The Red Mother Vol. 1

After losing her eye and the man she loves in a brutal mugging, Daisy McDonough attempts to move on, but her new prosthetic eye reveals an ancient evil trying to cross over into our own world…the Red Mother.

Praise for The Red Mother

"Red is the color of blood and terror. Red is the light that seeps through a keyhole straight from Haun's macabre imagination." - Laird Barron (Black Mountain, Blood Standard)

"...brutal, human-driven horror at its finest. The first issue will get under your skin, and leave you wanting the next issue as soon as you can get it." - James Tynion IV (Batman, Something Is Killing The Children)

"The Red Mother waits patiently in your peripheral vision until you fall asleep. It’s the most effective horror comic I’ve seen in years, and a book I’m sure to dwell on each month while I anxiously await the next issue." - Alex Grecian (New York Times bestselling author of The Yard)

The last thing Daisy sees before she blacks out is her boyfriend being dragged away into the darkness. She wakes up in the hospital after the attack and learns that her eye was so badly damaged it had to be removed. When she gets a new prosthetic eye, Daisy starts to see terrifying flashes of red filled with things—and people—that aren’t there…

Now Daisy must solve the mystery behind these visions as they begin to take control and drag her closer to something that she doesn’t understand…and may not be of this world.

Writer Jeremy Haun (The Beauty, The Realm) and artist Danny Luckert (Regression) present the first volume of an all-new series examining the dangers that hide in plain sight—and the consequences of digging beneath the surface to find the truth underneath.

A gifted puzzle designer loses her boyfriend AND her eyeball in one fell swoop when something terrifying enters her life and changes the way she sees the world.

description

Suddenly, the world goes red and a creepy monster appears, then it all goes back to normal the next second.
Is she going insane or is it a side effect of losing her eye?
Neither! There's a spooky-ass demon behind you, girl!

I like this one. The art set the tone and the ending had me downloading the second volume immediately after I finished.

A slow burn horror comic about a woman who loses both her eye and her boyfriend in the park one night while walking through New York. She begins to see red along with an ancient evil(?) through her missing eye. This is a book where Boom's policy of collecting 4 issues into a trade worked against the story. The supernatural side of the plot moves slowly as Daisy deals with the trauma of the attack. It's just barely getting started when the volume ends.

Danny Luckert's art is very good.

Read this with my old fart in arms, Anne

Edited in warning from the future: Don't bother reading this series. There are no answers, it is empty.

It's a horror comic, and I wish Boom had just brought out volumes 1 and 2 in one volume, because I read this in less than 30 minutes.

The book wants there to be a slow build, and then the brevity of the book works against it. The monster thing looks sufficiently creepy (tiny thing: I don't like long claws, it instantly makes the thing look a bit silly, like an over the top manga drawing).

Kind of a hard book to review, a lot is teased, not a lot actually happens. Overall, it's very okay.

A strange horror tale that I was both into and yet couldn't even remember the main characters name?

The look and feel of this is pretty cool, dark, and scary. But the characters didn't really grab my attention. With a cool idea, a woman is assaulted by some demon thing and her boyfriend kidnapped and this title is mostly focused on PTSD. And for the most part it works though sometimes I think it went TOO fast through bigger moments but some hit well. I also think the overall design of the creatures/demons/red mother all look pretty great. I don't know how I feel about the main character or her side cast yet though.

Interesting enough to read more but not blown away. A 3 out of 5.

So I was reading this monthly and decided that this story felt like it would read better all at once versus once a month. So now that I have all the singles, instead of starting where I left off, I figured I’d just start back from the top. So far I feel like I was right. Even tho this is a slow burn, the pacing feels right. The woman is walking with her BF and they get attacked by who knows what. He disappears and she loses an eye. Later she gets a prosthetic eye and afterward starts seeing some weird stuff. Some good writing and some nice suspense building up. The art has been really good as well. Looking forward to the next set of issues.

The Red Mother is a classic urban horror story in the making that escalates to terrifying and compelling even before the real villains are revealed. Danny Luckert's art is beautiful. The characters are beautifully detailed and they come to life on the page. The backgrounds are great and the panels move the story along in a way that complements both the tone of the story, but the pace of its action. Though this is not the strongest debut it is a really well conceived concept with excellent art and a mystery that is truly haunting, plus some excellent slow-burn suspense. I'd like more of this, please.

It ends almost before it fully gets going but I’m intrigued enough to pick up volume two. An easy read with some creepy/unsettling sequences

I only just read this and am finally getting around to review it and I don't remember much. Either my memory is fading or this didn't leave a big impression on me.

After her boyfriend is dragged into what seems like nothing and Daisy lost her eye she must now deal with not only her grief but a seemingly phantom red that takes over her vision. I loved the art it was extremely gorgeous to look at. The storyline seems interesting, A seemingly ordinary girl is being chased after by some kind of entity. For what reason I am not entirely sure. I am curious to see where this comic goes but I will need reread the first one before the second.

Hard to know what to make of this. The writing is good quality, but I've seen this formula too many times by now: Strange and scary things happen; characters get developed; and nothing is explained. In this first volume it's just repeat-repeat-repeat of the same strangeness. It could well develop into something interesting in the second volume (other, similar books have, and as I said, the writing is good quality), but this is just a tease.

A slow burning horror story that IS entertaining, but ends before it can answer any significant questions about the monster and the heroine’s connection to it. The best part of the book is the exploration of the main character’s trauma from said monster. It’s great stuff and while the main threat isn’t very developed yet, I’m very attached to Daisy and want to give this series at least one more volume.

Not much happened in the first 4 issues. Each issue kinda repeated itself. It left me wanting more which is great but I went in not knowing anything and left this volume not knowing anything lol I will continue with the series. I feel like this will just get better and better. I do like the mystery of Mother. Very creepy

The Red Mother is a new horror graphic novel series, and guys – this series has me hooked. I've been reading it in single issue format, and holy cow. It's haunting and disturbing, and totally not afraid to show the gruesome side of horror.

Written by Jeremy Haun, and illustrated by Danny Luckert, The Red Mother Vol. 1 is about to begin a terrifying journey like no other. Enter Daisy McDonough. She was happy with the life she had, the free time, the friends, the boyfriend. All of it.

That is, right up until the moment when her life flipped upside down. In a single stroke, Daisy lost her boyfriend. And one of her eyes. A brutal attack nearly cost her anything, and she's still learning the consequences of it all.

The Red Mother Vol. 1 is the beginning to a truly dark series. Daisy is seemingly randomly targeted, and that event changed her life forever. While I have my doubts about the randomness about the attack, there's no denying the damage that was done.

I want to emphasize the dark and graphic part here, as this is not a series that shies away from gore. If you have any issues with eye injuries, don't read this series. Seriously. Many of the title pages reference this, and it is a strong theme throughout.

I love how twisted and dark this series is. I love that I can't quite seem to guess what is going to happen next, or why Daisy was targeted in the first place. It's been a fascinating read, right from the start. I honestly can't get enough of it.

There are tones that feel almost achingly familiar from this series, and yet that has actually helped to enhance the feeling of wrongness. It's quite cleverly done, intentional or not. It certainly worked to make it strike a chord with me.

The artwork is fantastic. Heavy uses of red when needed, naturally. I find myself more interesting in the alternate imagery, instead of the 'real world' that Daisy sees. Again, I imagine that was done with intent. I just have so many questions about what is happening here, and who can blame me?

I'm further ahead in The Red Mother, since I've been reading the issues. Yet I still strongly recommend this first volume, and all the mystery it brings with it. It's captivating and horrifying, in a way that is impossible to look away from.

This is an interesting concept and at least the writers have managed to ensure this isn't rushed into a 5 mini series. The story doesn't answer anything and only asks more questions. I knew this series prior to purchasing issue 1 and volume 1, so my general expectations of volume 1 answering anything was low. Boom Studios are on one hell of a ride with their books at the moment and it's refreshing to see. This book is only letdown by it's character design but that may correct itself in the next few volumes. I had only picked up the first volume and I now regret not getting them all.

I hadn't heard anything about this graphic novel and I picked it based on its cover. We're doing a staff reading challenge at work and one of the categories is: Read a book based entirely on its cover. Boom! Enter The Red Mother graphic novel :) Creepy in parts and definitely intriguing. Getting read to read volume 2.

Beautifully drawn, volume 1 is all about the slow-build. Vol 2 is all about the slow-build. Then sadly, volume 3 is ALSO about the slow-build, until suddenly everything is happening, leading to ... an abrupt ending. Wat.

Verdict: Underwhelming.

A horror comic where they've yet to actually get to the horror. This is mostly a sad and familiar tale of someone who has a loved one killed by something supernatural. The police don't believe them. Nobody is trying hard enough. But the spirit of their dead beloved comes and warns them about something coming, and what's coming? Well, it's hinted at but the book ends before anything truly interesting happens.

I wish there were more to this first volume, as the dialogue was well-crafted, the characters were more fleshed out than your average horror comic, and the art was intriguing. Unfortunately, the concept, as a whole just wasn't interesting, and not enough plot progression happened to have me excited for the next volume.

This might be of interest to people who like Slow Burn horror with developed characters, but it isn't enough to entice me to pick up volume two.

After a strange attack that leaves her boyfriend missing and her without an eye, Daisy is forced to recuperate from the trauma. However, the recovery and new eye has her unknowingly tied to enigmatic entity known as the Red Mother. I found the premise intriguing and was drawn by the artwork and of course, the usage of red. I especially love the glimpses of the Red Mother in the earlier parts of each chapter, as if she is coming more together as the story progresses. It's very ominous. Personally though, I didn't feel to attached to the characters yet I am curious to see what happens to them. It's a slow burn, I just hope my questions are answered.

After reading only volume one 4/5 stars, but after reading volume two 2.5/5 stars. I love suspense and stories that drag on a bit and don’t give too clear of answers leaving the reader to imagine possibilities, but this one was simply too much of those things that I enjoy, so much so that it feels quite empty.
