You have to read this dark and powerful fantasy novel to find out!
Another important and intriguing addition to the Storm Below series, were introduced to more characters and understand more about the powers everyone gets when they come of age. There are some shocking twists and turns and Ary goes through some truly awful experiences which shape and define him as a character. And once you find out that plot twist at the end, you’ll be clamoring for book 4!
This is a compelling continuation to The Storm Below series. I really enjoyed the complexity of the story and the massive reveal at the end had me gobsmacked even though there had been hints for the twist. I think it takes quite some skill to provide the foreshadowing but make everything else that's going on so all-consuming that I don't notice and get surprised. Kudos to the author for getting that so amazingly right.
Chaylene's part of the story, especially in Parts 1 and 2 really hit home hard. I appreciate this author's exploration of the psychology of addiction and how all-consuming it can become, and the nod to those who overcome their addictions also resonated very strongly for me. However, my subconscious rejected the decision to have Chaylene's addiction mirror her mother's. As someone who has a fraught relationship with my mother, nothing like the character's difficult relationship mind you, but still complex and very much conflicted, that part just felt wrong to me, but I'm glad I kept reading even when I considered DNFing because the other characters and the overarching story are awesome.
Zori and Guts were so much fun in this volume and really came out as an interesting relationship foil alongside Estaan and Estie. These characters helped to highlight how strong Chaylene and Ary are even when they are not together, and also brought to bear in beautiful ways the complexities of relationships, that we aren't all the same and that each relationship has its own troubles and also great moments, so we can never generalize and what works for one couple might not work for another. I also really resonated with Zori and Guts' decision to make the most of what they had because of how uncertain the future is. It's a nice reminder to live in the NOW and focus on having no regrets. Absolutely LOVED that.
Note this book ends on a cliffhanger, but for a change it was exceptionally well done and instead of turning me off continuing the series it's managed to get me all excited for what happens next. Can't wait! Thankfully I have the next volume and won't have to wait.
I've really become attached to Ary at this point. My heart really went out to him with some of the things that occured in this book. I'm really fascinated with how much depth the world has, and I have to applaud Reid for continuing to grow it in each subsequent volume. There were plenty of twists to keep you guessing throughout, and it's a great addition to the series.
Omg this one was hardddddd. There were a few bits I had to skim because I’m not a fan of torture to my favourite characters! but it really set the stage. There were people in here I took immense pleasure when they stopped breathing! Our poor Awry! I cannot wait to start book 4
