ANYONE IS A TARGET…
FOR THE RIGHT PRICE.

For Barrett Mason, going to ground in Belgium was almost heaven. But money is tight for an out-of-work spy. So, when a Senator’s daughter vanishes on a trip to Mexico, Barrett leaps at the chance to find her. Bringing her home means a small fortune from a filthy-rich donor in the DC Beltway.

Barrett’s new business partner—his wife, Libby—demands to come along. And when they arrive in the tropical paradise of Cancun, they must uncover the meaning behind a disturbing crime scene.

But the truth isn’t easily dug up. To find it, Barrett and Libby must delve into the grimiest parts of Mexico City’s underbelly. Even if it means being outnumbered by a vicious gang of cartel gunmen who will kill anyone to keep a dark conspiracy.

Fans of Clancy's Jack Ryan, Child's Jack Reacher, Ludlum's Jason Bourne, and LT Ryan's Jack Noble will be hooked by the heart-pounding, life-or-death adventures of Barrett Mason.

This is book five in the Barrett Mason series. Mason is no longer welcome in the US and if he returned, people would hunt him down and kill him. He and his wife Libby have settled in Belgium with their daughter, having gone to ground there and are quite enjoying the peaceful life. But, even as an out of work former spy, they need work or money to survive. He gets offered a job through an old boss of his, to go and find a Senator’s daughter, who has gone missing from a party week in Cancun. She had five friends with her and also a bodyguard, but nothing has been heard from her for days.

One of the Senator’s backers and long term friend has fronted the funds to have Mason trace the Senator’s daughter and bring her safely back home to her parents. Mason jumps at the fully funded job, but his wife Libby insists on accompanying him. She has more people skills than he does and is better at doing research than him. He is more the action man in the pairing. They travel on false papers to DC to meet the Senator and his wife and then onto Mexico. The easiest place to find is the rented house where all the action seems to have happened. The Mexican police have already investigated the site and taped it off. The only surprise is that the bodies haven’t been removed, even though it seems to have happened days ago.

The rental house is actually owned by others who are not exactly in the legal end of business and what happens to Mason as he checks out the interior, gets quite hairy. It gives the couple some clues as to what may have happened, but also leads to their arrest. They are thrown into separate jails, but Mason may have been arrested by the last straight policeman in Mexico! Mason has to get himself and his wife out of jail and then ends up in even more trouble as they have to enter the criminal underbelly of Mexico City to track down their leads. They have an unusual helper, giving them a local’s knowledge and family connections. What it leads them to are links to the local Cartel and a human trafficking business. They are outnumbered and fighting corrupt cops, cartel criminals and local gangs. What they don’t know is, who was responsible for the actual kidnapping of the Senator’s daughter and was it politically influenced?

Lots of action throughout and especially at the end, which kept my attention the whole way through. I have not read much of the series and didn’t feel that I needed to have read any other books first, to understand what happened in this book. I however, want to catch up on the building up of Barrett Mason and his family’s current life. How they got together and what pushed them to be where they are. I guessed part of the deal with who was behind matter, but not until close to the end. My main enjoyment was from all the action and pace of the read. I received an ARC copy of this book from the author and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Wow!!! Not what I expected, but worth every second of this read!!!

Libby is the Voice of reason, while Barrett is proverbial wild card!!! When Vince enters the picture, the .murkiness begins to resolve???

Good read

I always drop my ratings of books that are poorly edited like this one was. Full of typos and grammatical errors. One of my hobbies is proofing for several writers, and errors grab my eyes.
