Goldie, Diane, and Cheryl find themselves jetsetting to sunny Los Angeles for a break but are drawn into a deeply personal investigation in this all new original graphic novel.
CALIFORNIA HERE WE COME!
Thanks to a serendipitous conflagration of events, Goldie, Diane, and Cheryl find themselves jetsetting to sunny Los Angeles! While Cheryl pursues space dreams at JPL and Diane continues her work as a remote scout for a music label, Goldie finds her days lost in the haze of old Hollywood, becoming friendly with a silent film start long past her prime. But when she’s framed for stealing, Goldie must dive back into her secret history in Tinsel Town to get to the bottom of it!
Acclaimed writer Jackie Ball (Welcome to Wanderland) and artist Mollie Rose (Steven Universe) present the return of everyone’s favorite young detective in an all new mystery with all the glitz, glamor and giant secrets you’d expect from Goldie!
even though it's written and illustrated by new artists, this is a wonderful addition to the world of goldie vance! the fresh LA setting is a lot of fun, and the robust cast of characters keeps growing more and more well-rounded.
in this volume goldie finds a LA lady detective who gives her a new professional perspective. meanwhile, goldie's girlfriend diane has a music industry opportunity, and bff cheryl is working with NASA for the summer. it feels like the gang is really starting to grow up!
it's also fun to see more of sugar, and for her to acknowledge her position as a "recovering antagonist." this series is always good warm fun 🥰
Summer has arrived. Teenager Goldie Vance is bored in South Florida. No crimes to solve for this budding detective. When her best friend gets an internship with NASA, her girlfriend a summer job, and her mother a movie consultation, all in Los Angeles, off to Hollywood they go. In L.A. Goldie spots a lady detective and is hot on her trail. She inveigles Adella “Del” Avery to take her on as her apprentice despite her no teen detective policy. Goldie is elated when Avery grudgingly agrees for her to work the case of the missing shoes of a former tap dancer. Avery is trying to solve missing items taken in several burglaries of high profile movie industry folks.
The original writer and illustrator are no longer working on this comic series. While I found that the plot was better scripted, the character appearances have changed. Sugar Maple was drawn so differently that I did not even recognize her. I found it jarring. At least Goldie, Diane, and Cheryl looked more similar to their former images. Also, why are Goldie and Del wearing the same clothes all the time except for a gala event?
Another super fun addition to this series. Although I didn't love the art style and writing quite as much as the issues by the previous creators, this was still a delight to read and it was so nice to be reunited with Goldie and be thrown into another of her mysteries.
I fell in love with Goldie Vance a while back. She's smart and sassy, she has great side characters, and the retro artwork is cheery and fun. Hope Larson, the series creator, didn't work on this volume and it lost some of the magic for me.
Goldie's friends and family are in Hollywood for various reasons that serendipitously coincide. Goldie tags along but she's at loose ends until she happens to witness a private investigator trying to apprehend a criminal. In typical Goldie form, she inserts herself into the case.
The artwork isn't quite as charming as it has been in earlier series entries. If I had grabbed this book first, I would probably love it, but it just feels like a little bit of a letdown now. Goldie's friends put in very minor appearances for a panel here and there but they're largely absent. Instead, this focuses on Goldie's relationship with the PI, Del Avery, a former teen detective herself. Del's a little older, and a little too bitter to fit in with the rest of the crowd. And the motive for the thefts of old movie memorabilia feels forced.
I'll continue with the series and hope that the magic hasn't completely departed with the original creator.
I binged all 5 volumes of Goldie Vance tonight and I wasn’t totally sold at first, but they just got better as they went along! I guess it just took a bit for me to get attached to the characters. Recommend if you want a fun, light hearted read!
This series keeps my heart warm!! Freaking love the art, character development and her partnering up with a lady P.I. in this one?? AMAZING!!!

Another really cute and fun addition to this series. The change of scenery was nice and so was getting to see Goldie interact with an older female detective. Just a really nice series if you need something cute and fluffy.
Damn, it's a shame to have reached the end of this series! There's definitely the open-ended potential for more content, but it's been four years since this volume! Maybe I'll check out the two associated middle-grade books, who's to say.
In my early reviews, I wasn't super into these books or in love with Goldie Vance's world yet. But the plots became more grounded (quite literally!) as the volumes progressed, and by this time I finally found myself enjoying this group of characters.
In here, Goldie and the gang take a trip to LA where Goldie goes in search of a detective to intern. She finds Detective Avery - who isn't fond of hiring teen sleuths - but reluctantly lets Goldie play her part. As their mystery begin to intertwine, both detectives realize what they can learn from the other to find a way to save the day.
My favorite part of this book was Sugar. I am such a sucker for a good old-fashioned "enemies to friends" arc, and the focus on her and Goldie's current friendship was just adorable. And with Avery's past, there's the nice parallel of "I don't have a friend turned enemy, but I have an enemy turned friend, so maybe one day you can have that too."
Also, I just had more fun with the mystery this time around.
I’m enamored with this light comic reminiscent of Nancy Drew. I love the diversity, the characters’ personalities, and the just-complicated-enough-to-resolve-in-one-volume cases. Having the crew travel to LA in the first volume without Hope Larson at the helm was genius. A different setting removed fans from the familiar Florida resort, allowing focus on the characters that flowed seamlessly into guidance from new management.
I was a little nervous about this volume not being written by Hope Larson, but it definitely follows well In her footsteps! Another adorable, retro, queer adventure featuring a favorite teen detective!
This was cute! I liked it a lot better than 4. I hope the novels cover new ground/tie up loose ends left over the course of the graphic novels since this seems like the last one of those.
Another cute and fun adventure mystery for Goldie Vance. Unfortunately, I could barely recognize most of the cast due to the character design changing with the artist. But it was energetic and fun and I liked the fact that new readers should be able to hop right in without much confusion.
Not as good the previous Goldie Vance volumes. And it bothered me that Sugar looks very different in the book than she does on the cover or in previous issues.
Goldie Vance is back and taking Los Angeles by storm! While her best friends have glamorous lives as movie stars or are off working at fancy internships, Goldie has to figure out her own summer plans. When she stumbles across a grown-up female detective, Goldie knows she is meant to spend the summer solving real mysteries! After a bit of convincing, Goldie manages to land her dream assistant job where she is quickly caught up in a pair of intertwining mysteries involving both sentimental and very lucrative thefts.
Goldie is back! Move aside Nancy Drew--Goldie Vance is the queen of teen detectives. I love the sweet alternate reality that Goldie lives in (that essentially looks a bit like a Hollywood version of the 1960s without racism, the Vietnam War, and all of those real-world issues). Goldie and her friends exude the diversity that is much needed in modern comics but probably wouldn't have worked out well in real life at the time--Goldie is biracial, gay, curvy, and amazing (she also drag races, though that isn't featured in this book). Her friends are equally unique and awesome. Plus these comics are just fun--a combination of Sherlock Holmes meets Nancy Drew mystery, a few high stakes action scenes, fun side characters to flesh out a plot, and a great color palate that brings the setting to life. More please!
