In this complete overhaul of the Snow White fairytale, the "princess" is a herbalist with flaming red hair. One prince is demanding that she become his mistress, the other is the one who falls for the poisoned apple. That's just the start of their story. This series is like the best of all the Disney Princess movies wrapped up into one, with none of the awkward musical numbers... and all of the strong girls who know how to take care of themselves.
Zen's and Shirayuki's relationship has progressed enough that Zen is confident to make her his princess, and has basically proposed to her. Izana's questioning of their relationship has also brought it out into the open, with Zen facing up to his brother to declare his intentions. Coincidentally, Shirayuki's recent support from Raj and him granting her a title bolsters her standing a bit, not that it matters to her or Zen, but would help in court. Amusingly, Mihara now offers to adopt her into his family so that she can have a noble status. However, Shirayuki is content with being an official court herbalist anyway, and now she and Ryuu are being sent to a norther outpost to gain more information from there. Izana also tricks Zen, and goes there on his own mission, which we have yet to see.
The main focus of this volume, though, is Obi! Obi's past as a mercenary plays a part as the group stop at an inn while traveling, where another guest is flirting with Mitsuhide. Turns out she is an acquaintance of Obi's from his past, and this interaction brings forth the discussion about Obi's current position. Obi is quite happy being Zen's aide, but it becomes apparent how much he loves them both (that sound you heard was me screaming for the OT3) and how content he is being loved back by them. There's also hints to Mitsuhide and Kiki maybe being a thing (that sound was me screaming for this ship to rise) but also it isn't clear what they are.
On the whole, loads of love in this book! But also the starting of a new arc in the northern region of Wistalia. Also, I have to mention those beautiful winter clothes - the clothing design is once again on point!
Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review from Viz Media LLC, via Edelweiss.
I love this... I love the story, i love the unique characters of this story, i love isit lot, i love each and every about the story .. lovely The best romantic story in planet... It's just amazing... I watched the anime version but it only have 2 seasons...i request the creator to continue the story.. please... Anime is the best way to feel the story.... Please continue the story i request you...
Dios!!!
Snow White With The Red Hair volume 8 is written by Sorata Ataduki, and this volume is all about Obi. The pose he is making on the cover looks sensual, so for Obi fans this cover is a good treat for you! This review copy was provided by Viz Media and NetGalley! This manga series is excellent because the relationship is already established between the two leading characters, and the story is more about the troubles that can surround them as their relationship blooms.
The contents of these volumes consist of a nice hotel and Hotspring adventure, with bonding between Prince Zen and Obi. Other characters also get extremely close, but the main focus is on Obi. There’s some slight foreshadowing when a rather flirtatious lady tries to have her way with Mitsuhide and Zen, but refuses Obi.
The volume contains information on this character’s mysterious past, and there’s a possible hint of tragedy. Obi was an old mercenary with not many friends, except for a mysterious woman. Obi gets hurt on a secret mission, but Shirayuki finds him and heals his battle wound. Obi reflects on his past while Shirayuki cleans up his wound, and realizes that he loves being friends with Prince Zen, and Shirayuki.
There is also some possible tragedy foreshadowing, and maybe Obi is realizing he loves Shirayuki in a romantic way? I’m not sure, but this could become a big problem in the future if Zen ever finds out about it. People who have seen the anime may remember this story as well. Speaking of differences between the anime and manga, this specific volume is the start of new content.
There’s a new arc that wasn’t adapted into the anime contained in this volume. Ryu and Shirayuki work as herbalists in the northern area of Clarines Kingdom. They run into a familiar foe who is undercover. There’s also a large dramatic moment between characters that adds as a great cliffhanger to keep readers invested. Can Shirayuki save the day? Find out in volume 9. Pick up a copy today and support Sorata!
"Snow White with the Red Hair" is fantasy-type manga that takes place in a faraway kingdom. At the beginning of the tale, Shirayuki wants to become an herbalist, but the prince of Tanbarun is planning to make her his concubine! She makes a run for it and encounters Zen, the second prince of the nearby kingdom of Wisteria. Zen helps her escape from her plight and escorts her to his kingdom, where she becomes a full-fledged court herbalist. The rest of the story follows their adventures together (and apart!) as they develop deeper feelings for one another and work to overcome the gap between their social stations.
What impressed me the most about this story was how balanced the characters were. Often, characters are written with extreme characteristics and stereotypes. While this can be funny and distinctive, it can also get old after a while. It was refreshing to see that Shirayuki wasn’t a helpless princess, nor was she refusing assistance. She certainly did want to do things for herself and on her own, but she wasn’t above accepting help when she needed it. Even Zen, despite his stubbornness and rule-flouting tendencies, didn’t just rush off to do whatever he wanted all the time. Instead, he faithfully played the role of prince and followed his duty rather than his emotions.
Personally, I find it so much easier to connect with a character who knows how to flex and adapt as their situation changes. Plus, it was so exciting to see these characters build their relationship the “right way,” by working through the rules and customs of their world so they could perform the roles they’d been given to the best of their abilities.
To quote the first two lines of Taylor Swift's "Antihero," it's me, hi. Though I pressed pause on Snow White with the Red Hair's manga following Season 1's content, I decided to jump back into it as described in my first status update. I was also thinking about this franchise recently as I prep for grad school. The itch to see what happens next has been building in the back of my mind for the past few months, so on a library run a couple weeks ago at the time of this review, I grabbed this and the next two volumes.
The translation's still not perfect. The disconnect between the formality and slang is something I'm going to have to sit with until I either finish this arc or catch up with the manga's material (only one way to find out!). From a plot standpoint, I still like seeing Shirayuki and Zen navigate this stage of their relationship. The latter is quite lovesick, which Akiduki likes leaning into. The main unit's pretty comfortable with each other, and I think having what the mangaka dubbed the Roadside Inn arc at this stage in the manga vs. the anime shows how the "core three" (Mitsuhide and Kiki will get their time in the sun if future plot points I've heard are any indication) will continue to grow in their work at the palace. It's something I'm interested in seeing a peak of now that I'm back in Clarines.
Ending this volume with the start of an arc about Ryu (yay!!) and something mysterious involving Prince Izana, the majority of this volume focuses on Obi. I can’t help but remember when Sorata-sensei mentioned that Obi was quite high in a character popularity poll from fans in Japan. I see that she took that into account as Obi only gains more and more significance to the point that he’s essentially all but one of three main characters now, rising above Mitsuhide and Kiki (who are overdue for some more content of their own!). That being said, the way that Obi watches Shirayuki and the way in which he only ever reels himself back in with just her… I feel as though Sorata-sensei is ever so slowly turning him into Zen’s rival in love. Of course, there’s no real contest when the two are already where they are (soo cute, by the way!) but there is still room for exciting and stimulating circumstances nonetheless. Perhaps they’ll all feel sullen after becoming so close and realizing this closeness is what’s both helping and hurting Obi in the end. Who knows! But this manga is still adorable and entertaining with an ever growing wide cast of characters. So, I’m enthralled to see where we keep going from here!

This is one of those in between arc volumes where previous threads are tied up and new story elements are begun. They're necessary for stories, but they're not always the most exciting parts of the story. New settings need detail. New plots need building. It takes time, and often at a slow and steady pace. There is a lot of that in this volume as we enter a new phase of Shirayuki's life as an official court herbalist.
What captured my fantasy in this volume was the art. Akiduki-sensei has developed a masterful way of capturing emotion and quirky personality with minimal facial features that still make the characters feel real. There's a commanding skill in her figure gesturing that also shows that she studied from life. This was a satisfying volume.
